Volunteers pack 402 000 meals for Mandela Day

Thousands of volunteers and staff members of Pick n Pay branches from Brackenfell, Parow, Tyger Valley Centre, Goodwood and the rest of the Peninsula participated in the 2019 FoodForwardSA Mandela Day Food Drive on Thursday 18 July. The Drive was held in partnership with Pick n Pay at the Cape Town International Convention Centre and more than 402 000 meals were packed. Through Pick n Pay’s efforts and the thousands of individuals who donated generously in stores, 90 tonnes of food was weighed and sorted at midday on the Friday 18 July at the six Mandela Day packing events across the country. Throughout the week leading up to Mandela Day donations were collected from the 550 Pick n Pay stores participating in the food drive. At the CTICC were volunteers and they are from left: Astrid Samuels, Simone Manuel, Elroy Arendse, Silke Colguhoun, Michelle Ford and Tamsin Mckeown.

etails are sketchy about how a Grade 12 learner from Silversands High School were killed, but it is becoming clearer that he reached a gruesome end.

The bodies of Ronaldo Davids (17) and an unknown person were found in a field close to Happy Valley, Blackheath. According to sources from the community, it seems as if Davids and his friend were severely beaten before their bodies were set alight.

Mfuleni police spokesperson confirmed the death of the two. “A murder case docket was registered for investigation purposes after the burned bodies of two people were found in an open field. The circumstances surrounding the death of the two people is still unclear. “He was also a bit naughty, but did not deserve to die this way,” the source says.

It has also emerged that Ronaldo and his friend were accused of robbing someone from his phone. This could not be confirmed.

A

fter her 16-year-old son was hospitalised around 10 years ago, Benita Niemann set out to investigate the benefits of a mineral few acknowledge as important. Magnesium, she would come to realise, is one of the most important minerals in your body.

“As a single mother of three, I basically lost everything because of medical bills. My son ended up in ICU. He was a flatline. At that time, my total hospital bill came to R200 000. It bankrupted me,” says Niemann, founder of Magnesium Café.

“My son had liver damage and the doctors said they could not give him any medication because it was too strong for his liver. They pulled him through with a Panado drip and prayer.”

Following her son’s ordeal and recovery, Niemann started researching magnesium and founded Magnesium Café. She had sold other products before finding Doctor Frank Muller who assisted her in developing Mag1, a magnesium mineral supplement, designed for maximum absorption into the body.

Magnesium plays a role in more than 350 enzymatic processes in the body, which include the metabolism of food, synthesis of fatty acids and proteins, and the transmission of nerve impulses.

The human body contains around 25g of magnesium, of which most is stored in the skeletal system. The rest is present in muscle, soft tissues, and bodily fluids.

The company was founded in October 2017 and is based in Tyger Valley.

“Medical bills destroyed me and I realised there must be something more and that is when I started with magnesium. I worked for a medical aid company and I would see how medical funds were depleted quickly, especially with athletes,” she says.

“Athletes would go back and forth to doctors and never recover. It was like the more

tablets they get, the sicker they get. After researching the magnesium, I thought that if I could educate children about living a healthier life, then they could put bread on the table,” she says.

Knowing the restorative benefits of magnesium, Niemann started sponsoring athletes, who saw a remarkable increase in healing and reduced durations of sport-related injuries.

Niemann says many of the children they now work with have lost either one or both parents and end up becoming the breadwinners in their households.

This results in them not looking after their bodies. Niemann believes that assisting in improving their health, it assists them in putting bread on the table, through prize money or sponsorships for young talent.

The recent addition to their athletes and ambassadors is also Paralympic athlete Hylton Langenhoven, who is using and endorsing the benefits of the product leading up to the upcoming Paralympic Games.

“The product is a tool. With every product that is bought, it makes it possible for us to sponsor an athlete. There are so many athletes who need support,” she says.

This is sometimes financial support to assist in getting young athletes to training camps or access to sessions where they can be scouted. The company had recent such success with a young athlete being sponsored to a training camp and running himself into a scholarship.

The athletes are from all over the country and all use the product to assist them in improving their performance and healing.

“I wanted to start a non-profit organisation (NPO), but recently joined up with an existing NPO, the Hendrick Ramaala Sports Foundation. They heard about me sponsor-

“We are hoping companies will get involved through our NPO partnership and that people will get involved because these athletes need a lot of support.”

South Africans did not mind the cold weather and did their best to make life better for those around them.

The Community Women Action organisation celebrated Mandela Day in conjunction with the Arthritis Foundation and different senior clubs around Eerste River. Attendees did exercises and were informed about arthritis and how to cope with it.

Early academic intervention is important F

orest Village Leadership Academy teamed up with Beyond the Edge Tutoring and Radio Tygerberg to highlight the importance of early academic intervention and parent support.

For the past three years, Forest Village has hosted termly parent meetings where teachers and parents discuss specific issues around supporting learners who are experiencing difficulty with the academic programme.

“Many learners are easily able to overcome their barriers to learning with early identification and the correct recommendations for support. The challenge, however, was that more often than not, our children had to travel to reading or maths centres in Somerset West, Kuilsriver or Bellville if they needed additional support for maths or English,” says Wendy Philander, school principal.

Title deeds issued in Blue Downs T

he Western Cape Human Settlements minister, Tertius Simmers, handed over 52 title deeds to residents of Blue Downs.

The title deed handover has been made possible through the Department’s Enhanced Extended Discounted Benefit Scheme (EEDBS), which promotes home ownership of pre-1994 government-owned rental housing. The particular handover that took place on Tuesday 16 July also forms part of the department’s strategic goal to prioritise the elderly for housing opportunities in the Western Cape.

“I share tears of joy with the 52 recipients of these title deeds. The event allowed us to ensure that more than 50 people become fully-fledged, legal homeowners. The hand over is yet another clear demonstration of the Western Cape Government’s commitment to restoring dignity and creating a better life for the people of this province.

“We are also ensuring that our residents have a sense of security and pride in having full ownership of their properties. I was honoured to share in the joy of a momentous occasion in the lives of these beneficiaries,” says Simmers.

The 52 beneficiaries hail from Electric City, Malibu Village, Tuscany Glen, the Conifers, Hillcrest Heights and Eerste River. Residents were able to benefit through the EEDBS programme, as the sale agreements with debtors, who did not honour their agreements, were cancelled. Properties were thus sold to the qualifying current occupants and, where this was not possible, debt write-off was implemented to assist beneficiaries.

“I feel very happy and I would like to thank the minister for giving me my title deed. I will never forget this day, as this is truly a special day and this property is for me and my family,” commented an emotional 82-year-old Magdalene Newman.

“We’re currently working on phase 2 of the Blue Downs title deed project, which means that more people will, in the not so distant future, become fully-fledged homeowners. As the Western Cape Government, we will continue striving towards establishing an enabling environment, so that we are better placed to grant beneficiaries security of tenure and make more residents legal homeowners by handing over these title deeds,” added Simmers.

Joining hands for needy children More than 700 volunteers from across Cape Town flocked to GrandWest to pack meals for children from underprivileged communities in commemoration of 67-minutes for Mandela on Thursday 18 July.

The food packing drive was part of a nationwide effort between Sun International and Rise Against Hunger to mark International Mandela Day. Three packing sessions were held during the day and more than 250 000 food parcels were packed.

The meals are highly nutritious and com-

prise rice, soya, dehydrated vegetable mix and a fortification pack of 23 essential minerals and vitamins specifically formulated to combat malnutrition (complying with the UNICEF standard).

Sun International’s social economic development specialist, Heidi Edson said: “We called on representatives from local businesses, government representatives and other like-minded stakeholders to join us for 67 minutes on Mandela Day where we joined hands to pack food parcels for the most vulnerable in our society, needy young chil-

dren.”

She says school feeding programmes can help prevent hunger, increase school enrolment, reduce absenteeism and improve learning outcomes.

“Mandela Day is dedicated to Nelson Mandela’s life and work and aims to inspire people to embrace the values that he shared so that all of us can help change the world for the better. We feel privileged to have been a part of this meaningful initiative which has tremendous and far reaching impact,” said Edson.

Protect birth certificate BRENDEN RUITER @ruitervaniewind The police in Kleinvlei has urged people who have knowledge of a man going around requesting the birth certificate of children to come forward.

According to Captain Florina Muller, police spokesperson, an unknown man recently visited the house of a woman with an underage child requesting the child’s birth certificate.

“The coloured male, around 50 years of age, came to the house in Pine Place and asked to see Lezaan Rossouw (the mother of the child). Lezaan was at work and her sister Roxanne, who stood on the balcony of the house spoke to the man.

“She initially thought the man was there to fix the washing machine, but

when she asked him he said that he was the grandfather of the three-year-old boy. Roxanne Rossouw immediately suspected that something is wrong because her father passed away and she knew the child’s other grandfather. He claimed that he was sent by social workers to fetch the birth certificate and the child’s clinic card,” says Muller.

When Roxanne said she doesn’t know him and threatened to call the police the man left.

“This is a very strange situation and at this stage, we do not know what to make of it. We urge parents to protect their children and have safety plans because we do not know what the intention of the man was,” says Muller.

She urged anyone who encountered the same man to contact the police.

Skrywer van Kleinvlei bring jeugroman uit BRENDEN RUITER @ruitervaniewind

A

l woon jy in Kleinvlei kan jy steeds ’n gepubliseerde skrywer word.

Dít is die boodskap wat die skrywer Christo Meyer wil tuisbring met sy eerste jeugroman, Puntemasjien, wat eersdaags by Naledi-uitgewers verskyn. Meyer se vorige boek, die kortverhaalbundel, Man in die nag, het hy in 2015 self uitgegee.

Volgens Meyer, wat deur die dag vir ’n sekerheidsmaatskappy werk en saans skryf, het die uitreiking van sy roman hom aan die woorde van een van sy onderwysers laat dink: “’n Kind sonder ’n droom is ’n kind sonder ’n toekoms.” Hierdie woorde het by hom bly vassteek en hy het dit oral saam met hom gedra. “Ek het aanvanklik gedroom om ’n sanger te word en het ook vir verskeie oudisies gegaan. Daar was die geleentheid om

op seiljagte in Spanje te gaan sing, maar die een ou in ons groep het destyds kop uitgetrek en ons moes bly. Ek het daardie droom laat vaar,” sê Meyer.

Oor die jare het hy elke nou en dan ’n kortverhaal na tydskrifte gestuur en as dit afgekeur word het hy eers weer ná nege maande sy hand aan skryfwerk gewaag. In 2011 het hy besluit om ernstig te begin skryf. “Verskeie uitgewers het my werke afgekeur, maar ek het net aanhou skryf want ek weet ek het talent. Die gevoel toe ek die boek ’n paar dae gelede vir die eerste keer in my hand hou, was onbeskryflik. Ek was na aan trane. Ek is dankbaar vir Naledi-uitgewers wat my talent raakgesien het en besluit het om die pad saam met my te stap. As ek enige raad aan voornemende skrywers kan gee is dit om nooit hoop te verloor as een uitgewer nie jou werk vir publikasie aanvaar nie. Dit is belangrik om ’n tweede of derde opinie te

kry. Ek is ’n bewys van ‘third time lucky’,” sê hy.

Baie mense het hom geïnspireer om die boek te skryf, maar dit was toe Eldridge Jason, inhoudsredakteur van die Son-koerant, debuteer met sy jeugroman Gerook wat Meyer besluit het hy wil in Jason se voetspore volg.

Puntemasjien gaan oor ’n seun met ’n droom en ’n talent van rugby. “Eintlik gaan die boek oor laaities soos ek wat op skool rugby gespeel het. Ek dink ek het net gespeel omdat daar 15 spelers op die veld moes wees, maar daar was ouens wat regtig talent gehad het. Omstandighede het hul lewens verkeerde draaie laat loop. Julle sal die boek moet koop om uit te vind of dieselfde met die hoofkarakter gaan gebeur,” sê hy.

‘Vusi the Worm’ teaches values and life skills LISA LOTTERING @demi_lisa

T

he Learn2Live organisation launched its new children’s book series, Vusi the Worm on Thursday 18 July at Oakhill.

The book is a series of eight books focused on life skills development and covers the following themes in the curriculum: something new, one of a kind, care for your body, safe place, say no, sharing, being brave and dream big.

The series is targeted for the 0 to 5 years age group and was created as a learning aid for under-resourced crèches in the surrounding informal settlements, including Fisantekraal, Wallacedene, Bloekombos and Eerste River.

Alani Nel (36), the writer and illustrator, says she had a dream of creating the book when she was 19-years-old. Nel says she had a very short time to do a lot of work, something she had in her heart for a very long time.

The Durbanville resident says this book was created to teach children valuable life lessons. “Vusi is a tool to unlock something in every child,” says Nel. With the book she hopes to inspire young and old to dream big and have the courage to go after what they want. “I wanted to introduce Vusi to learners so they can find something to live their best lives despite their current circumstances,” she adds.

“When I wrote the book, I wrote it for ev-

ery individual. I think all of us need to learn the life skills part and it’s wonderful that I had a small role to play but the teachers are the ones who must go out and teach the children.”

Arina Kitching, director of the organisation, says Vusi the Worm is significant because it provides stories of hope and it’s time to give our children hope.

“All our children in our communities must have hope and we are the carriers of that hope. We can’t expect kids to have hope if we don’t.”

Kitching says it takes a village to raise a child and the teachers are that village.

“Sometimes we are the only community or safe place a child has and that is why we are doing this. We can’t let children dream if we cannot dream ourselves,” says Kitching.

She says the book is about having a practical skill to inspire children and the organisation did this for the communities.

“The heart of this book is for the Wallacedene children to know they are special; That the children in Kuils River know that they have a safe space; for the children in Kraaifontein to know that they are unique and that children in Mfuleni know that they can say no to abuse. It is for children in Bloekombos to know that they must look after their bodies; that children in Fisantekraal know that they can share; that children of Mbekweni can be brave and that children of Eerste River can dream big. This is for all of us,” Kitching concluded.

CrossFit athlete Michelle Merand from Brackenfell is one of only four South Africans to qualify for the international CrossFit Games that takes place between 1 and 4 August in Madison Wisconsin in the United States of America (USA).

As a relatively new sport in South Africa, CrossFit is a sporting discipline that tests your fitness in various codes that combine gymnastics, weight lifting, cardio and various other bodyweight movements, she explains.

Merand says the CrossFit Games is the highest level you can reach in this sport, that was founded in South Africa in 2006.

“I’m very excited and somewhat overwhelmed that I qualified. It happened sooner than I anticipated.”

She qualified by getting the fifth place at an overall fitness event held at Green Point Stadium in February this year.

She started doing CrossFit in 2015.

“I realised that I wasn’t living the best of lifestyles and wanted to change that by getting fit. As it happened a new CrossFit gym opened across the road from where I live. I joined and the rest is history,” says Merand.

She trains five times a day for 90 minutes.

“Classes consists of only 12 people per class that is coached through various movements and techniques.”

“When I started, I was fairly skinny and now boast a sculptured and more muscular and toned body. What I love most about the sport is to see how far I can push my body and the nice thing about the classes is the variety of exercises.

You never do the same thing twice.”

The 30-year-old says her expectations for the Games is to have as much fun as possible.

“I want to soak up every moment and enjoy the experience one day at a time,” says Merand.

When life gives you lemons, make a salad “When life gives you lemons, make lemonade”.

Well, whoever came up with that saying, clearly hasn’t really had to deal with the sour, yellow fruits which really can get on your last nerve (literally the reason you pull your face and the muscle behind your jaw contracts).

Lemons have a variety of uses, and that means you don’t only need to conform to “lemonade”. As if to use this as a metaphor on gender and social norms, I beg to suggest you make a citrus-infused salad or a lemon meringue pie.

We are meant to be living in times where gender fluidity, sexuality and women empowerment are accepted as the norm. Where it is okay to not be lemonade. Maybe it’s just me, but I am reminded all too often that while we have had 25 years, we need another before we make a lasting change.

At the weekend, in conversation with a complete, maybe slightly intoxicated man, I was reminded of just how much society has remained the same.

While we assume men and their gender ideals and/or expectations of women in the modern world have moved with the – lets say century – I was suprised, just how much race, culture, religion and gender still play a role in the construction of supposed roles and responsibilities of women, especially as it was pointed out to me, women like me – a young, unmarried, woman of colour who is building a career.

I may seem backwards in even saying this, but it was mentioned to me on several occasions. And with two consecutive words, my hope that we had moved on to a new world were disproved. “Your people” – repeated several times, in a variety of contexts.

This followed by: “I have nothing against your people, my son’s girlfriend has a lot of friends who are coloured and they all hang out together.”

Further followed by stereotype, one after another. As if my parents did not work hard to give me an opportunity in life, where my career successes and education were not good enough.

While I am not quick to take offence, in hindsight, I guess I maybe should have.

As if to say I should only care about the wellbeing of people like me.

Someone of my race, my culture, subscribes to my religious views – “my people”.

While the colour of my skin may be darker than yours, or lighter than yours for that matter, my race remains “South African” and if you live here, you are “my people”.

Does that make me naive? Is the purity of my youth clouding my better judgement? Or is this one person a reflection of the South Africa I thought we moved away from. Is this person the South African that still very obviously exists in hopefully small, remote groups.

I am a proud patriot. And if you are too, you wouldn’t conform to racism, sexism or anything else that makes you see anyone even slightly different than you as less of a person.

Will we ever come to a point where the way we look does not count? Where when we have those lemons, we make a socially acceptable tart? Or are we conforming to the ideals of centuries ago, where if you did not make lemonade, you were not good enough? – Samantha Lee

Be tolerant on our roads In response to the letter of “Biker and car owner” in TygerBurger on 7 July regarding bad motorists (“You know who you are ...”), you need to bear in mind that you need to give respect in order to earn it.

I had a situation a few weeks back on Hospital Bend coming from Cape Town in peak hour traffic when I had to change lanes and proceeded to do so in the appropriate manner. A biker approached from my left side and by the time he was close to my car he realised the gap wasn’t big enough for him to go past, he then came around the other side and abruptly stopped on the driver’s side and violently broke my side mirror using his forearm. It was the most disgusting thing I have ever experienced in my 25 years of travelling to and from work.

Normal societal expectations will be that I should hold a grudge against this biker or bikers in general, but I don’t, I still drive the same way I have for 25 years, giving gaps where asked for, and making way for bikers to go pass.

I will not let one idiotic act of madness change my ways.

Let’s focus on the majority of good drivers and bikers and discard the bad ones.

Bikers should stick to speed limit I would like to comment on the letter “You know who you are ...” in TygerBurger of 17 July.

I do not own a motorcycle and I’m not jealous of not owning one.

I do agree with a lot of things which “Biker and car owner” mentions. Besides that I do own a fast car I would never dream of closing a gap when I see a biker coming.

But I do think a lot of bikers play with their and other people’s lives.

Do they think speed limits are for everybody else but not for them?

When we drive on the N1 to Cape Town at a speed of 120km/ph I often get a fright at how fast the bikes race past us.

Also, when I see them changing the lanes between the cars with high speed the hair in my neck stands up.

Yes, you do have the right to use the road but use the road at a reasonable speed, then there would also be less dead bikers.

Reward people for supporting green I read articles and watch TV shows which shows the damage caused by plastic. Yet, plastic is still sold every day.

What a proactive government would do is tax soft drink manufacturers heavier on plastic bottles than on glass, tax supermarkets heavier on plastic bags than on paper bags (especially if the bags are made from recycled paper), and all other manufacturers that insist on plastic.

The specials that leading retail stores advertise that are printed on glossy paper should be taxed higher than those utilising newspaper.

In an email to the DA I once suggested a reward system on vehicle licences for people who make use of lift clubs which is proactive towards carbon emissions and lightens the load on already

strained roads at peak times.

It was met with a reply that no government rewards people for doing the right thing, but do punish people for breaking the law. This is absolute hogwash and shows that there is no urgency to save our planet or improve our lifestyle.

Government should become proactive with a plastic tax payable by the manufacturers and not the end-user who has no alternative but to purchase the various plastics.

How about a farm where the homeless can live and grow and raise their own food? Sometimes it only takes the restoring of a person’s pride to help him get a leg up in life.

In Europe, governments offer incentives for people installing solar at their homes or purchasing electric or hybrid motor vehicles. In our city, if you install solar at your home you need to register and even pay for the new electricity meter that needs to be installed.

What will it take to get leadership to take action and work with the citizens instead of against the citizens that believed in them and voted for them?

Nadat ek die brief gelees het, wou ek nes die skrywer gal braak, maar vir die teenoorgestelde redes.

Dit is duidelik dat motorfietse geen ag slaan op die reg van motors in hul onderskeie bane nie. Dit vergelyk met die taxi’s wat ook glo dat hulle die reg van toegang tot enige baan, enige tyd het – vandaar die chaos en ongelukke vroegoggend of laatmiddag op ons snelweë.

Dit wil voorkom asof die motorfietsryers ’n onsigbare baan vir hulself opeis, veral tussen die middelste en regterbaan. Hulle ry tot in sarsies van vyf motorfietse op ’n keer tussen motors deur.

Die jongste is met geel noodflikkerligte aan om sodoende hul stempel van outoriteit bo dié van motoriste op die pad af te druk.

Miskien moet jul motorfietsryers net so nou en dan tog maar jul motors uittrek en werk toe ry. Dit sal julle daaraan herinner dat dit moeilik is om 07:00 in die oggend in die donker en reën op die pad te wees.

Motorfietsbestuurders moet aanvaar daar is risiko’s aan verbonde. As só ’n bestuurder op gruis of ’n nat pad gly en val of tussen motors vasgedruk word, moet jy weet jy gaan seerkry – juis omdat jy nie dieselfde beskerming het as in ’n motorvoertuig nie.

Is ek jaloers omdat ek nie n motorfiets het nie ... glad nie!

The announcement was made at a red carpet event at Emperors Palace in the City of Ekurhuleni last month, in aid of the Women4Women Foundation.

Principal judge and former Miss South Africa, Cindy Nell-Roberts admitted to this being the hardest round of judging thus far as all semi-finalists had inspired them and displayed beauty, grace and dedication.

Participants sought for PTSD study People who have suffered or witnessed any traumatic events are being sought by the Department of Psychiatry of Stellenbosch University for a study about the prediction and prevention of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

The purpose of this study by Dr Sharain Suliman of the Department of Psychiatry is to see who develops PTSD after experiencing a traumatic event such as a car accident, robbery or assault, and to try and prevent PTSD, said Pamela Stevens, research assistant for Suliman.

“PTSD is a psychiatric disorder that can occur following the experience or witnessing of life-threatening events. Some people will have stress reactions that do not go away on their own, or may even get worse over time,” Stevens said.

She added: “People who suffer from PTSD often relive the experience through nightmares and flashbacks, have difficulty sleep-

ing and feel cut-off from people around them.

“These symptoms can be severe enough and last long enough to significantly interfere with the person’s daily life,” she said.

The study will be conducted at the faculty of medicine and health sciences of the Stellenbosch University’s Tygerberg campus.

“We will do a clinical interview where we will ask about mental and physical health, as well as some other general questions,” said Stevens.

They will also do a physical examination and draw some blood (about 45ml, which is equal to three tablespoons) to test the levels of stress in the body. “We will set up a second visit to do a series of tests called a neuropsychological evaluation. This includes pencil and paper tests, puzzles and games, as we test memory, attentiveness and mental flexibility,” Stevens said.

“Some participants will be asked to visit

a website called PTSD Coach and complete some or all of the modules offered. This application is completely anonymous. We will ask to see participants again three, six and 12 months later, when we will again ask a number of questions about how they are feeling mentally and physically.”

Participants must have experienced a traumatic event; must be willing and able to provide written informed consent; must be between the ages of 18 and 55; and must be able to read and write in English or Afrikaans at Grade 5 level (in order to be able to read and understand consent forms and assessment measures). “The participant needs to contact us within 10 to 14 days after the trauma occurred,” Stevens said.

Participants will be provided with R150 travelling money, as well as a letter to their employer for absence from work.

Keep the warmth in and the chill out W

ith lots of cold fronts and icy weather still ahead this winter, it makes sense to keep working on ways to keep the warmth in and the chill out of your home – while also cutting down on those horrendous winter electricity bills.

And one of the easiest things to do says Gerhard Kotzé, managing director (MD) of the RealNet estate agency group, is to check all the windows and exterior doors to make sure there are no gaps where cold air can get in – and apply weather-strip to any problem areas. “You may also want to change to heavier curtains or drapes in this season as that helps to prevent heat loss to the exterior, especially at night.”

Next, he says, you should ensure that your

ceilings are properly insulated. This prevents the warm air in the rooms that you have heated up from escaping into the roof void and then outside. “There are all kinds of insulation but if you’re only installing it now, your best bet would be ‘green’ material made from recycled paper or plastic, as it is very efficient and relatively inexpensive.”

Another important step is to check your roof itself for any loose tiles or sheets, and if you have any fireplaces or woodstoves, to ensure that its chimneys and flues are all clean so that it burns well and generate more heat, Kotzé says.

Indoors, you can cut down on electricity or gas usage for heaters by making more use of jerseys, thermal underwear and blankets

– and only warming up the rooms you are actually using.

“Electric blankets are also more efficient than trying to heat up your whole bedroom before you go to sleep, and if you are using an electric oven for any reason, leave the door open once you’ve finished cooking and don’t waste the heat you have already generated.”

In areas where temperatures can drop below freezing, you should also check that any outside water pipes are properly insulated so that they won’t give off heat from hot water to the exterior or alternatively freeze up at night and burst, he says. “And if you haven’t already done so, you should buy a geyser blanket this winter. This will help to

keep water that has already been heated up warm for longer and save electricity.”

Meanwhile, in winter-rainfall areas, it’s important to keep your gutters clear and install leaf guards to prevent downpipes and rainwater tank inlets from getting blocked and overflowing in all the wrong places. In addition, Kotzé says, you should give any wooden decks an extra coat of sealer to keep out the winter elements.

Then in those areas where rain is often also accompanied by storm winds, it is really worth going around your garden and cutting any dead or hanging branches off your trees and shrubs before it damages your roof or windows and lets in the wet on a cold winter’s night.

Die boonste ses spanne ná die afhandeling van die ligabepalings (oor so ’n maand of wat) kom aan die einde van die seisoen in aanmerking vir die uitspeelwedstryde om die Presidentbeker.
