FOREST VILLAGE: THE DISABLED BENEFIT FROM HOUSING
Houses handed over in Eerste River JAYDEE CYSTER @jaydeecyster
O
n Tuesday 5 December, Western Cape premier, Helen Zille, and provincial human settlements minister, Bonginkosi Madikizela, handed over homes to residents of Eerste River. This forms part of the multimillion rand Forest Village Housing Project specifically for disabled beneficiaries in Eerste River. The hand-over formed part of commemorating the International Day for People with
Disabilities. The ceremony saw the premier, minister, contractors, beneficiaries and local stakeholders come together to celebrate the handing over of 77 units. While addressing residents, Madikizela thanked all parties involved. “Over 5 000 housing opportunities will be created by this project,” he said. He furthermore emphasised the importance of making use of local small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). “We must make use of local SMEs as a means of empowering them without compromising on
the quality of the homes,” said Madikizela. The minister officially launched the project in June with a sod-turning ceremony and said that it is exciting that a mere six months later, they were able to do the handover. “It is important that all spheres of government work together to make this a success,” said Madikizela. In the keynote address delivered by Zille, she said that it is the province’s policy to first help those who need it the most. “There is no country in Africa, and very few in the world, that has as generous a
housing policy as South Africa.” She emphasised that the handing over of the houses is not a hand-out, but the first step to a proper, dignified life. “Remember that your path in life should not be prepared by the government. The receiving of this house should be seen as an opportunity,” said Zille. She emphasised that the beneficiaries should take it upon themselves to ensure that their children are properly educated and can eventually buy their own homes. V To page 2.
