Help boere in droogte

METRO CHAIR : GRANT TWIGG ELECTED, PROMISES 2019 WILL BE A YEAR OF CHANGE

Third time’s a charm SALETTE CLOETE

T

hird time’s a charm. Grant Twigg, chairperson of subcouncil 2, which includes Brackenfell, campaigned for DA metro chairperson for the third time and on Saturday won by majority vote. He explains that this time round he wants change. “Not necessarily from the party, but how we do things, because we can do things much better.” Twigg says one of the things they as a par-

ty could do better is to give recognition to their community activists. “If we want future leaders, then we have to give recognition to the people on the ground. We cannot just choose people to work for us – we also have to help build them up.” He says it is actually sad to think that if one of the people who put the councillor in his position dies, no-one would pay much attention unless it is the councillor themselves. Twigg says 2019 will be a year of change, during which they will pay attention to their community structures. “We will

help grow them and give them purpose and training so they can influence what we do.” He says that during his term these structures will be enabled to realise what their priorities are in order to bring them to the fore. “We cannot decide for them what they need and what is priority in their areas.” Twigg says his first priority will be to get all the leaders together so they can have an opportunity to share their priorities with him. “I know the issues in the City, but I want

each branch to come to me and tell me what their individual issues and problems are.” For Twigg, gangsterism needs priority. “We have done the same thing over and over again and said the same things and know by now it is not working. From a political standpoint, we as leaders will have to sit and work out a new strategy.” He says it will not be his goal to target people, but to make sure the right people are appointed in the right positions. Twigg takes over this position with his deputy chairs, JP Smith, Phindile Maxiti and Anda Ntsodo.
