P

atrons of the Eerste River Library, on the corner of Bob’s Way and Beverley Street, will have to borrow books from and make use of the library services at either Melton Rose Library or Mfuleni Library for the next three months. This comes with the closing of the Eerste River Library towards the end of this month due to maintenance work needing to be carried out. According to senior librarian Rene Jashim, the library will be closed for a period of three months, during which it will under-

go renovations. Jashim says that the library staff hope to reopen the doors in December, or if renovations take longer than expected, in the first week of January 2018. “During this project the library will be painted and tiled, windows will be repaired and upgraded, and the internal spaces repurposed,” says Anda Ntsodo, the City’s Mayco member for Area East. According to Ntsodo the objective of the maintenance at Eerste River Library is to ensure that library users have a safe library space and that the building remains userfriendly. He further says that an exact period for the

duration of the maintenance project cannot be given as it depends on the amount of work to be done. In terms of the total cost of the project, Ntsodo confirms that costing of the project is still underway. Jashim and Ntsodo assure the community that even though the library will be closed, the staff will continue to run outreach programmes at educare centres and schools in the community. “The staff of the library will continue with their respective responsibilities, including the implementation of library programmes off-site and the processing of books,” says Ntsodo. Off-site library programmes include sto-

rytelling at various crèches within the community, a teen programme, two literacy programmes taking place at local schools, as well as an adult diabetes programme on 7 December. Jashim confirms that if renovations have not yet been completed by early December, they will approach the Eerste River Multipurpose Centre to host the diabetes programme there. Library users are encouraged to make use of the next available library, Melton Rose Library, which is within a 5km radius of the Eerste River Library, or as another alternative Mfuleni Library, during the renovation period.
