There was some confusion as to the pool being open during summer. It will be closing today as the peak summer season comes to an end. Read article on page 2. PHOTO: CARINA ROUX
DAY ZERO: CITY ACTIVATES DISASTER OPERATIONS CENTRE TO EXECUTE DISASTER PLAN
‘We have a crisis’ CARINA ROUX

ot enough rain, too many people, or maybe there were just too many politicians in our drinking water? The answers are sometimes as clear as the last bit of muddy water left in our dams. Oh, and do we have enough dams, and what about desalination plants, and and ...? There is, however, one thing Capetonians can be sure of, even though (beware “dry” humour) it took a while to sink in: We have a water crisis. “It’s pointless to complain or to point fingers at officials not doing enough, says Brian Lawson, chairperson of the Goodwood Rate-
payers’ Association. He says the crisis has led to people finding innovative ways to save water. “We’ve been through a crisis before with Eskom, and we will get through this one,” says Lawson. On Monday (29 January), the City of Cape Town activated the Disaster Operations Centre (DOC) to execute the City’s Water Disaster Plan, which will take effect in the event of Day Zero – when the collective dam level reaches 13.5% and the City will shut off water supply to taps (with some exceptions). According to a statement from the City’s media office, this is necessary to stretch the supply until the dams can be recharged to a sufficient level to once again allow water
distribution via the reticulation system. To avoid Day Zero, the total current water consumption across the City has to be reduced to 450 million litres a day, which equates to 50 litres per person daily. The City says their Water and Sanitation Department has since March last year been introducing various initiatives to lower water demand, including advanced pressure reduction to lower the flow rate, and the installation of water meters to reduce consumption. Many residents have reduced their consumption and should continue doing so. And the rest will need to come on board. V To page 2.
