he need for more police reservists and the importance of drawing in disabled members of the community were just two of the points raised at the Bothasig Community Policing Forum’s annual general meeting held last Wednesday 21 February. Colonel Patrick Jacobs, station commander of Bothasig police, said they need to look at zones within the larger police precinct, as it is easier to police a smaller area. Jacobs said the way in which reservists are currently being recruited is not ideal. He said a database needs to be established of people who are interested. Disabled people also need to be drawn into the community structures. Jacobs said he knows of some disabled people who feel left out and some who have a lot of passion that can be utilised for administra-
tive work. Jacobs reminded the attendees that people can give feedback on the quality of service they receive from the local police. This tells him exactly how good their service is and they can then deal with any issues. He mentioned they are currently experiencing some problems with the police station’s Telkom lines.
Congestion Helen Carstens, ward councillor, reported that she had met that morning (last Wednesday) with Law Enforcement, Traffic Services and the principal of Tafelberg School, Lionel Beneke, regarding the congestion at the school in the early mornings. She said she had received a commitment that they will create a presence over the next three months to assist with congestion, bad driving and
pedestrian crossings. Another area with a lot of congestion in the mornings is at the intersection of Edgemead Drive, Vryburger Avenue and Bosmansdam Road, said Carstens. “What people generally do is come from Vryburger Avenue, drive over the intersection, go into the Engen garage, make a U-turn and then turn back on Edgemead Drive to get onto the slipway” (to head towards the N7). She said she made a motion to the subcouncil last year to close off the slipway turning into the garage and that this has been approved. “Signage is in the process of being ordered that will indicate the closing time of 06:00 to 09:00 in order to curb the illegal U-turning through the Engen garage.’’ According to Carstens, a traffic impact

With regard to the progress of the dog park next to Bosmansdam High School, she said the problem is the wall next to the N7 freeway, as pedestrians are removing slabs from the wall. Another fence will now be erected on the inside of the wall and water-wise plants with thorns will be planted along the wall to keep people and animals at bay. A smaller park within the larger dog park will also take shape over the next two months.
