A job centre was launched last week at the taxi rank in New Street in Durbanville by the Fisantekraal Centre for Development (FCD). The job centre is situated in the training centre of FCD in the facebrick building in the parking area
at the taxi rank. The centre not only offers affordable training, but also tries to assist people in finding and keeping jobs. Since its opening in September last year, 200 students have already been trained at the FCD, of which 70 percent are women. More than half – about 55 percent – of these students, all previously unemployed, are now employed.
At the launch a video with success stories of students that are now employed, was shared. The courses presented include life skills training, basic computer skills training, entrepreneurship and business skills, office administration and driver licence training. All 200 students completed a compulsory life skills course. Of these students 108 then completed the ba-

sic computer course, 41 the advanced computer course, 29 the office administration course and 12 the business achievers course. “But, we want to increase employment to 80 percent,” Jonathan Aspeling, a board member of FCD, said at the launch. “For this we need partners and assistance. We are looking for opportunities for jobs,” he said.
“Businesses must put the FCD on their mailing lists so that they can assist with learnerships. “We are also looking for partners for job shadowing so that our students can experience what it’s like to be in a real job environment,” he said. “We are giving these students more than just an income. Being employed affirms them as a person in their family and in their community,” he said. These students need employment in driving, gardening, painting, at call centres, as administration or restaurant staff, in maintenance work, and as domestic and educare workers. Grant Hopkins, chairperson of the FCD, said the role of the job centre is to link students with employers, source jobs for students, assist them with their CVs, interviews and job shadowing and also to start projects to create work opportunities. Hopkins applauded the staff at the FCD and said “they come to work with their hearts and are committed to help the students”. The FCD hopes to open another training centre in Fisantekraal soon, Hopkins said. The FCD, which is registered as a non-profit organisation, was established during 2010 by churches and community organisations in Durbanville and is an affiliate of Learn to Earn. The training centre started at the beginning of 2010 already to present training, while the job centre was started in September last year. According to Marguerite Potgieter, co-ordinator of training, they waited until now for the launch to make sure everything was running smoothly and that they had enough trained students on their lists. .
