CAPE PARTY: CARIN BRYNARD ENTERS RACE AGAINST DA

t’s official. DA ward 102 councillor Carin Brynard has entered the race for the seat she recently vacated. The upcoming by-election for this ward – which includes Vredekloof, large parts of Brackenfell and Kraaifontein – on 29 November promises to be a hotly contested affair, with Brynard lining up under the Cape Party banner. Brynard, who has served as councillor for 11 years, attributed her resignation to the high degree of centralisation within decision-making structures in the DA-led Cape Town Unicity. “Mayor Patricia de Lille has systematically withdrawn delegations from portfolio committees and subcouncils. Subcouncils and portfolio committees now have no teeth and the mayor virtually manages the City as she pleases,” says Brynard. Brynard clashed with Cape Town mayor Patricia De Lille, whose leadership style she says is dictatorial and nasty, with no professionalism and decorum left in the caucus of the Cape Town DA. “Councillors are being intimidated with language such as ‘go home if you cannot read; you should be ashamed of yourselves, so go home and go hide under your beds; you’re not worthy of your salaries, etc.’, when clarity is sought on things,” she says. “Patricia has gutted the power of the DA caucus under the guise of redress, reconciliation and correcting apartheid legacy, and she drives, for instance, development densification without giving any regard to infrastructure unable to keep up with such densi-

fication.” Brynard accuses De Lille of reducing the City’s public participation process to a merely cosmetic exercise. “Objections not in line with the mayor’s vision are simply wiped off the table,” says Brynard Brynard lamented not being able to suitably service the needs of her constituents and contends that voters in wards like hers are taken for granted by the DA-led City council. “Funding restrictions for services are hurting ratepayers in ward 102. Rates and taxes are not ploughed back proportionately to ratepayers in the ward. In many instances I have no answers for my constituents and the tug of war between what is best for my people and what is best for my party is something I have wrestled with for perhaps too long,” says Brynard. “It was not my intention to stand for the position again, after I left the DA,” says Brynard. “But the fact of the matter is that I was inundated with requests from voters to avail myself again.” “I was approached by a number of political parties, but after much prayer, introspection and studying of party policy, have I decided to go with the Cape Party. The Cape Party’s ‘voter-centred’ vision is what attracted me. “Politics needs be neither dirty nor selfcentred. As public representatives, we get our mandate from our voters and they should not just be used as voting fodder. “I believe that there are no proper alternatives to the Democratic Alliance currently and that voters have not been given any other proper alternative. Now they have one.” V To page 2.
