Residents vs buses ESMÉ ERASMUS AND JANA BEKKER

A solution to the frustration Kenridge and Protea Valley residents experience with Golden Arrow buses in their areas may soon be dealt with after a meeting was held between officials of the City of Cape Town and residents last week.

The city’s roads and transport department undertook to investigate the current bus routes in the areas and provide feedback to residents within a month. Andrea Crous, ward councillor for Ward 70, organised the meeting, which was held last Tuesday 5 June between four representatives of this department and residents. This follows countless complaints over buses, including the general way buses drive, noise pollution and deterioration of pavements as a result of buses driving over them. Geordie Hogardt, chairperson of the Kenridge The Hills Ratepayers’ Association, told TygerBurger the problem in Kenridge arose mainly around Kenridge Primary School. “The number of buses that park around the school in Kenridge has increased. “The buses also cause damage to the circle at the Kenridge Shopping Centre as they drive over the circle, because they cannot drive around the small circle,” he said. “These buses have a habit of parking wherever they want to, which can lead to accidents and pedestrian injuries, especially to children,” he said to TygerBurger. TygerBurger has witnessed a Golden Arrow bus parking illegally on the verge of Door de Kraal Road at the Kenridge dam. Most of the time, however, the bus drivers seem to use the pavements around the school as a parking space to take a rest.

Peter Bosman, treasurer of the Kenridge The Hills Ratepayers’ Association, said the buses use Mildred Avenue, Door-de-Kraal Avenue and De Bron Avenue to park. André Roux, a member of the governing body of Kenridge Primary School said at the meeting the school supported the buses being removed from the area around the school. Other residents at the meeting stated they were not against buses in their areas, but asked officials to relook at the routes. The outcome of studies done in this regard was tabled at the meeting. A city official, who cannot be named, said one of the purposes of the studies was to develop a timeline. Residential roads Grandiflora and Kreupelboom in Protea Valley are two streets affected greatly by buses passing through. The official said buses in Grandiflora Street have increased to between 24 and 25 buses per day over the last five years. Resident Carol Beattie said at times buses drive at such speeds that her garage doors rattle. “There are two sides to this issue: Golden Arrow says they have a legal right to be in the area on the one hand, and residents who don’t want the buses in the area on the other,” he said. The official said current bus operations are being managed by provincial government and not the city. “The current legal status is that Golden Arrow can operate where they see fit, but the city hopes to manage all bus operations in the future.” Many residents stated and reiterated that they were not dead set against buses, but were not satisfied with the way buses operated. They felt the many empty buses driving through the area was an issue that urgently needed to be addressed.
