iemersdal and Groot Phesantekraal made history when both wine farms managed a unique achievement: they not only won double gold each in the Veritas Awards recently, but both also won the FNB Top 10 Sauvignon Blanc Awards last week with the same wines.

Diemersdal was one of the top achievers at the Veritas Awards op 6 October, walking away with three double gold and four gold medals.

One of its double gold winners, the Maiden Winter Ferment Sauvignon Blanc 2017, delivered its third major accolade for the wine estate. Besides double gold at the Veritas Awards and an FNB Top 10 Sauvignon Blanc Award, the wine also won the Sauvignon Blanc Trophy at the South African National Young Wine Show.

Revolutionary wine­making process The wine is made using a revolutionary wine-making process where the Sauvignon Blanc juice is frozen during the harvest in February and then thawed five months later, after which it is fermented to produce a wine with exceptional tropical flavours.

“The FNB Sauvignon Blanc Top 10 is a very special award, as it is the only one committed to honouring the finest Sauvignon Blanc wines in South Africa,” says Thys Louw, cellar master at Diemersdal.

“Close to 200 wines were judged this year, and to make it among the Top 10 is a high-

light for any producer of wine in this most popular white wine category,” he says.

Louw adds that 2017 has proven to be an “absolutely brilliant year” for Sauvignon Blanc, with some of the best quality wines he has ever seen emerging from his sixth generation-owned family estate.

Louw says that Sauvignon Blanc has the potential to make major inroads for South African wine into export markets, especially the sought-after American market.

“The global demand for and awareness of Sauvignon Blanc is at an all-time high,” he says.

Two double gold awards for Diemersdal Groot Phesantekraal achieved its FNB Top 10 Sauvignon Blanc Award with its Groot Phesantekraal Sauvignon Blanc 2017 – the second time the wine farm has won an award in the five years this prestigious competition has existed.

Diemersdal’s other Veritas double gold awards went to its Diemersdal’s Sauvignon Blanc Reserve 2017, making the wine estate the only producer to win two double gold awards for Sauvignon Blanc this year.

Diemersdal also won double gold for its Diemersdal Malbec 2015. This was the only Malbec entered into Veritas 2017 to receive a double gold.

Gold medals went to the Eight Rows Sauvignon Blanc 2017, Merlot 2015, Pinotage 2016 and Pinotage Reserve 2016.

Mari Branders, a winemaker at Diemersdal since 2006, says this year’s Veritas Awards are of great significance to the estate, as they recognise innovation and versatility.

Verkoping van skaars boeke by Bellville­bib

V

an skaars boeke oor Suid-Afrikaanse kuns, verskeie interessante naamkundebronne, spesiale titels oor die Anglo-Boereoorlog, ’n unieke blik op die Kaapse Maleier-geskiedenis, tot klassieke Afrikaanse slapband-avontuurverhale sal te koop wees by die Vriende van Bellville-biblioteek se gewilde Africana-verkoping op Saterdag 21 Oktober.

Francois le Vaillant: reisiger in SuidAfrika en sy versameling van 165 akwarelle van 1781 tot 1784 (twee dele) bevat artikels oor Vaillant se reise, kuns, ornitologie en beskrywings van Khoi-, Boesman- en Bantoe-volke.

Hierdie kopie is nr. 316 van die beperkte oplaag van 500, wat in 1973 deur die Parlementsbiblioteek uitgegee is.

Claim to the country: the archive of Wilhelm Bleek and Lucy Lloyd (2007), saamgestel en ingelei deur Pippa Skotnes, dokumenteer die lewenswerk van Bleek en Lloyd, twee pioniernavorsers wat in die 1870’s die taal en kultuur van die !Xam opgeteken het om dit van vergetelheid te red.

Die getranskribeerde narratiewe, tekeninge, foto’s en kaarte wat oorspronklik 13 000 bladsye beslaan het, het ’n ereplek in Unesco se Memory of the Worldregister gekry. Die boek kom saam met ’n CD. Dalene Marais is die samesteller van Maggie Laubser: her paintings, drawings and graphics (1994), ’n chronologie van die kunstenaar se lewe en ’n katalogus van al die werke van Laubser wat opgespoor kon word.

Die belangstelling in die herkoms en betekenis van Suid-Afikaanse plekname bly lewendig en op die verkoping sal onder meer die volgende titels beskikbaar wees: P.E. Raper se Streekname in SuidAfrika en Suidwes (1972, Naamkundereeks 1), Ondersoek na die oorsprong en betekenis van Suid-Afrikaanse berg- en riviername; ’n Historiese-taalkundige studie deur E.J. du Plessis (1973, Naamkunde-reeks 3) en P.J. Nienaber se Suid-Afrikaanse pleknaamwoordeboek Deel 1 (1972). G.S. Nienaber en P.E. Raper se Toponymica Hottentotica (Naamkundereeks 6,7 en 10), wat as ’n stel verkoop word, is die eerste uitvoerige studie wat net aan Khoekhoense plekname gewy word – ’n monumentale werk as mens daaraan dink dat die oorspronklike Khoekhoentale in Suid-Afrika grootliks uitgesterf het. Peter Hart se Rondebosch and Rosebank street names (1998) gee interessante plaaslike agtergrondsgeskiedenis, asook die stories agter spesifieke straatname. Die kopie op die verkoping

het ’n inskripsie deur die skrywer.

Twee oorlogvertellings dra nogal die persoonlike impak van die Anglo-Boereoorlog sterk oor: Hendrina Rabie van der Merwe se Onthou!: in die skadu van die galg (1940) is een van die min dagboeke uit die Anglo-Boereoorlog wat deur ’n vrou gehou is. Sy het so dikwels uit konsentrasiekampe ontsnap dat die Engelse haar naderhand in ’n tronk aangehou het. Kalahari Mac (Freddie McDonald) vertel in Agter die skerms met die rebelle (1949) van sy deelname aan die 1914-Rebellie. Hierdie derde boek in ’n reeks van vyf oor sy wedervaringe, is redelik gesog onder versamelaars. Op die verkoping is ook M.C.E. van Schoor se Spotprente van die Anglo-Boereoorlog (1981) – ’n keur van sowat 300 spotprente van tydskrifte en koerante dwarsoor die Westerse wêreld, Leon Rousseau se Afrikaanse vertaling van Die Boere-oorlog (1981), Thomas Pakenham se gesaghebbende geskiedenis en twee titels uit die Konsentrasiekamp-gedenkreeks, uitgegee deur die Oorlogsmuseum in Bloemfontein: Die konsentrasiekampt te Bethulie gedurende die ABO (2001) en Vroueleed: die lotgevalle van vrouens en kinders buite die konsentrasiekampe (2001).

I.D. du Plessis, veelsydige skrywer en digter en kenner van die Maleise kultuur skryf in Die Maleise samelewing aan die Kaap (1939) oor hul godsdiens en gewoontes. ’n Eerste (1944) en ’n tweede uitgawe (1947) van The Cape Malays met kleur, asook swart-en-wit illustrasies is beskikbaar, asook Tales from the Malay Quarter (1981), soos deur die skrywer opgeteken en oorvertel. ’n Getekende eksemplaar van sy digbundel Land van ons vadere (1945) is ook op die verkoping.

Terwyl nostalgie die hoofrede vir die hernude gewildheid van die ou reekse Afrikaanse slapbandavonture mag wees, is daar duidelik bedrewe storievertellers aan die woord. Die Swart luiperd-reeks, uit die laat veertigs en vyftigs, is geskryf deur Braam le Roux en ná sy dood deur Meiring Fouche, skuilnaam van F.A. Venter. As Meiring Fouché maak hy ook verskeie bydraes tot die reekse Temmers van die woestyn, S.A. Polisie, Swerwerspeurder en Sahara-avontuur.

By die verkoping is ook enkele titels uit Gerrie Radlof se Olof die seerower en die Ramala-reeks. Die Africana-verkoping, wat ook ’n keur van goeie algemene nie-fiksie- en kinderboeke insluit, vind vanaf 09:00 by Bellville-biblioteek plaas.

Slegs kontantverkope is moontlik.

Boekverkoping by Betesda­mark ’n Massiewe boekverkoping word gehou by die Betesda-projek vir gestremdes se mark op Saterdag 21 Oktober by die NG kerk Durbanville-Bergsig in Bolandweg, Durbanville.

Die mark duur van 08:30 tot 14:00. Boeke en CD’s wat die afgelope maand deur die publiek en TygerBurger aan die projek geskenk is, het die voorraad aansienlik aangevul, vertel Hans Human, projekkoördineerder. “Daar is Afrikaanse en Engelse fiksieen nie-fiksieboeke – en onder meer geestelike, koffietafel-, kook-, naaldwerk-, selfhelpen kinderboeke.

“Boeke wat lankal nie meer in druk is nie en splinternuwe boeke wat onlangs gepubliseer is, sal ook verkoop word,” sê hy.

Daar is ook eetgoed soos pannekoek, wilden hoenderpasteie, soetigheid, koeldrank en koffie verkoop word.

Die projek fokus op die persoonlike behoeftes van diegene wat intellektueel, emo-

sioneel, fisiek en weens omstandighede beperk word.

Inwoners van Huis Masonic in Uitzicht in Durbanville vir persone met kwadruplegie ontvang onder meer hulp van die projek.

Ook die kinders van Yarden Children’s Enrichment Centre in Vierlanden, Durbanville met ernstige en diepgaande intellektuele en fisieke gestremdhede baat daarby.

“Die Betesda-projek se ondersteuning is egter nie beperk tot hierdie twee instansies nie. Talle mense wat ondersteun word, se identiteit word nie bekend gemaak nie om hul privaatheid te respekteer,” sê Human.

Die projek finansier ook PerdePret, ’n terapeutiese aktiwiteit met perde.

Kinders van Durbanville-kinderhuis, asook volwassenes en kinders, neem gratis aan hierdie aktiwiteit deel.

Boeke, DVD’s en CD’s kan by die kerksentrum aflaai word of sal afgehaal word.

CID deadline missed again ESMÉ ERASMUS

ith crime and social problems rife in the business centre of Durbanville, no relief is in sight after the steering committee of the City Improvement District (CID) in the Durbanville Central Business District (CBD) failed to submit its registration application before the deadline.

This is the third consecutive time the deadline has been missed. The purpose of a CID is to establish a safe business centre.

Dr Pieter Müssman resigned as chairperson and member of the steering committee after it became evident that the steering committee had once again missed the deadline for registration on 30 September.

It will now take another year before the application for a CID can be considered by the City of Cape Town.

Müssman said in his resignation letter, which was forwarded to TygerBurger, that the member who was supposed to make the necessary adjustments to last year’s application had had an entire year to do so, but had failed to do it in time.

“I am not prepared to be involved with an application in which none of the timeline goals have been achieved, despite warnings

in emails, SMS messages and cellphone messages,” he said.

The member responsible for preparing the application is not being named by TygerBurger, on Müssman’s request. When approached, she also did not want to comment on the accusations. This comes after the Durbanville CID steering committee, at a meeting of Durbanville Business in March earlier this year, was positive that the application would be submitted this year – with just a few final adjustments.

At the meeting, Derek Bock of the Voortrekker Road Corridor Improvement District (VRCID) shared their successes with business owners from Durbanville to encourage them to support the CID. In a media release by the CID steering committee, it was stated that new members had been co-opted and that a new chairperson would soon be appointed. Business owners in the CBD were encouraged to get involved with the project, which “will be to the benefit of the Durbanville community”.

“We thank Müssman for his leadership and the work he did up to now,” was stated in the media release.

Verlore ringe by opstal gevind Chanelle Booysen het verlede week breed geglimlag toe haar verlore trou- en verloofring teruggevind is.

Sy het dit ’n paar weke gelede verloor ná ’n besoek aan die Evertsdal-Opstal.

Die personeel het die opstal gefynkam toe hulle hoor dat haar ringe vermis word, maar kon dit nêrens opspoor nie.

Niemand het egter rekening gehou met die fyn oog van die tuinwerker, Gilson Banda, nie. Meer as ’n week later het Banda twee ringe in die parkeerterrein opgetel.

Twee en twee is bymekaar gesit en die personeel het dadelik besef die ringe moet aan Booysen behoort.

Die enigste probleem is dat niemand Booysen se kontakbesonderhede gehad het nie.

Local learners take the lead at Olympiad A

Grade 10 learner from Fairbairn College in Goodwood won the gold medal in the 34th South African Computer Programming Olympiad, which was held at the University of Cape Town.

Taariq Mowzer described the Mastermind question of the event as “one of the most fun questions I have done”.

Along with 12 other finalists, he spent two days writing six computer programs to solve problems.

His solution to the Mastermind problem, based on the 1972 board game, gave him the edge to win the prestigious Standard Bank Trophy and his gold medal at the awards din-

ner.

A total of 227 schools from all nine provinces participated in the first round. The initial field of 2348 participants was reduced to 478 in the second round, with only 13 reaching the finals.

Ralph McDougall, a Grade 11 learner from Curro Independent School in Durbanville, was one of two silver medal winners. One of the three bronze medals went to Emile Tredoux, a Grade 11 learner from Parklands College. Also among the finalists was Christina Mauer, a Grade 10 learner from Durbanville High School. Christina is not only the only female finalist, but also the

daughter of the 1986 gold medal winner, Gustav Mauer, a senior software development engineer at Amazon Web Services.

All the medal winners will be invited to attend training camps where they will also compete to qualify for the South African team of four to go to Japan in September 2018 for the 30th International Olympiad in Informatics.

Nicole Borges, head of investment banking technology, emphasised that Standard Bank’s investment in the Olympiad over the past 15 years shows the bank’s commitment to developing and rewarding high-level programming skills in South Africa.

rom his humble beginnings as a gardener, a trainee winemaker at Hillcrest Wine Estate has worked his way up the wine-making ladder to be named the Durbanville regional winner in the 2017 Western Cape Prestige Agri Awards competition.

Calvin Ruzvidzo, who also won the category for technical operators, will now go through to the provincial competition, which will take place in Paarl in November.

Seven years ago the 33-year-old Ruzvidzo came from Zimbabwe, where he studied electronic engineering, and started working as a gardener at the Durbanville home of Gerhard du Toit, a director at Hillcrest and former wine estate manager.

His dedication was noticed and he was offered a job at the Hillcrest wine cellar. Two years later, in November 2012, he enrolled

Ruzvidzo was over the moon after receiving the award and said it felt great to be acknowledged. “It is more than the word happy can describe – it is like a fountain of cold water on a very hot day.

The regional competition is one in a series of regional competitions that have taken

In memory of a life lived well ESME ERASMUS

T

he life of Remo Ciolli, a well-known businessman who left his mark on Durbanville, was celebrated after he recently passed away at the age of 82.

Ciolli was a councillor and mayor of Durbanville from 1984 to 1992. He passed away on 22 September and his funeral was held on 30 September at the Durbanville Catholic Church. Born in 1934 in Durban, he was the son of Italian immigrants. He grew up in Klipheuwel just outside Durbanville, where his father started a quarry. He was one of a set of twins – Remo and Romolo – named after the Italian legend of the wolf that raised two human babies. He also had two sisters.

He married Mary-Anne in the mid 1960s and moved to Durbanville, where the couple raised their four children, Catherine, Michael, David and Stephen. Ciolli worked in the family business, Ciolli Brothers, and also started a business, Remac Dance Fashion, in Durbanville. He was a keen sportsman and represented WP and SA in clay pigeon shooting. In 1973 he was the editor of what is now called Clay News. He was also the captain of the Durbanville Golf Club in 1986. Ciolli was very involved in charity work and hosted many Christmas parties for the underprivileged in Durbanville, says his stepdaughter, Erina Lehner. He got married to her mother, Mabel, in 1999.

His other interests included gems and minerals, photography, wine and wildlife.

Bellville brainiac aces Olympiad J

uanè Cronje from DF Malan High School in Bellville secured the number one spot in the Grade 12 division of the South African Institute of Professional Accountants (SAIPA) 2017 National Accounting Olympiad with a score of 92.5%.

There was very little difference in the top three scores, with Adam Melnick from Yeshiva College in Gauteng taking second place with 92%, followed by Philip Visagè from Huguenot High School in Wellington in third place with 90.5%.

Special mention also goes to Sara Seleh of Lenasia Muslim School in Gauteng who scored 90%.

“I want to thank SAIPA for investing in advancing accountancy at school level. We learnt a lot with this competition and really enjoyed it,” said Juanè after being announced the top student in this year’s competition at a gala awards evening in Johannesburg on 10 October.

This year SAIPA opened the competition to Grade 11 pupils for the first time since its inception in 2002, with Deandre de Meyer of Stellenberg High School in Bellville achieving first place with a mark of 96%, followed by Sean Scorer from Amanzimtoti High School in KwaZulu-Natal and Nabeel Fazluddin from King Edward VII School in Gauteng in joint second place with 94% each. Third place was shared by Alet Muller from Hoër Meisieskool Bloemhof in Stellenbosch and Felicia Makondo of EPP Mhinga Secondary School in Limpopo, both with a score of 92%.

Gauteng had the most schools participating in the Olympiad, accounting for 145 of the 390 schools that took part.

This year there was a marked increase in the number of schools and learners participating in the Olympiad due to a growing interest in the accountancy profession, as well as a massive awareness drive initiated

by SAIPA, says Zobuzwe Ngobese, marketing and business development executive at SAIPA. “The increase from 310 to 390 schools and 3510 to 7069 learners is quite encouraging and is also due to the fact that in 2017 we introduced the Olympiad to Grade 11 for the first time. Next year we want to reach even more schools to make the subject of accounting popular again because our economy needs more accountants in order to grow,” he says.

The competition is divided into two rounds and Grade 11 learners had to achieve a score of 60% or more to advance to the second round, while Grade 12 learners had to score 65% or more to qualify to write the second paper. The top performers received, among other things, bursaries valued at between R10 000 and R35 000 in school/university fees.

“This year the bursary is subject to the recipients pursuing studies in the accountancy profession. The main aim of the competition is to grow the numbers in the profession,” remarks Ngobese.

Ngobese notes that part of SAIPA’s future strategy is to open the Olympiad to pupils from Grade 10 to Grade 12. “If we can expose pupils as early as possible to accountancy as a profession, the more likely it is that they will choose it as their career path. Accounting is a critical skill and with Mathematics no longer being compulsory at high school, the numbers may start dwindling,” says Ngobese.

Aansoekers moet ervare wees op die gebied van assessering, opleiding en voorsiening van gepaste hulptoestelle vir die ondersteuning van postuur. Dienste wat verskaf word, moet ouerbevoegheidsopleiding insluit wat betref die neersit en oorlaai van mense wat met gestremdhede betref.

4. Bemagtiging van mans: Programme wat daarop gemik is om mans te betrek by kwessies van gendergeweld en die uitdaging van stereotipes wat geweld teen vroue en kinders versterk.

Voorstelle vir hulptoelaes moet skriftelik op ’n amptelike aansoekvorm gedoen word (beskikbaar

Aansoekers moet realisties wees wanneer hulle hul voorleggings saamstel aangesien fondse beperk is, nie alle aansoekers befondsing sal ontvang nie en die Stad nie verplig is om die hele voorstel te befonds nie.

Die volgende bedrag is vir toewysing beskikbaar: R6,8 miljoen.

Water maiden comes to life

ie Dans van die Watermeid (The Dance of the Water Maiden) by Amee Lekas will soon come to life as a full-fledged production at the Baxter Theatre Centre.

The production comes from Lekas’s debut script, which was snatched up by the Nasionale Afrikaanse Teater-inisiatief (NATi) and the Baxter Theatre for further development, from brief extracts from 14 scripts.

Die Dans van die Watermeid is a heartbreaking story set against the backdrop of the picturesque town of Willowmore in the arid Klein Karoo of Lekas’s childhood. The story offers a unique look at the people from the region, in a script that is powerful without undermining the inherent simplicity.

Lekas completed the text under the mentorship of award-winning playwright Saartjie Botha.

Throughout the process she was afforded the opportunity to delve deeper into the world of the water nymph – a mythical figure who was not only a messenger, but an integral part of the community’s history.

Furthermore, the story revolves around how the community holds onto their superstitions in spite of the influence of the church. “Only in my anxiety and frustration as an artist did I first recognise the pain of others. Purely through the grace of telling the story of Die Dans van die Watermeid

did I have the opportunity to create something from my own distress in the hope that people will become aware of the pain of those around them,” says Lekas of writing the text.

Jason Jacobs, who was recently awarded the Kunste Onbeperk award for a new voice in theatre, is the director, under the mentorship of director and CEO of the Baxter Theatre Centre, Lara Foot.

The cast includes Rehane Abrahams, Abduragman Adams, Elton Landrew, Ephraim Gordon, Gretchen Ramsden, Celeste Matthews and Deidre Jantjies, with the costumes, set and lighting being designed by award-wining designers Birrie le Roux and Patrick Curtis. The production’s run will coincide with the second Teksmark of Kunste Onbeperk, supported by NATi and the Baxter Theatre.

ie pennevrug van ’n digter van Durbanville is opgeneem in die boek Riglyne vir amateurskrywers deur Ernie Mellet, wat onlangs uitgegee is.

Corrie Laubscher is nie min trots daarop dat twee van haar gedigte in die boek verskyn. Dit is haar gedigte “Kleintyd onthou” en “Vir jou Marianne”.

Die handleiding bevat 300 bladsye en doen sy naam gestand met handige wenke en ’n gids vir grondslagskrywers en digters.

Mellet van Suurbraak, self ’n romanskrywer en dramaturg, is die stigter en hoofraadgewer van die Amateurskrywersbond, ’n niewinsgewende organisasie wat skrywers en digters in alle soorte Afrikaans gratis bystaan met redigering, kommentaar, raad en wenke.

“Boeke soos Riglyne vir ama-

teurskrywers is vir beginners en dit gee aan amateurskrywers die geleentheid om hul werk in skrif te sien.

“Jy sit hierdie boek nie maklik neer nie. Dit bied jou soveel en nog meer ... en daar is altyd iets nuuts om te leer,” het Laubscher gesê.

“Deur die jare het Mellet bly glo in opkomende skrywers en baie van ons se beste werke – hetsy sketse, gedigte of verhale – het nou ’n goeie lêplek in sy boek gevind.

Get creative with containers A fun competition in which gardeners can compete with their creative gardening containers is being presented by the Durbanville Garden Club.

With the theme “Think out of the box”, competitors can upcycle any old container into a prize-winning container. Think small – it must fit into a space no larger than 400 x 400 x 400mm.

The club is encouraging young and old in the northern suburbs who are interested in gardening to enter this fun competition.

“In these difficult drought times, we hope to keep gardening alive and encourage everyone to use their creative imagination to garden with a fun container, which can be

anything except a pot,” says Barbara Smith, chairperson of the Durbanville Garden Club.

The categories are: Succulents; Fairy Garden; Herbs and Vegetables; and Anything Goes! There is also a special category for under 12s to encourage the gardeners of the future.

Entry is free and there are prizes of garden goodies worth R6000 up for grabs.

The closing date for entries is 8 November.

Display and judging will take place on 18 November in the Durbanville Library hall.

ie Hoër Tegniese Skool Bellville in Labiance se o.19-rugbyspan, bekend as die Drake, is druk besig om span te bou ter voorbereiding van die 2018-seisoen.

Die Drake het die Helderstroom-gevangenis naby Caledon gedurende die eerste naweek van die Septembervakansie besoek as deel van hul voorseisoense voorbereiding.

Tydens die spanbousessie het die spelers en afrigters nuwe doelwitte vir die komende seisoen uiteengesit.

Volgense Liezl du Plessis, woordvoerder van HTS Bellville, was die spanbou inspirerend vir almal betrokke en is ’n goeie grond-

slag gelê vir die maande wat voorlê.

“Ons skool volg ook die sewe gewoontes van hoogs effektiewe mense en gewoonte een is om pro-aktief te wees. Daarom het die spelers die naweek weggebreek om hul rugbyplanne vir volgende jaar nou al in plek te kry,” het sy gesê. Die spelers het nie ’n spesifieke oefenprogram gevolg nie, maar dit was ’n kombinasie van verskeie aktiwiteite.

Onder die wakende oog van Esmund van Wyk, afrigter en sportbestuurder by HTS, het die spanbou gefokus op geestelike en fisieke ontwikkeling. Die spelers moes geestelik, fisiek en intellektueel gesonde rugbyspelers wees wanneer hulle volgende seisoen met die rugbykompetisie begin,” het sy gesê.

Club plays in cricket festival: The Bellville Cricket Club’s u.11 team took part in the

2017 Knysna Cricket Festival during the October school holidays. Seventy schools from across SA participated in the festival. On day one, the Bellville team played against St Andrew’s Prep A. On day two their rivals were SWCC Wizards and on day three they came up against Plettenberg Bay Primary. The youngsters were fortunate to have Allison Johnson as their coach. Johnson, a seam bowler, played for Barbados and Western Province before retiring. Back from left are Jaime Hartle, Liam Burger, Keanu Bekker, coach Allison Johnson, Colby Meade and Rico van Zyl. In front are Rudi Mouton, Tristan Sinclair, Josh Jordaan, Tian Potgieter and Bruce Petersen. The boys attend Bastion, Boston and Bellpark primary schools.

Cancer Challenge raises cash The Sanlam Cancer Challenge golf finals were held on 9 and 10 October at Sun City. ygerberg-klub het weliswaar die afgelope Saterdag naelskraap in die stof gebyt in die kwarteindronde van die landwye Goue Beker-rugbykompetisie.

Maar die Floridaparkspan se ondersteuners het net lof vir hul span.

Tygerberg, wat op spesiale uitnodiging by dié kompetisie vir die voorste nie-universi-

têre klubspanne in die land betrek is, was met sy oorwinning van 29-7 voorverlede naweek oor Oos-Londen se Old Selbornians drie keer in vier ligawedstryde aan die wenkant. Dit het hom die afgelope naweek ’n tuis-kwarteindstryd teen College Rovers (Durban) besorg. Dit was so hittete of die Tiere het hulle in die halfeindronde bevind.

Maar dit was die twee sagte drieë wat die ietwat oorgeruste tuisspan teen die Durba-

niete afgestaan het, wat uiteindelik deurslaggewend was in die besoekers se oorwinning met 27-23.

“Daarby het ons manne as gevolg van verspeelde kanse onnodige kwaai druk op hulself geplaas,” sê Kevin Kiewitz, die Tygerbergers se voorsitter.

“Ons kon die wedstryd gewen het as dit nie ’n geval was dat ons deurentyd inhaalrugby moes speel nie. Tog voel ons gelukkig oor die

Renostertjies onoorwonne in Brittanje Elf wedstryde gespeel en 11 keer gewen.

Dít vertel die suksesverhaal van die Renostertjies, ’n o.19-rugbyspan wat jaarliks saamgestel word uit skole wat in die Aprilskoolvakansie deelneem aan die Tony Stoops-rugbyweek in Brackenfell.

Nadat die Renostertjies die vorige twee jaar ook onoorwonne teruggekeer het van hul kort besoeke aan Ierland en Argentinië, het hulle hierdie keer ook al ses hul wed-

waardevolle ondervinding wat die Tiere die afgelope paar weke in hierdie kompetisie opgedoen het,” verklaar Kiewitz.

Die WP sal darem wel in die halfeindronde verteenwoordig wees. Valsbaai het voorverlede naweek sy onoorwonne status behou deur College Rovers met 19-16 te klop.

Saterdag in die kwarteindronde was die Kapenaars met 37-13 gans te sterk vir Progress (George).
