A

uthorities fear the eruption of a taxi war in Brackenfell following the application for a new taxi route into this suburb. An attack allegedly linked to this higly controversial route occured last Wednesday when a women attempting to board a taxi in Cecil Morgan Street was pulled out of the taxi and allegedly assaulted by rival taxi owners. The proposed new route will connect the eastern areas of Khay-

elitsha and Nyanga with the CapeGate region, sidestepping the Bellville connection – a move that will lead to chaos, according to role players.

The Transport and Urban Development Authority (TDA) received this application earlier this month and already it has resulted in taxis illegally ranking on the Protea Heights side of the Brackenfell train station, while the application is pending.

According to local councillors, the proposed route, coming from Khayelitsha, via

Mfuleni, Blue Downs and Kuils River, down Bottelary Road into Cecil Morgan Street and down to the Brackenfell train station, is one that will cause severe friction between the Cape Amalgamated Taxi Association (Cata) and the Congress of Democratic Taxi Associations (Codeta), two taxi factions in the City.

At a meeting on Wednesday, Siseko Mbandezi, a DA councillor in subcouncil 2, vehemently opposed this route, saying it is a “disaster waiting to happen”. According to him, Cata has been ranking on the other side of

the station in Brackenfell for several years serving local routes. Giving another faction legal ranking rights just on the other side of the railway bridge will lead to unprecedented taxi violence, he said.

“It will endanger the lives of the taxi drivers, passengers, train commuters, schoolchildren crossing the railway bridge in the mornings and afternoons, as well as the residents in the adjacent residential Protea Heights area,” he said.

Man (49) van Morgensterhoogte is Saterdag in die vroeë oggendure deur ’n huisrower met ’n mes in sy bed aangeval.

Volgens die Brackenfell-polisie het die rower omstreeks 04:25 eers by ’n motorvoertuig in die erf ingebreek en daarna deur ’n badkamervenster geklim om by die huis in te kom.

“Die huiseienaar het wakker geword toe die man verby sy bed gestap het en het begin

skreeu. ’n Skermutseling het gevolg waartydens die huiseienaar met ’n mes gesteek is.

“Die geraas het die huiseienaar se seun en sy vriend, wat ook daar woon, wakker gemaak,” vertel Crous.

Volgens die seun het hy wakker geword toe sy pa hom begin roep het.

“Ek het in die kamer ingehardloop en die man op my pa gesien. My pa het baie gebloei en hy het sy wond probeer toehou met sy ander hand. Ek het die man weggeruk terwyl my pa weggekom het en my ma ’n handdoek gaan haal het om die bloed te stop,” vertel hy.

“My vriend het my kom help en ons kon die rower platdruk tot die polisie ’n paar minute later daar opgedaag het,” sê hy.

Volgens hom het sy pa twee steekwonde opgedoen – ’n ligte vleiswond in die arm en ’n diep steekwond onder die skouer. ’n Ambulans het kort ná die polisie opgedaag om die beseerde na ’n plaaslike hospitaal toe te vervoer. Die 28-jarige rower van Kraaifontein is in hegtenis geneem.

Hy het Maandagoggend in die Bluedownslanddroshof verskyn op klagte van huisroof en poging tot moord. Die polisie sal borg teenstaan.

Nuwe ‘epiese reis’ begin vir Attie CARINA ROUX

s kranige fietsryer het Attie Conradie (51) van Panorama vele uitdagende ritte aangepak en onder meer drie Cape-Epic-bergfietstoere voltooi.

Verlede week het Conradie met ’n nuwe “epiese reis” begin – dié van rehabilitasie.

Conradie is gedeeltelik verlam nadat hy op Maandag 6 November met sy fiets agter in ’n stilstaande vragmotor, wat in die fietsbaan van Giel Basson-rylaan naby N1 Stad geparkeer was, vasgery het. (“Kranige fietsryer breek sy nek,” 15/11).

Ná twee weke in die hoësorgeenheid van die Netcare N1 Stad-hospitaal is hy verlede Maandag 20 November oorgeplaas na die spesialisrehabilitasie-eenheid van die Vincent Pallotti-hospitaal.

Conradie se jarelange fietsrymaat, Cor Winckler, hou sedert die ongeluk ’n webjoernaal oor sy vriend se vordering en het aanlyn ’n Back a Buddy-fondsinsameling vir hom begin.

Verlede Dinsdag 22 November plaas hy “Attie se eie woorde” oor dag een van rehabilitasie: “Teen skemeroggend het ek ’n lys gemaak van takies wat ek gedink het van my verwag sal word in die eerste dag in stygende volgorde van moeilikheidsgraad: asemhalingsoefeninge, voer jouself, borsel jou eie tande, strekoefeninge, weerstandsoefeninge met die arms, skep ’n nuwe sterrestelsel met ten minste twee menslik bewoonbare planete en sit regop op die bed met behulp van ’n OT (arbeidsterapeut).

Op kort termyn behels dit bykomende tyd wat Conradie in die rehabilitasie-eenheid sal moet deurbring en noodsaaklike aanpassings aan die gesin se huis om dit bewoonbaar te maak vir ’n kwadrupleeg.

Op lang termyn kyk hulle na toerusting soos ’n aangepaste rolstoel, ’n spesiale bed, hystoestelle en ander toerusting om die huis meer toeganklik te maak en ’n aangepaste voertuig. Winckler het die aanvanklike mikpunt gestel op R250 000 en die reaksie is tot dusver positief. Die afgelope Maandag is bydraes van meer as R200 000 reeds ontvang.

Reeds verlede Woensdag 22 November kon Winckler op die webjoernaal berig dat hul danksy die vrygewige donasies kon begin met die eerste aanpassings aan die huis wat sal verseker dat Conradie maklike toegang tot wasgeriewe sal kan hê.

Op Donderdag 23 November berig Winckler oor ‘‘Attie se idee”.

Hy noem dat hy ’n kort telefoongesprek met hom gehad het – iets wat “so normaal klink, maar ’n wonderlike ervaring was”.

Tussen hulle het hulle vorendag gekom met ’n plan wat Conradie in staat sal stel om self ’n slukkie water uit sy waterbottel te kan neem, sonder dat dit nodig sal wees om iemand om hulp te vra.

Winckler beskryf die 3D-ontwerp as ’n kombinasie van ’n gewone fietsrybottelhouer en ’n pennetjie wat hy reeds vroeër vir Conradie gemaak het vir sy foon. Die pennetjie glip in ’n spesiale omhulsel wat Conradie aan sy hand dra en ook gebruik om ’n tandeborsel of lepel mee te hanteer.

Teen Vrydag 24 November vertel Winckler dat Conradie in sy sessie saam met die terapeut ‘‘vier sponsies en vyf blokkies tussen sy vinger en duim opgetel het en dit aan die ander kant van ’n tafel neergesit het”.

Hy vertel egter ook dat Conradie bietjie fomo (fear of missing out) ervaar omdat hy saam met die Investec Impi-span aan die Double Century-fietsren, wat die afgelope Saterdag plaasgevind het, sou deelneem.

Saterdag het egter wel ’n aangename verrassing vir Conradie ingehou toe hy besoek ontvang het van Joey Evans, wat self die reis afgelê het toe hy tydelik ’n parapleeg was ná ’n motorfietsongeluk 10 jaar gelede, tot hy vroeër vanjaar die enigste Suid-Afrikaanse motorfietsryer was wat die Dakartydren kon voltooi.

Evans het 90 minute lank gekuier en vir Conradie ’n getekende kopie van sy boek From Para to Dakar gegee.

“It cannot work. We understand that a route from Khayelitsha directly to the CapeGate region might be necessary, but not at the cost of innocent lives,” Mbele said.

At the same meeting, ward councillor for Protea Heights, Marian Nieuwoudt, submitted an urgent motion that this route not be established before proper consultation has taken place, and that law enforcement action at the station be included in monthly reports.

Nieuwoudt requested Law Enforcement to render an ongoing service at the Brackenfell station. According to reports, 52 taxis have been impounded at the station by Law Enforcement since October.

“The disregard for subcouncil 2 and the Brackenfell community is unacceptable. Insufficient law enforcement cannot be addressed by legalising illegal conduct,” she concludes.

ead cats, dirty mattresses, building rubble and old food are just some of the items dumped and left to rot on a vacant plot in Protea Village.

The unsightly, stinking plot is situated in Suikerbos Street, between Mooi Nooi flats and Protea Millennium Park housing complex.

After being ignored by authorities for over half a decade, resident Kalinka Barnardt is now at her wits’ end.

“What else can I do to have this plot properly cleaned and levelled?

“People have dumped all sorts of ghastly items here, not to mention the increase in the rodent population.

“Only a bulldozer can now clean and tidy up this plot,” she says.

Barnardt says she has reported the problem to several City departments in writing, but all to no avail.

“No-one will take responsibility – not the owner or the City.”

According to the City, this plot is privately owned and should be reported to the City’s Problem Building Unit (PBU).

JP Smith, Mayoral Committee member for safety and security and social services, says the PBU has not received any complaints related to this property.

“The PBU is strictly a reactive unit dealing only with complaints received,” he says.

He adds that the unit will visit the site to investigate and follow up with the City’s health department over the rodent infestation.

“Complaints can be lodged with the control room where complainants will receive a reference number, which they can use to track the progress of the case.

“The number to call is 107 from a landline, 112 from a cellphone or 021 480 7700.”

Conflict over City land DESIRÉE RORKE @dezzierorke

The vacant City-owned land in Jacaranda Street in Protea Heights should be secured for use as sports grounds for the local high school, Protea Heights Academy, and therefore be fast-tracked for sale.

Brackenfell ward councillor, Marian Nieuwoudt, last week reiterated this motion that was made and accepted by subcouncil 2 in January this year.

This comes as it became apparent by mid-year that the City’s Transport and Urban Development Authority (TDA) had ignored this subcouncil decision and decided instead that the land be reserved for low-cost housing.

It will remain on hold for at least a year for the TDA to investigate such possibilities.

Niewoudt said that this issue poses many difficulties, dealt with on a local level, which cannot simply be ignored by the TDA. She was adamant that the City implement the first motion as it was resolved by the subcouncil.

According to Nieuwoudt this is a matter of urgency, as the land is being used by scores of vagrants who often make open fires that pose a fire hazard to the neighbouring houses.

In one such fire a few months ago, a historic building on the land burnt down.

Nieuwoudt said the TDA cannot ignore the wishes of the subcouncil or the community for sports grounds, as sport and recreational facilities are also a mandate of the City.

A Russian Xmas at Hugo Lambrechts T

he annual Christmas concert at the Hugo Lambrechts Music Centre is taking place on Thursday 30 November (tomorrow) at 18:00 at the centre’s auditorium.

The proceeds of the concert will be donated to the TygerBear Foundation for traumatised children and families.

The consulate general of the Russian Federation in Cape Town will host two very accomplished guest artists to perform at the concert – the conductor Pavel Petrenko and the soprano Anna Markarova.

This is part of a cultural cooperation between St Petersburg and Cape Town.

These two will join the Hugo Lambrechts Symphony Orchestra in performing an exciting and festive programme of orchestral works and arias.

Ethan Lawson, a Hugo Lambrechts pupil, will feature as a soloist in JC Bach’s Cello Concerto in C Minor.

The remaining participants include several orchestras and ensembles from Hugo Lambrechts – string orchestras, a wind band, a harp choir and a unique ensemble consisting of 15 guitars and eight singers.

There will also be a mass item, which will bring together nearly 200 performers on stage.

The varied programme will include arrangements of popular and lesser known Christmas carols, including a brand new composition for a string orchestra, “Mzanzi Christmas”, by the local composer Anthony Costandius.

A donations box for goods and gifts for the children of the TygerBear project will be available at the centre a week prior to the concert.

Help aquarium to clean up our coastline The V&A Waterfront’s first Ocean Life Festival is taking place until Friday 8 December.

Considering that 80% of pollution in the ocean originates on land, cleaning up the coastline is a high priority for the organisers. All are welcome to join them on 2 December for a beach walk to collect litter to prevent it from entering the ocean.

Bags will be provided by the Two Oceans Aquarium (spearheading the clean-up), but

participants must bring their own gloves, hat, sunscreen and drinking water in a reusable bottle. The group will meet up at Sea Point beach (at the parking lot closest to the swimming pool) at 10:00 and the event should be over by 12:00. Participation is free.

Meld geweld teen vroue, kinders aan DESIRÉE RORKE @dezzierorke

G

eweld teen vroue en kinders moet ten alle tye aangemeld word.

Dít was die boodskap van die Brackenfell-polisie toe die 16 dae van aktivisme teen geweld teen vroue en kinders Saterdag langs die Bottelarypad van stapel gestuur is.

Hierdie jaarlikse internasionale veldtog ontlok groot emosie op plaaslike bodem, waar geweld teen vroue en kinders aan die orde van die dag is.

Suid-Afrika het die veldtog in 1998 aangeneem as een van sy tussenkoms-strategieë.

Tussen 09:00 en 11:00 het lede van die Brackenfell-polisie saam met ander rolspelers, asook kinders in die gemeenskap aan ’n plakkaatdemonstrasie langs die pad deelgeneem.

“Child abuse, see it, hear it, report it ...” het talle plakkate gelees.

Buurtwaglede, lede van die slagofferbystandeenheid en lede van ’n plaaslike sekerheidsfirma het pamflette uitgedeel om die gemeenskap bewus te maak van seksuele misdrywe en ander dade teen vroue en kinders.

“Geweld teen vroue en kinders kan en sal nooit geregverdig word nie en ons is toege-

wyd daaraan om die kwessie op te los,” sê kapt. Erica Crous, ’n polisiewoordvoerder.

“Ons hoofdoel is om sulke oortreders voor die hof te bring en die slagoffer van so ’n misdaad by te staan.”

In samewerking met die Stad se wetstoepassers is daar ook ’n padblokkade op die Bottelarypad gehou.

Volgens Crous is 87 voertuie afgetrek en deursoek.

“Boetes van R13 800 is uitgereik en een persoon is in hegtenis geneem vir die besit van dagga en ’n gevaarlike wapen,” sê sy.

Crous sê die polisie het reeds begin om verskeie maatreëls in te stel om misdaad tydens die feesseisoen te bekamp.

“Deurlopende beplande operasies en aktiwiteite sal reg deur die feestyd uitgevoer word by geïdentifiseerde misdaadvrotkolle.

“Ons sal ook staatmaak op ons gemeenskapspolisiëringsvennote soos die buurtwagte en sekerheidsmaatskappye om ons gedurende hierdie tyd te help.

“Ons versoek ook die gemeenskap om in hierdie tyd ekstra waaksaam te wees en ekstra veiligheidsmaatreëls in werking te stel om hul veiligheid te verseker,” het Crous gesê.

Ons sal vir die vale moet asem ophou

Om in hierdie dae – kort voor die feestyd – asem op te hou, is nie goed vir jou konstitusie nie (soos my oorle oupa altoos gesê het).

Dit is mos ’n tyd van onder meer rus, braaivleis en bier, hernuwing van familiebande en sorgelose seevakansies.

Wen die Zuma-groep, is ons gedoem tot algehele sonsverduistering en is ons voorland rommelstatus op elke moontlike terrein.

Maar slaan Cyril die kitaar, kan ons weer gulsig teug aan vars lug.

Dit sal minstens vir buitelandse beleggers en graderingsagentskappe ’n teken wees dat ons ’n nuwe rigting ingeslaan het – soos ons buurstaat met oom Bob se afdanking maar te goed gedemonstreer het.

Hoewel die meeste Wes-Kapenaars saam oor Cyril sal juig, gaan hierdie spontane suurstofinname van korte duur vir hulle wees.

Hy sou kwansuis die mense by wie hy die toestelletjie gekoop het, vra om na die toilet te kom kyk.

Dis nou al amper vier maande later en niemand het kom kyk nie, en ek sit nog steeds met ’n lekkende toilet.

Ek wil net alle bejaarde weduwees waarsku om eerder ’n loodgieter te kry wat deur ander mense aanbeveel is. Hoe kan ’n mens in die son by die see ontspan as jy so skaamteloos ingeloop is? My gesteelde moersleutel sal ek seker nooit kry nie.

Don’t demonise the provincial DA Every Wednesday I read about what people think about the DA. If I can write about all the things the ANC fails to do in the Western Cape as national government, there will not be any space left.

We all know that the ANC

is the national government, right? We all know the national government spends most of the country’s money on provinces governed by the ANC, while the Western Cape receives only a small portion of that money. The DA government in the Western Cape are doing their best to satisfy every single person, but as we all know, it’s impossible.

The DA Western Cape government paid out of their own pockets for damaged water infrastructure, which is the responsibility of national government. By doing this they put their “Green Audit” at risk. Look at the audit reports of the ANC provinces.

While I thank each and every one for their opinions, I also want to ask them to familiarise themselves with how government works. I do not agree with some steps of the local government (City of Cape Town), but I fully support the provincial government.

If you have a problem with local government, do not involve provincial government and vice versa. We all know that the DA is not the only political party that sits in the City Council. We all know that the local government (City of Cape Town) consists of many other political parties.

Rich areas exempt from RDP houses I don’t know what direction our country is moving in! I grew up in a township during my childhood; I worked hard to finish school, study and find a decent job so that I don’t have to stay in a township (better myself). To

be fair, I have to add that the township wasn’t always bad.

There are positives and negatives in townships. This is my experience and my opinion.

But what is the use of moving into a better area/suburb if at any time your area can be devalued by RDP houses? Why are there no RDP houses in Bishopscourt, Pinelands, Durbanville or Plattekloof? So what now?

Must we move before the developments come, uprooting our families and leaving our friends? This is unacceptable!

Bitter ontsteld oor heffings op pakkies Ek is self bitter ontsteld oor die kostes wat nou ewe skielik op pakkies gehef word (“Sakeman kla oor poskantoor se ‘geldgierigheid’,” 22/11).

Al vir jare gebruik ek die poskantoor, maar nog nooit voorheen het hulle ’n hanteringsfooi op pakkies gehef nie. Dit is nonsens.

Daar het wel nou en dan ’n brief van customs gekom aangaande ’n pakkie, waarop ek belasting moes betaal het, maar dit was dit.

My pakkies wat klein was, is net so in my posbus by die poskantoor gegooi. Die aflewering is presies soos ’n brief wat in ’n posbus gegooi word, maar nie nou meer nie.

Ek moet in die poskantoor instap en gaan wag vir my pakkie. Kan ek dan vir hulle ook ’n rekening stuur van my tyd wat hulle so mors?

My woonadres is op ’n plaas en dus kan ek nie pakkies direk by my laat aflewer nie.

Ek betaal reeds kostes wanneer ek ’n item bestel.

Ek stem 100% saam met die sakeman. Dis geldgierigheid!

Poskantoor wil uit verknorsing kom Ek verstaan die mense se frustrasie wat aanlyn koop (“Sakeman kla oor poskantoor se ‘geldgierigheid’,” 22/11).

Ek bestel al tien jaar by verskeie oorsese aanlyn winkels en ek het nog nooit hierdie hanteringsheffing betaal nie. Ek het al wel invoerbelasting betaal vir goedere wat die minimum invoerwaarde oorskry het.

As ek bestel, hou my adres nie in Johannesburg op nie – die eindbestemming is Goodwood. Dit is ’n vervoerooreenkoms en hoekom moet jy twee keer vir dieselfde ooreenkoms betaal?

Almal ken die poskantoor se finansiële toestand. Hulle sal enigiets doen om uit hul verknorsing te kom. Hul hele werkswyse is verouderd.

Geen koerier vat meer as twee maande om ’n pakkie van Johannesburg tot in die Kaap te vervoer nie, maar dit is hoe lank ek al verskeie kere gewag het.

Boonop verander hulle die tracking-nommer, waarvoor ek betaal het, na hul eie nommer met aankoms in Johannesburg. Van daar af het jy nie ’n idee waar die pakkie is nie. ’n Klant sal verwag dat so ’n verandering op die poskantoor se stelsel gesien kan word. Daar bestaan nie so iets nie.

Hulle het my na Johannesburg se posdiens verwys om daardie inligting te kry.

Ek moes dit elke keer telefonies doen en dit het my nog geld gekos. Ek het ophou om by wish.com te bestel, want hulle het net die poskantooropsie. Ek bestel my goed by plekke soos AliExpress, wat meer koerieropsies het.

Ek betaal eerder ekstra vir vervoerkoste en wag twee weke as wat ek meer as twee maande wag.

he Western Cape Liquor Authority (WCLA) is calling on licence holders to adhere to the respective due dates and relevant forms that accompany renewals.

In a statement released last Wednesday, the WCLA’s Nwabisa Mpalala says: “It has come to our attention that many licence holders make payment for renewal fees, and pay double the amount in the hope that they (automatically) qualify for the biennial renewal of their licence.”

“For annual renewals you have to renew your liquor licence before 31 December of every year in order for it to be valid the following year, by paying the prescribed renewal fee,” Mpalala says.

“For biennial renewals, the amended Regulation 30 of the Western Cape Liquor Regulations of 2017 determines that a licensee who intends to subscribe to a biennial renewal cycle must lodge with the WCLA a notice in the form of Form 21B by no later than 30 November of the year in which the WCLA has issued the annual renewal notice.

“Therefore one has to complete the relevant form and submit it to us by no later than 30 November [tomorrow].

“Liquor licence holders should ensure that they renew their liquor licence before 31 December 2017 in order for it to be valid for the years 2018 and 2019,” Mpalala says.

The amount for biennial renewals is double that of the annual renewal fee.

Project Description: The proponent, Say Rosy Properties (Pty) Ltd, proposes to construct residential accommodation, on portion 15 of Farm 222. The proposed development will comprise of three storey apartment buildings with associated parking bays, amounting to 31 One Bedroom units which will amount to 35 m² in size per unit; and 228 Two Bedroom units which will amount to 49 m² in size per unit. As the 16 Days of Activism campaign is already underway, Bathabile Dlamini, national minister of social development, encourages Capetonians, especially women and children, to use the department’s award-winning gender-based violence command centre.

This service was created by the department to deal with the scourge of violence, especially against women and children. It is a 24-hour call centre that is available to help survivors of gender-based violence by giving them support and guidance by trained social workers.

It is a comprehensive, integrated system that provides immediate, consistent, coordinated and timely support to victims. Its services are linked to police, emergency management services and the health department.

The call centre uses mobile technology to find the location of a caller, assign the closest social worker in the field, and record and receive continuous feedback on the case. It employs trained social workers who provide immediate counselling to callers and help them avoid violence or minimise further exposure thereto.

The call centre uses the following highlevel components: . Inbound and outbound call management. . GPS location of the caller or victim of gender-based violence. . Mobile application to help social workers intervene and update on the condition of the victim. . A “Please Call Me” facility to enable those without airtime to get a call from the centre. . SMS-based incident referral through a

dedicated SMS line functionality. . Skype-based call functionality to enable people with disabilities, in particular those who are deaf, to also report incidents of gender-based violence using sign language.

A survivor calls the centre from a cellphone, then the caller (with explicit permission) is geographically located, enabling the centre to determine the caller’s closest resources (social worker, police station, hospital, safe house).

It records the particulars of the caller and assigns the closest field social worker to her via a specially developed mobile device application. The information captured by the centre is displayed and the social worker subsequently uses the same application to give feedback to the centre.

This innovative model of social service delivery offers advantages like broadening the base of service delivery to the remotest and most underdeveloped regions of the country, immediate telephonic counselling, speeding up help to victims, and reducing paperwork. The information captured by all the parties displays directly on the mobile applications and the centre software and gives real-time functionality to the department.

Dlamini says the centre is aimed at making the department as responsive as possible to gender-based violence.

She adds that the centre has contributed immensely to the government’s interventions on gender-based violence as a rapid response mechanism to deal speedily and effectively with issues wherever they arise.

it is my ondervinding dat die oorgrote meerderheid van mense wat bydra tot ’n uittredingannuïteitsfonds nie weet dat hulle eintlik lid is van ’n aftreefonds wat soortgelyk is aan ’n pensioenfonds nie.

Een van die gevolge van lidmaatskap van ’n uittredingannuïteitsfonds is dat spesiale reëls geld met betrekking tot die verdeling van die voordele indien ’n lid voor aftrede uit die fonds te sterwe kom.

Dit is belangrik om te verstaan dat die voordele nie noodwendig betaal gaan word aan die persoon of persone wat jy genomineer het om dit te ontvang nie.

Die Wet op Pensioenfondse bepaal dat die trustees van die fonds die voordele regverdig moet verdeel tussen jou afhanklikes en die persoon(e) wat jy genomineer het om dit te ontvang. Vir doeleindes van dié wet is die volgende persone almal afhanklikes: . ’n persoon wat jy regtens verplig is om te onderhou; . ’n persoon wat jy onderhou het ten tyde van jou dood, alhoewel jy nie regtens verplig was om dit te doen nie; . jou gade; . jou kinders, insluitend ’n kind wat ná jou dood gebore is, ’n aangenome kind en ’n buite-egtelike kind; en . ’n persoon vir wie se onderhoud jy regtens aanspreeklik sou wees indien jy nie gesterf het nie.

Dit is inderdaad ’n wye lys van potensiële afhanklikes.

Wanneer die trustees al die afhanklikes en genomineerdes geïdentifiseer het, moet hulle besluit wie van hulle in die voordele moet deel en hoeveel elkeen moet kry. Een of meer van die afhanklikes kan dalk skatryk wees terwyl ander minder gegoed is.

Ten einde die besluit te kan neem, moet die trustees onder meer die volgende faktore oorweeg: . jou wense; . die finansiële omstandighede van die afhanklikes en genomineerde(s); . die toekomstige verdienstevermoë van elke afhanklike en genomineerde; . die mate waarin elke afhanklike en genomineerde afhanklik van jou was; . die ouderdomme van die afhanklikes en genomineerde(s); . die verhouding wat die afhanklikes en genomineerde(s) met jou gehad het; en . die bedrag wat vir verdeling beskikbaar is.

Dit behoort duidelik te wees dat die trustees dikwels ’n moeilike taak het om te besluit hoe om ’n regverdige verdeling van die voordele te doen.

Dit vergemaklik egter die taak van die trustees as jy wel een of meer persone nomineer om die voordele te ontvang deur dit by die fonds op rekord te plaas, omdat jou wense een van die faktore is wat hulle in ag moet neem. Neem ook kennis dat jy nie jou voordele in ’n aftreefonds in jou testament kan bemaak nie. ’n Leser vra na aanleiding van verlede maand se artikel, waar om te belê ten einde die voordele van saamgestelde rente die beste te kan benut.

Omdat die risiko wat mense bereid is om met beleggings te neem, verskil, is my advies dat die verskillende opsies met ’n finansiële beplanner bespreek word.

Train ordeal inspires artist ESMÉ ERASMUS

he ordeal suffered by an artist from Zonnendal in Kraaifontein when he was pushed out of an overcrowded train led him to express his anger in the best way he knows – by painting it.

According to Paul John Daniels (42), who normally paints landscapes, he wants to create awareness about the dangers of overcrowded trains.

He says he took a train to go gallery hopping in Cape Town on Wednesday 8 November.

His ordeal started while he was on his way back from Cape Town to Kraaifontein in the afternoon. At Bellville station, the train suddenly came to a standstill and the passengers had to run to another platform to catch another train.

When the train approached Stikland sta-

tion, there were many people waiting on the platform.

“The train had hardly come to a standstill when the doors opened, and people started pushing and shoving.

“I was standing close to the door. People were trying to get out and people were trying to get in, and in the process I was pushed out of the train.

“I sprained my ankle, but had to push my way back into the train – sore ankle or not!

I had already been on the train for quite a while and just wanted to get home. So much for a day of gallery hopping in Cape Town!” he says.

At home, he remained bothered by the incident. He then decided to do a painting of people boarding an overcrowded train.

“The train could have started to move and I could have been hurt much more seriously. I want people to be aware of the dangers of an overcrowded train,” he says.

he talented Durbanville vocalist and violinist Renate Riedemann, a former member of Sterling EQ, will be singing up a storm when she launches her first music video, “Another Storm”, on Thursday 7 December.

The 31 year old performer started her musical career at Kenridge Primary School and carried it through to DF Malan High School where she matriculated in 2004. She completed her B.Mus degree with distinction at Stellenbosch University and went on to receive her honours degree in musical performance (violin) the following year.

She was appointed as concertmaster of the university’s symphony orchestra in 2007 and honoured with several awards and bursaries for musical performance, as well as academic achievement.

Riedemann formed part of the award-winning instrumental pop group, Sterling EQ, which performed at high-profile events such as the MTN South African Music Awards, Dubai World Travel Awards, FIFA Congress Opening Ceremony and the Gary Player Invitational, to name a few.

The group also enjoyed media attention in various magazines and radio and television programmes such as Top Billing, Expresso, ETV Sunrise, Kwêla, Sistahood and Idols.

The band was offered a record deal at EMI in 2012 and released a successful album titled Pulse, on which Riedemann featured extensively.

The album won a Ghoema Award and a Huisgenoot Tempo Award for Best Instrumental Album.

In March 2015, Renate had the opportunity to perform at the Cape Town Stadium as part of the string section for international pop sensation, Michael Bublé.

She has proven herself as a session musician, having recorded for artists such as Andriëtte Norman, Heinz Winckler, Springbok Nude Girls, Hulle and Johan Oberholzer, among others.

She was also approached by the legendary South African guitarist, composer and producer, Mauritz Lotz, to perform as a guest soloist on his new collaboration album, Kaleidoscopic.

Riedemann has been around the music block, is now ready to embark on her singing career.

Her beautiful voice has secured her a contract with StoneBear and Mayor Records from Stellenbosch.

Her debut single, “Another Storm”, combines the best of both her instrumental talent and her vocal abilities into a fresh, current, yet sophisticated dance track.

At the launch, Riedemann will be joined on stage by Helmut Meijer, Lukas de Beer and Sven Blumer.

The video premiere and exclusive live show will be taking place at Youngblood at 70 Breë Street, Cape Town, starting at 17:00 for 17:30. Guests may start arriving from 16:00 for 16:30. Entry is free.

Inwoners boos oor slordige omgewing NIELEN DE KLERK @nielendk

nwoners in talle areas in die noordelike voorstede is briesend oor die “slegte toestand” van hul plaaslike parke en sypaadjies.

In Stellenberg is inwoners boos oor grassnysels wat “net so gelos is” en in Welgemoed het inwoners begin om self die gras te sny en areas te onderhou.

“Vir die afgelope ses tot agt maande was daar ’n tydperk van tussen vier en vyf maande waar die gras in die parke net nie gesny is nie,” vertel Ingrid Eggert van Stellenberg.

“Toe kontrakteurs uiteindelik ses weke gelede in die omgewing begin werk het, is die parke in ’n skokkende toestand agtergelaat nadat hulle ‘onderhoudswerk’ gedoen het.”

Eggert en haar man het werkers in die park gevra wanneer hulle die grassnysels en onkruid gaan verwyder. “Hulle het baie aggressief geword en op my en my man geskree en gevloek,” vertel sy.

JP Smith, burgemeesterskomiteelid vir veiligheid en sekuriteit, het einde September in ’n verklaring gesê die agterstand is veroorsaak deur wettige prosesse wat buite die Stad se beheer is en wat die aanstelling van kontrakteurs vertraag het.

“Die Stad se departement van parke en ontspanning is bewus van die agterstand met die sny van gras in ons parke, oop areas en begraafplase,” het hy gesê. Smith het gesê dit is onmoontlik om dadelik by alle areas uit te kom, omdat daar weens die agterstand groot hoeveelhede grassnysels is wat gehark en weggeneem moet word.

Die Stad het meer as 6 461 hektaar grond waar gras gesny moet word. Boonop is daar verskeie areas waar die gras nie gesny word

nie, omdat die biodiversiteit of natuurskoon van ’n sekere aard is.

Smith het vir geduld gevra terwyl aandag aan die agterstand gegee word.

Gevra oor die kontrakteurs wat op Eggert geskree het, het Siyabulela Mamkeli, burgemeesterskomiteelid vir die area, gesê hulle sal nie kontrakteurs duld wat die Stad se naam beswadder nie. “Die saak is met die tenderontvanger bespreek en word gemonitor,” het hy belowe.

Die spesifieke kontrakteur in Stellenberg, Women on Board CC, het by navraag gesê hulle is bewus van die voorval en sal die saak opvolg en monitor. ’n Vrou wat by die kontrakteur werk en anoniem wou bly, het gesê hulle werk word dikwels versuur deur lede van die publiek wat met hulle raas, veral weens die agterstand met die grassnyery.

“Die meeste mense is baie ongeskik,” het sy gesê. Volgens haar is dit nie deel van hul mandaat om private eiendomme of private tuine te versorg nie, maar dat mense dikwels ontsteld word omdat hulle dit nie doen nie.

Sy het gesê omdat die gras vir so lank nie gesny is nie, moet hulle verskeie kere dieselfde area kom sny.

“Dit lyk al baie beter,” sê sy.

In Welgemoed het van die inwoners self begin inspring.

Eugene Keyter en sy tuinwerker, Hard Chigunguru, het al die hele Goewerneurstraat se onkruid uit die sypaadjies getrek.

Hy het ook gereël dat die gras op sypaadjies gesny word.

Keyter sê hy het drie jaar gelede in die buurt ingetrek en dit ontstel hom hoe die onderhoud agteruitgegaan het.

“Elke keer as ek hier ry, is ek vies.”

Daarom het hy besluit om self in te spring.

“Ons gaan iets moet doen,” sê hy.

All abuzz over bikes ESMÉ ERASMUS AND NIELEN DE KLERK @erasmusesme @nielendk

Irate residents of Stellenberg are expressing themselves strongly on social media against the proposed development of a 3km public mountain bike track in Mountainview Park in Mountainview Drive, Stellenberg.

The application to build a track on remainder Erf 478 Eversdale has been submitted by Amarider, a mountain bike racing organisation.

In its proposal, Amarider states that it will be financing the implementation of the project and will partner with the Parks and Recreation Department in the management of the park. The park is currently being utilised for jogging, dog walking and various other informal activities.

The City of Cape Town’s Parks and Recreation Department has embarked on a public participation process for the proposed bike track. Although people have time until tomorrow (30 November) to submit comments as part of the pubic participation process, local WhatsApp groups and other social media platforms have been abuzz with negative comments. A petition has also been submitted, stating that bikes will interfere with pedestrians and that the gravel tracks and bikes will cause erosion with dust and noise pollution to abutting properties.

Comments vary from “this is single handed the most idiotic idea I’ve ever heard about ...” to “the track does not belong in an area next to an old age home and church and in a residential area”.

“There are simply not enough positives for us as ratepayers to allow this track to go ahead. The argument about fewer vagrants simply does not make sense, as the opposite will happen. It will put more pressure on the few patrollers and response companies that are already working so hard,” another resident comments.

According to the proposal, the idea is to

encourage schoolchildren and the general public to cycle in a safe environment.

The site will remain a public open space for use by joggers and dog walkers.

The track will be used once a year to host the Spur Schools Mountain Bike League, with two to three smaller activities throughout the year.

Trail runners will also be able to use it on a shared-use basis. The mountain bike track is designed to cross the existing two footpaths as little as possible and at places where visibility is good, according to the proposal.

According to Johannes Badenhorst, who initiated the project, a lot of misinformation is being spread about the track.

“In contrast to what some believe, the project won’t cost taxpayers a cent. Amarider, a non-profit organisation, has agreed to build the track. They have been doing this for a long time and know what they are doing. They are going to build the track in such a way that erosion won’t take place,” he says.

The track won’t see cyclists using pedestrian walkways, and the pathways are mostly far away from each other, Badenhorst emphasises.

He has had a meeting with a local retirement home about fears of noise. “The track won’t be noisy,” he says. “Cycling isn’t noisy.”

The building process won’t be noisy either, he says. The project will simply see ground being moved from one spot to another.

Taki Amira, councillor for ward 21, also says that people appear to be misinformed.

Few people turned up for the public meeting he held with residents in July, mainly due to bad weather, he says.

The comments will now be listed, after which the subcouncil will recommend whether or not the plan should go ahead.

A Russian Xmas at Hugo Lambrechts The annual Christmas concert at the Hugo Lambrechts Music Centre is taking place on Thursday 30 November (tomorrow) at 18:00 at the centre’s auditorium.

The proceeds of the concert will be donated to the TygerBear Foundation for traumatised children and families.

The consulate general of the Russian Federation in Cape Town will host two very accomplished guest artists to perform at the concert – the conductor Pavel Petrenko and the soprano Anna Markarova.

This is part of a cultural cooperation between St Petersburg and Cape Town.

Ethan Lawson, a Hugo Lambrechts pupil, will feature as a soloist in JC Bach’s Cello Concerto in C Minor.

The remaining participants include several orchestras and ensembles from Hugo Lam-

brechts – string orchestras, a wind band, a harp choir and a unique ensemble consisting of 15 guitars and eight singers. There will also be a mass item, which will bring together nearly 200 performers on stage.

The varied programme will include arrangements of popular and lesser known Christmas carols, including a brand new composition for a string orchestra, “Mzanzi Christmas”, by the local composer Anthony Costandius.

A donations box for goods and gifts for the children of the TygerBear project will be available at the centre a week prior to the concert.

Help aquarium to clean up our coastline The V&A Waterfront’s first Ocean Life Festival is taking place until Friday 8 December.

Considering that 80% of pollution in the ocean originates on land, cleaning up the coastline is a high priority for the organisers.

All are welcome to join them on 2 December for a beach walk to collect litter to prevent it from entering the ocean.

Bags will be provided by the Two Oceans Aquarium (spearheading the clean-up), but

participants must bring their own gloves, hat, sunscreen and drinking water in a reusable bottle. The group will meet up at Sea Point beach (at the parking lot closest to the swimming pool) at 10:00 and the event should be over by 12:00. Participation is free.

he Cape Town Fiesta (CTF) is a oneday music festival that has been created for the entire family. Visitors can look forward to a fun-filled day of entertainment, good food and even better music.

The festival will be hosted at the Bevcan Sports Grounds in Epping on Saturday 16 December, a public holiday.

The day promises to be an epic festive experience and is the brainchild of a group of locals who saw a gap in the market for a truly Capetonian music festival.

Cape cardholders help charities B This young girl, a resident of Durbanville Children’s Home, is one of many who will benefit from the donation by the MySchool MyVillage MyPlanet loyalty programme. Her name is withheld for her own protection.

y swiping their MySchool MyVillage MyPlanet loyalty cards, cardholders ensured that two local beneficiaries in the northern suburbs received much-needed cash donations.

The non-profit organisation African Tails, a MyPlanet beneficiary of the programme, received R73 194 during the last fundraising period thanks to shoppers swiping their cards. African Tails, which is based in Milnerton, does charity work with street dogs in Dunoon and Mamre.

The Durbanville Children’s Home, a MyVillage beneficiary, received R38 377 over the latest fiscal. For more than 130 years, the

home has been caring for vulnerable children with no safe place to live.

Funds raised by MyVillage cardholders are used to provide the children with monthly toiletries, school uniforms, shoes and stationery.

The MySchool MyVillage MyPlanet loyalty programme is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year. Launched in 1997, the programme today raises more than R6 million per month for a wide range of schools, charities and conservation organisations.

Learners from six local schools were rewarded for the positive roles they play in their communities at Africa Unite’s second annual awards held in the Civic Centre in the CBD on Friday.

The learners received certificates, medals and trophies.

The participating secondary schools were Masibambane, Simunye and Fons Luminis

secondary schools, as well as Heideveld, Nelson Mandela and Portland secondary schools.

Africa Unite’s annual competition sees participating schools creating their own democracy clubs and imitating what happens in parliament during their own mini-parliament discussions at school.

The competition took the form of a presentation, with each school giving feedback on the work they did throughout the year to make a difference in their lives. The

Learners highlighted that they are aware of the negative impact thereof on individuals and communities.

The competition saw schools and individuals receiving awards in different categories.

The overall winner of the competition was Masibambane Secondary School in Kraaifontein. The school received the most certificates in different categories, including President of the Year, Best School of the Year and the Good Governance Award.

Masibambane was followed by Simunye Secondary School, which won Best Diverse School of the Year and a number of individual awards.

Nelisa Fusa, Masibambane’s “president”, said she was grateful that they scooped more than 10 certificates.

“We worked very hard, sat in a number of meetings and interacted with our community to make sure we were on the right track.

ilver Oaks residents were completely surprised when bulldozers pulled up – all systems go – to start moving land at a planned development in Langverwacht; this while residents are still awaiting the outcome of the appeal they lodged against this development.

Concerned resident Moveen Adams says it makes no sense for this development to go ahead without the necessary sewerage infrastructure in place.

“In a letter we received from the City’s Transport and Urban Development Authority (TDA), it says all measures (referring to infrastructure) must be seen to, and all of these needs must be met, before any type of building will be approved.

“According to my knowledge, nothing has been done to upgrade or solve the huge sewerage problem we are sitting with and yet, to my dismay, I have people clearing the area behind my house to start building their flats and I was never even notified of this,” says Adams.

“I have voiced my concerns and disgust with regard to the City Of Cape Town just ignoring our cries for trying to live a normal tranquil life.

Therefore, should the owner of the land commence with actual development prior to the conclusion of the appeals process, he would be in contravention of the Municipal Planning Bylaw.

As to what would happen to the already overturned land in terms of dust control, in case the residents should win their appeal, the City could not provide an answer at the time of going to print.

Choristers celebrate Christmas with carols

omArt’s popular Festival of Carols concert, which is now in its incredible 19th year, takes place on Sunday 3 December at 16:00 at the Evangelical Lutheran Church in 35th Street, Elsies River.

The ComArt Choristers, under the musical direction of Arline Jephta, will as always delight audience members with a programme of festive season carols, choral music and solo performances by choir members and guest artists.

Wiseman of the East, one of Cape Town’s longest standing Christmas bands, will once again entertain the audience.

The Festival of Carols continues to be an important fixture on the local music calendar, also coinciding with the 16 Days of Activism Against Women and Child Abuse, as well as the commemoration of the freeing of the slaves at the Cape. By celebrating the start of the festive season and inspiring a spirit of joy and goodwill, the festival brings the community together while honouring the local heritage through music, poetry and song.

“This is an especially significant Festival of Carols for us as ComArt embarks on its milestone 20th year in 2018,” says John Davids, ComArt executive director.

“Throughout our journey we have remained committed to promoting community, identity, heritage and dialogue, celebrating our culture through music and the arts

Reflecting the spirit of goodwill, proceeds from the Festival of Carols will again go towards the choristers’ Charity Hamper project, with food products being donated to

poverty-stricken households in the area for the festive season.

Other key projects organised by ComArt this year have included Virginia Davids’ UCT Studio Concert, the Youth Month Showcase in collaboration with Elsies River schools, as well as the Libertas Choir Concert. Importantly, their Rieldans training initiative with learners from local schools has proven very popular and has seen learners doing very well in various competitions.

In addition to the ComArt Choristers, Co-

mArt’s initiatives over the years have encompassed choral and vocal training and performances, youth development programmes, dance and visual arts training as part of Musedi and Elsies Youth Arts Collective, as well as wellness activities and international cultural heritage exchange projects.

Grassy Park Crusaders in free fall SEAN CAMPBELL

A

fter an exceptionally good start to the season (four wins in their first four games), Grassy Park Crusaders are now feeling the pressure.

This weekend saw them suffer their fourth and fifth consecutive defeats against VOB Macaws and Athlone A’s respectively as the first round of the Major League baseball competition was completed.

On Saturday they were outgunned seven hits to two by VOB, who came from behind to win the game 8-3.

Crusaders took the lead in the second inning. After three innings they held a 2-0 lead.

VOB took the lead in the fourth inning, scoring three runs from two hits by pitch, a hit and two errors. They scored another run in the seventh and then four runs from three hits, a hit by pitch, a walk and an error in the eighth inning.

The four errors, five walks and five hits by pitch compounded Crusaders’ situation.

VOB started with former Crusaders player Michael Scritten on the mound. He pitched seven innings, conceding two hits and three runs, with five walks and four strike-outs. He was replaced by Canadian Andy Orfanakos who pitched the last two innings, striking out two hitters.

Crusaders started with Jarrod Williams on the mound before replacing him with Shergill Thompson after 6.1 innings. Thompson lasted one inning before he was replaced

by Brent Fransman who threw the last 1.2 innings.

Zubair Laney (2-3) was VOB’s top hitter.

In Sunday’s game Crusaders lost 10-2 to Athlone A’s.

Crusaders recorded five hits and made nine errors compared to twelve hits and four errors.

Top hitters for the A’s were Mathew Diedericks and Lloyd Stevens (both 3-4).

Crusaders started with Ashwin Kleintjies, who pitched 3.1 innings before he was replaced by Lucien Swartz for 4.2 innings.

A’s used four pitchers: Dean Jacobs pitched for four innings, Ricky Adams for one inning, former Crusaders player Cameron Fortuin for two, and then Carl Michaels closed out the last two innings.

On Saturday Bellville Tygers came from a 7-3 deficit at the top of the fifth inning to defeat former champions Bothasig Knights 14-12 in the top-of-the-log clash.

They remain unbeaten at PP Smit Sports Grounds.

For both teams it was an uncharacteristically high-scoring game, with many hits and errors.

Bothasig used three pitchers: Darryn Smith was replaced in the sixth inning when he came unstuck, and Keenan Clarke was later replaced by Kyle Botha.

Kevin Townend pitched for three innings before Russell Olivier replaced him, and Jonathan Phillips pitched the last two innings.

Phillips provided the highlight of the game with a solo home run in the second inning.

Spectators invited to join ultra-trail action Ultra-trail Cape Town, which takes place on Saturday, sees three trail races of 100km, 65km and 35km traverse sections of Table Mountain, Lion’s Head, Signal Hill, Orangekloof, Llandudno, Hout Bay, the Constantia Winelands, the upper slopes of Kirstenbosch and Devil’s Peak.

Supporters can join along the route to enjoy the natural beauty and festive vibe, encourage the athletes and have a fun day out.

There will be designated spectator zones at Gardens Tech Rugby Club (the start and finish of the races), on the Alphen Green Belt and at the UCT Tennis Club.

There will be regular shuttles for supporters for an easy hop-on, hop-off option throughout the day.

Tickets for the bus service can be purchased beforehand at the race registration and cost R35 for adults and R20 for children

under 12.

Spectators can also buy tickets on the bus on the day at R45 for adults and R30 for children under 12.

The ticket includes unlimited rides, and the first ride can be taken at any of the locations. Shuttles will depart from each location every 30 minutes from the top of the hour.

Die Haaie se woordvoerder, Novashni Chetty, was net so opgewonde omdat die Haaie die gasheer is vir beide toernooie.

ie Universiteit van Wes-Kaapland (UWK) is een van tien universiteite wat aan ’n fees van studentesport die naweek van 1 tot 3 Desember in Durban gaan deelneem.

Dis die eerste keer dat die Varsitysewesen -strandvlugbal op dieselfde naweek aangebied word.

Om te wys dat die UWK ernstig is om sy trofeekas aan te vul, het hulle vir albei sportsoorte ingeskryf.

Die universiteite wat om die seweskroon gaan meeding, is Noordwes (NWU), Nelson Mandela (NMNU), die Universiteit van Johannesburg (UJ), Sentrale Universiteit van Tegnologie (CUT), Ikeys, Kovsies, Tukkies, Maties en die Universiteit van KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN).

Die sewestoernooi word op Kingspark, die Haaie se tuisveld, en die vlugbal op die strand aangebied. Die stad Ethekwini, Rage

en die Haaie bied saam die sportfees aan.

Die ses universiteite wat aan die strandvlugbal gaan deelneem, is Vaal Universiteit van Tegnologie (VUT), UJ, UWK, Tshwane Universiteit van Tegnologie (TUT), Universiteit van Limpopo (UL) en Tukkies.

Die Maties is die houers van die seweskroon en sal alles in hul vermoë doen om nie daarvan afstand te doen nie. Hulle het hul buurman, UWK, met 19-5 in die eindstryd verslaan. Die UWK wil vanjaar die bordjies verhang en die Maties met die kous oor die kop terug Kaap toe stuur.

Die UWK is juis die houers van die strandvlugbaltitel, nadat hy verlede jaar net-net met 33-29 oor Tukkies geseëvier het en nou wil voortbou op sy vertoning van verlede jaar.

Dis nie altyd maklik om in twee toernooie een te wen en in die ander as naaswenner gekroon te word nie.

Michael Varney, bemarkingsbestuurder van Varsity Sports, was in die wolke omdat

mekaarbring vir ’n naweek van kompetisie en ook kameraderie. Ons wens al die spanne voorspoed toe met die herinneringe wat hulle gedurende die naweek gaan maak, wat hulle vir baie jare sal bybly,” het sy gesê.

Albei toernooie begin op Vrydag 1 Desember met die seweskragmeting tussen die Maties en die tuisspan, UKZN, wat om 09:00 afskop. Die eerste strandvlugbalstryd is tussen VUT en UJ en wedstryde sal regstreeks op SuperSport uitgesaai word.

Tafeltennis: Livingston­Kensing­

ton het onlangs sy 80ste bestaansjaar gevier met ’n tafeltennistoernooi. Keenen Jooste, ’n lid van die top­tafelten­ nisklub Belhar en ’n leerder aan die Hoërskool De Kuilen, was ook een van die genooide SA juniors wat kon deelneem. Keenen het toe sy kans aangegryp en al sy wedstryde gewen, waarna hy dieselfde aand by ’n spoggeleent­ heid gekroon is 2017 se junior Liv­Ken­kampioen. Keenen het ook twee weke gelede sy Westelike Provinsie­ en nasionale o.15­titel suksesvol verdedig.

“I

t ain’t about how hard you hit, it’s about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward; how much you can take and keep moving forward, that’s how winning is done,” is die wyse woorde van die legendaries Rocky Balboa – woorde wat Edin du Toit (12) elke keer inspireer as hy in die bokskryt klim.

Edin sal die Wes-Kaap van 12 tot 14 Desember in Johannesburg tydens die Suid-Afrikaanse amateurbokskampioenskap verteenwoordig.

“Toe ek in graad 1 was, het ek en my gesin Rocky 4 gekyk. Dit was awesome gewees. Ek onthou ek en my sussie het in die oefen-scene sommer saam geoefen en daardie volgende dag wou ek begin boks,” vertel Edin van die Gereformeerde Laerskool Bellville.

Edin word deur Johannes Salie by Xtreme Boxing Club in Welgemoed afgerig en die twee vorm ’n gedugte kombinasie. Salie het self al diep spore in boks getrap en is steeds ná 20 jaar aktief as ’n professionele bokser.

Tot dusver was dit nie ’n maklike pad vir die jong bokser nie, en sy eerste geveg op die ouderdom van agt jaar, is iets wat hom sterker gemaak het, hoewel dit nie ’n goeie begin was nie.

“Edin het ’n hou op die neus gevat en die

geveg verloor. Hy het besluit om harder te oefen en gevra vir ’n herontmoeting in die kryt met die einste bokser wat hom geklop het. Edin het die geveg gewen en gewys wat in hom steek.

“Sy pa, Flip, is ’n man wat sy seun onderskraag in moeilike tye. Sy ondersteuning moet nie onderskat word in sy seun se sukses nie,” vertel Salie.

“Tot dusver is ons op koers en dit was ons ideaal om die Wes-Kaapse span te haal. Ek oefen hard in die gimnasium en ek draf gereeld en doen sparring teen Daniel Pontack, wat self ’n provinsiale bokser is,” sê Edin.

“Omdat ek self ook baie lief is vir rugby, is ek gaande oor die All-Black-rugbyspeler en bokser Sonny-Bill Williams. Ek hou net van die manier hoe hy rugby speel en hy is in eie reg ’n uitstekende bokser,” vertel Edin.

Wat in die toekoms vir Edin voorlê sal net die tyd leer, maar Salie voorsien ’n blink toekoms vir die jong bokser. “Hy is nog jonk en het verseker baie om te leer, maar met sy toewyding en talent skort daar niks.

“My gut feeling is dat hy nog ’n wêreldklasswaargewigbokser kan word. Suid-Afrika streef al jare daarna om die volgende Gerrie Coetzee, Kallie Knoetze of Pierre Coetzer op te lewer. Ons werk hard om hierdie droom ’n werklikheid te maak,” sê Salie.

Edin du Toit en sy afrigter, Johannes Salie, is hard aan die werk in die bokskryt.

Killarney closes the curtain on 2017 season ADRIAN PHEIFFER The Killarney International Raceway will be closing the 2017 motorsport curtain with a major double whammy on Saturday.

With more events than at any other meeting this season, the first is due for an early 09:00 start. This signals the start of the final round of the hugely successful Power Series sponsored by Wingfield Motors, with media support from Radio KFM. The programme includes a bikers’ breakfast run grand prix, as well as a variety of Mike Hopkins motorcycle events. There will also be races for Fine and Classic cars, Supercars, the big V8 Masters, and Formula Libre single seaters.

Later in the afternoon the action switches across to the stock car circuit, where it is due

to continue until early evening. Oval track spectators will be able to select a seat of their choice on the new rallycross grandstands, to help them enjoy the fourth round of the Cape Hell Drivers’ smash-’n-grab summer championship.
