hat was initially a holiday programme structured for only 50 children has now grown to accommodate an additional 20 to 30 children on a daily basis, says Pastor Charmaine Hendricks from the Kingdom Rehoboth Community based in Happy Valley, The programme, hosted by the Kingdom Rehoboth Community in partnership with the Department of Community Safety, took place at Happy Valley Primary School from Monday 11 to Friday 15 December. Learners from the school and the surrounding areas were seen to be interacting with the local police when TygerBurger paid

dren, aged four to 14, busy with fun activities, but also provided them with breakfast and lunch and a party pack to take home at the end of the day. The children were also tasked with making up their own rules for the week. “Firstly we decided that the blowing of the whistle means that everyone must be quiet and listen; secondly, that everyone must love one another, and thirdly that they should respect one another,” explains Hendricks. “We worked on these rules on a daily basis.” She says that the entire week was focused on working on the mind of the child. “I hope that what they have learnt here, the lessons of loving and caring for one another, will stay with them for many years to come.”

Hendricks says the children enjoyed selfdefence training, a visit from the clinic to discuss the topics of HIV/Aids and hygiene, a visit from representatives of the Bosasa Youth Development Centre, and a fun and relaxing day during which they played some sport and competitive games. She says the programme was initiated due to a need that was identified within the community. “It is so wonderful how God and the school have allowed us to do this,” says Hendricks. “There is a need for this, as our children are usually alone at home and this can lead to them being exploited.” The programme not only kept the chil-
