Festive fun in a fire engine Shayne Tennant (4) from Durbanville had fun exploring the inside of a fire engine of the Kraaifontein Fire Department at a Christmas party recently. The party was hosted by Uitzicht Neighbourhood Watch in Joostenberg Vlakte to raise funds towards a computer server for its security camera project. Full article on page 2. PHOTO: CLAIRE LÖTTER

isantekraal Animal Welfare (FAW) has launched a project in the Klipheuwel informal settlement in collaboration with Tygerberg Animal Hospital (TAH) to perform mass sterilisations. Project Klipheuwel Animals was launched last week and has been endorsed by ward 105 of the City of Cape Town. The project received a grants-in-aid ward allocation of R80 000 for the 2017/2018 financial year. The project is planning a mass sterilisation initiative with the aim to sterilise at least 100 dogs and cats in the informal settlement. The mass sterilisation will take place from 4 to 6 December, says Jenni Davies, spokesperson for FAW. It will take place in the church in the informal settlement. “Klipheuwel is an impoverished community of some 200 houses and around 900 informal structures. “Along with the people, an estimated 1 500 or more dogs and cats call this area home. “Unfortunately there is a major problem with animal overpopulation in Klipheuwel – with sickness, neglect, abuse, and suffering increasing as a result. “Due to the poverty, people simply lack the resources to sterilise and vaccinate their pets; many also breed their dogs in order to make money,” Davies says. “FAW has been helping the animals of Fisantekraal township and surrounds for over a decade. The organisation saw the need for help with the animals in this area and have taken it under their wing – sterilising and vaccinating where possible, treating inju-

ries and illnesses when needed and, importantly, educating and empowering residents to care for their companion animals,” she says. The idea started when FAW collaborated with TAH to vaccinate 130 animals against rabies on 5 October this year. “However, much more is needed to really get the situation under control. The best way to reduce animal neglect, abuse and suffering is to reduce overpopulation through the sterilisation of animals. “One sterilisation costs R450 per animal and to achieve this phenomenal goal, we aim to raise R45 000 by 30 November,” she says. “Businesses are challenging each other to ‘sponsor a steri’ and many individuals are sponsoring on someone’s behalf as a Christmas gift for the person who has everything,” Davies says. “If only 450 people donate R100, this goal can easily be reached,” she says. Certificates of acknowledgement are available for sponsors. Individuals can donate via the online donation portal at backabuddy.co.za or directly to the FAW. The R80 000 ward allocation granted to FAW by the ward 105 councillor, Ruan Beneke, was mostly spent on sterilisation equipment. This includes an anaesthetic machine, concentrator and oxygen (R35 000); surgical supplies such as drips, syringes, needles, catheters, bandages and carcass disposal bags (R22 000); recovery cages (R8 000); disinfectant, surgical scrubs and instrument sterilisation (R5 000); a stainless steel operating table (R3 000); surgical instruments (R3 000) and safe drug storage (R3 500).
