lke kind wil in ’n liefdevolle huis met ’n ma en pa grootword, maar dis nie vir almal beskore nie.

Baie kinders in die Eersterivier- en Blue Downs-omgewing ken dit nie, want in die meeste gevalle is een of albei ouers afwesig.

Daarom het die Apostoliese Geloofsendingkerk in Eersterivier nou ook sy eie kinderhuis – een van 32 geregistreerde AGSkinderhuise in die land – begin, wat deur die kerk bestuur word.

“Hier is baie kinders in ons area wat nie weet wat dit is om in ’n liefdevolle huisopset op te groei nie, want baie is enkelouers se kinders, of word deur grootouers grootgemaak. In ons kinderhuis is daar tussen drie tot agt kinders, wat deur ’n huismoeder en

-vader vertroetel en versorg word. Ons hou dit klein sodat die huisouers alles maklik kan hanteer,” het Susan de Villiers, vrouepastoor by die AGS in Eersterivier, gesê.

Die kinderhuis is deur die welsynsdepartement van die AGS-kerk van Suid-Afrika begin met die doel om die kinders ’n gevoel van ’n gesinswoning te laat ervaar.

“Die huisouers ontvang gereeld opleiding om die kinders net die beste te gee. Die predikante van ons kerk kom hier tot die huisouers se redding. Hulle gee raad aan die huisouers en indien van die kinders swak in hul skoolwerk vaar, word hulp gereël om die kinders te help met die vakke waarin hulle nie so goed presteer nie.

“Soos in enige huis, is daar klein jakkalsies wat dinge bietjie deurmekaar kan krap, en ons (die kerk) probeer om die probleme

saam met die huisouers oplos,” het De Villiers gesê.

Volgens haar neem die gemeente of die selgroepe graag die kinders uit op uitstappies en nooi hulle hul na partytjies, maar gemeentelede loer ook by dié huis in met ’n lekkerny of twee.

“Tans oorweeg ons nie nog ’n kinderhuis in die omgewing nie, want soos in enige ander huishouding is daar geldelike uitgawes.

“Ons het altyd geldelike ondersteuning nodig, en baie van die gemeentelede en van ons borge vat hier ons hand.

“Belangstellendes wat skenkings wil maak, is welkom om die kerk te besoek met hul bydraes,” het sy gesê. Die vroue van die kerk is ook by baie ander projekte in Blue Downs en omgewing betrokke.

In some cases, the bags contained a handwritten note wishing the receiver well on her journey to recovery and a life outside of abuse and violence.

We are hoping to recreate this female pantry and be able to donate all the items we receive to a charity of our readers’ choosing.

For this, we are once more calling for help from our loyal readers – those caring people who have supported our monthly campaigns so faithfully since the beginning of the year.

“Om die kabels te vervang, beloop jaarliks miljoene rande,” het sy gesê.

Volgens haar kan die verlies aan produktiwiteit, die vertroue van die pendelaars en Metrorail se reputasie nie in rand en sent vasgestel word nie.

“Die kabeldiefstal gee aanleiding tot twee kwessies – die koperkabels word verkoop vir geld en in sommige gevalle is dit net omdat individue of groepe daarop uit is om treindienste te ontwrig as deel van hul eie agendas.

“In sommige gevalle kan die gesteelde koperkabels vervang word met vesel, maar in die geval van die kabel wat 3 000 volt bevat, kan dit nie gedoen word nie.

“Soms kan die koper ook met aluminium vervang word met ’n ratio van 5:1, maar die nadeel is dat dit moeilik is om dit tussen twee maspale te hang,” het Scott gesê.

Volgens haar kom kabeldiefstalle hoofsaaklik op die noordelike treinlyn van Bellville, Strand, Muldersvlei en Wellington voor, asook die treinlyn oor Bishop Lavis.

“Metrorail is tans besig om ligte stroomkabeling met vesel te vervang as deel van die nasionale multimiljoen-projek.

Kapt. Kevin Williams, woordvoerder van die Parow-polisie, het by navraag gesê dat dit onwettig is om gesteelde kabels te verkoop.

“Wanneer die persone gearresteer word, word ’n klag van besit van moontlike gesteelde eiendom teen hulle geopen.

“Die proses wat gevolg moet word met die gesteelde kabels, is dat wanneer die skrootwerfeienaar die goedere ontvang, hy dit in ’n tweedehandse register aanteken.

Indien dit nie opgeteken is nie, word die skrootwerfeienaar beboet,” het Williams gesê.

Hy het ook gevra dat die gemeenskap kabeldiefstal onverwyld moet rapporteer.

Skrootwerfeienaars word aangeraai om nie koperkabels aan te koop nie.

Richard Walker, streeksbestuurder van Metrorail, het die Metrorail-beskermingsdienste bedank vir die arrestasies.

“Ek vertrou dat die volgehoue arrestasies misdadigers twee keer sal laat dink om kabeldiefstal te pleeg.

“Vir die skrootwerfeienaars wil ek sê om kontant vir kabels te betaal sonder om vrae te vra, moedig kabeldiefstal aan,” het hy gesê.

Hy het bygevoeg dat in die tydperk 21 Julie tot 25 Julie twee persone vir besit van onwettige dwelms, een vir die besit van ’n gevaarlike wapen en een vir die steel van ’n omheining gearresteer is.

“In al die gevalle is die misdadigers aan die polisie oorhandig en moet die gereg sy gang gaan.

“Metrorail bied ’n beloning op pad na ’n van R25 000 aan vir enige inligting wat tot tronkstraf kan lei,” het Walker gesê.

Volgens kapt. Daphne O’Reilly, woordvoerder van die Elsiesrivier-polisie, het die twee op Maandag 24 Julie in die Goodwoodlanddroshof verskyn op aanklag van peuter, beskadig of vernietiging van belangrike infrastruktuur en diefstal.

VERVOLG VAN BLADSY 1 “Dis algemeen bekend dat Eersterivier en Blue Downs gebuk gaan onder werkloosheid, enkelouerskap, tienerswangerskappe, dwelm- en alkoholmisbruik en bendegeweld. Om aandag aan al die probleme te gee, hou ons gereeld werksessies, wat deur die provinsiale regering aangebied word.

“Ander instansies bied ook werksessies aan en dis of redelik bekostigbaar, of word gratis aangebied,” het De Villiers gesê.

“Van die vroue word geleer om selfonderhoudend te raak, hul skoolloopbaan te voltooi, verder te gaan studeer sodat hulle werk of beter werk kan kry. Met al die hulpmiddels tot hul beskikking kan hulle ook help om die werkloosheid in die gebied te verminder,” het sy gesê.

Volgens De Villiers is kinders wat dros ook ’n probleem in Eersterivier en omgewing.

“Om aandag aan dié probleem te gee, werk ons nou saam met die Blue Downsgemeenskapspolisiëringsforum. Ons vind uit wat die probleme tuis is en help gesamentlik om die ouers en kind te help. Die kerkkantoor help ook om behoeftige gesinne in die gemeenskap uit te ken. Baie

Die kerk beoog ook verskeie ander be-

magtigingsprojekte in die gemeenskap. ’n Interkerklike vrouebediening word vir die naweek van 27 tot 29 Oktober beplan.

“Die bediening is veeldoelig en ons hoop om ongeveer 2 000 vroue te bereik om eenheid in die kerk te bevorder. Ons wil die vroue leer om saam te staan en mekaar te vier. Ons wil vroue met leierseienskappe toerus om in hul woongebiede, kerk, families en sakeondernemings ’n verskil te gaan maak.

“Vyf vroue van die Kaap sluit later vandeesmaand aan by ’n toergroep van 32 vroue om in Thailand en Bali te gaan ontspan. Ons wil van ons kant af self volgende jaar ons eie toer soontoe onderneem om ons mense aan ander lande en kulture bloot te stel,” het De Villiers gesê.

Sy beplan ook om werksessies vir vroue aan te bied om hul vaardighede te ontwikkel en hoe om hul eie sakeonderneming te begin en te registreer. Baie vroue in Eersterivier en omgewing is nie altyd bewus van watter opleidingsprogramme aangebied word nie, het sy gesê.

group of men and women who have been participating in daily fitness classes at the Eerste River Multipurpose Centre said a sad goodbye to one of their trainers, Nolan Swanepoel, on Thursday 27 July.

The classes, which focus particularly on keeping the locals moving, have seen Swanepoel at the helm since February. “My contract with the City has now expired,” he explains.

He says every morning spent with the group over the past few months has been exciting. “I never knew that I’d be able to work with and handle so many different personalities,” he laughs.

On Thursday morning, Swanepoel reported to the centre as per usual. “I took a bike ride to the multipurpose centre and when I got there, one of the regulars took me to the nearby stadium,” he says. That, he says, was when he started to become suspicious of what was happening. They then returned to the centre and that was when the group surprised him with a farewell party. “The group really surprised me. They prayed for me and wrote me letters as well,” says Swanepoel.

Noaleen Donson, who has been participating in the classes for the past two months, says Swanepoel always encouraged them and that he went out of his way to assist everyone in the class.

“On some days we were more than 40 in the class and he dealt with all of our personalities, even though we are all different,” she says.

“He just has that sparkling personality and we wanted to celebrate him and the contribution he has made over the past few months.” She credits Swanepoel with creating an atmosphere that would “cheer up body, mind and soul”.

The group say goodbye to Nolan Swanepoel at the Eerste River Multipurpose Centre. Swanepoel can be seen standing among the ladies in the second row, fourth from the left (in grey hoodie).

According to Merle Williams, who has been an instructor at the fitness classes for the past six years, Swanepoel did a great job.

“We had a stroke patient with whom he did extraordinary work,” says Williams.

“She was so hesitant to get into the pool and he convinced her that everything would be okay. She now takes part in our swimming programme,” explains Williams.

Swanepoel says he is sad to leave, and future plans for him include participating in training to become a security officer.

“I feel sad to be leaving and I just want to thank the ladies for all their effort.” He adds that he hopes that the group will continue to work hard and believe in themselves and their abilities.

The free daily classes at the multipurpose centre will continue on weekday mornings at the usual time and will now be run by Avron Manchest, Swanepoel’s colleague at the centre.

Lizelle sê: “Sy is baie mak, feisty en haar geskrop laat die pitte spat tot in my papegaai se hok en sy ‘skel’ ons heeldag uit, want alles moet oor haar gaan.

“Om alles te kroon, slaap sy ook op die bed.

“Nou weet ek waar ‘tipies chick’ vandaan kom,” lag De Kock.

Die hoender het ’n ringetjie om haar poot wat dien as ’n aanduiding dat sy aan iemand behoort en haar skreeusnaakse, unieke optrede wys dat sy die goeie lewe van bederf goed ken Lizelle sê hulle het vir haar ’n naam gegee: “Double-Oh-Chicken”, soos die bekende James Bond se agentnommer, om haar “bedrywige diva-persoonlikheid” te beskryf.

“Sy wei en skrop die huis vol. Ons kat het ook op sy moses gekry, so hy maak nou geen oogkontak meer nie.

“Vandat sy hier is, sleep die kat se stert, my papegaai ignoreer my, want ek is ’n cheater, en die budgies kruip weg,” sê De Kock.

Volgens dr. Bernice van Huyssteen, ’n plaaslike veearts, is ’n hoender as troeteldier baie algemeen.

Sy verduidelik dat hulle baie koddig, aktief en vermakerig kan wees.

Hulle is ook geneig om die huis oor te vat en sien dit as hul eie.

“Ek het baie kliënte wat hoenders as troeteldiere het. Baie spandeer tyd binne die huis met hul eienaars – gewoonlik op die bank, of verkeer ‘gesellig’ met die gesin.

“Sommige reageer as daar met hul gepraat word en kom na jou as hulle geroep word.

“Hulle is ook bewus van wie hul eienaars is. Ek dink hoenders is aangenaam om in die

The story of an elderly man who went missing, but was actually just dozing among the bushes, certainly counts among TygerBurger’s more bizarre stories.

The 71-year-old man had the Forest Heights Neighbourhood Watch (NHW) and Mfuleni police conducting a late-night search on Friday 21 July, after he had gone missing.

The man, who is on crutches, set out from his home at about 16:00 in an effort to search for herbs in nearby bushes, it was later learnt.

According to Mfuleni police spokesperson, Captain Nomathemba Muavha, the daughter of the missing man went to the police at around 22:00 to report her father missing after he failed to return home.

Police and the NHW immediately responded and searched the bushes for the man.

“The police and NHW of Forest Heights went into the bushes at approximately 22:30 and conducted a search until they stumbled across [the elderly man] at approximately 23:30, sleeping soundly under a bush,” says Muavha.

“Apparently, he fell there and couldn’t help himself up.”

The police expressed their appreciation for the work done by the Forest Heights NHW. “We appreciate the work done in the community by the neighbourhood watches and appeal to more people in Mfuleni to form and join neighbourhood watches,” urges Muavha.

According to Mfuleni police social crime officer, Sergeant Nozuko Matyobeni, during one of the operations officers in Delft arrested a 19-year-old man for possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

Matyobeni says officers were on patrol when they received a complaint about a shooting in Junker Street in The Hague.

“Upon their arrival they saw the suspect, and when the suspect saw the police he started running.

“A chase ensued and police apprehended the suspect and found him to be in possession of a 9mm firearm, one extended magazine and two live rounds of ammunition,” Matyobeni says.

Three arrested for illegal ammunition Meanwhile, three more suspects were arrested for possession of illegal ammunition in Gatwick Street.

In addition, a 19-year-old man was arrested for possession of an imitation firearm in Oliphant Street in Leiden on Sunday 30 July at about 01:00.

In a separate incident, Ravensmead police arrested a 28-year-old man for possession of an imitation firearm.

Matyobeni says that on Friday 28 July at about 20:30, police were patrolling in Ernest Esau Street when they spotted a suspicious-looking man.

“When the man saw the police he started running and the police chased him.

“While he was running he threw something away, but police caught up with him.

“Police later found the item the suspect had thrown away, which turned out to be a pellet gun,” she says.

The 28-year-old man from Florida in Ravensmead was arrested.

No wait to report missing person Blue Downs cluster commander, Major General Vincent Beaton, commended the police, Metro Police, Law Enforcement officers, traffic police, neighbourhood watch and safety structures, as well as reservists, for their input, dedication and commitment in ensuring that the perpetrators of crime are brought to justice.

He further thanked the community for working with the police and being whistleblowers in their areas.

He also encouraged the community to keep on assisting the police in ridding their neighbourhoods of criminal elements.

Beaton said he wishes to remind the community that there is no waiting period when it comes to reporting a missing person.

Beaton also said that it is advisable for community members to print clear recent photographs of their loves ones and keep them in a safe place so that they are easily accessible and can be presented to the police in times of need.

wo Wesbank locals’ managerial and organisational skills were put to the test when they worked as team chaperones at the recent 2017 under-18 Craven Week and Academy Week.

The event was hosted at St Stithians College in Johannesburg from Monday 17 to Saturday 22 July. Zandre Allen (23) served as a chaperone for the Griquas Rural Central District team, while Lorenzo Cloete (18) served as a chaperone for both the Griquas and Griquas Academy teams.

Allen describes the experience as “humbling”.

“It was not the easiest of tasks, but the whole week was about serving others,” says Allen.

Both he and Cloete are members of The Samaritan Youth Development, a faith-based organisation in Wesbank. In 2010 the organisation entered into a partnership with Sports for Christ Action South Africa (SCAS), and it is through this partnership that they were afforded the opportunity to serve as chaperones.

Their duties included waking the players and ensuring that they went to breakfast on time, making the appropriate arrangements with the team’s bus driver, liaising with other chaperones about the use of the fields for practice sessions, ensuring that the players’ kits were washed after matches, and ensuring that all the water bottles were filled.

“We had to ensure that all the teams’ needs were seen to, even the unexpected ones such as accompanying injured players to the doctor,” explains Allen.

“We had to put the team and coaches first,” adds Cloete.

Tough but rewarding road to becoming a CA “The road to becoming a chartered accountant is tough, but it’s worth it”.

This is according to Elton Pullen, a University of the Western Cape (UWC) lecturer and now also one of the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants’ (SAICA) top 35 under-35 chartered accountants for 2017.

Every year, SAICA recognises the top young chartered accountants in the country for their contributions to entrepreneurship, corporate accounting and academia.

Pullen grew up in Belhar, where he spent most of his life.

While attending The Settlers High School in Bellville, he set his sights on a career as a chartered accountant, going on to earn his BCom and BCom Honours in Accounting from UWC and a Master’s Degree in Financial Management from the University of Cape Town (UCT), where he’s currently completing his PhD. He worked as an audit manager and financial manager before deciding to return to UWC to teach future generations the art and science of Management Accounting and Finance.

With his natural love for the subject, and for helping others to understand it, he’s found it extremely rewarding.

Pullen decided to become a CA while in Grade 9.

“We had an assignment to research a profession in which we were interested.

I was doing well in accounting at the time, so I thought I would research professions requiring an accounting background. And so the CA dream was born.

It seemed interesting and important, and it also did not hurt that I was told CAs earn a lot of money,” he says.

Pullen says the best part of his job is that he has been given a platform to change family legacies forever.

“Many of our students are first-generation university students and will be

Elton Pullen. first-generation CAs. Once they attain their qualifications their family legacies will be changed forever. I am extremely honoured and grateful to be a part of that,” he says.

He says the road to becoming a CA is tough, so he encourages those wanting to pursue this career to make sure they understand why they are pursuing it.

“I have always been inspired by two great men, William Wallace (from Scotland, also seen in the blockbuster Braveheart) and Nelson Mandela.

“Their roads were both tough, but they fought for freedom at all costs.

“You will probably never have to die or be imprisoned to become a CA, but you need to make sure that your ‘why’ will push you through when the going gets tough, because it will get tough sometimes,” Pullen says.

Cultural concert for hope

C

ape Cultural Collective (CCC) and northern suburbs artists hosted a cultural concert for healing and social justice at the Shawco Hall in Elsies River on Saturday 29 July.

Several artists from different walks of life performed to bring a message of hope, encouragement and healing to the community members, who are evidently traumatised by the ongoing killings of the youth through gang violence and the abuse of women and children.

The CCC saw the need and outcry of the community and decided to hold a free concert for the people.

The concert was well supported by the community.

This special event’s main objective was to raise awareness of recent acts of violence against women and children in Elsies River and its surrounding areas.

This concert celebrated the spirit of the community and its commitment to social justice, but also aimed to help with the healing process for those directly affected by the aforementioned trauma.

Another aim of the event was to highlight the importance of the arts in the community. The concert line-up consisted of various artists, including singers, poets, actors, traditional ceremonial dancers and flamenco guitarists.

dents in the community and invited them to enjoy some boeber and a plate of warm food at her house.

Lakay also handed out blankets and jerseys to the ladies, as well as packs of tinned food to get them through the rest of the winter.

“I’ve known most of these ladies for years, since we moved here, and we’ve become quite close over the years,” says Lakay.

“Today we only wanted to treat the elderly, so that they would feel special,” she explains. “Once or twice a month we make it all about them.”

However, once Lakay had seen to the elderly ladies, the children in the neighbourhood were already lining up with bowls and lunchboxes to enjoy some of the akhni that she had prepared.

Lakay runs a food kitchen on a weekly basis, providing a warm meal to about 150 children from Wimbledon Estate.

The food she prepares is made entirely from donations she receives from the community and local organisations.

“The preparations take quite some time, but once you see the result of all the effort you’ve put in, you’re very glad that you went that extra mile,” says Lakay.

Apart from the weekly food kitchens, Lakay and her team are also involved in handing out food parcels and are especially busy during Ramadaan, when they partake in mass cooking in Elsies River and then bring the food back to their respective communities to hand out.

Due to the fact that the weekly meals are prepared entirely with donated food items, the organisation is always in need of donations.

Ensuring that crèche learners at Hoby Educare Centre in Greenpark, Mfuleni, receive education in a warm, loving and dry atmosphere is the main aim of the staff at the crèche.

According to Elsabé Marais, who has been working in the community for about 16 years, there are about 32 learners at the crèche. However, the containers in which the crèche operates are deteriorating at a rapid pace due to flooding in the winter season.

“For the past 10 years I have been working hard at getting the crèche up and running, seeing it registered as a non-profit organisation,” Marais says.

She says in the past the staff were able to make a success of the crèche and were also receiving enough funds to purchase food for the children.

“Hoby Educare Centre was then moved to higher ground to ensure it would not be continuously flooded, but the move created other problems,” she says.

Two of the containers were moved to new premises, and with them already being in a poor condition, they were damaged even more.

“The condition of the containers now means that the crèche no longer meets the requirements to continue as a non-profit organisation. “The learners of the crèche do not know anything but cold and wet weather, and I urgently what to change this for them to ensure they receive the best care and education,” she pleads.

“Ek oefen al sedert einde verlede jaar saam met die Stormers, maar het nie gedroom dat ek binne ’n jaar my debuut sou maak nie. Boonop was ek ook deel van die SA o.20-span van Chean Roux wat moes voorberei vir die Junior Wêreldbeker in Georgië,” het Damian gesê.

Hy is ook ’n produk van Paul Roos-Gimnasium op Stellenbosch, maar het sy rugbytande by die Primêre Skool Methodiste op Somerset-Wes geslyp.

“Ek moet erken toe ek ’n tyd terug teen die Cheetahs (eerste wedstryd) opdraf, was my grootste bekommernis hoe ek in die wedstryd sal vaar.

Maar toe ek die bal afskop, was my senuwees iets van die verlede en het ek net my eie spel gespeel. In my agterkop het ek ont-

Hy speel sedert laerskooldae losskakel, maar is ’n veelsydige agterspeler.

Tydens die Junior Wêreldbeker het hy senter gespeel, want Curwin Bosch van die Sharks was die eerstekeuse-losskakel.

“Geleenthede is belangrik wanneer dit na jou kant toe kom en jy moet dit tot jou voordeel gebruik. Daar is ’n persepsie onder rugbykenners dat die losskakel-posisie nie eintlik vir bruin spelers bedoel is nie.

“Ek wil die teendeel bewys en die kritici se monde snoer met taktiese skoppe, goeie verdediging en fyn voetwerk op die veld.

Die rugbykenners is oortuig daarvan dat bruin spelers net vleuels is en nie die nr.10trui waardig is nie.

“Ek wil nie ’n na-aper van ander losskakels wees nie, hoewel ek groot bewondering het vir Dan Carter van Nieu-Seeland en Quade Cooper van Australië. Ek kyk wat hulle goed doen en kyk hoe dit my spel kan verbeter,” het Damian gesê.

Hy sê dadelik hy wil nie te kenne gee dat hy nou die volmaakte losskakel is nie.

“Daar is altyd ruimte vir verbetering. Aspekte van my spel wat kan verbeter, is my verdediging, my taktiese en lynskoppe.

“My droom is om terug Strand toe te gaan en iets vir die gemeenskap te doen. Daar is baie sosio-ekonomiese probleme in die Strand.

“Werkloosheid is die grootste probleem en dit gaan gepaard met kinders wat saans honger gaan slaap en sosiale euwels soos dwelm- en alkoholmisbruik is deel van jou grootwordjare,” het Damian gesê.
