After a long battle on the side of concerned residents, the City of Cape Town has finally approved the installation of a permanent traffic camera on the corner of Okavango and Frans Conradie roads. The city last week confirmed that the matter was again discussed and that the camera review committee approved the speed camera at this dangerous intersection. According to the department of
traffic services of the city, a process of securing the new camera is currently taking place. This will entail obtaining the necessary approvals from the local and provincial departmental offices, after which installation will take place. However, according to a city official this could be a time-consuming process as other important role players such as the departments of roads and electricity also have to consent. Prior to this, the first request to have such a camera installed made
in August last year was rejected by the city. According to the results of the first speed evaluations done by the camera review commitee, held in December last year, the conditions did not meet the criteria to justify the erection of a permanent traffic camera. The public however repudiated this, saying that this part of Okavango Road has become a “racetrack” where motorists and motorcylists daily exceed the formal 60km/h speed limit, and over weekends speedsters “dice” one another

on this one kilometre stretch. According to several residents who live in close proximity to the road, the noise emanating from this constant contempt of traffic rules, is unbearable. Ward councillor Carin Brynard also commented that this particular road needed more intensive monitoring, and supported the initial request. Despite a media enquiry to the city in February, posing several questions as to why the request was rejected, TygerBurger never received a response from the city,

save to say that another request was to be brought before the subcouncil in March. On enquiring about the length of the process, the city did not comment at the time of going to press, but Councillor Carin Brynard expressed her satisfaction with the outcome of the second camera review committee. “I hold thumbs that it will go through the other official processes smoothly and that final approval will be forthcoming from the other forums which need to be consulted as soon as possible,” she said.
