n Tuesday 10 October, provincial minister of education, Debbie Schäfer, and provincial minister of transport and public works, Donald Grant, visited the new Eerste River High School in Blue Downs. Schäfer and Grant were led on a walk through the new R60 million building by Clive Truter, the acting chief architect of the project. Construction of the 16-month project, which commenced in June 2016, is nearing completion. The project will provide a much-needed school for the Eerste River community, as population numbers in the community are on the rise. The school is set to cater to 1200 learners from grades 8 to 12 with a planned expansion in the future, which will see the school’s capacity increase to 1480 learners.
On and offsite opportunities provided During the walk-through, Schäfer and Grant paid special attention to among other things, the ramps constructed for disabled learners, ventilation in the classrooms, as well as measures that have been implemented to combat water wastage. The new school, which will consist of 33 classrooms, two specialist classrooms, two science laboratories, one multimedia centre and one Computer Applications Technology laboratory, has required the Western Cape departments of Education and Transport and Public Works to work together. “This R60 million Eerste River High
School project included extensive construction work as well as empowerment opportunities for the benefit of targeted enterprises and local labourers. A total of 22% of the construction value was allocated to targeted enterprises, while 6% was dedicated to local labour,” explains Grant. He further explains that National Youth Services provided 10 life skills training opportunities that took place off site, while an additional 10 building trades training opportunities were provided on site during the project.
Doors opening to grades 8 and 9 in 2018 “The WCED invests heavily in school infrastructure to meet the demands for schooling in the province, and to improve the quality of our schools as teaching and learning spaces. “I am pleased that we have been able to deliver a school that the Eerste River community can be proud of and in which its learners can thrive”, says Schäfer. She appealed to the community to join forces in an effort to look after the school. “It is important for communities to take ownership of the schools in their area and to realise that they have an important role to play in protecting their community’s assets,” says Schäfer. “We are confident that once the doors are open, this new school will be an institution of teaching and learning, where learners, educators and parents are safe and secure, and where quality learning can take place.” Eerste River High School is set to open its doors in 2018 to Grade 8 and 9 learners.
