ard 14 councillor Roelf Mare and ward 16 councillor Jerome Fitz count illegal dumping as the most pressing problem within their wards.

Mare’s ward includes parts of Eerste River, Happy Valley, Zevenwacht, Jagtershof, Blackheath Industria, Penhill, Blue Downs CBD and Dennemere, while Fitz’s ward includes Forest Village, parts of Eerste River, Faure, parts of Mfuleni and Electric City.

Mare confirms that the issue of illegal dumping is a major problem within his ward. “We would log complaints with the City and they would come and clean up the dirt, but the very next day residents will have dumped again. The City spends over R350 million on cleaning up illegal dumping.”

Fitz says that residents should make use of the new Faure waste drop-off facility where they can dispose of their waste in a responsible manner.

Furthermore, both Mare and Fitz have

outlined their plans for their respective wards in 2018.

Ward 14 will see the upgrading of parks.

“We have 14 parks in the ward and will start the upgrades in Kleinvlei,” explains Mare.

He relays that the upgrading of all the parks in the ward will take four to five years, with upgrades starting in Kleinvlei and moving on to Parla Park, Greenfields, Dennemere and then Blackheath. The upgrades will include the provision of gym equipment and the installation of a multipurpose pitch.

FROM PAGE 1 Another of Mare’s concerns is finding a safer way for vehicles around the Buttskop level crossing, where 10 children were killed in 2010 when their taxi driver ignored the lowered booms, causing a collision with an oncoming train.

He says that currently the City is still in negotiations with the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (Prasa), as the land belongs to the organisation.

“We are looking into finding a safer way around the crossing, as well as upgrading the intersection, and have come up with a few options,” says Mare.

These options include implementing better technology so that cars cannot “zig-zag” through the booms, building a bridge over the crossing or building a subway underneath the crossing.

“The ultimate objective would be to take the crossing out of the equation,” he says.

Furthermore, the upgrading of the Frederick Street intersection next to the railway line will start in August.

“The intersection where Frederick Street meets Buttskop Road will be rerouted as a means of getting rid of the traffic congestion,” explains Mare.

The councillor has also confirmed that mixed housing will be built in the area located between Saxenburg Park and Welmoed Cemetery.

“The project, which is being spearheaded by the provincial Human Settlements Department, is still in its consultant stages,” he says. “I am very excited because we have

not seen a development like this in years and it will most certainly be to the benefit of many backyard dwellers.”

Although Mare has expressed his excitement regarding the project, he says that civil work might only start in 2020 as botanical, historical and environmental studies are still being conducted. “We’ll nurse this project until it reaches maturity,” he says.

Mare says that his focus for 2018 is service delivery. This includes seeing to residents’ complaints regarding potholes and streetlights. He also says that he will be focusing on youth training programmes, which will include home-based care and first aid training, so that the local youth will be more equipped to find proper work.

Another of his priorities will be to look after the senior citizens in his ward.

“Last year we took a group of senior citizens up Table Mountain in the cable car and I will never forget how excited they were, as many of them had never been before,” says Mare.

Among his ward’s achievements and highlights during last year were the establishment of three new neighbourhood watches, the upgrading of Kleinvlei Park, and the completion of sidewalks in Evergreen Street.

Meanwhile, ward 16 will see Fitz focusing on the cleaning of the local canal.

“The main objective of the clean-up is to encourage residents to take ownership of the canal and the surrounding areas,” he explains. A team of voluntary residents will

start the clean-up project within the coming month. Residents who would like to assist with the official clean-up can visit the councillor at the Eerste River Multipurpose Centre or contact his office on 021 902 5000.

Furthermore, Fitz reminds residents to make the saving of water a priority.

“I want to remind residents that I have an open-door policy and that they are more than welcome to visit me with their complaints and problems,” says Fitz. The councillor is at the Eerste River Multipurpose Centre on Mondays and Wednesdays from 09:00 to 15:00 and in Mfuleni at the Mfuleni Hall in School Street on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 09:00 to 15:00.

Fitz also asks that residents be vigilant of fire hazards, as many wendyhouses burnt down during the festive season due to electrical shortages.

“I ask that residents please be vigilant, as it is heartbreaking to see residents lose all their belongings in a fire,” he says.

Among the highlights of 2017 for ward 16 were the opening of the Faure waste-drop off facility, as well as the construction of sidewalks in Warrantha Street.

Fitz also asks that residents be aware that requests for speed bumps are being seen to and that the approval process can take anywhere from six to eight months.

“I wish the residents of ward 16 well and look forward to working alongside them during the coming year,” says Fitz.

Sixteen-year-old Shamiela from Florida High School has been selected as a member of the u.18 South African ladies’ touch rugby team, which will be representing South Africa at the 2018 Federation of International Touch (FIT) Youth World Cup. The World Cup, which will be taking place in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, from Wednesday 8 to Saturday 11 August, presents Muller and her teammates with a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to represent their country at the highest level.

However, the estimated cost of R50 000 per player poses a massive financial obstacle, says Muller’s mother, Brunette Muller.

In a sponsorship letter issued by the South African Touch Association (SATA) president, Glenn Clarke, he says that touch rugby receives no national subsidy and all players’ costs for any tournaments and representation of their country or province are self-funded.

Brunette is a single mother who works as a messenger and also as an office cleaner over the weekends. She says that she has done everything she possibly can to raise the necessary funds. “Shamiela and I have held raffles and sold curry bunnies and

However, the R10 000 raised is not enough as the players are required to pay R20 000 by the end of January and then the rest of the money in increments of R5000 every month.

the age of 14, when she was encouraged by one of her teachers to join the school team.

“I played well in the matches, resulting in me being selected on a constant basis. I fell in love with the sport,” she says.

After her introduction to the sport, Shamiela started playing in the Western Province Sevens women’s team in 2015. She then participated in the Junior Interprovincial Touch (JIPT) tournament in the women’s u.17 team in 2016 where she received her Western Cape Touch colours and a certificate for being the best stepper. In 2017 she started playing for Tygerberg Rugby Football Club where she received a trophy as well as three certificates and a medal for her achievements with the team in 2017.

“I enjoy playing in a team because we encourage and inspire one another to do better. The friendships we have developed and the way in which we can depend on one another are awesome,” she says. Furthermore she says that she enjoys playing rugby because it keeps her busy and fit. “In my free time I read a lot and listen to music – and yes, I do my schoolwork as well,” she laughs. “I also play netball for my church and do athletics at school.”

She counts Business Studies as her favourite subject at school and says that it will assist her in the future when she appoints a manager or when she wants to start and manage her own business.

She relays that her plans for the future include playing touch rugby professionally and going to university to study law.

Shamiela understands, however, that women in sport are not given as much exposure as their male counterparts. “The shortage of media coverage for female sports in South Africa is nothing new. The argument often used is that women are not physically as strong as males and that their sport is not worth covering,” she explains. “Women who play rugby are often described or classified as being ‘butch’, which is incredibly sexist and which leads to us struggling with sponsorships. Women in sport have to rely heavily on our support network consisting of our coaches, family and friends. I think we still have a long way to go, but we will get there.”

Shamiela says that being able to go to Kuala Lumpur in August would be a dream come true, but the lack of funds is a real challenge.

“Any contribution would be truly appreciated, as my mother and I have approached various shops and banks for sponsorships without any luck. We have held raffles and a number of cake sales,” she says. “I just want the chance to make my dream come true – that’s all I ask.”

I

n recent weeks local residents have been surprised by the installation of water meters at their homes, resulting in an increase in their monthly water bill.

This is what happened to Kuils River resident Gail Brinkhuis, who found the City of Cape Town had installed a water meter without her knowledge.

“We went to the municipal office in Kuils River to query why a bill of R4000 was being charged to our account. The consultant informed me that this was indeed a fine imposed on me because of excessive water usage,” says Brinkhuis.

According to Mayoral Committee member for informal settlements, water and waste services and energy, Xanthea Limberg, the City introduced the roll-out and setting of these devices as part of level 4b water restrictions, as a means of restricting water for properties with excessive water consumption. “These devices are installed and set to a daily limit on properties that have not been able to justify their excessive water use,” explains Limberg. The additional R4000 is what the City charges to cover the cost of the device and installation.

She assures residents that this measure will only be taken if excessive users have failed to reduce water use to an acceptable level, which as of 1 January 2018 is 10.5kl per household per month, as per the introduction of level 6 restrictions.

Furthermore, Limberg says that engagements will continue with excessive users, with letters being sent to them. “Where they cannot reasonably explain the need for the excessive use, we will restrict the daily water allocation to their property.

Water management devices are set to allow for a certain amount of water to be used each day, so if the restrictions are adhered

to, this limit will not be reached,” explains Limberg.

However, Brinkhuis says that the water meter installed to limit the water use of her household has been installed without her consent. “We are being billed an additional R400 per month for water but we are only receiving 350 litres per day,” she says.

“We are a household of five members and we are entitled to 87 litres per day each. The prescribed 350 litres per day does not warrant five household members.”

Limberg says that residents will receive a warning letter stating that their property has been identified as an excessive user before the installation of a water management device. The relevant household will then be given a month in which to reduce the consumption of water or to make representations. “Should the customer fail to reduce consumption on the property or not make representations to the City to justify excessive usage, the City will proceed with en-

forcement,” confirms Limberg. Furthermore she says that the City does not need to liaise with the resident beforehand, as the meter is the City’s property.

“The device is set to allow 350 litres to the property per day. These customers would have received a warning letter along with the municipal bill and a letter to advise of the installation.”

Residents who have had the water management device installed and are unable to pay can enter into a payment plan with the City that is based on what they can afford.

“So long as they stick to this arrangement, action to recoup the debt, such as disconnection of services, will be suspended.”

“We will continue to roll out these devices to high-consumption households because we cannot allow the abuse of water to continue in this time of severe water scarcity.

Facebook group raises funds for learners JAY­DEE CYSTER @jaydeecyster

W

hat initially started as a mere idea on Sunday 14 January has now blossomed into a project showcasing the generosity of Eerste River, Blue Downs and Blackheath residents.

The project was initiated by Fagmie Meyer, the creator of the Eerste River, Blue Downs and Blackheath Facebook group, when he put out a call to the group members asking them to assist in raising funds for local learners in need.

Meyer says the idea just popped into his head on that Sunday and that when posting it on the group page, he did not think it would evoke the response it has thus far.

What Meyer suggested was that the group members raise funds and then approach the principal of a local school and ask him or her to identify one or two needy learners. The funds would then be used to purchase school uniforms for these learners.

“Since the start of this we have raised R1300,” Meyer told TygerBurger on Friday 19 January.

He says that members of the group have pledged not only money, but stationery as well. “This is an initiative by the community, for the community,” he explains.

“Even if we are only able to assist one or two children, we know that it can make all the difference.”

He says the handing over of the clothes and stationery will take place soon, as the school year has already started and the learners will need these items.

A

fter a massive outcry from Capetonians about the controversial drought charge they deemed unfair, it was scrapped on Friday as the City council passed a new punitive water tariff to be imposed on residents as of February.

The new tariff will charge residents exponentially higher rates for water usage above 6000 litres per month.

For consumption of more than 6000 litres per month, the current water tariff for the total household bill will increase from R28 to R145.

For consumption of more than 10 500 litres per month, it will increase from R109 to R390.

For consumption of more than 35 000 litres, consumers will now pay R6939 per month, up from the previous R1050.

For more than 50 000 litres per month the cost is R20 619, up from R2888.

Mayor Patricia de Lille’s powers to deal with the drought unilaterally were also taken away and will now be shared by the mayoral committee as a whole.

This means that the executive director for water affairs, Gisela Kaiser, will be reporting final outcomes to the deputy mayor, Ian Neilson, and the Mayco member for water affairs, Xanthea Limberg.

City moving to level 6B restrictions De Lille on Thursday said the City has reached a point of no return and that Day Zero on 21 April is now very likely.

“Despite our urging for months, 60% of Capetonians are callously using more than 87 litres per day.

“It is quite unbelievable that a majority of people do not seem to care and are sending all of us headlong towards Day Zero,” she said.

She added that provision will be made for households larger than four people to ensure they are not unfairly penalised.

Furthermore, the City will be moving to level 6B restrictions with a new limit of 50 litres per person per day.

This is to make up for the many months of missing the 500 million litres per day collective consumption target.

The new restrictions will come into effect on 1 February 2018.

“This will be in place for 150 days, after which the City will reassess the situation. Level 6B restrictions will also limit irrigation using boreholes and wellpoints.”

In the City’s advanced planning for Day Zero, approximately 200 sites have been assessed as collection points for water, she said.

“The City will be announcing everyone’s local collection points from next week so that communities can begin preparing for that eventuality.

We will also be making detailed Day Zero contingency plans available soon to answer all questions that residents and businesses might have.”

Help police find missing man (21) P

olice are seeking the public’s assistance in finding a 21-year-old missing man from Dennemere.

According to Kleinvlei police spokesperson, Captain Florina Muller, Graeme Dominic Sauls from Feye Noord Street in Dennemere went missing from his mother’s house at around 16:00 on Saturday 30 December 2017.

According to his mother, Margaret Sauls, her son suffers from a mental condition.

“Graeme usually went to visit his friends at Jacobsdal Farm in Kuils River. The family went to search for him there, but could not find him,” explains Muller.

Sauls was last seen wearing a blue tracksuit top with grey shoulders and black pants with a red stripe. He is about 1.5m tall and has brown eyes, black hair and a white birthmark at the back of his neck.

N

orthlink College’s Parow campus is giving young people a second opportunity to better their lives by taking part in the Safety in Society programme.

Those who have passed grades 9, 10 and 11 are eligible to apply for this programme.

According to the college’s programme manager, Wyatt Thornton, the three-year programme, which is free of charge, is pegged at NQF level 4, which is equivalent to matric.

“The programme was started in 2008 in order to enhance the Law Enforcement agencies,” says Thornton.

On Friday 12 January, the last 50 candidates were registered for the programme. In total, there are now 215 candidates for the course.

“On completion of the programme the student will be in possession of a certificate and can apply to Law Enforcement agencies of their choice.

“It must be kept in mind that if applying to Law Enforcement agencies, the students must comply with the requirements of the specific agency to which they are applying,” says Thornton.

He adds that by recruiting from the local community, the institution aims to help alleviate unemployment, get the youth off the streets, and give desperate youths a better future.

“About 200 young people wanted to join the programme that morning, but only 50

could be selected as this was the last round of selection and registration.

“In those who were not successful in registering for the programme, I saw a hunger for learning in their eyes,” says Walker.

She explains that she spoke to the unsuccessful candidates to motivate them and encourage them to explore other study options.

“I felt blessed, as some of them came back to me with smiles on their faces, saying they

had been accepted in another field.

“I wish all Safety in Society students the very best in their future study endeavours.

“We are beginning this year on a very good note.

“It is music to my ears when young people want to become something in life,” says Walker.

Beursaansoeke steeds aanvaar as daar plek is AVRIL FILLIES Aansoeke vir die beurse, die Nasionale Studiehulpskema (NSFAS) en die Nasionale Vaardigheidsfonds (NSF), word steeds by kampusse van Northlink-kollege aanvaar, tensy daar plek is vir die kursus wat die student wil volg.

“Die aansoektydperk vir die NSFAS-beurs het verlede jaar November gesluit en indien daar steeds plek is vir die kursus wat die student wil volg, moet die student die aansoekvorm saam met die beursbeampte aanlyn invul,” het Ivan Swart, woordvoerder van Northlink-kollege, gesê.

Die registrasietydperk vir die NSFASbeurs was amptelik van 9 tot 12 Januarie, maar is verleng tot Vrydag 19 Januarie.

“Matrikulante wat onlangs hul uitslae

ontvang het, word aangeraai om die kampus waar hulle wil studeer, te bel om te hoor of daar nog plek is. Indien daar nie plek is nie, is studiegeleenthede nie verlore nie.

“Ons sal aanbeveel dat hulle vanaf Februarie aansoek doen vir die volgende semester of trimester,” het Swart gesê.

Die vereistes om vir ’n NFSAS-beurs te kwalifiseer, is dat jy die eerste keer as student vir ’n graad registreer. Jy moet ’n SuidAfrikaanse burger wees en die gesamentlike jaarlikse inkomste van die gesin moet nie meer as R350 000 wees nie.

“Ons hou jaarliks in Augustus ons ope dag waar ons leerders van die verskeie skole in ons gemeenskappe per bus na die kampusse aanry.

“Die voornemende studente kry dan regstreeks blootstelling aan ons werksessies.

“Ons nooi ook ander belangstellendes om ons voor Augustus te bel as hulle ook die kampusse wil besoek. Ons wil almal dus die kans gee om die kampus te besoek en vir een dag ’n ‘student’ te wees,” het Swart gesê.

Diegene wat vir 2019 wil aansoek doen, se aansoeke sal eers vanaf Junie aanvaar word.

“Hulle sal dus aansoek doen met hul Junie-uitslae.

“Die bedrag van die beurs wissel van kursus tot kursus en NSFAS bepaal die bedrag.

“Hulle bepaal ook die toekenning daarvan in die volgorde van eers klasgeld, boeke, verblyf en laastens vervoer.

“Ons het ’n ooreenkoms met Northville, wat ons verblyf hanteer vir studente wat van ander dele van die land wil kom studeer. Studente kan hulle regstreeks by 082 480 1204 skakel,” het hy gesê.

Hy het gesê dat van die kursusse by Northlink reeds vol is, maar daar is nog plek in sekere kursusse beskikbaar.

Studente wat wil aansoek doen vir die NSF-beurs moet ’n minimum van N2, ’n tegniese gr. 12-kwalifikasie met ’n ambagsvak of vier N2-vakke met ’n ambagsvlak geslaag het.

“Die student moet ook medies geskik wees en ook vir enige van die kollege se vaardigheidskursusse aansoek doen. Die beurs dek die studiemateriaal, maar sluit nie enige toelae in nie.

“Vir meer inligting kan mense die kampusse of 0860 065 465 bel, en ons sal hulle na die kampus van hul keuse verwys,” sê Swart.

Sy ‘plakkerskamp­musiek’ nou op radiostasie AVRIL FILLIES Rapmusiek was sy lewe en Wallacedene se Mzwakhe Poya, ook bekend as Theo, het nooit gedink dat sy musiek oor die bekende radiostasie Five FM gespeel sal word nie.

“Ek het maar klein begin en my musiek in die plakkershut geskryf en gespeel. My bure het my aangemoedig om die musiek na ’n vervaardiger te neem sodat dit opgeneem kan word. Die radiostasie Five FM het van my musiek in die hande gekry, dit oor die lug gespeel en skielik was daar ’n groot aanvraag. Toe TygerBurger verlede jaar daaroor berig het, het dinge so vinnig gebeur dat ek my eerste CD in November verlede jaar die lig laat sien het,” het hy gesê.

Radiostasies het bontgestaan om sy musiek in die hande te kry en om onderhoude met hom te voer nadat die berig in die koerant was. Hy woon nie meer in Wallacedene nie, maar woon nou in Brackenfell.

“Danksy my ontmoeting met David Moha-

le, ook bekend as Stabber, by die plaaslike Spar, is die eerste CD uitgereik,” het Poya gesê. Mohale is ’n bekende in musiekkringe en het al verskeie kunstenaars se CD’s vervaardig en bemark en hy het my nou ook onder sy vlerk geneem,” het hy gesê.

“Ek het op ’n dag gaan inkopies doen by ons plaaslike Spar en Theo daar ontmoet.

“Ons het begin gesels en agtergekom dat ons albei van musiek hou en ’n musiekagtergrond het. Hy het my toe vertel van sy musiek wat op Five FM gespeel word en ek het hom na my huis in Brackenfell genooi en ons het sy eerste CD, Hey Wena, in November in my motorhuis opgeneem,” het Mohale gesê.

“My ateljee is klein, maar ek hoop dat ons nog talle treffers hier sal maak. Ons moet net ’n borg kry om ons te help om die treffers die lig te laat sien, en hopelik sal ander radiostasies ons ook nader om ons musiek te speel,” het Mohale gesê.

Albei wil ook ander plaaslike kunstenaars help om hul musiek die lig te laat sien.

“Al help ons die kunstenaars net om ’n demo saam te stel of om te help om hul liedjies te verfyn sodat dit bemark kan word, wil ons dit doen. Theo se nuwe CD, Glory, word in Junie uitgereik,” het Mohale gesê.

“Die nuwe CD is om dankie vir die Here te sê vir die verandering wat in my lewe gebeur het. Die CD bestaan uit tien liedjies en ek hoop dit sal ook netso gewild wees soos die vorige een. Baie mense het al genoem dat die koorgedeelte van Hey Wena in jou kop bly en hopelik is daar iets op die nuwe CD wat dieselfde gaan doen,” het Poya gesê.

Nadat sy lewensomstandighede verander het, wil hy ook nou uitreik na die jeug in Kraaifontein.

“Ons almal weet hier is baie talentvolle kinders in ons woongebied, maar nie almal kry kans om hul talent te bevorder nie. Ek wil vanjaar probeer om iets hieraan te doen,” het hy gesê.

N eighbourhood W atch A wards Neighbourhood Watch Awards DESIRÉE RORKE

N

eighbourhood watches in the northern suburbs of Cape Town have until 31 January to submit nominations for watches and their members who went above and beyond the call of duty during the course of 2017, for the 2018 Neighbourhood Watch (NHW) Awards.

“The Neighbourhood Watch Awards 2018 will honour accredited neighbourhood watches in the City. The different categories in the 2018 NHW Awards are designed to honour the many different ways in which NHW members contribute towards safety,” says Western Cape minister of community safety, Dan Plato.

Mayco member for social services, safety and security in the City, JP Smith, says neighbourhood watches are force multipliers in the fight against crime.

“The watches, together with Law Enforcement, Metro Police and other safety entities, are transforming our City to become a safer environment.

“The work watches do contributes significantly towards building safer communities in Cape Town.

“Their members dedicate their time and often some of their own resources towards this goal,” he says.

Over the last decade, the City has invested millions of rand in training volunteers and providing NHW organisations with equipment like jackets, torches, bicycles, handheld radios and radio base stations for their watch rooms, and has partnered with these organisations to install and share information between CCTV camera networks.

“The reason we invest so much in our NHWs is because we have seen the positive impact that they are making in their communities.”

According to Plato, the legal framework

for NHW structures in the Western Cape, created in 2017, provides legal legitimacy to all those NHW structures that are successfully accredited.

Since its inception, about 200 NHWs across the province have been issued with certificates of accreditation.

“In September 2017, DoCS signed a historic Neighbourhood Watch Memorandum of Agreement with the City of Cape Town to coordinate our support for accredited NHWs across the City,” he adds.

“The NHW Awards will showcase our appreciation for our NHWs and their members as treasured safety partners.”

Categories Anyone can nominate an individual member or an entire NHW team. You can also nominate the same person or team for more than one award category, but will need to submit individual nominations for each of them.

Bronze Category: For NHW Teams of Distinction (these awards will not be presented at the awards ceremony, but instead will be chosen from among the nominations and the judges’ experience during 2017) . Community Service Excellence: for noteworthy excellence displayed in any form. . Education Support Excellence: for excellence in support of school and scholar safety, in particular support for the Department of Community Safety-led Walking Bus programme. . Skills Training Excellence: recognises the development of a wide range of skills for comprehensive community safety and support. . How to nominate: . Only NHW members or teams that are accredited with DoCS or who have formally submitted their application for accreditation can be nominated. . Nominations can only be submitted online from Monday 1 January to Wednesday 31 January at 17:00. . When completing your online nomination, you will need to provide a body of evidence to support the nomination.

The NHW Awards for 2017 will be held on Friday, 23 February 2018.

Two judging panels will assess the nominations received from each of the four City areas. The panels will consist of representatives from the City, the Department of Community Safety and the SAPS. The finalists will be notified on 12 February 2018 and will receive an invitation to the awards ceremony.

VARSITY­SKILD: AGSTE KRIEKETTOERNOOI SKOP IN POTCHEFSTROOM AF

Strawwe begin vir UWK AVRIL FILLIES

D

ie agtste Varsity-kriekettoernooi skop op Maandag 29 Januarie op Senwespark in Potchefstroom af wanneer die Universiteit van Wes-Kaapland van 18:00 tot 21:10 teen die tuisspan, Noordwes-universiteit (NWU), die huidige T20-titelhouers, te staan kom.

Die toernooi val saam met die jool en die begin van die nuwe akademiese jaar en eindig op Saterdag 3 Februarie.

Die universiteite wat deelneem, is NWU, Maties, Ikeys, UWK, Tuks, UJ, CUT en die Madibaz.

Die eerste wedstryde skop om 14:00 af en benewens Senwespark, word wedstryde ook op die NWU-Puk- en Ibbies-Oval beslis.

Tuks pak CUT, Ikeys die Madibaz en UJ die Maties.

Pukke het twee agtereenvolgende jare in die eindstryd vasgeval, maar het verlede jaar die beker omhoog gehou toe hulle Tuks met vier paaltjies geklop het. Wihan Lubbe het die voorbeeld vir die wenners gestel, toe hy nie net as die Samsung-speler van die wedstryd nie, maar ook as die FNB-beste

bouler van die wedstryd aangewys is.

CUT is die nuweling in die toernooi nadat hy met Kovsies in Oktober afgereken het.

Die Power Play Plus-reël sal vir vuurwerke sorg, want alle kolwers sal die langsteel wil inlê om maksimumpunte in te samel.

Dié reël gee die kolfspan dubbelpunte in die beurt van hul keuse en hulle kan ook die bouler kies van wie hulle lopies wil moker.

Die reël bepaal ook dat as ’n span ’n paaltjie verloor, hy ook vyf lopies afstaan.

Jana Arlow, bestuurder van Varsity-krieket, is baie opgewonde oor die 2018-seisoen en hoe die toernooi krieket in Suid-Afrika in geheel gaan baat.

“Verlede jaar het ons ’n rekordgetal toeskouers gehad en ek sien daarna uit om te sien of ons op dié getal kan verbeter.

“Die voordeel wat die nasionale krieketontwikkelingsprogram uit die toernooi kry, is sigbaar. Agt van die voorste universiteite in die land pak mekaar in ’n beroepsomgewing,” het sy gesê.

Twee spelers van Tuks het van Varsitykrieket gevorder totdat hulle vandag die Proteas verteenwoordig.

“Aiden Markram het in 2015 Varsity-krie-

ket gespeel. En die man wat deesdae op almal se lippe is, Lungi Ngidi, het in 2015 en 2016 gespeel.

“Albei is steunpilare in die Protea-span en Ngidi het met sy skitterende boulwerk die reeks teen Indië vir die Proteas beklink,” het sy gesê.

Diegene wat nie die wedstryde in Potchefstroom kan bywoon nie, kan tuis daarna kyk op Woensdag 31 Januarie, Vrydag 2 Februarie en Saterdag 3 Februarie op SuperSport 210.

Al die halfeindstryde en die eindstryd word ook uitgesaai.

UWK se ander wedstryde is: 30 Januarie teen UJ; 31 Januarie teen Ikeys; 1 Februarie teen CUT die oggend en Maties die middag; 2 Februarie teen Madibaz die oggend en Tuks die middag; 3 Februarie word die twee halfeindstryde en die eindstryd beslis.
