he appearance of an extremely rare bird in a Durbanville garden caused quite a rustle of feathers among avid birdwatchers, also known as “twitchers”. People flew from all over the country – from as far afield as Johannesburg and Durban – and some drove overnight from the Eastern Cape to catch a glimpse of the stunning male Eurasian blackcap, an extremely rare European migrant warbler of the Sylvia genus. Not only has this bird never been seen before in the Western Cape, but it has only been spotted 26 times in the entire Southern African region, mostly in the eastern high-
lands of Zimbabwe during summer. How appropriate, then, that this rare bird happened to choose the garden of Professor David Hall, a keen birdwatcher, to make his appearance? About 500 birdwatchers came to his house in Vierlanden over the six days the bird was spotted in the garden, says Hall, a professor in Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Stellenbosch University and Tygerberg Hospital. On Sunday 16 July his wife, Heather, spotted the bird first – shortly after they had put out some fruit and seeds at the birdfeeder. He says he could not believe his eyes when he saw the rare bird. He first ran inside to grab his binoculars to make sure that he was indeed looking at a Eurasian blackcap, and then he ran back inside to get his camera.

He sent the photographs to another birdwatcher, who in turn immediately circulated the news electronically on an SA rarebird newsgroup. “Within 20 minutes the first visitors were arriving. We estimate that approximately 80 people visited on that day. The blackcap continued to entertain fairly large crowds of visitors until the Friday,” he says. Hall was even interviewed on radio about the rare sight. All these visitors to their home challenged their tea and coffee supplies, he grins. “The toilet water consumption in this time of drought might have increased, but we have water tanks so my wife provided buckets. There are so many phenomenal women with whom we share our daily lives – our mothers, wives, children, neighbours, best friends – most of them anchors who help steer our lives with steadfast care and love. With August being Women’s Month, we at TygerBurger and our sister publications (People’s Post and City Vision) wish to honour the women in our lives by honouring those women who have experienced and beaten the worst of life’s hardships and ills, emerging as survivors, proud and dignified. Please help us to help restore a little of this dignity as we once again embark on a special monthly campaign by providing Bags of Hope – literally, handbags filled with all the essentials a rape or abuse survivor might need. Two years ago the Chill Room in our offices was filled to the brim with these Bags of Hope, which contained everything from bras and panties to sanitary pads, perfume and talc, washcloths and soap, toothpaste and chocolates. In some cases, the bags contained a handwritten note wishing the receiver well on her journey to recovery and a life outside of abuse and violence. We are hoping to recreate this female pantry and be able to donate all the items we receive to a charity of our readers’ choosing. For this, we are once more calling for help from our loyal readers – those caring people who have supported our monthly campaigns so faithfully since the beginning of the year. So, if you have a handbag or two and the means to fill it with what you would have appreciated were you a recipient yourself, please bring it to our offices. We will ensure it goes to a place where it will bring light and joy amid pain and suffering. V Donate, and nominate your charity at briewe@tyg erburger.co.za. V Delivery is on the third floor of the Bloemhof Build ing at 112 Edward Street, and at Vangate Mall.
