Bothsaig police visits primary school

Millions invested in libraries RICHARD ROBERTS @richardjohn_rj

Bothasig police visited Wolraad Woltemade Primary School recently as part of Youth Month celebrations. Warrant Officer Jacques Mostert (pictured) conducted a safety talk with the Grade 1 class at the school. The talk included how police officers can be identified, safety hints for the school holidays and what to do when they are snatched. He also explained that the police do not lock-up naughty children, only criminals. Some of the children had their fingerprints taken on forms supplied by the Pink Ladies organisation, while Mostert explained to them how unique and special they are. Here Anika Wentzel (7) from Bothasig are having her fingerprints taken.

he City of Cape Town has made just more than R40 million available towards libraries across the peninsula for upgrades at several buildings, resources and access to services and books. A formal announcement was made on Thursday last week at the Edgemead Library where mayor Dan Plato addressed visitors. Plato was joined by Zahid Badroodien, Mayco member for community services and health, ward 5 councillor, Helen Carstens and Elzana Dlomo, acting principal librarian at Edgemead Library. The money, Plato says, forms part of the City’s budgetary cycle (or new financial year) and kicks in this month. “There is still a need for libraries,” Plato told TygerBurger outside Edgemead Library. He adds: “Many of the poverty-stricken communities cannot afford a computer. They come to the library to make use of the computers here for research purposes.” He feels young people need to be computer literate and know how to use modern technology. A library is also a place where the public can access the City’s online portal, he says. Here learners and students can also make use of SmartCape, a service which provides free WiFi around Cape Town, for their studies and research. “It all starts here for many children.” Plato says apart from the books and computers, he is also grateful to see senior citizens make use of the Edgemead Library’s fa-

cilities. “Libraries serve as a hub where they can get together. I would like other people in other communities to do exactly the same.” Badroodien says he too thinks library’s play a vital role in society. “Libraries are not just a place where you can go and take out a book, but there are also markets held at some of them, there are group meetings here and people accessing our digital space. “Libraries are meeting spaces, innovation spaces and dreaming spaces for our young people. “It is very important for me as a Mayco member in charge of libraries to consider how do we bring in more support into this space – it really is a central safe space in many communities,” Badroodien says. Carstens says she is also happy with City’s substantial investment. “I think libraries deliver a great service to a community. “Edgemead Library has been here for 25 years. Year-on-year the membership increases and the amounts of books taken out increase. “I believe the library plays a very important role, even in schools. Not even Google can replace a library, that is how important they are,” Carstens concludes. During his visit last week to Edgemead Library, Plato made use of the opportunity to buy miniature plants and honey for tea at his office. He says it is important not just to admire the items on sale at libraries, but to show one’s support. According to the City, more than 300 000 patrons use libraries. In April the City opened the new R42 million Dunoon Library.
