WATERBOK CRESCENT: RESIDENTS UP IN ARMS ABOUT CARS

‘Traffic crisis’ in crescent ESMÉ ERASMUS

esidents of Waterbok Crescent in Goedemoed are fed up about the “traffic crisis” in their quiet street, which is being created by motorists and taxi drivers – some aggressive and using foul language – while rat-racing through the area during the morning peak hour. The issue was discussed by Theresa Uys, councillor for ward 112, and other councillors at the monthly meeting of subcouncil 7 this past Monday, although it was not an item on the agenda. Motorists use the quiet crescent between 07:00 and 07:45 as a short cut – causing such a high volume of traffic that the residents cannot pull out of their own driveways. According to irritated residents, they get sworn at by people and endure indecent gestures, hooting and more as they try to get out of their driveways. “Cars, bakkies and taxis enter the crescent at quite a speed and then accelerate through the crescent at breakneck speed. All of this to maybe jump four cars at most in the queue. It is a catastrophe waiting to happen,” one resident told TygerBurger. “Cars and taxis use the crescent to shortcut the two stop streets in Hartebees Road. Cars and trailers even tried to overtake my husband once on the verge of the park while he was trying to reverse his trailer,” said another resident. Speeding taxi drivers also pass cars in oncoming lanes in Hartebees Street and Waterbok Crescent to push their way in.

All of this at top speed of course. Most vehicles at this time of day are filled with children being driven to school. “All the suburb’s roads are a mess and becoming dangerous during peak times, as people take irresponsible chances to ‘beat the queue’. “The amount of development of new housing in our area far surpasses the road infrastructure and it is high time this ratio is looked at and addressed before even more development is approved,” another resident said. Their predicament dates back over eight years of dramatic residential development north of Durbanville – including Goedemoed, Graanendal, Sonstraal and Uitzicht, said Rian Hancke, one of the aggrieved residents. “These property developments were approved by local government without taking into consideration what effect the traffic will have on the infrastructure of Waterbok Crescent and surrounding streets. “The residents are further angered because they feel the local councillor, Uys, ignores their fate and does not come back to them,” said Hancke. However, Uys told TygerBurger that she has great empathy with the residents. “The administrative process had to be followed in terms of the policy requirements. It was decided at our last subcouncil meeting on 20 November that a traffic count cannot be done during the school holidays or during off-peak hours, which delayed the application. “Operations were conducted between 30 January and 5 February,” she said.
