Two local parks get ‘grabbed’ City officials condemned land invasion in strongly-worded statements after the apparent grabbing of land at two City parks in Wallacedene last week. Mayco member for community services and health, Zahid Badroodien, says the invasion of City property and land prohibits effective service delivery and the development of open spaces. At the site in Wallacedene (pictured) play equipment was damaged, and thrown in the streets, which posed a health hazard for children, he says.

PAROW: ‘CUSTOMERS HARASSED’

Sex workers ‘kill business’ RICHARD ROBERTS @richardjohn_rj

B

usiness owners in McIntyre Street, Parow, say sex workers in the area harm their business. Some claim that sex workers harass their customers which often makes people fearful of visiting the area again. Sex workers usually operate between McIntyre Street, First Avenue and Robertson Street – metres away from Voortrekker Road. One of the disgruntled business owners told TygerBurger that some of the sex workers also threaten his staff. “They come inside our stores and harass us,” he says. He says prostitution is a major problem in the area, that the sex workers loiter and solicit customers right in front of his door, and that as a business owner who suffers as a result thereof, he is fed-up.

“This has been ongoing for more than a year now and nothing has been done about it.” He claims that some of the sex workers reside at a house located nearby. Another business owner claimed that the occupants of the said house were nearly evicted two weeks ago, but that the eviction had been unsuccessful. This was confirmed by Capt Kevin Williams, Parow police spokesperson, who says the sheriff of the court visited the residence and that an eviction order was executed. He says the police only attended as observers on the day to prevent possible unruliness. A community meeting between the business fraternity and other role-players was held recently where the issue regarding the sex workers was discussed. The meeting was attended by the Parow police station commander, Col Tebogo Jacobs, and a sector

commander. Williams says the main concerns discussed at the meeting were drugs being sold in the area and prostitution. “The position of the station commander is this: activities of drugs and prostitution in the area are being monitored, and organised search and seizure operations will be undertaken,” says Williams. The meeting was also attended by ward councillor Jacoline Visser, who says the increasing number of sex workers in Parow is concerning to all those impacted by it. “I think the bad economic situation in the country forces more people to practise prostitution. My concern is not only the prostitutes themselves, but their clientele. They are the people encouraging and upholding prostitution. “In my view, men or women using these people must be charged with criminal offences. They are creating problems such as the

decay of communities and devaluation of properties in certain areas. I am very concerned and agree with business owners and residents that we have to do everything within the law to stop this behaviour and activity,” Visser says. Another business owner who wishes to remain anonymous told the newspaper that the situation is getting progressively worse. “They are roaming the streets trying to pick up business; we as rate-payers, property owners and business owners are suffering as a result of this.” He claims that incidents of petty theft and robbery also go hand in hand with this type of business. “We have clients who may not come back to the area.” He says at the meeting new ways of addressing this issue were discussed. These include the installation of new CCTV cameras at certain points in the business area.
