PAULINE KAPLAN: RETIRING AS SECRETARY OF BOSMANSDAM PRIMARY AFTER 35 YEARS

W

henever people were surprised to hear she was still at Bosmansdam Primary School, Pauline Kaplan (84) would joke: “I’m a slow learner”.

But now, after 35 years in which she has seen former learners’ children and even their children’s children pass through the school, this beloved secretary is calling it a day.

Kaplan and her late husband, Max, moved to Bothasig 50 years ago in 1967. All four their children and five grandchildren attended the school and Kaplan served on the school committee. The school was established during the pioneer days of Bothasig.

“There were only a few families and all attended school here,’’ she says.

Tragedy struck in 1982 when one of the two secretaries of the school drowned in the Goodwood swimming pool. Kaplan received a phone call from then principal, Jan Botes, asking whether she would like to come and work at the school. “I said I’d love to.”

Back then secretaries were not high on the list of priorities of the education department and they had a tiny office, she says. She witnessed how things changed over the years to become more like a business. She thanks God for giving her the job and says she did not know much when she started. When the computer age came she wanted to learn it all.

“I was computer illiterate but I slowly learned to adjust.”

At the school the teachers became like her family. They would come and ask for Bible verses. She would encourage them and pray for them. “It was far more than just being a secretary. The Lord said to me, be a mother.” She will miss this human contact, but feels the Lord is telling her it is time to close the door. It’s a struggle, she admits, as she is still blessed with good health.

For Kaplan this career was a calling. Recently this Bible verse came to her: “I thank Christ Jesus our Lord for He abled me because he counted me faithful putting me into this ministry” (1 Timothy 1:12).

God has equipped her and blessed her, she says, as she recalls how her extended school family supported her after Max passed away 11 years ago.

She worked under five principals and had a good relationship with all.

Lately she’s only been working three days a week from 09:00 to 12:00 and already misses her relationship with the children, being there only a few hours a day. The school has

kept her on to teach her replacement, she says.

One is not always aware of the impact of what you do, says Kaplan. Last week at the school’s prize-giving ceremony, a mother, whom she complimented on her son’s per-

formance, told her that the reason she had decided to enrol all her children there was because Kaplan had taken her on a tour around the premises on the first day she came to visit the school.

“As a school secretary one has to move beyond – you need to be there in the moment. You have to get on with the parents and speak nicely to the learners – you can’t condemn. You have various cases here and you see life, but you are just there for the moment, because you don’t live their lives.

Parents might be afraid of the principal, but they should not be afraid of the secretary,” she says.

She can’t remember much of her childhood, but as the middle child of three she often felt unloved, says Kaplan. This is why she later told Max they must have either two or four children.

Help police go pink and purple B

othasig police launched a programme in support of the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children campaign on Friday 24 November.

T-shirts with anti-abuse messages, painted by the police and community members, were put up on the fence of the police station to raise awareness.

The display will run for the duration of the 16 days until 10 December. Staff from Swart Security, under the leadership of Louise de Beer, added purple bows and ribbons to the fence.

The aim is to draw the attention of passersby and raise awareness regarding abuse, says Warrant Officer Jacques Mostert, spokesperson for Bothasig police.

He challenges everyone to add more pink and purple ribbons and bows to the fence as an act of solidarity against the abuse of women and children.

inne ure nadat die WesKaapse vereniging vir persone met gestremdhede (WCAPD) op 6 November ’n versoek op hul Facebook-blad geplaas het dat hulle op soek is na ’n eiermatras en ’n wig-kussing om die lewe vir ’n kankerlyer ’n bietjie gemakliker te maak, het Marius van Rensburg, ’n plaaslike sakeman, ingestem om dit te skenk.

Op Dinsdag 17 Oktober het Christa van Wyk (60) nog as versorger vir ’n bejaarde vrou gewerk toe sy skielik ineengestort het. Twee dae later het sy die skokdiagnose van fase vierpankreaskanker ontvang.

Sedertdien het sy nie ’n inkomste nie en is sy nog in die proses om werkloosheidsversekering te eis. Sy woon tans by haar dogter in Goodwood.

Van Rensburg, wat al sedert 1994 die eienaar is van Solutions Medical in Goodwood, sê hulle maak van tyd tot tyd skenkings, maar nooit aan organisasies nie, net aan individue. “Ek het maar net gedink as ek nie help nie, wie gaan?”

Observance, vigilance pay off for police Observance and vigilance led to the arrest of a man for theft out of a motor vehicle in Monte Vista last Monday, 27 November.

Captain Waynne Theunis, spokesperson for Goodwood police, says that at about 07:20 members of District Watch Security found a suspect in possession of housebreaking implements and called Goodwood police for assistance.

Warrant Officer Marius Swartz and Constable Marco Solomon responded to the complaint and took the man to Goodwood Police Station. While they were busy questioning him, two other complaints were received from the same area in Monte Vista.

In responding to the complaints, the officers viewed video footage of the same man breaking into a Ford Ranger and stealing a black crate with tools. The officers searched the surrounding area and found the stolen crate.

Back at the station, Solomon arrested the 40-year-old suspect. The suspect then took Swartz and Solomon to an address in De La Fontaine Avenue where they found more stolen goods from the Ford Ranger, hidden in a flower bed.

The man appeared in the Goodwood Magistrate’s Court on a charge of theft out of a motor vehicle.

Soos Saartjie is dié nuwe wynreeks raar MARITA MEYER

H

aar naam is Saartjie en haar gunsteling-druif is ’n semillon. Sy’t net oë vir een man – haar mens-pa Arno Smith, die wynmaker by Hillcrest.

As Arno op die kwad spring om deur die wingerde te ry, ry Saartjie saam. As Arno vroegoggend druiwe pluk om te proe, proe Saartjie al stertswaaiend saam. Haar gunsteling-druif is semillon.

Toe Arno dus aan ’n naam moes dink vir Hillcrest se nuwe enkelkultivar-wynreeks, was Saartjie die logiese keuse. Soos Saartjie, is die nuwe reeks enig in sy soort.

“Saartjie is ’n besondere jackrusselltjie,” vertel Arno. Sy was die kleinste van al die babahondjies en ietwat skaam. Sy’t so ’n oulike hartvormige vlekkie op haar voorkop.

Ek was dadelik verlief.”

Die dertigjarige Arno, ’n oudleerder van die Hoërskool J.G. Meiring, het sewe jaar gelede by Hillcrest begin werk ná hy sy studies op Elsenburg voltooi het.

Een van sy vriende uit sy Elsenburg-dae het ’n jackrussell, genaamd Boet, gehad.

“Ek’t toe gesê die dag wat ek ’n hond kry, gaan ek haar Saartjie noem. Soos die karakters in ons eerste leesboek op skool, Boet en Saartjie.”

Daar’s ’n ander Saartjie in Arno se familie

Onafskeidbaar – Saartjie en haar “mens-pa”, die wynmaker Arno Smith.

Haar gesiggie verskyn ook op die etiket van die nuwe wynbottels – vernuftig geteken deur Arno se swaer, Jonathan Mitchell.

Arno het in 2016 begin eksperimenteer met semillon-druiwe, wat gewoonlik in versnitte gebruik word. Hy’t ’n ton geoes en dit natuurlik in ou Franse eikehoutvate laat

gis. Geen kommersiële gis is bygevoeg om die proses te bespoedig nie – ’n tegniek wat wild fermentation genoem word.

Ná gisting plaasgevind het, is die wyn vir ’n verdere ses maande in die vate gelaat om te verouder. Die resultaat het selfs Arno se verwagtinge oortref en omdat dié druif Saartjie se gunsteling is, is dit na haar genoem.

Sukses het Arno aangespoor om verder te eksperimenteer en in 2004 het hy besluit om drie ander kultivars aan te plant: Cabernet Franc, Malbec en Petit Verdot. Dit was ’n dapper stap, want Hillcrest was nog altyd bekend vir sy Bordeaux-wyne.

Arno se waagstuk het geslaag en nou pryk die landgoed met ’n fantastiese reeks enkelkultivar-wyne. Die drie rooi wyne is van die 2016-oesjaar en die wit wyn is vanjaar geoes.

Die nuwe wynreeks is verlede week by ’n geselligheid op die wynplaas bekendgestel.

Die verskillende wyne is saam met klein bordjies kos (tapasstyl) bedien.

Saartjie was ook daar – sy’t al stertswaaiend ’n draai by elke tafel gemaak en haar soos ’n regte celeb gedra. Al wat dié madam nie self kan doen nie, is haar handtekening uitdeel. Sy’t haar mens-pa gevra om die wynbottels te onderteken.

More than 200 people took to the streets on Saturday 25 November to take part in the 5km fun run or walk in Vierlanden, Durbanville, to raise funds for the National Osteoporosis Foundation of South Africa (Nofsa).

A whopping R23 000 was raised through the event.

Nofsa is the only non-profit, voluntary health organisation dedicated to promoting lifelong bone health in South Africa.

All participants received medals.

hink Yellow Projects (TYP), which runs a feeding scheme for children and the elderly in Blikkiesdorp every Saturday morning, held a year-end function for children on Saturday 25 November. A function for the elderly will be held on Saturday 17 December.

Alison Samodien from Goodwood, the founder of TYP, says they call themselves a “hand-up awareness group” as they believe everyone can contribute to improving the lives of their neighbouring communities.

As she works full time, TYP is “after hours and on weekends,” says Alison.

Every Saturday, Alison and her team hand out sandwiches and fruit to the children and cooked soup to the elderly and atrisk families of Blikkiesdorp.

“We also collect secondhand pre-loved clothing to distribute to those in need of a hand-up, and we run a ‘clean your hood’ project every Saturday where residents help clean up in return for rice,” she says.

TYP’s original aim for the children’s yearend function was to feed 500 children a healthy, filling plant-based meal. Ultimately 1843 new toys, 1750 meals and 2000 cans of cooldrink were distributed in Blikkiesdorp on the day.

Alison says that after she appealed to the group’s members on Facebook to donate a toy and ingredients for a vegan stew, people opened their hearts and pockets and made it happen.

Cathi Levin Evans from Merry Pop Ins (a secondhand children’s store) also put out an appeal, which led to 705 toys being donated in the space of a week with the assistance of Kwemvelo Financial Services and other

private donors.

One member, Cheryl Terreblanche, single-handedly donated 600 toys. Party packs were donated for the younger children by the Stellenboom women from Epping Market.

Group members also made cash donations to purchase food. This food was cooked by Alison on the Friday before the function, with the help of members who came to chop vegetables for an hour or two.

In total they cooked 300 litres of vegetable stew, while some members also cooked pots of stew which they dropped off.

Dare to Share, a non-profit organisation, donated containers for the food and arranged a donation of 2000 cans of cooldrink.

Gifts were wrapped by Alison and two volunteers, Carol and Cristen Correira, in the weeks running up to the event. Volunteers on the day came from Think Yellow, Green Laundry, the Blikkiesdorp Joint Committee, Blikkiesdorp Bambanani and the community.

All the toys left over will be donated before Christmas as part of the Random Acts of Kindness Bring a Smile Campaign held by TYP every year, says Alison.

“Over the December period we need donations of non-perishables such as maize meal, porridge, sugar, soya mince and rice to distribute to the feeding schemes that feed the children in Blikkiesdorp daily.”

Water pipes The current water rationing that is taking place, which involves the complete cutting off of the water supply for short periods, can have a detrimental effect on water pipes, says Loots. “The turning on and off of water can cause pipes to burst, with subsequent risk of flooding and therefore excessive water bills. Clients would have to be aware of this fact and should be more observant in and around their properties to ensure there are no burst or leaking pipes.”

Swimming pools With reports that the water is evaporating quicker than it is raining, homeowners should cover their swimming pools to minimise water evaporation while they are not able to fill the pool due to the water restrictions, says Loots. “Swimming pools are designed to have water in them, so the system, walls and tiling of pools are more susceptible to damage if they are left exposed to the sunlight with no water. Fibreglass pools in particular need water weight from the inside to prevent them from popping out of the ground.”

Homeowners should switch off the pump if the water level drops to below the weir, as this will prevent the pump from sucking in air and in turn burning out, he says. “It is also a good idea to open the cover when it is raining to get as much water in the pool as possible.”

Gardens Due to the fact that drought is not a peril, no insurance policy will cover the reinstatement of gardens due to not being able to water the plants, says Loots. “Even though homeowners are prohibited by law and water restriction limitations from watering their gardens, they can still try to catch rainwater, use greywater or even get a borehole installed – therefore there are certain measures you can take to save your garden.”

In order to find out exactly what is and is not covered by the insurance policy, it is best for homeowners to speak to their broker who will be able to guide them through the complexities of the impact of drought on their insurance, concludes Loots.

ith Cape Town still facing extreme drought conditions, it is important for all homeowners to be aware of the impact of the drought on their home and therefore their insurance.

There are a number of areas of the home that can be impacted by water restrictions, including water pipes, swimming pools and gardens.

This is according to Dawie Loots, CEO of MUA Insurance Acceptances, who states that damage caused by drought is not a peril that is typically covered by insurance policies, because normally insurance policies cover sudden and unforeseen events, but a drought is a gradual operational cause.

The general principle in insurance is that policyholders should take all reasonable care to safeguard and protect their assets, he says. “In fact, people should act as though they are not insured. This premise also applies in a drought situation – policyholders need to do whatever is reasonably practical to minimise damage when they know about a situation like this.”

Kersvreugde vir Kaap met liedere DESIRÉE RORKE @dezzierorke

ie Walking Angels en die Walking Elves van Brackenfell se geliefde Kersliedere-sanggroepe is gereed om vanjaar weer eens Kersvreugde in Kapenaars se harte in te sing.

Hul eerste optrede vind op Vrydag 8 Desember by die Kenridge-winkelsentrum in Kenridge plaas, en op Kersdag 25 Desember sluit hulle die seisoen af by The Silo-hotel in die V & A Waterfront.

Die groepe het vanjaar in totaal 22 optredes waarmee beide groepe gaan poog om Die Burger-Kersfonds ’n hupstoot te gee.

“Ons het verlede jaar baie naby aan R20 000 gekom, en gaan vanjaar poog om dit te maak, maar kan dit ongelukkig nie doen sonder die hulp van die publiek nie,” sê die stigter, Riana van Wyk van Brackenfell.

Die groepe bestaan uit studente van die Riana van Wyk-musiekskool, wat elke jaar hul vakansies opoffer om in winkelsentrums in Kaapstad te loop en Kersliedjies te sing.

Van Wyk voeg by dat die projek ook nie moontlik sou wees sonder die ondersteuning van die verskeie winkelsentrums nie.

Hulle is Glengarry, Soneike, Kenridge, Aurora, N1 Stad, Sandown Retail Crossing, De Ville, Flamingo Square, Table View, Die Goue Akker, V & A Waterfront, Edgemead Village en Die Boord.

Die Walking Angels en die Walking Elves is die oorspronklike groep wat sedert 2000 al betrokke is met fondsinsameling vir Die Burger-Kersfonds en het deur die jare ’n instelling in veral die noordelike voorstede van Kaapstad geword.

Hulle word gekenmerk deur ’n plakkaat wat hulle by hulle dra met die embleem van Die Burger-Kersfonds daarop.

Van Wyk sê die groep sal ook altyd geklee wees in hul wit engelrokke of feetjie-uitrustings.

Die Walking Elves sal mense weer met hul Kersliedere by verskeie winkelsentrums in die Kaap vermaak.

“Die publiek is welkom om hul kleingeld in die Angels en Elves se Kerskouse te gooi en daarmee te help om minderbevoorregte kindertjies ’n beter toekoms te gee,” sê sy.

Die groep sal ook eersdaags te sien wees in ’n nuwe musiekvideo.

“Hulle is genader deur Fanie de Jager om in ’n musiekvideo te verskyn waarin hy ’n

duet saam met Steve Hofmeyr sing. Dit is ’n nuwe verwerking van die liedjie ‘So this is Christmas’ van Celine Dion, waarin die Walking Angels die agtergrondsang behartig.”

Lede van die groep het ook vanjaar elkeen ’n skoendoos vol lekkernye byderhand om deur die loop van hul optredes aan minderbevoorregte mense te oorhandig.

“Elke jaar kies ons ook ’n sentrum wat ons op 24 Desember besoek, waar ons nie bespreek is nie en gaan verras die werkers met geskenkies,” sê Van Wyk. Bussies ry van oral vir Paarl­skool se leerders

M

eer as 200 van die 340 leerders van die Paarl-skool vir neurale gestremde leerders in Brackenfell word elke dag oor die Skiereiland heen met skoolbussies na en van die skool vervoer.

Die skool se 15 bussies lê elke dag 1 300 km af.

“Hierdie soort onderwys is baie duur en die amptelike departementele subsidie skiet ver te kort,” sê Stoffel Kruger, skoolhoof. “Paarl-skool is dus genoodsaak om bykomende fondse in te samel. Ons steun baie op die goedhartigheid van ons donateurs en vriende van die skool,”

Sonja Vos en Lucus van Vuuren, plaaslike sakelui, het verlede week lekkergoedpakkies aan die leerders van die Paarlskool uitgedeel.

Stoffel Kruger (links, agter), Van Vuuren (tweede van links, agter) en Vos (middel, agter) is hier saam met ’n paar leerders.

Die Paarl-skool in Brackenfell verskaf onderrig en ondersteuning aan leerders met ’n serebrale gestremdheid, leerders met ’n liggaamlike gestremdheid en leerders met spesifieke leerprobleme.

Kruger sê die leerders word nie net skolasties deur hoogs opgeleide onderwysers ondersteun nie, maar ook gesteun deur ’n multidissiplinêre span wat uit sielkundiges, spraakterapeute, fisioterapeute en ’n mediese diens bestaan.

We women simply want to be women

Everywhere you look there are posters, T-shirts and even make-up bags saying something about “empowering women”.

Let’s get real for a minute. Women don’t want to be empowered. They are forced to be. This life in which we find ourselves has created a void for strong women to step up and ignore their natural roles as mothers, wives and nurturers to do their part: making a financial contribution to unstable economies and overpriced commodities.

Women are being made to choose between cancelling an important work meeting and watching their daughter’s graduation. They are disheartened by the fact that they are pitching an idea to a room full of men – while their son plays his last cricket match of the season and they haven’t been able to attend one.

Women are strong. We are naturally programmed to ensure the survival of our species. We will kill for our kids and will always put their needs and their hopes and We will go out of dreams far above our own. We will go our way to out of our way to worship our worship our husbands and treat husbands and them as the master treat them as of the house – although we both the master of work full days. We will “hunt” and the house – “gather” the food and groceries so although we no-one has to both work full search at the last minute for a bar of days ... soap. We will wake up at 04:00 to bake a tray of cupcakes for a school party. We’ll agree to PTA roles and nearly kill ourselves to meet the expectations of the teachers and stay-athome moms who cannot understand how we handle it all ...

We will use our resources to fundraise and sell pancakes, in-between answering emails on our androids and keeping an eye on our children’s sporting events.

Women cannot be women. We cannot wake up and take five minutes to snuggle our kids, get them ready for school and then leave to face endless hours in the day ... Instead, we snowball from room to room, ensuring that the mad cyclone of early morning events, school lunches and breakfasts, hubby’s work meal and the dogs’ food are all in place before we spend the last five minutes on a shower, our teeth and hair. It’s only once we’re five hours into office emails that we realise we haven’t had anything to eat or drink ourselves. As a woman, at some point, you must admit failure: You cannot hold a job, be a mom and maintain your family home, so you have to choose one.

When I say choose, I mean you need to pick your career over it all. You have to work because you pay for at least half of everything. You put your kids in aftercare and employ a domestic worker. This woman is living a portion of your life that you cannot find the time to enjoy – raising your kids and enjoying your home while you’re out there “juggling balls” and slaving away. Women don’t want to be empowered. We are forced to be. What we truly want is to be women.

It’s no wonder half the women you meet are on calming meds or seeing a psychologist. The other half are addicts: wine, gym, running ... we are broken.

I shudder to think of all the women who run away from home; who take their own lives; who get drunk every night just to cope. So how should women really feel empowered? How about sitting and enjoying a hot cup of tea for a change; watching their husband and kids hang up the washing once in a while; coming home to a cooked meal and tidy home?

Dog owner should own up The article “Canine calamity” (08/11) presents a very one-sided view and actually portrays Hunter’s owners as innocent victims being hounded by Law Enforcement. I cannot let this go unchallenged as I have my own experience with this dog and its owner.

I would like to put the following on record: The dog in question has on many occasions not been leashed and been left to chase after people and other dogs; he has bitten a neighbour on the arm, attacked a smaller dog and left it with a gaping hole on its back, and on more than one occasion has charged at my children and forced them to jump off their bikes, and has charged at domestic workers on their way to work.

When I eventually approached the owner of the dog to ask him to please not allow his dog to chase after me and my children when we exercise our democratic right to move around freely, I was sworn at in the vilest way in front of my children, shown the middle finger and told to get off the field where they were standing around with their dogs, as I “do not belong there”. Respect for the way I bring up my children prevented me from retaliating to the uncivilised way the gentleman concerned reacted, to what I thought was a very civil request.

Even after the incident in question, the dogs were still allowed to run free, to the extent where before we can go out on our bicycles, my children first run to the fence to check whether the owner and his dogs are on the field.

I live right across from the field and can attest to the

fact that I have also on more than one occasion seen this dog chase after the gentleman who is now the litigant in this issue.

In the interest of fairness, I can confirm that whilst out on a ride at 06:04 recently, I saw the owner and his wife coming out of their premises with the dogs on leashes.

The dog owner concerned will no doubt read this letter and I hope it makes him realise that my children are still traumatised whenever they see him and his dog.

Don’t waste your precious vote To the writer who is oh so dismayed at the DA (“Disillusioned with the DA”, 22/11).

You state that you may decide not to vote at all. Well then, who do you think you are spiting by wasting your vote? Yes, wasting your vote.

That is after all what you will be doing. Further to that, by not voting you are by default voting for the likes of the ANC and other similar parties. Please, if (and I pray it does not happen) the ANC, or worse still the EFF, gets to win, then please do not rush to start complaining should the corruption continue and even get worse. You may even stand to lose your residence should the EFF get in. I and others that are like-minded would rather vote DA due to its hands-on approach in fighting against corruption and calling for accountability from all ministers, as well as the president. They are notably the only visible party that is not afraid to stand up and challenge the ones in power to come clean and to be accountable for all their corruption, theft and blatant plundering of the country’s

resources since coming into power.

So by all means, go and do something that takes your mind off voting while the rest of us responsible people use our precious God-given right to vote at the polls on voting day. I for one will definitely not waste my vote and will be found at the voting station exercising my vote to oust the ANC and their corrupt ministers as well as leader.

May I call upon the Lord to protect us on that day and guide us to vote responsibly and with due and guided thought to make the right choice.

Paying for water I have not used Is the City of Cape Town bankrupt? Why are they stealing from the citizens?

I have installed water tanks at my premises and am currently storing 14 500 litres.

For the last six months I have received ridiculous water accounts ranging from 3kl to 12kl.

When I checked the water meter I realised that the lens of the meter had been damaged to such an extent by the person reading the meter that it was impossible to read.

I lodged a complaint and the meter was replaced on 13 October. I photographed the meter reading when it was removed. The reading was 1690. The next account reflected an estimated meter reading of 1701.

This amounted to a consumption of 14kl. We are two people in the house, we have 14.5kl of tank water and we do not use any municipal water to flush the toilet. My first email about the situation

was sent on 22 October. In the email I supplied the photograph of the old meter and explained the sequence of events in great detail. The only response was a “nonreply@capetown.gov.za” email informing me that a response would be sent shortly.

To my dismay I have noted that another estimate was entered on my account – this time a consumption of 15kl.

I am a retired person and I have spent a fortune buying tanks to conserve water and be a responsible citizen. Now I find myself paying for water I have not used.

Wat die oog visueel ervaar, het groter impak as om te luister. Die tolvrynommer vir aanmeldings is nie suksesvol nie omrede aanmelding vereis ’n dwelmhandelaar se volle adres en besonderhede tot die fynste detail. Wat het van die destydse dwelmeenheid vir die telefoniese direkte aanmelding, Sanab en die tydskrif Servamus geword?

new book, written in language children can understand, is now available for free to guide parents and role players on preventing child sexual abuse.

The release of the book coincided with World Aids Day on 1 December, but also forms part of the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children.

The authors, a social worker and a clinical psychologist, have more than 50 years of combined experience in the field of child protection.

It is for this reason that Edith Kriel and Marita Rademeyer decided to use that combined knowledge to develop the book, titled Preventing Child Sexual Abuse: A Resource for Parents, Caregivers and Teachers, which they know will help parents talk to young children about bodies, sex and body rules.

The activity book, available from Jelly Beanz, a non-profit organisation that works with children and families who have suffered trauma and abuse, is written in a way that engages children and guides parents step by step in making a serious discussion fun, according to a Jelly Beanz statement.

“The parent thus has the privilege of being the first person to discuss sexuality with the child and to cement healthy values in this very important part of a child’s life,” the organisation further states.

According to a study published by the Optimus Foundation in 2017, one in three SA children, including boys, suffers sexual abuse, Jelly Beanz says.

“Children are bombarded with sexual messages on television, social media, magazines and on the internet. Young people are being exposed to pornography at a rate never experienced before in our country.

“Unfortunately children often act out what they have seen, which has led to an enormous increase in children being abused by other children – a phenomenon referred to as child-on-child sexual abuse.”

Jelly Beanz believes that parents and caregivers need to engage children in open and honest conversations about bodies and sexuality to help prevent sexual abuse.

Abuse and bullying can have lifelong negative effects on people, often right through to adulthood. This is, however, not the case for one Melkbosstrand resident who has turned being a victim of bullying into a positive.

Liesl Schoonraad, a former strongwoman and member of the non-profit organisation Strong 4 Life, today tries to help and motivate those caught up in similar situations.

She arranges and conducts talks on abuse and bullying at schools across South Africa.

Her story, she says, started when she was young. “I had dreams, but they were shattered by abusers in my life. Bullies at school made me feel I could accomplish nothing.

“At the age of 39, however, I decided to live a lifelong dream by swimming to Robben Island. I did this on my 40th birthday.

While training in the gym I actually discovered I had a physical strength I was not even aware of,” she explains.

Schoonraad decided to use this strength and started participating in strongman sport activities. “I remember as a child watching World’s Strongest Man and believing I could get through the challenges I was facing. I was totally inspired by these strong athletes.”

Her first strength event involved pulling a 10-ton truck and then only three weeks later, a Dakota aircraft.

“I took part in South Africa’s Strongest Woman Competition and was asked by a social worker to speak at a local school. Before I knew it I was visiting schools across the country speaking against bullying.”

Her most recent event was in December last year where she flipped a total of 100 tons of tyres for an awareness campaign for the Reeva Steenkamp Foundation.

“My passion is for kids and for them to feel loved and heard,” Schoonraad says.

Strong 4 Life and a group of supporting organisations are currently organising the Strongman Competition taking place next week in Melkbosstrand. . According to Judy Strickland, founder and director of Hope House Counselling Centre, they deal with regular incidents of bullying among children and adults.

“It has become increasingly apparent that we need to take serious action within schools to change this behaviour. Hope House is looking into developing a programme that helps children to develop and adopt empathetic behaviours. A core part of this project is getting parents and teachers to model empathy, showing children around them how to treat others,” Strickland says.

from a small town in Namibia called Gobabis”, moved to Cape Town in 2006. Now, 11 years later, he works as a singer, model, actor, presenter and restaurant owner.

“Other than that I am just a down-to-earth regular guy with an amazing job,” he says.

Robberts studied Business Law, Communications and Public Relations at Damelin College. He was the Mr Model Look SA 2015 and a Mr South Africa 2016 finalist.

But it’s arguably his singing talent that is seeing him draw the crowds.

“My music is a reflection of my life and tells a story of things I have gone through, to which other people might be able to relate,” he says.

Robberts recently released his new single, “Easy to Love”, which was launched during a surprise party in Bellville organised by his manager, Ryno Meyer.

“The song to me made sense at that point in my life. It is a tribute to love and how easy it is to love somebody when you find the right person to give your heart to,” he says.

When he isn’t busy with all his other ventures, he spends his free time at his restaurant, The Backyard Grill in Sea Point.

s alles goed gaan sal ’n parapleeg van Oostersee nooit weer kan sê sy kan nie iets bywoon omdat haar rolstoel stukkend is nie.

Danksy honderde donasies en minstens 900 pakkies koekies het Hester Louw verlede week ’n splinternuwe elektroniese rolstoel ontvang.

“Ek het nie woorde nie,” vertel Louw bewoë. “Dit is fantasties.”

Hierdie mylpaal is bereik nadat Comine Hopley (85) van Oude Westhof-aftreeoord van haar lot gehoor het.

Louw en Hopley se dogter, Julie, is al vir jare vriende.

Louw, wat in Quasar, ’n tehuis vir parapleë, in Parow bly, is verlam sedert sy op 29 haar nek gebreek het nadat sy in die bad gegly het.

Sy het ook die gebruik van haar hande verloor en beheer haar elektroniese stoel met haar pinkie.

Soos haar rolstoel egter ouer en meer afgerem geraak het, kon Louw al minder doen. Sy moes pal in die bed bly terwyl haar rolstoel herstel word.

“In 2016 het ons ’n kwotasie vir ’n nuwe stoel gekry en amper flou geval toe ons hoor dit kos R85 000,” vertel Julie.

Louw se toenemende vaskluistering het Hopley só aangeraak, sy het besluit sy moet iets doen. Eers is ’n bankrekening geopen waarin geld gedeponeer kon word. Donasies het gou donasies begin invloei, veral toe die NG Kerk Kenridge se senior klub betrokke geraak en daaroor in die kerk se bulletin geskryf is.

Hopley het komberse gehekel, handwerkartikels gemaak en lootjies verkoop – alles

Sy het ook 900 pakkies koekies gebak en verkoop. Uit elke pakke het sy net R2 wins gemaak. ’n Jaar en twee maande later het hulle uiteindelik genoeg geld gehad om die stoel aan te koop. “Ek kon dit nie doen as ek nie hulp van Bo gehad het nie,” sê Hopley.

Sy gebruik self ’n beweeglikheidsbromponie (mobility scooter). “Ek is nou skoon jaloers op hierdie rolstoel,” lag sy en wys na Louw se stoel.

En met twee klein kinders en ’n vrou by die huis, was hierdie die grootste uitdaging op die stel van sy jongste fliek, Vuil Wasgoed.

“Jou lyf raak net nie ooit heeltemal gewoond daaraan nie,” sê die akteur Tim Theron, wat in Bellville gebore is.

“Maar dit is letterlik die enigste uitdaging wat ek sou kon uitwys,” skerm hy.

In Vuil Wasgoed volg kykers die verhaal van Wim (Bouwer Bosch) en Kevin (Bennie Fourie), wat al vir jare in ’n klerewassery werk.

Saans hou hulle partytjie in hul kliente se klere.

By só ’n partytjie ontdek hulle ’n afgesnyde vinger wat aan ’n juweeldief behoort.

Die tweestuks word hierna in ’n onderwêreld ingesleep met ’n hele rits misdadigers en polisiebeamptes op hul spoor.

Die rolprent, wat op 8 Desember uitgereik word, spog met ’n rits bekendes in die Suid-Afrikaanse vermaakbedryf, onder andere Bosch, Fourie, Nico Panagio, Louis Minnaar, Simone Nortmann en Leandie Du Randt Bosch.

Theron sê hy dink almal op stel het vroeg al gevoel hulle werk aan iets spesiaals. Boonop het hulle goed saamgewerk.

“Ek, Bennie en Bouwer (Bosch) ken mekaar al van ons universiteitsdae af en ons verstaan mekaar se sin vir humor. So dit was hope pret om

saam met hulle op stel te wees.”

Die hele rolverdeling het goed oor die weg gekom, vertel hy.

“Daar is lekker gekuier, gesels en grappies gemaak wanneer ons nie voor die kamera moes wees nie.”

Dit was ook nie enigste hoogtepunt vir hom nie.

“Daar is natuurlik ’n klein seuntjie binne my wat dit verskriklik baie geniet het om die aksietonele te verfilm!”

Dit was juis een van die redes hoekom hy by die projek betrokke geraak het.

“Vir my persoonlik was dit ook ’n kans om ’n genre aan te pak waaroor ek mal is, en ook ’n karakter wat heeltemal anders is as enige iets wat ek voorheen gedoen het.”

Theron geniet rolle wat hom uitdaag.

As hy nie op die skerm te sien is nie, hou sy kinders, Sophia (3) en Migael (10 maande), hom en sy vrou, Juanli, besig.

Stokperdjies? ‘‘Skuus, ek verstaan nie die woord nie,” skerts hy.

“Tans is daar nie veel tyd vir stokperdjies nie – ons twee besige mensies maak daarvan seker!”

Die gesin bly op Stellenbosch.

Theron laat egter nie die gras onder sy voete groei nie en het pas klaar verfilm aan Quentin Krog se nuwe rolprent, ’n Ander Mens.

Hy is help ook om ’n nuwe reeks te ontwikkel waaroor hy baie opgewonde is. Hy kan egter nie nou al enige besonderhede verklap nie. “Ek is ontsaglik opgewonde daaroor!”

Durbanville (293/3, gesl.) het ’n beurtoorwinning behaal.

Bellville bly met ’n derde oorwinning in vier wedstryde ook onder die voorbokke op die punteleer.

Nadat Bellville Saterdag ’n eerstebeurtvoorsprong van 84 lopies teen Brackenfell behaal het, het hy Sondag met sy 67/1 ’n sege met 9 paaltjies oor die Brakke (148) beklink.

Dit was aanvanklik ’n aanvangsvennootskap van 112 lopies tussen Wikus van Vuuren (93) en Wian Engelbrecht (53) wat Bellville (269/7, gesl.) ’n houvas besorg het.

Daarna het Simphiwe Yiba (5/33) die afrondingswerk in die besoekers se tweede beurt gedoen.

Mark Andrionatos (64) was Brackenfell se beste kolwer.

avid Barnet en Tjaart Oosthuizen staan bekend as die “Legendes van die See” en is oorgehaal om op Nuwejaarsdag vir die twaalfde jaar as wenners van die uitmergelende Jumtree Trans Agulhas-rubberbootresies uit die stryd te tree.

Vanjaar is die 30ste keer wat die wêreld se moeilikste opblaasbootuitdaging tussen Plettenbergbaai en Vishoek van 28 Desember tot 1 Januarie beslis word.

Tjaart (Welgemoed) en David (Blouberg) is al vir 15 jaar spanmaats, wat ’n rekord is in dié kompetisie.

Andley (25), Aython (23) en Azario (19) Adams het nie net al drie dieselfde voorletter nie, maar is boonop al drie regterhandse snelboulers. Om sake verder te kompliseer is daar ’n vierde Adams in die span, maar Jancan is darem nie ook familie nie.

Daar word soms grappenderwys na Tygerberg verwys as die Adams-uitnodigingspan. Die drie broers se pa, Johannes (Hannie) Adams, wat tot in 1997 vir Tygerberg se eerste span gespeel het en tans in die WPunie se uitvoerende bestuur dien, was tot in 2016 vir 20 jaar lank die klub se voorsitter. En tans is Alnico Adams (ook nie familie nie) die voorsitter van die Tiere-klub.

Die drie Adams-broers, wat as ongetroudes al drie nog by hul ouers in Ravensmead inwoon, is ’n handvol in die huishouding, vertel pa Hannie. “Hulle gesels die heeldag krieket, maar deur hul mededinging inspireer hulle mekaar op hierdie wyse. En hulle eet ’n mens uit die huis uit!”

Hul oudste broer, Antonio (30), het darem al die pad gevat. Anders as sy “boeties” is hy ’n draaibouler wat net sosiale krieket speel.

Die enigste vroulike lid van die familie, ma Michelle, was in haar jongdae (as Michelle Brown) een van die top-800 m-atlete in die Westelike Provinsie.

Die Adams-broers – almal produkte van die Laerskool Bellview en die Hoërskool Belhar – “leef” vir krieket. Aython en Andley speel in die Kaapse wintermaande graafskapkrieket in Engeland, terwyl Azario, wat maar twee jaar gelede begin krieket speel het, ontpop het as ’n vaardige afrigter by laerskole.

Andley kan spog met boulsyfers van 7/34 wat hy twee seisoene gelede vir Tygerberg teen die Avendale-klub ingeoes het.

Die Adams-broers Andley, Azario en Aython speel saam in die eerste span van die Tygerberg-krieketklub.

En selfs nog beter is die 7/24 wat hy in Engeland vir die Boynehill-klub teen Bagshom laat klap het. Aython se beste vertoning was die 5/29 wat hy verlede seisoen teen die Primrose-klub platgetrek het, terwyl hy vroeër in November met sy 4/14 ’n driekuns teen Guguletu behaal het.

Die jongeling, Azario, is vinnig besig om in sy broers se voetspore te volg. In ’n 20/20wedstryd onlangs teen Guguletu het hy 4/10 laat kantel.

toe ek as backup op ’n Trans Agulhas gegaan het saam met vriende wat deelgeneem het om meer te leer oor die sport. Ek het onmiddellik belanggestel en die volgende jaar deelgeneem aan my eerste Trans Agulhas.

“My en David se paadjies het in 2002 gekruis toe ons kragte saamgesnoer en ons eie span begin het. In daardie selfde jaar is ons gekroon as die Suid-Afrikaanse nasionale kampioene, sowel as kampioene van die Westelike Provinsie, Trans Atlantic en Trans Agulhas,” vertel Tjaart.

Voorbereiding duur die hele jaar wat gimnasiumwerk insluit en baie tyd op die see in verskillende weersomstandighede.

“Ons oefen deurgaans deur die jaar

in die gimnasium met kardiovaskulêre- en kragoefeninge. Ons spandeer ook baie tyd op die see in verskillende weers- en see-omstandighede aangesien die Trans Agulhas ’n verskeidenheid van weerpatrone mag inhou.

“Dit is baie veeleisend, alhoewel ons glo 90% van die bydrae tot ons sukses lê in ons voorbereiding – fisiek sowel as geestelik. Die adrenalienafskeiding help ’n mens gelukkig om die onmiddellike fisieke pyne van die resies te oorkom.

“Sowat drie maande voor die resies verskerp ons alle oefeninge. Kommunikasie en beplanning tussen ons as spanmaats is van kardinale belang en ons glo dit is ook grotendeels die rede vir ons sukses in die sport,” sê Tjaart.
