WW2 MEDIC: SERVED IN EGYPT

Veteran (98) remembers F

or most of us tales of World War 2 (WW2) are confined to the history books. For a select few, however, the events of 80 years ago is an experience and memory that still lives on, both in their hearts and minds.

One such indivual is Edgemead resident William (Willie) van Schalkwyk (99), a surviving WW2 veteran. As a young man who lived at the time of the war, Willie felt that it was his patriotic duty to serve his country, says his stepson-in-law Chris Teale.

The senior citizen, Chris says, signed up as a soldier in 1940.

“The reason why he joined the South African Medical Corps was to help save lives,” Chris explains. He says most of Willie’s siblings also joined the South African Air Force (SAAF).

“Whilst he was in the then Union Defence Force, part of the British 8th Army, his brothers and sisters joined the SAAF.” Willie joined the army as a medic and served in Egypt in North Africa for three years at the 8th Army Base Camp Hospital.

Here he served during the battle of El Alamein and other frontline operations.

“He treated German, Italian and allied soldiers irrespective of race, belief and nationality.”

Willie remembers life in Egypt’s western desert very well and recalls that it was not pretty, Chris says.

“The soldiers had to dig trenches for three months after arrival using only picks and shovels.” While in the desert they were bombed almost daily by the aircraft from the German Luftwaffe and Italian Air Force.

“Willie himself also had to be hospitalised at the Alexandria camp for two weeks after contracting sand flea fever.”

After three years, their unit returned to South Africa. “On their way back to South Africa on a ship, they were attacked by a submarine,” tells Chris.

After his return in 1943 Willie served at the Military Hospital in Wynberg for the remainder of the war.

This was due to an injury to his left eardrum which meant he could not be deployed to Italy.

During his service Willie received several medals including the 1939 to 1945 Star, Africa Star, and Defence Medal. He also received the War Medal and the Af-

rica Service Medal.

Chris, a former curator at the South African Air Force Museum at Ysterplaat, says in August this year, Willie will be celebrating his 99th birthday.

There are, however, no big plans for this year’s celebration as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic.

“We will celebrate the big 100 next year,” says Chris whose own mother also served in the Royal Air Force during the war. His mother passed away a year ago at the age of 98.

“She refused to tell me of some of the work she did. That is how it was, our parents did not speak to the children about the war. And so with Willie, this is the first time he has really talked about it and it is a new experience for all of his family,” Chris says. According to Chris, these days Willie occupies himself with all sorts of entertainment. “He loves playing scrabble, watching sport, news and current affairs and watching movies on television. He is also writing his memoirs.”

Willie and his wife, Jean, have been married for 43 years and still live in their own home. The couple has three children of whom two had already passed away.

T

he disappearance of a child can have a severe and traumatising impact on a parent.

Earlier this year a two-month-old baby, Kwahlelo Tiwane, was abducted from his mother in Parow. It has been more than half a year, and the police have yet to find the minor.

Mariska Pienaar, a registered counselling psychologist and a lecturer in psychology at the University of the Western Cape, says the psychological impact of having a missing child is absolutely devastating, and can certainly result in depression and anxiety.

“Parents can experience conflicting feelings of hope and despair, on the one hand trying to maintain hope, on the other hand experiencing despair and fearing the worst.

“The uncertainty around the child’s whereabouts, well-being and whether the parents will ever be reunited with the child will be a constant preoccupation accompanied by intense dysphoric feelings,” explains Pienaar.

Another emotion that may arise for parents is guilt – whether rational and valid or not – it is quite common for such parents to blame themselves in some way or another for what had happened, adds Pienaar.

“Parents may suffer from insomnia and feel emotionally and physically drained.

“It may become very difficult to focus on anything other than the missing child, and daily tasks, including work, which may become affected.

Pienaar says parents of a missing child are also bound to feel a consuming sense of powerlessness in the face of the uncertainty about the child’s status, as well as an inability on their part to find the child. She says closure is something that will evade until the case is solved, which is a recipe for complicated bereavement. “Conflict may arise between the parents of a missing child, as two parents may often have different mechanisms of coping with such a situation.”

There are, however, a few mechanisms

parents can apply to help deal with the pain and stress.

“Parents of a missing child need to try to access as much social support as possible.

It is important to obtain such support from family and friends,” says Pienaar.

She says such parents need to communicate their needs to family and friends. “It may be necessary to utilise counselling or psychotherapy and see a psychiatrist for appropriate mental health support.”

Pienaar also says that it may be helpful to stay updated on the details of the police investigation. “Communication during such times is also essential.”

She says parents also need to be able to openly communicate with each other regarding their thoughts and feelings. “This is particularly important because two par-

Kwahlelo was abducted from his mother, a Khayelitsha resident, in Parow on Thursday 16 January.

Last week Sgt Noloyiso Rwexana, Western Cape police spokesperson, told TygerBurger there are no new developments in the case. She confirmed the child is still missing.

It was alleged that a woman who presented herself as a social worker approached the mother of the child a day before the abduction, requesting the child’s birth certificate and clinic card which the individual then copied. The person accompanied the mother and her children to Parow the following day where the child was allegedly abducted by the individual, the police said earlier.

Provincial minister of social development, Sharna Fernandes, appealed to the public to assist the police in providing information about the whereabouts of Kwahlelo. In a statement released earlier Fernandez said social workers can be identified by a Western Cape government name-tag, which should be worn at all times. Members of the public can also confirm their identity by calling their nearest local department of social development office or the police.

he corner of Plattekloof and Tygervalley Roads alongside the N7 freeway is home to a new shopping centre – Richmond Park.

The multibillion rand centre officially opened Richmond Corner, a prime corner spot in Atterbury’s new Richmond Park development on Thursday 23 July, boasting a variety of convenience stores.

The new convenience shopping centre was only four weeks away from opening to customers when the national lockdown to curb the spread of Covid-19 struck in March. Construction on Richmond Corner started in May 2019, and was virtually complete when the lockdown began.

Anchored by Pick n Pay, Woolworths Food and Clicks, the fully-let 6 500m² shopping centre will provide essential food, grocery, drive-through take-aways, and health and pharmacy retail, among other things.

Richmond Park is a multibillion Rand mixed-use development by major shareholders which include Atterbury, Old Mutual Properties, the Richmond Park Communal Property Association (CPA) as well

as Qubic 3 Dimensional Property, Bethel Property and Atlantis. Atterbury is rolling out the development of Richmond Park on behalf of the shareholders.

Various shoppers attended the opening on Thursday, admiring the location and shops. One of the shoppers, Michael Cloete, said the opening of the mall could not come at a better time.

“I live just around the corner and with Covid-19 and the curfew in place, visiting the closest shopping mall is important. I cannot be happier about the opening of Richmond Corner. It makes things so much easier,” the enthusiastic Cloete said.

Gerrit van den Berg, who heads Atterbury’s Western Cape operations, said that Richmond Corner will serve to uplift the local community of Richmond and provide essential shopping for everyone working in the park - those in its immediate neighbourhood and commuters living in nearby Bothasig, Richwood, Burgundy, Plattekloof and surrounds. Moms and babies blessed with clothing donation: The Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC) project at Tygerberg Hospital received a heartfelt donation of clothes and baby blankets recently, made possible by retail clothing giant, Exact.

Infant clothing was donated to the new moms and their newborn babies, as well as masks for the nurses and doctors on the frontline. The KMC project was in desperate need of the public’s help for donations of toiletries and clothing, says Candice Jansen, spokesperson for the Tygerberg Hospital Children’s Trust. “KMC is a method of caring for a baby where the mother nurses the infant on her bare chest. The skin-to-skin contact between mothers and babies is encouraged with infants who are born with a low birth weight.” At the handover was from left Candice Jansen, Emma O’ Connor, Waseema Sukhadia, Nicole de Sousa and Yolanda Smith.

Klublede het 310 kg hondekos ingesamel vir die sowat 70 honde wat tans daar gehuisves word.

“As diereliefhebbers lê die saak ons na aan die hart.

“Die idee het gespruit uit die droogtehulpskenkings wat die klub in die Kerstyd aan boere in Loeriesfontein gemaak het,” sê Hannes Rheeder, voorsitter van die klub.

Tracy Richardson, woordvoerder van die dierewelsynorganisasie, sê hulle gebruik tans sowat 40 kg hondekos per dag.

“Sedert die begin van die grendeltyd het ons ’n groot toename beleef in mense wat hul troeteldiere weggee.

“Mense daag gereeld by ons hekke op met honde waarna hulle weens ’n geldtekort nie meer kan omsien nie,” sê sy.

So ook het baie van die organisasie se borge opgedroog.

“Nes baie ander ondernemings beleef ons gereelde weldoeners ook ’n baie moeilike tyd.

“Elke bietjie hulp wat ons kry, gaan om ons diere vir nog ’n maand te onderhou.”

Die Bothasig-polisie het op Vrydag 24 Julie vyf verdagtes in hegtenis geneem nadat ’n vermoedelik gesteelde motorfiets in hul besit gekry is.

Volgens ao. Jacques Mostert, polisiewoordvoerder, is die groep Vrydag ná 21:00 in ’n padversperring voorgekeer en is hul voertuig deursoek. Dit was toe reeds ná die aandklok. Die groep is glo twee ure later weer in die gebied opgemerk.

Mostert sê ao. Donovan Smit en Leon Streicher van die Bothasig-polisie het die voertuig weer voorgekeer. “ ’n Motorfiets is agter in die voertuig opgemerk wat nie vroeër die aand in hul besit was nie.”

Mostert sê daar is die afgelope tyd verskeie motorfietse deur diewe geteiken.

“Een van die insittendes het aangedui dat hy die eienaar van die motorfiets is, maar het geen dokumentasie daarvoor gehad om dit te bewys nie. Ons beamptes het onraad vermoed toe hulle ook ingelig is waar die motorfiets opgelaai is,” sê Mostert. Die adres word glo dikwels deur die polisie besoek.

Hy sê daar is later vasgestel dat die motorfiets in 2017 in Grassy Park as gesteel aangemeld is.

Die verdagtes, tussen 26 en 43 jaar oud, is in hegtenis geneem en word aangekla van die besit van vermoedelik gesteelde goedere, sowel as diefstal.

wo men were arrested by provincial police in Monte Vista after finding abalone in their possession last week.

The bust took place near a service station in the area. It is alleged the abalone was discovered in the back of a car’s boot.

Several residents wrote on social media they could hear shots being fired. There was speculation that a robbery had taken place, and also that a hijacking occurred, but this was denied by Sgt Noloyiso Rwexana, provincial police spokesperson.

“No armed robbery was reported, however, the police did arrest two men in their 30s for being in possession of abalone,” Rwexana says.

“A shot was fired by a suspect who fled the scene.”

Rwexana adds that no one was injured.

She says the value of the abalone is yet to be determined.

The suspects will be charged with the illegal possession of abalone.

In May last year abalone worth R1.3 million were found at a house in Monte Vista.

Charity locked down How you can help As the Covid-19 crisis continues and many people are struggling to make ends meet, non-profit organisations (NPOs) and non-government organisations (NGOs) are trying to provide support to those that need it most.

South African carriers lined up in German Cameroon in 1914.

Help give info on WW1 soldiers Do you have a black or coloured ancestor who served during World War One? A large-scale campaign, which was launched two weeks ago, is hoping to “fill in the missing pieces of these men’s lives who until now have not received any recognition for their sacrifice by name”.

The Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) has identified more than 1 600 members of the South African labour units.

Over the course of the war, thousands of black South Africans enlisted for non-combatant duties serving in various labour units including the Cape Coloured Labour Regiment, Cape Auxiliary Horse Transport, the Military Labour Bureau and the Military Labour Corps.

The CWGC has released a set of names of specific people they need help in identifying.

Liz Woodfield, CWGC director of information and communications, says more than a century after the war ended, not all the names of those lost from the ranks of the labour units have been recorded in remembrance.

“We are looking at changing that, so that they can be honoured by name and their stories told.”

Wildlife park’s funds running out NETTALIE VILJOEN At the beginning of this year, things were looking up for the World of Birds Wildlife Sanctuary & Monkey Park in Hout Bay. After years of tottering on the brink of bankruptcy, the park had finally fought its way back.

And then Covid-19 happened.

Hendrik Louw, the manager and coowner of World of Birds, explains that the park faced closure a few years ago after feeling the impact of an avian flu outbreak in 2017 and the water crisis in 2018. “We owed the bank nearly R1 million. Luckily, Astral, a poultry and feed company, came in about two years ago and assisted us with animal feed as well as the sinking of a borehole.”

With Astral covering roughly R100 000 of the park’s R170 000 monthly food bill, combined with having had a good season last year, the park was able to recover.

“We were in a position where we were saying, ‘wow, this is the first time in many years where we feel secure for the next two years’,” says Louw.

That all changed when the national lockdown began in March. With no entry-tickets being sold, the park was forced to use whatever funds it had accumulated in the bank to cover its expenses. Under normal circumstances, this would be R750 000 a month. Louw says changes, including substantial wage cuts, were made immediately to reduce costs to R500 000. Fast forward three months and the park’s bank balance now stands at approximately R600 000 – enough to carry the park for one more month.

Ajax memories fond for Isaacs W

inning three trophies in one season (2018/’19) with the u.18 team of the amateur soccer club, Hout Bay Community United, and seeing the smiles on the faces of the players and the greater community was the cherry on Dominic Isaacs’ coaching career.

The current coach of Cape Umoya in the GladAfrica Championship (national first division), Isaacs started his professional career as a soccer player at Ajax Cape Town in Parow, where he also spent the majority of his professional playing career.

He also had stints in the Premier Soccer League (PSL) at Kaizer Chiefs and Bloemfontein Celtic.

“If I look back on my soccer career I have no regrets as I believe everything happens for a reason. I am thankful for my health, without it I would not have been able to achieve what I did for so long. Soccer has also allowed me to travel and to experience different cultures and ways of life and I was able to visit six of the seven conti-

nents,” he says.

Isaacs started his soccer career at Parkhurst Ambassadors in Mitchell’s Plain.

At the age of 17 he started playing for Ajax and turned professional.

“I was at Ajax for (a total of) 10 years (2000 - 2008 and 2013 - 2015), Kaizer Chiefs for four (2008 - 2012), and a year at Bloemfontein Celtic (2012 - 2013). I finished my playing career at Ajax in 2015. After I hung up my boots I focused on coaching and that is how I landed in Hout Bay. In my playing days a lot of players influenced my career, but I prefer not to mention names, as there are too many,” he says.

“I was privileged enough to represent my country as an u.17, u.20 and u.23 player. Other clubs, besides Parkhurst, that I played for in my youth career were Sea Point Swifts in Bonteheuwel and School of Excellence in Johannesburg,” Isaacs says.

While at Ajax, he was part of that group of players that had to play second fiddle in the PSL and had to agonisingly surrender the trophy

on goal difference to Orlando Pirates in 2011.

“It never feels good to get second place, especially after all the hard work and commitment you put in,” he says.

Isaacs believes it is very important for former players to plough back into their communities, but with limited facilities available, he knows it can be challenging.

“I learned many different things from each of the coaches at the different PSL clubs, some learnings I will always carry with me. To relax I listen to music, learn and research history and surround myself with people I can learn from. You know, we also had fun while playing. I can recall in 2002 at Ajax after every home win, we (David Kannemeyer, Muneeb Josephs, Shaun Oliver, Maya Jansen, Shaun Permall and I) would empty the dustbins and make it a gummy (drum) and sing Klopse songs for up to two hours in the cloak room until the kitmaster, Albert Hendricks, would shout at us to get done. Really special times,” he reminisces.
