) ‘Unbelievable what people flush’

Residents blamed for sewage ESMÉ ERASMUS

Residents of D’Urbanvale are to blame for the latest sewage spill in the Uitkamp wetland. Some have been flushing foreign objects such as babies’ nappies down their toilets, with dire consequences. Spillages have occurred frequently in the wetland area up until about a year or two ago, usually associated with first heavy winter rains and caused by stormwater that gains access to the sewerage system. Sewage spills encourage unwanted vegetation such as Kikuyu grass and Typha (bulrush) to flourish. It also has a major negative impact on the upper reaches of the Mosselbank River water course ecology. Mike Yoell, chairperson of the Uitkamp Action Group, said it is frustrating to continue to suffer sewage spills in the wetland nature reserve. “This is especially so, after the City of Cape Town’s reticulation branch for water and sanitation utility services spent over a million rand in 2010 and 2011 to assess the conditions of the main pipes beneath the Uitkamp wetland. “The pipes are in good shape and

Michael and Karen Hodges from D’Urbanvale are taking their dogs, Rusty and Molly, for a walk on the new boardwalk that was recently built in the Uitkamp wetlands by the roving team Biodiversity Management Group (BMG) of the City of Cape Town. The cost was mainly funded by the Uitkamp Action Group. “So it is the people living in the higher lying areas around D’Urbanvale that are responsible for the latest spillage. “It is unbelievable what households are prepared to flush out of their ‘backyard’ into someone else’s,” Yoell said. He appealed on behalf of the residents of D’Urbanvale and the ecology of the Uitkamp wetland “that everyone will behave responsibly in seeing that each and every member of the household will use the toi-

let for which it was designed and not as a general waste trap and disposal bin”. The sewage spill occurred in the wetland reserve in the main pipeline just outside the Meerenbosch Retirement Village, as well as below the lower fence line that borders this community property. “Multiple reports to the authorities did finally succeed in having the blockages cleared, but not before the wetland environment was scarred, yet again, with many cubic

metres of unsavoury water,” Yoell said. He appealed to residents to “do their bit to preserve the Uitkamp wetlands and save the costs that are incurred in cleaning up the mess that poor discipline and domestic behaviour can cause.” The group was formed to assist the Biodiversity Management Group (BMG) of the City of Cape Town. People who want to contribute to the Uitkamp Action Group can phone Yoell on 073 148 9478.
