Dangerous new drug hits SA CARINA ROUX

A

t a recent crime awareness day in Richwood, Lieutenant Colonel Patrick Jacobs, the station commander of Bothasig police, touched on the “zombie drug” flakka, which recently surfaced in South Africa for the first time.

This synthetic drug, which has been reported to be ten times more powerful than cocaine, is a huge problem in America. The devastating effects it can have, as seen in video footage shown by Jacobs, had the audience in shock. In one scene a man runs across a highway before diving head-first into the windscreen of a car.

A Nigerian drug dealer was arrested earlier this month after three men suffered adverse effects when their drinks were allegedly spiked with flakka in a pub in Pinetown in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN).

In a television interview, Sam Pillay, the director of the Anti-Drug Forum in KZN, said two of the men fell into a coma and the other man’s heart stopped, but “he was brought back to life”.

Pillay said it was confirmed that the drug involved was flakka, and it took more than 48 hours before the men could relate what was happening to them and five days to get the drug out of their systems.

The National Institute for Drug Abuse

(Nida) in the US describes flakka as a dangerous synthetic cathinone drug called alpha-PVP. It is similar to another synthetic cathinone drug called “bath salts” which was banned in 2012. It comes in the form of a white or pink crystal that can be eaten, snorted, injected or vapourised.

According to Nida, vaporising, which sends the drug rapidly Flakka into the bloodstream, may make it easy to overdose. The drug can cause “excited delirium” involving hyperstimulation, paranoia and hallucinations that can lead to violent aggression and selfinjury.

According to Karen Griesel, a social worker at a substance abuse treatment centre in Gauteng, the substance is packaged inconspicuously in plastic bags or vials labelled “not for human consumption”. “You can buy it online or off the street.”

Griesel says it has become popular because it simulates the effects of cocaine and methamphetamines (other so-called “up-

pers”) and it’s cheaper. Initially it gives the user a sense of euphoria, but continued use leads to delirium. Hallucinations, paranoia and “super human” strength have also been reported. Overdose can lead to psychosis, panic attacks, violence and death by suicide or heart attack. Flakka raises the body temperature and blood pressure, which can lead to kidney and heart failure.

Symptoms of use include extreme agitation, jerking muscle movements, delirious thoughts and paranoia.

Local police have not confirmed any cases of the drug in the Western Cape to date.

CARINA ROUX We have a Domestic Violence Act in South Africa because this is a problem.

This is according to Warrant Officer Jacques Mostert of the Bothasig police who spoke at a recent public meeting. He explained the act and told those present how it can be used effectively.

Mostert reminded the audience that this issue is not limited to 16 days of the year (referring to the annual 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children which starts this Saturday, 25 November).

He also added that men can also be on the receiving end of domestic violence.

Domestic violence can include physical or sexual abuse, emotional or verbal abuse, financial abuse, intimidation, harassment or stalking, damage to property or any other abusive or criminal behaviour.

The important factor to make it a contravention in terms of the law is that there is some relationship between parties, said Mostert. Domestic relationships include people who are or were married, who live or have lived together in a relationship, parents or people with parental responsibilities, family members, people who are or were in a romantic or sexual relationship, and people who share or have shared a home.

Mostert explained that people who are in need of help often do not lay charges be-

cause the perpetrator might threaten them with lifestyle changes. “They might say, ‘remember that if you lay charges the children will have to go to a different school or we will not be able to go on holiday anymore’.

“So now the abused person starts taking stock. They might think, ‘okay, he hits me only once a month and after that there’s the ‘honeymoon phase’ where he smothers me with gifts because he feels sorry’. So people take it because of financial dependence and for the ‘sake of their children’.”

This can be circumvented, said Mostert.

Victims of domestic violence can apply for a protection order against the other party.

This can be done at the Domestic Violence Court at the magistrate’s court closest to where the complainant works or lives or where the respondent (abuser) works or lives. The officer of the Domestic Violence Court will ask for an affidavit (a statement under oath). Mostert said that when giving an affidavit, one must be specific, because the magistrate will use what is reported in the affidavit to stipulate which actions the perpetrator must refrain from doing.

This document (interim protection order) will come to the closest police station and the police will then serve it on the perpetrator. The application for an interim protection order may be brought at any time of day or night and serves to provide immediate protection from abuse.

ment and it is very important that the applicant be in court otherwise the court will not take it seriously, said Mostert.

“The respondent can go if they want to, but what would probably happen if they are not there is that a protection order will be issued.” No attendance constitutes contempt of court. At this stage the magistrate can add or remove stipulations from the protection order before making it final. If the respondent has threatened to harm the complainant, an order will be made to confiscate any firearms they may own.

An application for emergency monetary relief can be brought to the court if there are medical expenses or alternative accommodation costs as a direct result of the abuse.

The court will issue a suspended warrant of arrest for the respondent and, should they breach the stipulations of the protection order, they could be arrested immediately.

They will then face criminal charges.

Mostert said the “bad news” is that once a protection order has been issued, the only way to remove it is upon death or if the applicant requests that it be set aside. The final decision will, however, be at the magistrate’s discretion. If it is not set aside and the perpetrator offends again even after 20 years, the victim can still enforce the protection order.

Mostert said there are some safe houses available for women who have suffered domestic violence.

“Toe ek my laaste pakkie op Dinsdag 14 November gaan afhaal, moet ek hoor dat ek nou R24,80 as hanteringsfooi moet betaal.

“Die poskantoor het nou besluit om geld te begin vra vir die hantering van die pakkies, aangesien dit nou so groot geraak het,” sê hy. Volgens hom het een van die poskantoor se werknemers so vier maande gelede aan hom gemeld dat hulle duisende van die pakkies ontvang – tot sowat 100 per dag.

According to a media statement released by SACAA in February, a review of the South African Aircraft Register over a 12-month period showed a dramatic increase in the number of registered drones, from 216 in January last year to 465 in January this year. The number of remote pilots’ licences issued rose from 33 to 368 in the same time period.

The problem with this increasing popularity and more affordable technology, says Simon Segwabe, executive of aviation safety operations at the SACAA, is that “some owners may use these aircraft in a manner that contravenes civil aviation regula-

tions and other laws. The main concern for regulators such as the SACAA is the increasing number of unregistered and unapproved RPAS operations that are taking to the skies illegally and are being potentially operated by unlicensed individuals,” says Segwabe.

He says the increasing number of reported incidents of RPAS flying into other people’s properties without permission, or following individuals around, is of concern. “We urge RPAS owners and operators to respect the privacy of others.”

RPAS operators who fail to adhere to civil aviation regulations could receive a 10-year prison sentence or a fine of R50 000, or both. People using RPAS in an irresponsible manner may also face legal liability for breaking laws enforceable by other government agencies.

xcitement and of course the thrill of anticipation are building up among the country’s needy youngsters as the time for the annual Toy Run draws nearer. This is South Africa’s biggest motorcycle ride with thousands of bikers expected to participate in events in all the major cities, due to take place this Sunday (26 November).

The Cape’s Toy Run begins when a huge field of motorcycles, a large proportion of them carrying a passenger charged with taking care of the gifts, sets off from either GrandWest in the northern suburbs, or the Grand Parade in the City centre.

The GrandWest run starts at 10:30 and involves a ride of 22.7km. Since the riders setting off from the Grand Parade will probably have to contend with more traffic, they are due to start their 19.3km journey a half

hour earlier at 10:00. Bikers are urged to adhere to the 60km/h speed limit and to refrain from overtaking during the run.

The two groups are expected to arrive at the Killarney International Raceway, where the function is being held, at about the same time. Once there, the toys will be unloaded into the Toy Run trucks parked in the pit area, for eventual distribution to economically challenged homes, orphanages, hospitals, places of safety and needy communities.

An interesting coincidence sees the Toy Run, which is now in its 35th year, switching its finish to Killarney for the first time.

Steeped in tradition and local culture, the motorsport centre is exactly double that age and is currently celebrating its 70th anniversary.

Once the toys have been dropped off – and you don’t have to be a rider or passenger for this – everyone is invited to the main event arena where a variety of entertainment will be available to everyone. The arena admission fee is R30, with children under 14 admitted free of charge.

This area includes the clubhouse with its restaurant, bar and children’s playground.

Renew your vehicle licence ahead of rush T

he City of Cape Town has urged residents to apply for their licence discs in good time to avoid the expected long queues. In a statement, the City said they are bracing themselves for the annual influx of residents applying for their motor vehicle licence renewals ahead of the December holidays.

Johan van der Merwe, the City’s Mayco member for finance, says although they have implemented measures to deal with the high volume, long queues are still expected as people often visit the licensing offices during their December holidays.

Residents can avoid these queues by renewing their licence discs online, and the City encourages them to go this route if possible.

An online licence application takes approximately 14 days from the date of application to receiving it in the post, so residents must bear this in mind. The City assures residents that the online registration portal is up to date and will remain so. People are reminded to take along their proof of address

when renewing their motor vehicle licences. This must be done annually as per national government requirements. It is very important to have all of the required documentation to prevent any additional delays.

Van der Merwe says the City has done everything possible to increase staff in the lead-up to and during December, both at the walk-in centres and for the online service, but the demand remains quite high as many residents scramble to get their vehicle licences ahead of the big holiday days to avoid fines during their travels. “We have increased the number of terminals at the motor vehicle registration offices and staff will again be rotated to the busy offices.”

Card payment facilities are now available at the motor vehicle licence offices, including the Cape Town Civic Centre.

A tiny baby turns into a huge miracle

Upon seeing my newborn baby for the first time, most other people reacted with shock and then sympathy. My baby was born at 30 weeks, weighing only 1kg.

If you’re unfamiliar with the world of babies ... that’s tiny! A woman carries a baby to full term, which is 40 weeks (sometimes longer, sometimes shorter). A child is considered “premature” when it is born before 37 weeks. Many mothers would have a minor heart attack if their baby was born weighing less than 2.5kg.

My own reaction upon seeing my daughter was an overwhelming feeling of confusion and anxiety.

In the case of my daughter’s birth there were no movie-like moments of me pushing my baby out while yelling at my husband. The grandparents weren’t huddled outside excitedly waiting for news. I wasn’t patting away sweat while looking lovingly at my bundle of joy.

Instead I woke up in ICU and was told my baby had been born the previous evening. She was We couldn’t alive for more than 10 hours before I stroke our girl. saw her for the time.

At 28 weeks we travelled dings. to South Africa for a last hurrah before our daughter was meant to make her appearance in London. But life had other plans. One morning I woke up feeling terrible. And three days later she was born. Turns out I was suffering from a condition called pre-eclampsia, which is high blood pressure induced by pregnancy. Things escalated quite quickly and by day three my pre-eclampsia had turned into eclampsia when I suffered a seizure in hospital. I’m told this quite rare in private health care. Lucky me.

Having a premature baby meant we were introduced the world of NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit or “Nico”).

In a way it felt a bit like a sterile spaceship. A lot of machines and people in uniforms, with everyone sterilising their hands before entering and leaving.

Nobody except parents allowed inside.

We couldn’t stroke our girl. She was born so prematurely she had no nerve endings. Like ET, we could only point and touch her gently. She had jaundice almost immediately and developed a cold quite quickly (which in a baby that size becomes a catastrophe). As a baby will only be discharged from NICU upon reaching a certain weight and age, we lived in terms of millilitres and grams.

“She drank 20ml today and picked up 15g!” we exclaimed excitedly to our confused friends.

But with the challenges there were joys. NICU was a soft landing for the trauma. Here my confused mind could slowly come to grips with having a child.

The nurses were patient with our absolute inexperience. We went home knowing somebody was looking out for her constantly. The staff were our cheerleaders and our baby’s biggest fans. Firm kindness was the motto of my child’s first home. Here we were taught to bathe her, feed her, and get to grips with her emaciated body and the unique challenges of caring for a baby of that size.

My daughter would spend 47 days in NICU. She was discharged before her actual due date (we joked about her being “minus five days old”).

Today, a few days after “World Prematurity Day”, she is a healthy 15 months and the light of our lives. One day I’ll tell her about the miracle of her being alive.

I’ll speak of her fighting spirit and I’ll be sure to tell her of the nurses and staff that got her to where she is today. – Nielen de Klerk

Why are so many robberies repeated without the perpetrators ever being caught?

If you can give a description of the robber, inevitably no identikit photo file exists with the police.

Why are robberies in the

same complex – five in three years – not solved?

If you phone the police when a robber enters your bedroom on the first floor, how can they arrive only 20 to 30 minutes after you phoned them urgently?

Well, I am a nearly 80 years old and European; I have lived in this country for 50 years and have always supported this country.

As co-founder of the world’s biggest chemical company in the world, I worked in Cape Town for six years before being called back to Germany.

I then returned to make South Africa my permanent home.

When I speak to other people who have also been robbed in their “castle”, the sentiment is often: “We appreciate that we are still alive and unharmed!”

This is definitely the wrong attitude in a civilised country.

Perhaps all those people – single or families – should refuse to pay tax, after having lost valuable things.

This country’s security apparatus for its citizens is hardly in existence.

Also, the number of protests and demonstrations with no proper basis are taking away our police force to keep order.

They have no respect for time, and security is left for “John Citizen”.

‘Doctor/Prophet’ Allwright is all wrong about facts Re. “Setting the facts straight,”15/11: Caryn Allwright does not appear to be an eye-witness to the alleged incident despite trying to sound like one, hence her “setting the facts

straight” comments would not hold up in a kangaroo court.

Clearly she is either a doctor, prophet or clairvoyant as she seems to have such an accurate account of the entire incident!

Her medical diagnosis of “serious” is quite astounding and requires no further comment. I am less concerned with her prophecy and medical expertise than with the misconduct and harassment by Law Enforcement who failed to follow correct procedures (this is an ongoing and separate matter). My statement was made to separate legal counsels and if untrue would be tantamount to perjury.

No person should be subject to any dog bite; however, we live in a society where many people use certain events to illegally claim compensation against a vulnerable public.

The issue with neighbourhood dogs will not go away until the City and ward councillors create effective policy and provide proper dog parks. I commend the writer, Carina Roux, on her professionalism by interviewing and contacting all parties before publishing.

ooibos tea could reduce the risk of “type 3” diabetes – a precursor to Alzheimer’s disease November is World Diabetes Awareness Month, which focuses on raising awareness of the signs, symptoms and prevention of this condition.

According to a statement released by the SA Rooibos Council, researchers at Warren Alpert Medical School at Brown University in the USA found a link between a relatively new form of diabetes, known as type 3 diabetes, and Alzheimer’s disease.

As with all types of dementia, Alzheimer’s is caused by a combination of genetic, lifestyle and environmental factors that affect the health of the brain over a period of time, but now scientists have discovered a strong connection between the disease and insulin resistance in the brain – also referred to as type 3 diabetes.

Prof. Christo Muller, chief specialist scientist at the SA Medical Research Council (SAMRC), describes Alzheimer’s as a neurodegenerative disease in the elderly, which involves the progressive loss of nerve cells and connections.

“Types 1 and 2 diabetes are typically characterised by hyperglycaemia (high blood sugar) whereas type 3 diabetes is a more complex disease that has its origin in the central nervous system.

“Many type 2 diabetics have deposits of a protein called beta-amyloid in their pancreas, which is similar to the protein deposits found in the brain tissue of Alzheimer’s sufferers. According to research published in the World Journal of Diabetes, this increases type 2 diabetics’ risk of Alzheimer’s disease by between 50% and 65%,” says Muller.

Current research suggests that rooibos has the potential to delay or prevent the onset and progression of type 2 diabetes; however, its effect on the associated risk of type 3 diabetes and Alzheimer’s disease still needs to be elucidated.

Muller says that phenolic compounds present in rooibos enhance the body’s antioxidant defences, helping to fight a variety of oxidative stress-induced conditions.

“The brain is one of the organs most sensitive to oxidative stress, and long-term exposure to increased levels of free radicals causes damage to neural cells. Dietary antioxidants, such as those found in rooibos, could thus protect vulnerable neurons against the impact of oxidative by-products.

“Rooibos tea is a rich source of dietary antioxidants, including flavonoids such as dihydrochalcone glucoside, aspalathin and nothofagin. Aspalathin, in particular, helps to modify hormones in the body and reduces the output of adrenal hormones specifically, thus reducing stress and helping to inhibit metabolic disorders,’’ says Muller.

Their research at the SAMRC found that an aspalathin-enriched extract of green rooibos was particularly effective at lowering raised blood glucose levels in diabetic rats.

“Rooibos, in conjunction with a healthy lifestyle, is certain to benefit everyone,” concludes Muller.

Sy is die enigste persoon ter wêreld met Downsindroom wat ’n onderwysdiploma in kleutersorg het, en geen aanpassings is tydens haar opleiding vir haar gemaak nie “Die boek gaan ook nie daaroor om nie vir jouself jammer te kry nie. Dit gaan daaroor dat mens nooit moed moet opgee nie. Dit gaan oor drome wat elkeen moet hê, al moet jy harder as ander werk en meer bid om die drome waar te maak,” het sy gesê.

“Ek woon my lewe lank in Bloemfontein en wonderlike dinge het al met my gebeur sedert ek die internasionale ambassadeur vir alle mense met Downsindroom geword het. Eintlik is ek net ’n doodgewone mens met ’n ekstra chromosoom en dit maak my bietjie stadiger. Dis al wat ek ken en eintlik is ek heeltemal oukei om ek te wees.

“Ek kla net soms wanneer my ma so vinnig loop dat dit lyk asof sy vir my wegloop.

“Ek kan ook nie lank staan nie, sukkel met skoene en is maar lomp. Die instrukteurs by die gimnasium probeer my hiermee help.

“Eintlik vat ek langer met alles wat ek doen, maar ons almal het mos maar dinge wat ons anders wil hê in ons lewens,” het sy gesê.

Dit is vir haar nog ongelooflik om haar eie boek in boekwinkels uitgestal te sien.

“Wanneer mense my boek koop, voel dit net so onwerklik en kan ek dit nie glo nie.

delik hoe my pad geloop het, omdat die Here my baie seën. Ek wou my eie storie vertel, want mense praat so maklik vir ander en ek wou oor myself skryf,” het Shéri gesê.

Sy word gereeld gevra waaroor die boek gaan en wat sy nou eintlik daarmee wil bereik.

“Ek verduidelik dit graag sodat mense kan verstaan. Dis nie ’n boek net vir mense met Downsindroom nie. Dis ’n boek wat handel oor die lewe binne ’n dop van andersheid.

“Dis ’n boek van vasbyt, harde werk en die verwerking van die uitdagings van ’n lewe waar mens nie regtig inpas nie – tot die aanvaarding en beste maak van jou omstandighede.

“Dis ’n positiewe boek, sonder issues en hangups. Dis ’n boek van verlies en soms seer, maar met die sterk boodskap van hoop, indien jy regtig die Here se genade en liefde in jou lewe toelaat. Met die boek omarm ons andersheid en probeer hoop gee vir ander wat gemarginaliseer voel,” het sy gesê.

Sy wil ook via hierdie artikel die wanpersepsie regstel dat sy aan Downsindroom ly.

“Ek het ’n ekstra chromosoom en hét Downsindroom. Dis nie ’n siekte nie en mense met Downsindroom ly nie meer soos in die verlede toe hulle weggesteek of in ’n inrigting geplaas is nie. Dis net wanneer aborsies gedoen word, dat hulle ly,” het sy gesê.

Volgens haar ma, Susette, was en is haar lewe anders.

“Shéri is en sal altyd stadiger wees, al verstom sy my daagliks. Haar onderwys- en werkloopbaan was vol struikelblokke, waarvan die lesers in die boek kan lees. Maar die lag was baie, veel meer as die hartseer,” het sy gesê.

“Hulle kan ook nie vir mekaar sorg nie en hulle het nie seksuele gevoelens vir mekaar nie; dus is trou nie ter sprake nie.

“Beide geniet die verhouding soos dit is.

Shéri se behoefte is om normaal te wees en dan te trou, soos haar sussies gedoen het. Sy weet egter dit kan nie gebeur nie en wanneer sy haar stories op televisie kyk, is Gustav nie gewild as hy haar bel nie,” vertel Susette laggend. Haar boodskap by bekendstellings van haar boek is dat jy net die beste jy kan wees, sonder om jou met ander te vergelyk.

Volgens haar wil sy huil as mense hulle as “hemelkinders” beskryf, wat net uitverkore mammas kry, want die mense weet nie van beter nie. Hulle is glo liefdevol en dierbaar, maar volgens haar is hierdie idee baie verouder, al is dit goed bedoel.

“Ek is net ’n kind wat stadiger ontwikkel.

Alle kinders wat slaap, lyk vir my soos hemelkinders. Hulle is verseker nie almal liefdevol nie en kan maar lekker stout en vol streke wees soos enige ander kind. Dankie tog hulle is net gewone kinders wat hul grense soms toets,” het Shéri gesê.

“Shéri is pragtig en vol liefde, soos vele ander kinders ook. Hulle pas nie almal in dieselfde boksie nie en moet nie met mekaar vergelyk word nie. Hulle verskil nes normale kinders van mekaar verskil, tog is daar baie normale en Downsindroom-kinders wat liefdevol en dierbaar is.

“Dis verseker nie spesiale mammas wat sulke kinders kry nie. Enige mamma wat ’n kindjie grootmaak met liefde en ondersteuning, is spesiaal, so ook mammas met kinders met Downsindroom.

“Ek was maar kwaai met haar en het duidelike grense gestel. Dit het Shéri gehelp om

binne die grense van dissipline te funksioneer,” het Susette gesê.

Drama is Shéri se heel lekkerste stokperdjie. “Sy het al twee keer in Binnelanders op televisie verskyn en ook in twee verskillende verhoogproduksies op die Vrystaat-Kunstefees gespeel. Die kunstefees is soortgelyk aan die KKNK. Sy het al meer as 500 keer nasionaal en internasionaal as gasspreker opgetree. Haar boodskap is ’n boodskap van hoop, nes haar boek,” het haar ma gesê. Volgens die mede-skrywer, Colleen Naudé, kry hulle baie goeie terugvoering oor die boek.

Op ’n vraag watter mense ’n invloed op haar lewe gehad het, het Susette geantwoord dat daar ontsettend baie mense is wat werktuie in die hand van die Here is.

“Om een of twee uit te sonder sou verkeerd wees. Sy dra haar boek aan haar ouma, Sarie Horak, en pa, Jerry, op, wat albei oorlede is en nooit al die lekker van haar suksesse saam met haar kon beleef nie. Albei het ’n ongelooflike rol in haar lewe gespeel.”

Op ’n vraag wat nog op haar wenslysie is, het Shéri gesê dat sy graag weer in Binnelanders wil speel.

“Die Here gee gewoonlik veel meer as wat sy oor droom, maar as jy haar vra is daar net een antwoord: om weer eendag in Binnelanders te speel. Volgende jaar is sy genooi om in China en Skotland te gaan praat. NieuSeeland het ook ’n uitnodiging gestuur en sy gaan ook in Namibië praat. Sy is ook genooi om volgende maand by die Oxford-universiteit by ’n onderwyssimposium te praat, maar ons geld is nou op en hopelik kan ons dit volgende jaar inpas,” het Susette gesê.

Marina van der Meulen, woordvoerder van Alta du Toit-nasorgsentrum, het gesê dit was vir hulle ’n wonderlike voorreg om haar te ontmoet en te verwelkom. “Sy is ’n ware inspirasie vir almal – nie net vir mense met Down-sindroom nie. Sowat 100 mense het die bekendstelling bygewoon, wat deur Lux Verbi gereël is. Die boek is in Engels en Afrikaans by boekwinkels beskikbaar,” het Van der Meulen gesê.

Jiu­jitsu summer camp: The famous Brazilian jiu­jitsu organisation, Rio Grappling Club Worldwide, held its second annual summer camp at its Cape Town headquarters at Reps MMA in Bellville. The camp was led by founder and chief instructor, Roberto Atalla, a 5th degree black belt (7th from right in front row) and Cape Town chief instructor, Rico Hattingh, a 1st degree black belt (6th from right in front row). Brazilian jiu­jitsu was specifically designed for the weaker individual to defend themselves successfully against a larger and stronger opponent, which makes it such a great art for women and children and involves almost no aggression at all. Hattingh also runs an anti­bullying campaign through this art for his students at various schools in and around Cape Town, as it instils valuable early learning fundamentals like self­discipline, self­control and most importantly self­confidence, without resorting to violence. Jason the toast of SA’s DD2 team

D

urbanville karting star Jason Coetzee may have headed to the Rotax World Karting final in Portugal at the back a fortnight ago, but the 15-year-old from Hoërskool DF Malan came home as the toast of the team’s DD2 field after delivering a stunning performance in only his second race in that premier Rotax class.

Coetzee earned a DD2 gearbox kart place in the South African team by taking the non-gearbox Senior Max seat at the Zwartkops African Open earlier this year, which was a bit of a curveball as Jason had not even driven a gearbox kart at the time.

That did not stop the young man from taking the bull by the horns as he arrived in Portugal as the youngest and least experienced DD2 driver on the grid, racing against national champions from Jason Coetzee around the world.

Coetzee did not disappoint, emerging among the cream of the SA DD2 crop as he went further into the competition than any of his teammates, finishing 14th out of 36 drivers in the pre-final to miss the final cut by all of five points. “That was so good!” a

delighted Jason admits. “What a great experience – it’s just a pity that everything came together a bit too late.

“I had never driven a gearbox kart before October, so I had to adapt to racing with gears and we also had to quickly learn about the Birel chassis we all drove in Portugal and which I raced for the first time, but I am very happy with my 14th place in that prefinal, especially considering that I was the youngest driver in the class in only my second race in a DD2 kart.

“Of course I would have preferred to have made it into the final, but now I have so much more experience and confidence to carry into next year’s racing. I really want that ticket (15) next year!

“I need to thank my team – Dennis from CRG Holland , my mechanic Joost. and my mentor Umpie – for keeping me focused.

“Most of all I want to thank my mom and dad for their investment in my sport to allow me to me reach for my dream,” he says.

D’ville Cricket Club clinches T20 title Durbanville Cricket Club’s Senior First XI were recently crowned the local Western Province Cricket Association’s Premier League Amateur T20 champions.

The team successfully defended their title by beating both the Cape Town Cricket Club and the University of the Western Cape in the semi-final and final respectively.

On Sunday 12 November, the team achieved further success by winning the Community Cup play-off matches, beating both Mossel Bay Cricket Club (South-western Districts champions) and VredenburgSaldanha Cricket Club (Boland champions) by six and four wickets respectively,

thereby extending their unbeaten run of nine consecutive and competitive T20 match wins this season. As Western Cape Province champions, the team will participate in the national Momentum Community Cup tournament to be held in Pretoria from 8 to 10 December.

The team, which boasts a wealth of talent featuring numerous former provincial youth and former and current first-class cricketers, is proudly coached and captained by Manny Senger and Kuda Samunderu respectively, both of whom are also very actively involved in coaching and promoting cricket in the local community youth circles.

Neil van der Vyver (9) van die Voorbereidingskool Durbanville het weer ’n puik jaar beleef en 2017 se nasionale junior motocrosskompetisie oorheers.

Om die jaar onoorwonne af te sluit met 14 uit 14 wenne, is ’n prestasie wat nie sommer gou weer geëwenaar sal word nie.

Hy het die prestasie in die 50cc-PRO-klas behaal en het ook die FIM Africa Motocross, of African Nations, wat in Botswana gehou is, vir die tweede agtereenvolgende keer gewen en so sy titel suksesvol verdedig.

“Vanjaar was nog meer spesiaal as in 2016, omdat ek my doel bereik het om al my renne te wen, insluitend die African Champs,” het

hy gesê.

“Ek oefen baie hard en om die jaar so af te sluit, maak my net nog meer opgewonde vir die 2018-seisoen. Ek sien baie uit na volgende jaar aangesien ek opskuif na die 65ccklas, waar ek my beste gaan gee om nog titels te wen,” vertel Neil.

Dit het alles begin toe sy pa, Werner, vir Neil reeds op 3-jarige ouderdom sy eerste fiets gekoop het en hy by Zone 7 aan sy natuurlike talent begin skaaf het.

MELKBOS ROTARY CLUB’S ICARE PROJECT: OUTRIDERS HAND OVER CHEQUE, SPECTACLES

Giving the gift of sight

T

he organisers of the annual West Coast Express cycle race, the Outriders Cycling Club, handed over a cheque of R25 000, along with hundreds of used spectacles, frames and sunglasses, to the Rotary Club of Melkbosstrand at a Rotary meeting last week Tuesday at the Atlantic Beach Hotel in Melkbosstrand.

Every year, the organisers select a charity project to support and this year the beneficiary was the ICare Project of the Rotary Club of Melkbosstrand. The project is a community-based programme that aims to prevent vision loss and blindness by promoting the early detection and timely treatment of eye diseases. Riders were encouraged to bring along any used spectacles, sunglasses or frames to the race. St Luke’s Hospice (West Coast) also donated generously. These spectacles will be refurbished with new lenses if applicable, and distributed to people receiving Sassa grants and learners in need who have been identified and tested in the programme.

In addition to the spectacles, a cheque to the value of R25 000 was handed over, which will go towards covering the costs of the necessary lenses. The funds are the direct pro-

ceeds of the race and are in recognition of the Melkbos Rotarians marshalling at the event.

Rotarian and the optometrist for the project, Frederik Jansen, says: “We are extremely grateful to the Outriders for this donation of not only much-needed funds, but all these old spectacles and frames. These funds and spectacles will make a big difference in people’s lives, from young school children struggling with their vision, to helping adults earn a living, who otherwise would not be able to do so without the gift of sight.”

“We are very honoured to be able to support the Rotary Club’s ICare Project. They are changing lives for the better, and we are humbled by their incredible work,” says Derwyn Oxley, chairperson of the Outriders Cycling Club.
