MANDELA DAY: LITTER AND ILLEGAL DUMPING CLEAN-UP

Ton of waste collected ESMÉ ERASMUS @erasmusesme

ittering and illegal dumping around Fisantekraal received a blow when more than 1.3 tons of waste was collected by volunteers in two projects for Mandela Day. A total of 302 kg of waste was removed in a project on Thursday 18 July by the Mosselbank River Conservation Team (MRCT) and other organistions. More than a ton of waste was also removed on Saturday 20 July by Won Life in collaboration with volunteers of the Urban Edge Church and a local attorney firm. Despite heavy winter rain, volunteers of the MRCT, Fisantekraal Youth Structure and several departments of the City of Cape Town such as the solid waste management department, as well as volunteers of the University of Western Cape (UWC) and local police services, joined forces to tackle the open spaces upstream of the Mosselbank River in Greenville in Fisantekraal. Among them was Dr Rissa Niyobuhungiro from Bellville, a student of the UWC who is currently doing a post-doctorate in why people take part in illegal dumping, focusing her research on Fisantekraal. “This year the MRCT linked up with various organisations to take action on illegal dumping and littering in the area while educating the volunteers on the importance of a healthy environment,” said Danielle Cronje, environmental officer of Garden Cities. “We took action to inspire change for Mandela Day,” she said.
