hat was initially a holiday programme structured for only 50 children has now grown to accommodate an additional 20 to 30 children on a daily basis, says Pastor Charmaine Hendricks from the Kingdom Rehoboth Community based in Happy Valley, The programme, hosted by the Kingdom Rehoboth Community in partnership with the Department of Community Safety, took place at Happy Valley Primary School from Monday 11 to Friday 15 December.

dren, aged four to 14, busy with fun activities, but also provided them with breakfast and lunch and a party pack to take home at the end of the day.

The children were also tasked with making up their own rules for the week.

“Firstly we decided that the blowing of the whistle means that everyone must be quiet and listen; secondly, that everyone must love one another, and thirdly that they should respect one another,” explains Hendricks. “We worked on these rules on a daily basis.”

She says that the entire week was focused on working on the mind of the child. “I hope that what they have learnt here, the lessons of loving and caring for one another, will stay with them for many years to come.”

Hendricks says the children enjoyed selfdefence training, a visit from the clinic to discuss the topics of HIV/Aids and hygiene, a visit from representatives of the Bosasa Youth Development Centre, and a fun and relaxing day during which they played some sport and competitive games.

She says the programme was initiated due to a need that was identified within the community.

“It is so wonderful how God and the school have allowed us to do this,” says Hendricks.

“There is a need for this, as our children are usually alone at home and this can lead to them being exploited.”

Hy raai ook huiseienaars aan om veiligheidsligte rondom die huis aan te bring.

“Goeie slotte en bure wat mekaar se belange op die hart dra, kan ook ’n afskrikmiddel vir voornemende inbrekers wees.

Ons het almal gewoontes en dit is raadsaam om indien moontlik jou daaglikse roetine af te wissel,” het Mostert gesê.

Jy moet ook seker maak dat jou skuifdeure stewig vas is sodat dit nie van sy spoor gelig kan word nie. Moet ook nie jou sleutels of spaarsleutels buite jou perseel wegsteek nie.

“Maak seker dat jy jou polisie en die veiligheidsmaatskappy se telefoonnommer in jou besit het. Deur by jou plaaslike buurtwag aan te sluit, kan jy ook die ore en oë in jou buurt wees as ander bure vakansie gaan hou,” het Mostert gesê.

Subcouncil and partners host tournament JAY­DEE CYSTER @jaydeecyster

A

s a means of integrating the communities of wards 11, 19 and 108, subcouncil 21 hosted a fun soccer tournament on Saturday 2 December at the Blue Downs Sports Grounds.

The day, a collaborative effort by the subcouncil, the Recreation and Parks Department, the Department of Water and Sanitation and Library Services, saw local soccer clubs come out to enjoy a day of fun and information sharing.

The soccer tournament with a difference not only focused on the soccer games but on ensuring that the children were informed about various issues such as saving water, library etiquette, health issues and life skills.

According to subcouncil 21 chairperson, Malusi Booi, the day was an opportunity for the children to be entertained, for communities to become integrated, for children to learn how to save water, and to inform people about the services offered at the library.

“This event also served as an opportunity to encourage parents to be more supportive of their children, as many of our children [in the ward] are not supported by their parents when they play sport. We need to change that narrative,” explains Booi.

He says that a decision has been taken at subcouncil to host an event such as this on an annual basis.

“We want the mini-cup tournament to include both soccer and netball in the future.”

Booi further states that this initiative is focused on the five pillars of the City, namely offering opportunities, being a safe city, being a caring city, being an inclusive city, and being a well-run city.

Present at the tournament were library staff from Kuils River, Mfuleni and Melton Rose who hosted sessions with the children.

These sessions included the reading of a story to the children, as well as a session dedicated to informing the children of the importance of protecting their bodily integrity.

Furthermore the children kept themselves busy with games provided by the Recreation and Parks Department.

Officers win safety and security awards M

etro Police sergeant, Sandile Sololo from Mfuleni, smashed the competition and grabbed the coveted Officer of the Year award at the City of Cape Town’s annual Safety and Security Awards ceremony on 7 December.

The awards are designed to acknowledge staff members who have gone above and beyond the call of duty, often under trying circumstances.

“Sergeant Sololo is one of the many shining stars working hard every day to keep our residents safe. His no-nonsense attitude and commitment is something to admire, and I for one am proud to have individuals of his

calibre in the Safety and Security Directorate,” says JP Smith, Mayco member for this portfolio.

“Every year the safety and security directorate is a top performer in terms of budget spent. The money we are given is hard-won and we leverage it for all we can. I am pleased to note that traffic fine income this past year is the highest it has ever been.”

He adds that the emergency centre number, 107, answered more than 500 000 calls, 85% of which within 10 seconds.

Overall winner Sololo, attached to the Metro Police Camera Response Unit, says: “The award was achieved through hard work, de-

Daarom het die wetstoepassingslede, wat in Durbanweg geleë is en in die area werk, ’n wisseltrofee vir uitstaande diens van die CID ontvang.

Hoofinspekteur Abraham Basson (55) van die Paarl en inspekteur Jeffrey Papier (48) van Durbanville het die trofee op die CID se

algemene jaarvergadering ontvang.

“Ons het dit (’n trofee) glad nie verwag nie,” vertel Basson.

Hy het gesê die trofee sal hulle net inspireer om harder te werk.

Basson en Papier het verlede week verduidelik hul werk strek wyd. Hulle bekamp nie net misdaad nie, maar verwyder ook onder meer haweloses van persele af en voorkom en bekamp rommelstrooiing, watervermorsing en ook die verbranding van kabels. “Hulle is sleutelspelers in ons sukses om misdaad te bekamp,” meen Marius Claassen, voorsitter van die CID. Wrap a gift for a good cause Get your gifts wrapped by a charity organisation at any Shoprite or Checkers store and give something back to a needy community.

Charitable organisations are earning some cash over the festive season by wrapping gifts at these local retailers.

The gifts to be wrapped do not have to be bought at a Shoprite or Checkers store – any are welcome.

Some of the stores where local organisations have been successfully wrapping gifts include Shoprite in Eerste River, Checkers Fairbridge Mall, Shoprite in Khayelitsha, Checkers in Willowbridge and others.

One such example is Helping Hands with the Needy, who has worked at Shoprite in Eerste River for 13 years. They raise thousands of rand every year, which is used to run their feeding scheme and pay for stationery and books for learners who can’t afford to buy their own.

The initiative started on 11 December and will run until 25 December, so wrap a gift for a good cause. All proceeds from this annual service are donated to the beneficiary organisations to assist disadvantaged communities.

Potjiekos champions: This team of four locals recently participated in “Laat die potte prut” on VIA, channel 147, on 15 November 2017. The team, consisting of Jerome Burrows, Gerry Smeda, Rosco Smeda and Earl Speelman from Blackheath and Kuils River, outcooked two other teams in the potjiekos competition. According to Speelman the team was tasked with making four Christmas-themed pots. These included their main pot (a roast pot), their second pot (a spicy rice pot), their third pot (a roasted vegetable pot) and a dessert pot (an upside-down pear cake with custard). The team walked away with the first prize, winning wine and beer tasting vouchers, an accommodation voucher from Lekkeslaap and what they count as their favourite prize, an opportunity to drive Ferraris.

Village blaze unites community P

arow Centre has jumped in to help 112 people, including 25 children and eight babies, who were left homeless when their wendyhouses burnt to ashes in the early hours of Sunday 17 December in Elsies River.

The community has come out en masse to support their neighbours, most of whom lost everything in the fire that burnt the Gaba Village, Leonsdale, informal settlement to the ground.

“Elsies River is part of our shopper community, and we want to show our support in their time of need,” says Parow Centre marketing manager, Esley Solomons.

The Leonsdale Civic Centre has since been turned into a temporary refuge for the survivors, and donations of all kinds have started streaming in.

Local ward councillor, Franchesca Walker, told TygerBurger: “The families will be receiving their new structures on Tuesday and continued support will be given to them.

Even though these families went through a traumatic experience, their morale is good and positive and their spirits are high.”

Walker says that on Sunday morning at around 03:00 she received a call from a resident reporting the fire. Eighteen shacks burnt to the ground.

“The people lost all their belongings. It’s so sad – a week before Christmas.”

She said the City’s Fire and Rescue Services were on the scene in a flash.

“I applaud the quick response from the fire department. My heart breaks to see how my community is at a loss. I consoled many, and my tears I could not contain. This tragic disaster has brought the community together.

Many people rallied to help and brought goods to help.”

Walker said the Elim Night Shelter has also assisted greatly in sheltering the displaced, and there are a number of volunteers assisting at the civic centre.

“The City of Cape Town’s Disaster Risk Management Centre assisted with mattresses, toiletry packs for men and women, baby packs, blankets and hot meals. We have been receiving donations in the form of clothing, blankets, shoes and cooked food from various community members and organisations, churches and private businesses.”

Walker said this is a show of support to the affected families.

“What was heartwarming was when people outside Leonsdale and Elsies River came to give support. We had young children emptying their cupboards to bless others.”

Walker said it is suspected the fire was caused by a candle left unattended.

“On arrival a few wendyhouses were alight and the fire was spreading. Necessary assistance was called in to contain the fires.

An inquest docket was opened for investigation.”

runk drivers, beware: You are now being targeted by a vehicle that can pull you over to test your alcohol level where you stand, and then send that information directly onto a mainframe where it is recorded.

Provincial minister for transport and public works, Donald Grant, on Friday 15 December unveiled the new Mobile Alcohol Evidentiary Unit as a further means to combat drunk driving.

The unit forms part of the province’s anti-drunk driving campaign, Operation #BoozeFreeRoads, and is a collaboration between Grant’s department and the Directorate for Public Prosecutions (DPP) and the police.

The new unit is a state-of-the-art, repurposed emergency services vehicle and the first of its kind in the country, which makes it possible to conduct on-the-spot alcohol checks to determine whether a driver is under the influence, while also increasing the likelihood of a successful prosecution.

On-the-spot testing makes it possible to release innocent suspects immediately, Grant says in a statement. It also means that no blood testing is necessary.

By removing the need for personnel to accompany suspects to distant testing centres, the technology also enables more Law Enforcement officials to be on duty at any time, he states.

“This new mobile unit is an exact duplicate of the existing infrastructure inside the Vangate Alcohol Evidence Centre (AEC), which is required when properly administering Evidentiary Breath Alcohol Testing (EBAT), commonly known as the Dräger breathalyser.

“The mobile unit has been repurposed at a cost of just over R400 000, and has been designed to meet the same prescribed standards of the Vangate AEC,” Grant states.

The unit also has video and sound recording capabilities, data-capturing computer programs streaming information back to the Vangate AEC, portable alcohol screening devices and road signage, as well as a water supply and generator.

The unit is currently being deployed on a pilot basis at various hotspots.

“I travel every year to Japan to take part in seminars and training camps to keep abreast of techniques and share them with our local karateka.

“Next year is going to be busy with a lot of travelling and spending time away from my family. It is not ideal but my family supports me, for which I’m thankful. Although the reality is still sinking in, I am the same old Hennie. I love working with children, and seeing them develop and grow as people gives me great pleasure.”

Bosman already has bookings to travel to Zimbabwe, the USA, Canada, Costa Rica, Panama, Iran and Switzerland next year.

“One day in the distant future when I retire, I want to sit back and say I not only made a positive contribution in growing the sport, but I helped people reach their potential,” says Bosman.

fter dedicating 51 years of his life to karate, Hennie Bosman faces his biggest challenge yet as the new international chairman of Kyokushin-Kan Karate.

This was not the only honour to be bestowed upon Bosman as he was also promoted from shihan to hanshi, making him one of a very few elite karateka in the world with an eighth dan black belt.

This all happened at the recent Kyokushin-Kan Junior World Championships held in Tokyo, Japan. Bosman will go down in history as the very first South African-born hanshi of Kyokushin-Kan Karate, as well as the first international chairman.

Scottish-born legend Len Barnes, who lived in South Africa for many years, was the first hanshi in the country.

VEELSYDIGE SPORTMAN: PROVINSIALE KLEURE IN RUGBY EN KRIEKET

n die apartheidsjare het sportlui aan ’n winter- en somersport deelgeneem en nie almal was bevoorreg om in albei sportsoorte hul provinsiale kleure te verwerf nie.

Een so ’n sportman was Fagmie Solomons van die Bo-Kaap. Hy was nie net ’n kranige rugbyspeler nie, maar kon ook goed die wilgerlat inlê en het die Westelike Provinsie in rugby en krieket verteenwoordig.

Hy is onlangs by ’n galageleentheid in die hoofsaal van die College of Cape Town (voorheen Hewat-opleidingskollege) in Athlone vereer.

Die geleentheid is bygewoon deur spelers wat saam of teen hom in sy speeldae op die rugby- of krieketveld gedraf het. Hy was die voorlaaste kaptein van die destydse SuidAfrikaanse Rugbyunie (Saru) wat onder die vaandel van die Suid-Afrikaanse Raad oor Sport (Sacos), rugby gespeel het voordat hy die leisels aan Allister Coetzee, die huidige Bokbreier, oorhandig het.

Shamil Jassiem van die Bo-Kaap en Jamiel Alexander van Kensington het onderskeidelik in krieket en rugby gesien hoe die jong Fagmie se sportloopbaan by die krieketklub Ottomans in die Kaap en die rugbyklub Young Stars in Kensington gestalte kry.

“Ek was destyds die president van Young Stars toe hy sy junior en senior rugby by die klub begin het. Fluffy, soos hy onder sportlui bekend is, was ’n losskakel en skrumskakel en hy het die vermoë gehad om die spelers rondom hom goed te laat lyk, want hy was ’n voetballer. Hy het hande, voete en ’n rugbybrein gehad – sy gelyke het ek nog nie weer in Suid-Afrika gesien nie,” het Alexander gesê.

“Fagmie het soos ons dit in streekstaal noem, albei voete gehad, hy kon dus met albei voete skop en aftrap. Sy teenstanders het nie altyd op die veld geweet wat hy volgende gaan doen nie en hy het hulle aan die raai gehou. As dit nie vir apartheid was nie, sou hy loshande in die Springbokspan ingestap het. Hierdie vaardighede het hy nie net op klubvlak nie, maar ook op provinsiale vlak vir WP en nasionale vlak vir Saru tot sy span se voordeel gebruik.

Dawood Young van Watsoniasrugbyklub in Athlone, wat hul wedstryde op Vygieskraal in Athone speel, het Fagmie as ’n gevaarlike rugbyspeler beskryf.

Sy krieketloopbaan was nie minder glansryk nie en volgens Jassiem was hy ’n stylish krieketspeler.

“Fagmie het vir Ottomans in die toporde (1 tot 3) vanaf junior tot senior vlak gekolf.

“Hy het natuurlike talent gehad en was ’n allrounder in krieket en rugby.

“Fagmie was ’n linkshandige kolwer soos soortgelyke spelers soos Gary Kirsten, die voormalige aanvangskolwer van die WP en die Proteas. Vir Ottomans het hy paaltjiewagter gestaan, maar as hy moes aantree vir sy kolfbeurt het hy die bal orals op die veld gemoker,” het Jassiem gesê.

Fagmie was gelukkig om onder en saam met spelers soos Taliep Salie op klubvlak en Rushdi Magiet en Abduraghmaan “Lefty” Adams op provinsiale vlak te speel. In albei sportsoorte was hy wedstrydfiks en hy het die beginsels van elke sportsoort getrou nagekom. Sy liefde vir rugby en krieket was goed gebalanseerd en daardie sportbeginsels het hy ook in sy persoonlike lewe toegepas, het Jassiem gesê.

“Ons wat hom sien groei het in krieket, het gevoel hy het te vroeg uitgetree; hy kon ’n nog groter bydrae tot krieket gemaak het.

“Na sy uittrede was hy nie vir die klub of die provinsie verlore nie, want hy het ’n sportwinkel in Wynberg gehad. Spelers wat vir verteenwoordigende spanne gekies is, kon enige tyd by sy winkel ’n draai maak, van sy kennis put om hulle met hul groei in hul sport te help,” het Jassiem gesê.

Beresford Williams, president van WPKrieketunie en ’n voormalige spanmaat en teenstander, het Fagmie as ’n uitstekende krieketspeler en ambassadeur van albei sportsoorte beskryf.

“In die verlede is ons op grond van ons ras en geloof verdeel en het ons talle geleenthede om ons land te verteenwoordig, misgeloop. Fagmie sou SA in albei sportsoorte met trots kon verteenwoordig, maar hy is weens apartheid nie die kans gegun nie,” het Williams gesê.

“Groenpunt-baan was sy tuisveld in krieket en hy was vir al die kannetjies in die Bo-Kaap en die res van die WP ’n rolmodel, want hy het leierskapvaardighede en leiereienskappe gehad.
