A

motion of urgent need was brought forward at a subcouncil 3 meeting last week to have a piece of vacant land in Richwood developed for recreational purposes.

The motion was submitted by ward 1 councillor, Cheryl Visser at the meeting on Thursday February 20.

The vacant land is located between the N7

highway and Woodlands Drive in Richwood which runs parallel to the highway.

“The current fence between Richwood and the N7 is practically non-existent,” she told subcouncil.

Visser said the area, which was partly created to manage storm water drainage from higher areas, has over many years presented all sorts of maintenance issues.

It is suggested now that recreation facilities such as mountain bike tracks, a skateboard park and multi-purpose surfaces for dif-

ferent ball sports be built in the area.

“In providing these facilities it will be necessary to fence some of these facilities off to prevent children entering the N7.

“This will also safeguard and protect the facilities provided,” Visser said.

The motion was seconded by Gideon Kriel, PR councillor for ward 1, and supported by fellow ward councillors. It also suggested that council facilities such as a cash office, a localised parks depot and a satellite facility for Fire and Rescue Services be developed.

“It is therefore recommended that the director of parks and recreation be tasked to investigate the establishing of sports facilities such as a mountain bike track, skateboard park, multipurpose surfaces for different ball sports, with a cost estimation done in order to obtain budget provision in the forthcoming financial years,” Visser said.

It is also suggested that the executive directors for finance and safety and security be tasked to investigate the possible establishing of council facilities, Visser added.

Die polisie waarsku vroue om waaksaam te wees vir dié verneukers, wat veral op ouer vroue toeslaan.

Twee sulke sake het die afgelope maand onder die Brackenfell-polisie se aandag gekom.

In een saak is ’n vrou van laat in die vyftig R400 000 kwyt nadat sy ’n romanse met ’n man op ’n afspraak-webwerf aangeknoop het.

Hy het homself voorgedoen as ’n kontrakwerker in Namibië.

“Nadat hulle ’n paar weke aanlyn gesels het, het hy haar belowe dat hy Suid-Afrika toe sou kom om met haar te trou. ’n Week of wat voor sy kwansuise aankoms in SuidAfrika het hy haar gebel en gesê hy benodig dringend R400 000 om werktoerusting te vervang wat onklaar geraak het,” verduidelik kapt. Erica Crous, polisiewoordvoerder.

Die niksvermoedende vrou het die geld vir hom in ’n bankrekening oorbetaal as ’n lening, net om nooit weer van hom te hoor nie.

“Sy profiel is dadelik van die webwerf verwyder en sy selfoonnommer, wat nie geregistreer is nie, van die netwerk af. Die bankrekening is ook dadelik gesluit. Hy het letterlik soos mis voor die son verdwyn etlike minute nadat die geld in sy rekening gewys

het,” sê Crous.

In ’n ander saak is ’n 70-jarige vrou uit sowat R2 000 bedrieg en verder afgepers toe sy ’n internetromanse met ’n man op Facebook aangeknoop het.

“Die man het homself voorgehou as ’n ingenieur in Engeland. Nadat hulle ’n rukkie gesels het, het hy vir haar gesê hy sal vir haar ’n duur geskenk stuur. Hy het haar ook uitgelok met foto’s van duur Gucci-handsakke. “’n Week of wat later het ’n kamstige koeriermaatskappy met die naam Royal Mail haar gekontak en vermeld dat haar pakkie in Suid-Afrika aangekom het en dat sy sowat R2 000 by Pep Stores moet gaan inbetaal om dit af te haal,” sê Crous.

Nadat sy die geld inbetaal het, het Royal Mail haar weer gekontak, maar dié keer afgepers om R300 000 in ’n bankrekening in te betaal.

“Die man was aggressief en het haar vertel dat daar kwansuis R500 000 ‘swart’ geld [deur misdaad bekom] in die pakkie was wat persoonlik aan haar geaddresseer is, en dat hy haar by die polisie sou aangee mits sy nie die geld oorbetaal nie.

“In dié stadium het sy bang geraak en die polisie gekontak. Sy was te bang om ’n saak te open en dit het baie oortuiging van die polisiebeampte gekos om die vrou te oortuig dat sy bedrieg is,” sê Crous.

Die Brackenfell-polisie moes haar ook bystaan om die man van haar sosialemediablad te verwyder.

“Wanneer die bedrieërs vir die eerste keer kontak maak, stuur hulle ook gewoonlik lang liefdesbriewe.”

Crous sê dié soort briewe is gewoonlik standaard en kan met ’n Google-soektog opgespoor word op webwerwe wat vroue juis oor die misdadigers waarsku.

“Hulle vra gewoonlik eers vir klein bedrae geld, wat dan stelselmatig meer word.

“Dis gewoonlik reisgeld, geld vir werktoerusting wat breek en selfs geld om borgtog te betaal wanneer hulle ‘onregmatig’ in hegtenis geneem word.

“Dié misdadigers is heeltemal gewetenloos en is wel bewus daarvan dat dit eensaamheid is wat vroue kwesbaar maak vir so ’n aanslag,” sê sy.

As jy vermoed dat jy moontlik ’n slagoffer van so ’n sindikaat is, kontak dadelik die polisiekantoor.

Subcouncil meets in ‘darkness’ RICHARD ROBERTS @richardjohn_rj

L

oad shedding did not deter ward councillors and officials from the City of Cape Town to continue discussing items on the agenda during last week’s subcouncil 3 meeting in Milnerton.

The meeting at the municipal offices in Milnerton Drive started at 10:00 with the lights going out five minutes later.

Subcouncil manager, Johannes Brand, did however warn those in attendance about the expected load shedding scheduled between 10:00 and 12:00.

Eskom, South Africa’s power utility, rolled out Stage 2 loadshedding on Thursday

last week.

Ward councillors, proportional representation councillors and officials from the City’s various departments who attended the meeting were requested to speak up, as the power outage also affected the microphones. The window blinds were opened to allow light into the council chambers.

Some of the items discussed include residents who are being asked to better display their house numbers in order for emergency services to quickly locate a house, the City’s application to source power from suppliers other than Eskom, and applications for the 2021 school year opening this week.

Subcouncil 3 includes wards 1, 4, 5, 70, 107 and 113.

Mother dies in car crash ESMÉ ERASMUS @erasmusesme A mother (29) from Parow died in a car accident on Monday at 06:45 on Vissershok Road – opposite the farm Vissershok outside Durbanville.

Her critically injured son (7), who was in the car with her, was taken away to hospital by helicopter.

According to Capt Marchell Rhode, spokesperson for the Durbanville police,

three vehicles were involved in the accident, a silver Kia, a green Kia and a silver Ford Ranger bakkie.

“The mother and her son were driving in the silver Kia in the direction of Durbanville. She allegedly lost control and collided head-on with the silver Ford Ranger bakkie.

“A green Kia then collided from the back into the bakkie,” Rhode said.

A case of culpable homicide will be investigated, he said.

RICHARD ROBERTS @richardjohn_rj A safe space, or shelter, for homeless people in the Table View area will hopefully someday become a reality, that is to say if all the necessary departments within the City of Cape Town eventually come on board.

The safe space in ward 107 will service various other wards within subcouncil 3 including ward 1, which includes Richwood, Welgelegen, Panorama and Plattekloof as well as ward 5, which includes Edgemead and Bothasig.

According to ward 107 councillor, Nicky Rheeder, there were some issues with the erf numbers of the property identified for such a shelter in Table View. She told TygerBurger a site visit will be conducted again at the property on Friday 27 March.

The safe space matter has been on the council agenda since 2018, Rheeder said.

Since then several site visits had taken place between her, ward 103 councillor Joy Solomons, and law enforcement officers, “but no one from the department of social development,” Rheeder said.

Rheeder was speaking at the subcouncil 3 meeting on Thursday last week when she expressed her unhappiness.

Nazlie du Toit, a representative from

the City of Cape Town’s department of social development, said they cannot provide safe spaces in all of the wards as the department does not have the funds.

She said currently the department is looking at establishing safe spaces – similar to the one in Culemborg, Cape Town – in the central business district (CBD) near to the Strand Street Quarry, in Bellville near the Paint City building on Robert Sobukwe Drive and in Mitchell’s Plain where a location has not yet been confirmed.

Asked by Rheeder why another shelter is needed in the CBD, Du Toit said that this area has the highest number of homeless people.

“To operate a safe space we require R8,3 million per annum,” Du Toit said.

Rheeder said homeless people tend to move around in the Parklands, Blouberg and Table View areas and that the area is in much need of such a facility.

Rheeder also added that the shelter will benefit wards 1, 4, 5, 103, 107 and 23.

She said often homeless people want to go to a shelter, but they also do not want to leave the area as all of their possessions are there.

Cheryl Visser, ward 1 councillor, highlighted the need for a shelter in her ward and requested to be part of the follow-up site visit.

Medical interns welcomed A group of new medical interns was recently welcomed by the provincial minister of health, Dr Nomafrench Mbombo, at the Tygerberg Hospital.

The newly qualified junior doctors will be completing their two-year-long internship at public health facilities across the province.

“The interns are from across the country and have been placed in our system to help them gain the necessary experience.

he online application system for schools in the Western Cape have improved so much that more than 100 000 applications for Grade 1 and Grade 8 learners were received.

The application period for learners opened on 17 February, but was hindered by problems making it difficult for parents to apply.

The situation became so dire that the provincial education department issued a statement bemoaning the situation.

It even gave a directive to schools to accept manual applications.

Bronagh Hammond, spokesperson for the department, says most of the problems have been solved.

“The system has improved. The technical glitches have been resolved. We apologise

for the inconvenience experienced,” says Hammond.

The breakdown of how many applications were submitted last week are Monday (30 275), Tuesday (19 621), Wednesday (26 747), Thursday 916 808) and Friday (8730).

According to Hammond the total of 102 181 include applications to multiple schools, because parents can apply to four different schools.

“Since the start of the application process parents have 29 days until the process closes.

“While we do not want parents to wait till the last minute, there is sufficient time for all to successfully complete the process.

“Applications are not approved on a ‘first come, first served’ basis.

“After 17 March, schools will select applications based on the overall batch received up to 17 March 2020,” says Hammond.

Friends of Tygerberg Hills get together The Friends of Tygerberg Hill’s much-anticipated talk by Professor Mike Bruton was cancelled last month due to loadshedding.

Burton will now give his talk on the life and work of Marjorie Courtenay-Latimer on 3 March. The illustrated talk is on the fascinating life of one of South Africa’s pio-

neering female museologists, ornithologists and palaeontologists.

Pensioner tied up during robbery A

pensioner from Bothasig remained tied up the entire night after a house robbery, before police were notified of her ordeal.

The house robbery occurred near to the police station, WO Jacques Mostert, police spokesperson, says.

According to Mostert a member of the community alerted Sgts Elton Baron and Reggie Mars on Wednesday about the incident.

Upon investigating, the police discovered that the homeowner, an 83-year-old woman, had been tied up. A vehicle containing stolen property was found nearby, Mostert says.

“They learned that she had been overpowered on Tuesday morning and was tied up since then.

“According to the homeowner she went out to her vehicle when she was overpowered by a man who tied her to a chair,” Mostert says.

The house was ransacked and a large quantity of property was stolen. The suspects used the victim’s vehicle to transport the stolen property.

The police recovered the property with an estimated value of R100 000.

Two suspects, aged 55 and 50 years, were arrested. The duo are both residents of Bo-

New recruits welcomed RICHARD ROBERTS @richardjohn_rj Bothasig police welcomed eight new recruits to the service who will hopefully ensure extra safety and security in the community and surrounding areas.

The new members are Consts Bongiswa Mhlaba, Amos Msebe, Marco Hendricks, Emile Samaai, Siviwe Mancayi, Keawu Links, Onke Phetheni and Sivuyile Qokombana.

The new group of constables recently completed their college training and were placed at the police station to complete the last practical training of their studies, before they finishing the final phase of their training, police spokesperson WO Jacques Mostert says.

“They have been allocated to mentors who will guide and assist them during this phase,” Mostert explains.

Station commander Lt Col Patrick Jacobs, was very appreciative for the additional members who will also help to ad-

dress the shortage of police staff.

According to him it will lessen the pressure on the current staff as the new recruits will fill much needed posts.

“He mentioned that they are extremely positive to serve and engage with their new community as set out in the Community Policing Strategy. They are our police members of the future, and with them the future looks bright. They are very positive and really want to learn,” Mostert said.

As the safety of the new officers is a very high priority, Jacobs wasted no time to introduce them to a security expert to sharpen their self-defence skills in order to protect themselves when performing duties in the area.

Capt Anel Botes, visible policing commander, mentioned that she was very impressed with the maturity and discipline showed by the new recruits.

“They were very positive and immediately started making their mark while performing duties on the shifts.”

Small business brings pride ESMÉ ERASMUS @erasmusesme

F

or a 33-year-old Zimbabwean woman from Fisantekraal, learning how to do beauty massages changed her life.

Stella Kamau, once mostly unemployed, was part of the first intake of students by Skin Clays in Durbanville, about two years ago.

The students were taught to do massages in a 12-month apprenticeship.

Stella has now opened her own small massage business at a house in Eversdal, where she uses Skin Clays products she has bought wholesale.

While she could not speak English at the time of her intake, she is now fluent in English; she even

speaks some Afrikaans.

Stella regularly takes part in massage days at Boschendal or Lourensford wine estates, corporate wellness days or markets such as the CY market as part of the student spa project of Skin Clays. The students mostly do hand and neckand-shoulder massages and foot scrubs.

“There is no cost to the students, but they need to get to the training sessions at their own expense and we are not able to pay them while training.

“To help them earn an income during this period, we offer corporate services such as ‘desk massages’ for companies with call centres or at offices; and pamper stations at work places, markets and expos where they get to do their practical hours while earning 50% of the profit from these services,” explains Ronel Botes, co-owner of Skin Clays.

“They are also taught about costing,” she says.

Stella was one of the first to attend a crochet workshop, hosted at Eversdal Guest House on Saturday 15 February. They were taught to crochet different objects, including a face cloth, which are sold to sustain the crochet project.

Skin Clays was founded by Karen Vosloo from Sonstraal Heights in 2010. Karen, a qualified nurse, started to make glycerine soaps, which she sold at markets. It was tough getting into the market, and after she read an article about the beauty benefits of clay, she started to experiment with soaps and body creams with clay.

“Clay is hidrofobic and absorbs oil and impurities,” she explains.

This is how Skin Clays was born.

She marketed her products at Stellenberg gift markets since 2011.

That was where she met her partner, Ronel from Eversdal, in November 2017. Ronel, trained in therapeutic massage and with a background in running beauty spas, approached her and they started to add spa products to their range – mostly liquid soaps, scrubs, skin creams and a room mist.

Ronel worked for Goji Spa for eight months and also at Rain Africa for six years, where she handled factory, wholesale, training set-up and franchising duties.

Karen and Ronel have also developed a range of clay face products and hope to open their first spa shop in the next year.

Their third intake of 10 students for the massage course will start as soon as they have completed interviews by the end of February. The students receive free training in massaging and have the opportunity to earn an income when taking part in massage days.

Why are they doing this? “It makes us feel good. People constantly ask us for work. It is inspiring to see how our students flourish when they have learned a new skill. This is our social responsibility project,” Ronel and Karen says.

“We use unskilled women, also pensioners, and teach them how to crochet a specific template product which we market and sell on their behalf.

“We provide them with crochet hooks and bamboo and cotton blend thread,” Ronel says.

In Mitchell’s Plain the crochet project is run by two local women.

The crochet project was extended to Fisantekraal about four months ago, where classes are presented once a month. The project has now also been extended to Khayelitsha.

Tazné’s case brings thousands to court TARRYN-LEIGH SOLOMONS @tarryns07 Goodwood police are anticipating another big crowd when the man accused of the kidnapping and murder of Tazné van Wyk makes his second court appearance on Friday 17 April.

Emotions were running high outside Goodwood magistrate’s court on Friday 21 February as Moyhdian Pangkaeker (54) made his first appearance.

Outside court, about 1 500 supporters gathered, chanting for the death penalty to be brought back. They chased after a police van transporting another suspect, thinking it was Pangkaeker.

“Fortunately there were no incidents which needed police action. We cordoned off a section of Voortrekker Road, from the court until Hugo Street as we expected a big turnout of people. We are however anticipating a bigger turnout when he makes his next appearance,” said police spokesperson Capt Waynne Theunis.

On Friday 21 February, Pangkaeker entered the packed court showing visible injuries which he claimed were inflicted by police.

Tazné’s parents, Terence Manuel and Carmen van Wyk, stood motionless as the man who had allegedly taken their eight-year-old daughter’s life stood less than ten metres away from them.

“I am Tazné’s mother’s aunt. My family is very devastated. I feel like I have a grudge burning inside me.

The last time I saw her was the Thursday before she went missing. She was playing very peacefully at the park which is enclosed and adjacent to where she stayed.

“This is really a difficult time for everyone because we just want to know why he killed her?

“What did she do to deserve this? She was such a good and happy child,” said Mpanssi.

TygerBurger visited her home on Thursday 20 February, only hours after the family had received the news that her body was found.

Confusion over borehole water THABANG KUAHO @thab_journo A Peerless Park East resident is dumbfounded after the City of Cape Town apparently told him that water from his borehole contaminates water from the City’s grid.

Despite him disconnecting grid water from his toilet, At Grobler says officials who visited his house were adamant that his borehole water is a danger to other residents.

Grobler says he only uses the borehole water to flush his toilet and water his garden.

“I had disconnected the meter water supply to my toilet and the tap in the garden.

I do not see how this could contaminate grid water,” Grobler says.

Despite going from pillar to post trying to sort the issue out, Grobler remains hope-

“All I need is an explanation on how my borehole water is a problem,” he explains.

Grobler says he is disappointed by how this issue has been handled.

“I have been making numerous calls, but the situation has not been fixed.”

Mayco member for water and waste, Xanthea Limberg, says water inspectors are in the process of inspecting all registered borehole and well-point users to ensure that alternative water use installation complies with the City’s water bylaw and guidelines.

Limberg says all boreholes and wellpoints must be registered with the City.

Tazné disappeared from her home in Ravensmead on Friday 7 February.

Her body was found in a storm water drain along the N1 outside of Worcester after Pangkaeker pointed it out to police on Wednesday 19 February.

Magistrate Bukiwe Sambudla postponed the case to Friday 17 April for further investigation. Sambudla was informed by Pangkaeker’s lawyer that he had injuries to his ribs, neck and wrists.

“He also showed injuries to his right leg and left arm,” Sambudla said. Defence lawyer Nico Janse van Rensburg told the court that his client won’t be applying for bail, to which state prosecutor Michael Greenwood responded, “if a bail application is made, the state will oppose it.”

Jermaine Carelse, woordvoerder van die Stad Kaapstad se brandweerdienste, sê hulle is om 11:30 van die brand in kennis gestel. Volgens hom was die huis reeds in vlamme toe die reddingsdienste daar opgedaag het.

“Terwyl hulle besig was om dié brand te blus, is gerapporteer dat nog twee huise in Carstensstraat aan die brand is,” sê Carelse. Die straat is naby Parowstraat geleë. Dis nog onduidelik of die twee voorvalle met mekaar verband hou.

“Every owner of premises must ensure that any well, borehole or well-point installation relating to alternative water or any other excavation relating thereto located on their premises is adequately safeguarded from creating a health nuisance and is not filled in a way or with material that may cause an adjacent well, borehole or underground source of water to become polluted or contaminated in any way,” Limberg says.

If found that borehole or well-point water does indeed contaminate drinking water, the City has the right to immediately shut off the drinking water supply from the property.

“However, our water inspectors would firstly and courteously address the consumer to immediately disconnect the borehole or well-point or any other alternative water supply from drinking water supply.

“Only once the water installation is compliant and passes an inspection may the borehole supply be recommissioned,” she adds.

arow is geleë sowat 20 km, oftewel ’n halfuur, van die naaste strand af. Dit is dus beslis die laaste plek waar ’n mens sou verwag om by ’n walvismuseum in te stap.

Die Khoisan-, Walvis- en Mariene Museum, soos dit heet, is geleë te Hopkinsstraat 5, waar Ken Botes (69), uitvoerende hoof en voormalige walvisstasie-inspekteur, besoekers verwelkom.

Volgens Ken is daar reeds in 2010 met die restourasiewerk begin aan die erfenisgebou wat in 1950 voltooi is.

“Die dag toe ons hier instap, het die prostitute hier uitgehardloop.

“Haweloses het dit gebruik as blyplek en daar is oral ontlas. Mense het die deure, vensters en al die pype gesteel.

“Die plafon was bros en beskadig, die vloere gebreek en mure beskadig,” het Ken aan TygerBurger tydens ’n besoek aan die museum verlede week vertel.

Dit het drie jaar geneem om die gebou op te knap.

Die opknappingswerk is gedoen met behulp van donateurs, vrywilligers, mense wat daarin belê het en nie-regeringsorganisasies, waarvan sommige tot vandag toe nog die museum help.

Binnekant is daar heelparty uitstallings wat oud en jonk sal verstom – veral die miljoene jare oue skelette van verskillende tipes walvisse, die oeroue wapens van die Khoisan (die eerste walvisjagters in SuiderAfrika) en verskeie ander mariene lewe.

Ken, wat jare lank as inspekteur in die walvisjag-bedryf in Durban in KwaZulu-Natal gewerk het, sowel as in Australië vir ’n ruk lank, sê die walvis en mariene lewe, sowel as die Khoisan-tradisie is sy passie en iets wat hy wil bewaar.

“Hier is ’n versameling van meer as 160

jaar. Sommige is tot 10 miljoen jaar oud.

Daar is ’n versameling ter waarde van omtrent R2 miljoen hier.”

Weens ’n tekort aan ruimte kan al die artefakte egter nie uitgestal word nie.

Buiten die skelette, wapens en mariene lewe is daar ook harpoene, kanonne, verskillende kreefspesies, walvistande en alle soorte seespinnekoppe te sien.

Ken het ook ’n ruk lank by die munisipaliteit gewerk voordat hy die taak gegee is om die museum aan die gang te kry.

“Ons wou dit oorspronklik langs die kus hê en het gekyk na strande soos Monwabisi en selfs Melkbos.”

Monwabisi was dit egter ’n gevaarkwessie en Melkbosstrand was te ver van die skole en gemeenskappe wat hulle graag wou bedien, sê Ken. Die museum ontvang gereeld skoolbesoeke.

Ken sê die museum is byna daagliks in gebruik.

“Ons is vol bespreek. Hier kom leerders en hier word ook kerk gehou.

“Nie-regeringsorganisasies hou gereeld vergaderings hier en maatskappye en regeringsdepartemente bied ook dikwels lesings hier aan,” sê Ken. Opleidingskursusse word ook by die museum aangebied.

Volgens Ken moes die museum oor die jare ’n alarmstelsel installeer weens die gereelde inbrake. “Hulle breek meestal in vir die koper wat hulle vir dwelms verkoop. Dis artefakte van onskatbare waarde wat ’n mens nie weer gaan kry nie.”

Daar is tans planne om ’n muur rondom die gebou op te rig.

Ken sê sowat 2 000 besoekers kom jaarliks na die museum en moedig die gemeenskap aan om hulle aan te hou ondersteun.

Toegang tot die museum kos R45 per persoon. Pensioenarisse betaal R35 en skoliere R15. Studente kry ook afslag.

Op die oog af het hierdie gesprek tussen twee kollegas geen waarde buiten die feit dat die een nou ’n sug van verligting kan slaak en die ander sy gordel vir die volgende klompie jare moet stywer trek.

Maar kyk ’n mens dieper, is dit eintlik presies hoe die lewe werk. Waar die een ou iets begin, is die ander een besig om klaar te maak.

In my omswerwinge maak ek gereeld kontak met mense wat swaar sug oor waar hulle nou in die lewe is en hoe onregverdig dit dan is dat sommige mense dit of dat het en hulle nie. Ek sien mense wat nie is waar hulle wil of moet wees nie, maar dan hulself blind staar teen die feit dat ander is waar hulle dink hulle veronderstel was om te wees. Jy sien, die lewe is ongelukkig nie so aanmekaar gesit dat almal op dieselfde plek wegspring en dan op presies dieselfde tyd op ’n gegewe tyd beland nie. Al spring almal ook saam weg, is dit nie ’n gegewe dat hulle op ’n bepaalde op dieselfde plek sal opeindig nie. ’n Mens sien dit gewoonlik by skoolreünies. Die een ou daag op met ’n spoggerige Duitse motor, terwyl die ander ou met die gemiddelde middelklas-motortjie aangery kom. “Ja, ek en die vrou het pas vir ons ’n ou strandhuisie aangeskaf.

Niks uitspattigs nie, net nagenoeg aan die see,” sal die een ou sê.

Die ander ou sal gemaak gelukkig kopknik en dink aan die dakplate van sy huis wat al skuins hang. Sy huis wat hy al klaar betaal het.

Ek lees die ander dag van ’n man wat op 61-jarige ouderdom ’n onderwyser geword het ná hy dwelmverslawing oorwin het en vir jare los werkies gedoen het voor hy sy ware roeping in die lewe gevind het. Oor die jare moes hierdie ou toekyk hoe mense uit sy portuurgroep aangaan en groot dinge in die lewe doen, terwyl hy verskeie afdraaie geneem het.

Beteken sy prestasie minder omdat hy later in die lewe eers sukses gesmaak het? ’n Slim mens het een keer gesê dat as jy jouself met iemand anders vergelyk, is jy besig om jou eie geluk te steel. Maar die beste aanhaling wat ek al gesien het, is die volgende: “Don’t compare your life to others. There’s no comparison between the sun and the moon. They shine when it’s their time.”

Ek weet nie wie dit gesê het nie, maar hoe waar is dit nie? Hoekom sal jy jou nou moeg maak deur jouself of jou omstandighede met ander te vergelyk?

As jy reeds veertig is en nog nie daardie graad voltooi het nie; dis nie te laat nie. Jy het nog nie jou rybewys nie?

Kry dit! Nie die groot huis wat jy in die vooruitsig gestel het nie? Geniet die een waarin jy woon.

As jy ’n jongmens is en een van jou vriende het vinniger werk en sukses as jy gekry, moet nie beangs raak nie. Die skrywer van die Harry Potter-boeke, J.K. Some areas are slums I was driving today for the first time in more than a year down Tienie Meyer Avenue behind the Bellville railway station, Bellville court and the farm market and it was shocking to see how people just make home next to the roads, under the bridge and next to the wall of the market.

What is going on in our beautiful clean towns?

This is not good and fair to all property and business owners, road users and all taxpayers.

Are certain Cape Town areas becoming slums and dump sites due to lack of law and order?

‘Soft targets’ get fines The letter published in the TygerBurger (“Hoekom hier kaartjies uitskryf?” 12/2) refers.

During the last couple of months, the same thing has been happening at the Dirkie Uys clinic and surrounds in

Goodwood.

Two traffic officers would also issue traffic fines around the clinic’s vicinity. People attending the clinic are mostly the poor and unemployed. But what is more alarming is that these traffic officers do not apply the same standards when vehicles drive in the wrong direction of the one-way street of MacDonald Road northbound between Voortrekker Road and Dingle Street, in clear view of them.

It is clear from the actions of these two officers and traffic services that they only target the downtrodden and destitute of society.

The City only issues traffic fines to so-called soft targets.

Apteek se diens by kliniek is treurig Baie dankie vir die brief in die TygerBurger oor die diens by die Bellville-kliniek (“Kliniek se diens gaan agteruit”, 5 Februarie).

Daar is ’n groot verbetering ten opsigte van die diens van die ontvangspersoneel en die briljante dokter.

Net jammer die apteekgedeelte in nog nie op peil nie.

Kan jy glo tussen ses mense verlê hulle ’n lêer en nie een weet waar dit is nie? Die pasiënt wat ure daar sit en wag, word daarvan beskuldig dat sy die lêer nie ingegee het nie. Nooit is dit hulle skuld nie. Daar word nie eens jammer gesê as hulle ure later die lêer by hulle kry nie.

Steeds kry ons nie al ons medikasie nie; dis altyd iemand anders se skuld. Ons is afhanklik van die medisyne en hulle verstaan nie die komplikasies as ons nie ons medikasie kry nie.

Sterkte aan al die pasiënte wat afhanklik is van klinieke reg oor ons pragtige land.

The ducks can be saved I am amazed that Zahid Badroodien, Mayco member for community services and health, was quoted in the article “Talle eende vrek” (TygerBurger, 19 February) as “investigating”, together with the City’s recreation and parks department, the cause of the duck deaths at our Sonstraal Dam. The duck deaths are nothing new and huge sums of money have been spent on these ridiculous “investigations” by CoCT. The cause is known and entirely preventable if CoCT did it’s job and enforced the bylaws around the dams.

Avian Botulism is caused by a combination of hot weather and fishermen leaving dead and dying fish in the dam. The dead fish wash up onto the exposed mud flats of the dam in hot weather, flies lay their eggs in the protein substrate (dead fish) and the cycle cannot happen without the dead fish and the fly maggots. These maggots take three days to hatch and are infested with the naturally occurring Botulism toxin.

The ducks eat the fly maggots and within a day the ducks become paralysed.

First the tails hang, then the legs become weak, then they cannot move and die within days of respiratory failure or drowning. It is an agonising death for the birds.

Not just ducks, also geese, indigenous Coots and other birds.

The ducks can easily be saved. Catch, take to vet or home, tube every hour or two with a 30ml syringe of diluted Darrows to clear the toxins.

Keep quiet and safe, no food.

Three days later the duck will have fully recovered and can be released.

These facts are widely known and have been discussed and acknowledged at endless public meetings with

City officials. If you see dead fish at the side of the dam, dump them into the bins.

Easy. No expensive “investigations” needed.

Waste recycling operation halted DESIRÉE RORKE @dezzierorke

T

he recycling operation at the Bellville South waste drop-off facility has been halted for now, due to a global downturn in the market for recycled material.

Mayco member for water and waste, Xanthea Limberg, confirmed it last week.

“Late last year, the contractor indicated they were facing challenges and intended to withdraw from the facility completely as they were unable to generate sufficient revenue from recycled materials to make the service sustainable,” says Limberg.

However, since then the contractor has indicated that they intend to resume opera-

tions, according to Limberg.

In the interim, the City will continue to accept sorted, clean recyclables at the facility, that would be transported to other sites for processing, she says.

“Recycling remains an important aspect of the City’s waste minimisation strategy and every effort is being made to ensure recycling services continue as far as possible despite significant challenges facing the recycling industry globally,” she says.

Lisa Parkes from the South African Plastics Recycling Organisation (Sapro), says the market is currently very tough for recycling contractors, due to several factors.

“A bad local economic climate, down time due to electricity load shedding and a short-

age of good quality material all play a role in the decline of the industry,” Parkes says.

In addition to this, the global recycling industry took a knock when China put a ban on waste imports in 2017.

“Instead of importing waste materials, Chinese companies now buy up all the good quality virgin material in South Africa for very cheap, leaving recyclers at a loss.”

“Recycling contractors also struggle to stay competitive in a market where virgin raw materials are being imported for very cheap,” she explains.

Residents disappointed A resident in Sonkring, Brackenfell, who does not want to be named, was somewhat

taken aback when he arrived at the facility two weeks ago, to find the operation fallen by the wayside.

“There were only normal skips for all the waste. The ‘green’ skips for my recyclables like paper, glass and plastic was nowhere to be seen, and all my waste was dumped in one skip.

“When I enquired about this a worker on site told me that all the waste will be taken to Vissershok landfill site to be dumped.

“This defeats the whole purpose of why recycling was introduced in the first place.

When the initiative was launched a few years ago, it was exciting and as responsible citizens we could do our bit for the planet.

It is very disappointing,” he said.

Cindy en Frankford het mekaar 13 jaar gelede by ’n krieketwedstryd vir blindes ontmoet.

Living life to the fullest KAILIN DANIELS @k10daniels Tiana-Leigh Smith (13) from Table View have battled against the odds after being diagnosed with a rare and life threatening lung disease soon after birth.

This led to the establishment of the Tiana-Leigh Lung Foundation, which helps with her medical costs, as well as that of other children with rare lung diseases. The foundation also helps to raise awareness of the disease.

Born on 20 July 2006, she was im-

mediately connected to an oxygen machine, after which an emergency open lung biopsy was performed. At 18 months old, Tiana was diagnosed with Wilms tumour, a childhood cancer of the kidney.

Speaking to TygerBurger, Tiana said that she always listens to music or speak to her mom when she feels overwhelmed.

“I try to never give up and to keep praying. I live by the motto “Dare to thrive - not just survive” and live life to the fullest,” she said.

In celebration of her 14th birthday in July, Tiana intends to raise

Tiana-Leigh and her mother, Alta, who started a foundation to help others suffering from the same disease.

funds for the foundation. She has a passion for music and is already fulfilling her dream of singing on stage.

“She is home schooled due to the risk of her health.

Tiana loves arts and crafts and has started art lessons, enabling her to continue and hopefully sell her own artwork in the near future. Another huge dream of Tiana is to become a model,” her mother, Alta Smith said.

Alta said that funds raised through the foundation helps with purchasing life-saving equipment, oxygen and outstanding medical bills for both Tiana and others.

“This means awareness campaigns, an enormous amount of fundraising and travelling. Due to the fact that our community has been, and is really pulling together for both Tiana and the foundation, we have decided to give back to the community,” Alta said.

With International Rare Disease Awareness Day celebrated on Friday 28 February, the foundation will hold a a fundraising and awareness drive.

Alta explained, “A percentage of the funds raised on the 28 February will be to start purchasing equipment as well as oxygen to help in the community. It will naturally belong to the foundation but it will be set aside and used to help those in our community. We also just want to thank each and every one of our sponsors for believing in the cause and for walking this journey with us and to Drifthood Café for the venue. Without you we would not have achieved much.”

Major League title secured NOORE NACERODIEN It was another bumper double header weekend for the Cape Town Softball Association, with Kuils River Cougars and Table View Tornadoes both obtaining at least one win out of their two weekend fixtures.

However, Westridge Yankees would go on to secure the Major League title after another maximum points haul over the weekend.

On Saturday 22 February they despatched with Belhar Dolphins (17-1) and beat Kuils River Cougars (23-1) on Sunday 23 February.

Elsewhere, the race for the Super League title heated up when Lavender Hill surprisingly dropped

points against Glenthorn A’s in their women’s Super League clash at the Turfhall Softball Stadium in Belthorn Estate on Saturday.

Lavender Hill’s closest rivals, Westridge Yankees, had another superb weekend beating Heideveld Yankees (17-0) and Glenthorn A’s (11-4) on Sunday.

After Glenthorn’s superb performance on Saturday, they came unstuck against Yankees on Sunday.

In the late game on Sunday, young Falcons pitcher Amy Minnies could not contain the Lavender Hill batters giving up nine hits.

Rhoda and Savage again shared the pitching duties for Lavender Hill and jointly gave up a mere 4 hits striking out 8 batters.

Former rugby players and administrators pre-unification are invited to the inauguration of the Western Province Rugby Past Players Association on Saturday 29 February at 11:00 at the Railway Mall at Newlands rugby stadium.

Two years ago the Western Province Rugby Union set an objective to establish an association for all provincial players pre-unification. Some of the objectives were: . To unite all past provincial players and officials that represented the union’s founding rugby bodies prior to the formation of the union in 1992, and to continue this legacy for current and future generations.

. To promote and foster the history, culture and legacy of rugby in the Western Province. . To recognise and acknowledge all past provincial players, administrators, officials, executive members and unions.

After the first meeting, a steering committee was appointed to draft a constitution for consideration by members in order to formalise the association.

The constitution has now been finalised and the association invites all past provincial players to attend the inauguration. The attire is provincial blazers or jacket and tie.

outh Africa’s blind cricket team recently completed their T20 and Oneday International (ODI) series against their New Zealand.

The five T20s and two ODIs took place at Bellville Cricket Club, Victoria Cricket Club in Kenwyn as well as the Vineyard Oval in Newlands.

South African coach Michael da Silva used this series to assess the strength of his squad in the build up to the T20 Blind Cricket World Cup in England next year.

His team went on to sweep both series, 5-0 and 2-0 respectively, winning the final ODI at Bellville Cricket club by 63 runs after dismissing New Zealand for 246, the first time a team was bowled out in the series.

Blind cricket includes both totally blind and partially sighted players in a team.

The sport is very similar to normal cricket, but has slight modifications to cater for the players’ lack of eyesight, such as an audible ball amongst other adaptations.
