Tererai Muchabaiwa from Malibu High School received a learner subject award for excellence in Physical Sciences at the National Senior Certificate Awards, which took place at Leeuwenhof, the premier’s residence, on Thursday 11 January.

The awards served as a means of acknowledging learners for excellence in subject performance, as well as those learners who per-

formed well despite barriers to learning.

Premier Helen Zille also awarded two learners with a special ministerial award, as well as learners who placed in the top 50 in the province.

Muchabaiwa, who resides in Malibu, was one of three learners within the province to obtain a mark of 100% in Physical Sciences.

“I practised constantly and worked through a past paper almost every day,” he says. “I knew it was possible to achieve a perfect score.”

Muchabaiwa and his parents hail from Zimbabwe, having moved to South Africa nine years ago. He attended Spurwing Primary School before moving on to Malibu High School. He says that his mother, a housewife, and his father, a mechanic, are both incredibly proud of his achievement in the NSC examinations.

He received an A not only in Physical Sciences, but also in Mathematics (89%), Life Sciences (80%) and Accounting (83%).

Muchabaiwa says that his secret was to not only do as his teacher, Charlton Josephs, said, but to go above and beyond what was required from him during class.

He is currently awaiting a response from Stellenbosch University on his application

to study Chemical Engineering. “My dream is to someday complete my PhD in Chemical Engineering, as I would like to start a humanitarian organisation where I not only help to improve the lives of others, but encourage them to give back and strive to improve the lives of those they come across,” Muchabaiwa explains.

ayden Rogers, a 14-year-old learner at Blackheath High School who wrote his very first book, It’s Just Life, at the age of 10, says that his love for reading and writing was encouraged by his parents.

The young author says that reading has always served as a means of escape for him.

“The idea of other worlds just beyond my grasp encased between two covers blew my mind,” he explains.

Rogers, who is the middle of three boys, started writing his novel while he was still in Grade 6. “I was reaching the end of my Grade 6 year and the workload had sufficiently lessened, so it wasn’t that difficult to balance schoolwork and writing,” he explains. “At the time I hadn’t thought that my book would even be published, so I wasn’t writing it under a deadline.”

He describes his novel as a light read telling the story of a girl named Raquelle Marie, who escapes from the prison built for her by her godparents. Raquelle then sets out to find her aunt and uncle after finding a letter from her deceased parents in the attic. Rogers says that the writing of the book was motivated by an urge inside of him.

“My brain was filled with thoughts, ideas and plots driving me insane, so I took the task of writing them down. When I put pen to paper, my hand just moved and the words fell into place,” he explains.

For Rogers, writing – whether it be poetry or stories – is something he is definitely going to pursue as a career after finishing school.

He plans to model the success of his favourite author Jeff Kinney, who wrote his favourite book, Diary of a Wimpy Kid. Rogers, who is in Grade 9, serves on the representative council of learners (RCL).

The young author promises that this is only the beginning of his career in literature, adding that he is in the process of writing a new novel.

L

ocal police are urging residents to form street committees as a means of combating the scourge of house break-ins within the community.

According to Kleinvlei police spokesperson, Captain Florina Muller, several house break-ins within the area are reported on a daily basis.

“Some days there are two incidents and other days there can be up to six break-ins,” she explains.

Muller confirms that these break-ins take place throughout the day, with the majority taking place in the early morning when residents have just left for work, between midday and 16:00 and then in the evening from 21:00 until early the next morning.

Kleinvlei police station commander, Colonel Richard Koopman, has also issued a plea to the community of the Greater Blue Downs, particularly residents of Kleinvlei, Melton Rose, Eerste River, Malibu Village, Conifers and Blackheath, to be more vigilant and protective of their homes.

“House break-ins occur every day and we as the police try our utmost best to patrol the areas to prevent them, but we cannot do it alone,” says Koopman.

“The police need the help of the community to form street committees that enable them to look after their own as well as their neighbours’ houses.”

According to Muller, valuable property often stolen includes television sets, laptops, speakers, music equipment, cellphones, jewellery, kettles and other smaller items.

As a means of preventing break-ins, Muller urges residents to not only form street committees but to get to know their neighbours, exchange numbers and communicate with one another.

“Build good neighbourly relationships and be the eyes and ears for one another,” advises Muller.

“If unknown vehicles park in front of your house or you see strangers in the vicinity, call the police or neighbourhood watch members in the area as they will be glad to assist.”

She says that the street committees play

an important role, as the majority of perpetrators are caught with the assistance of local residents, as they can often only be identified if they are seen committing the crime.

Furthermore, Muller encourages residents to have an alarm system installed or to get a dog. “Rather have an alarm or dog, which can act as a warning system, because having valuable items stolen which you cannot replace is tough,” advises Muller.

She also advises that homeowners not leave any implements, such as gardening tools, lying around as these can become the same tools that are used to break in.

The community of the Greater Blue Downs precinct are invited to report any suspicious persons or activities to their respective sector commanders.

3 arrested for spike in ‘Uber’ crimes T

hree men were arrested for their suspected involvement in 17 cases of hijacking, robbery and kidnapping of metered taxi drivers, including those of the Uber service.

The suspects, aged between 21 and 29

years, were arrested on Wednesday 3 and Thursday 4 January by the provincial anti-hijacking task team and members of the Brackenfell detective services.

According to provincial police spokesperson, Captain FC van Wyk, the arrests came

after the escalation in the hijacking of Uber and metered taxis in the province since October last year.

Van Wyk confirms that the suspects would order taxis under false pretences and when the driver arrived they would ask to be driven to a particular point.

“On their way there, one of the suspects, who usually sat in the front of the vehicle with the driver, would point a gun at the driver and the one at the back would choke the victim at the same time.

“Thereafter, they would typically rob the driver of his cellphone and other valuables, pull him out of the vehicle and drive away with the vehicle,” explains Van Wyk. Furthermore, in some incidences the driver would be ordered to get into the boot of the car after being robbed.

All 17 reported cases, which took place during the months of October, November

and December, saw the victims describing one, two or three men being involved.

“The bulk of the incidents were reported in the Blue Downs cluster of police stations, namely Kuils River, Kleinvlei and Mfuleni.

“Incidents also occurred in the Brackenfell police precinct, in Stellenbosch, Macassar and Somerset West,” says Van Wyk. The suspects appeared in the Blue Downs Magistrate’s Court on Monday 8 January.

“We urge anyone who has more information about these crimes, or who may have fallen victim to these perpetrators, to come forward and report similar incidents to the investigating officer, Lieutenant Colonel Adrian Pretorius, on 082 777 8499,” Van Wyk says.

“All information will be treated with the utmost confidentiality,” he adds.

Seven youths in custody for school burglary AVRIL FILLIES Seven males between the ages of 15 and 19 years from the Blue Downs area have been remanded in custody for a formal bail application on Friday 19 January.

They were arrested on Friday 29 December at 03:15 after they were caught red handed for burglary at Mfuleni High School.

“Sixteen computers were stolen at Mfuleni High School on 25 December, and on 29 December another break-in occurred at the same high school. Nothing was stolen on 29 December, as they were apprehended,” says Captain Nomathemba Muavha, communi-

cations officer of Mfuleni police.

Captain FC van Wyk, communications officer of the Western Cape police, says the suspects face charges of business burglary and possession of burglary implements.

“Police members responded immediately after they were alerted to the burglary on 29 December, and caught the suspects breaking into the school’s computer room.

“The same school was burgled on Christmas and the suspects fled with the 16 computers.” Anyone with information on the stolen computers is asked to contact Detective Sergeant Giviano Brits on 021 909 9638 or Mfuleni police on 021 909 9618.

Guitarist Lionel Konstabel recently released his debut single, “The Way You Make Me Feel”.

or guitarist and songwriter, Lionel Konstabel from Macassar, the release of his debut single “The Way You Make Me Feel” marks his long overdue venture into a solo career.

Konstabel, who has been playing the guitar since he was about 12 or 13 years old, says that his father, also a lead guitarist, was the musician who inspired his start in the music industry. “I started out playing at church and within the community,” he says. “My dad guided me. He is a very particular man. You must play properly and always be on time,” he laughs.

Konstabel, who has had no formal music training, comes from a musical family where all four of his siblings played instruments. He says that his mastering of the guitar came about by continuously running through the songs. “In this way I was able to develop a style of my own,” he explains.

“I get restless when I haven’t played for the day. Music for me is life.”

His first job as a professional musician came about 23 years ago when he played with the popular local jazz band, N2. After a few years with N2, Konstabel moved to Johannesburg where he spent three years playing for Loyiso Bala and other artists.

He then ventured to Dubai and Singapore, where he performed at various hotels.

Konstabel marks the tragic loss of his eldest brother as his reason for staying in Cape Town. He says that the Faith Chapel in Strand was where he found the necessary support during this time. “The Faith Chapel supported me in pursuing my solo career,” he explains.

He says the unconditional support of his wife, parents and church is what motivated him to record and release “The Way You Make Me Feel”, as he has had to balance both his professional and personal life and would have never been able to do so without the help of these key role players.

He describes his single as a feel-good song with which to start the day. “I wrote the

song two years ago and recorded a demo.

When producer Storm Solomons heard the demo, he offered to produce the single,” he explains. The song features vocals by local female vocalist Naftali Solomons.

“I am so grateful for this good relationship and my hope is to bring along these artists that have helped me, as I continue along my journey,” he says.

Konstabel is currently recording his debut album and says that he would like to release it in the first three months of the new year. “This is a very exciting time,” he smiles.

Konstabel counts local jazz artists Jonathan Rubain and Don Vino Prins, whom he grew up alongside as young musicians, as his friends. “We know where we come from and we pride ourselves in keeping that relationship among ourselves going,” says Konstabel.

When asked who he counts as his greatest inspiration, Konstabel says without hesitation: “Jonathan Butler. Following his career has truly inspired me.” He recounts the day he met Butler. “He [Butler] needed a guitar technician and I was able to fulfil that role,” he says. “I got to spend the day with him, learning from him.”

Konstabel also recounts how he met another of his greatest inspirations, Jimmy Dludlu. “I was still playing with N2 at the time. We were playing in Club 169 in Long Street when I played one of his songs and he just happened to be walking by. Jimmy then came up to me to compliment me on my playing and I was so shocked,” he laughs.

Konstabel says that right now his career is at a very sensitive stage and that he has to be very conscious of his career associations.

He describes the release of his single as a dream come true.

“My dream is not only to further my career but to provide opportunities for younger musicians,” he says.

CWA students graduate with new skills C

ommunity Women Action (CWA) hosted a graduation ceremony for unemployed women and youths from Eerste River and Mfuleni on Friday 22 December.

In partnership with ASLA construction company, the CWA trained 14 women and students with special needs and disabilities in computer and chef skills. “The special computer course was hosted at CWA to empower women living with disabilities,” explains Grant Bellairs from CWA. “Ward 14 councillor, Roelf Mare, handed over the certificates on behalf of ASLA to these five special ladies who, despite their disabilities,

managed to complete a sixmonth course in basic computer skills. They also completed the online examination of the Vaal University,” says Bellairs.

At the event, nine assistant chef students of CWA prepared and served a threecourse meal. Their certificates were handed over by ward 16 councillor, Jerome Fitz, who addressed the graduating students. The assistant chef training was accredited by the Culture, Art, Tourism, Hospitality and Sport Sector Education and Training Authority (CathsSeta) and was funded by the Ikamva Youth and Entrepreneurship Development Cooperative.

lle paaie lei Saterdag na die Kaapstadstadion vir die derbystryd tussen Ajax Cape Town en Cape Town City om te bepaal wie die spogregte van die stad het.

Sedert Cape Town City sy debuut in die Premier-sokkerliga gemaak het, moes Ajax in al hul kragmetings tweede viool speel.

Ajax het sy laaste tuiswedstryd teen Platinum Stars met 3-0 gewen, terwyl Cape Town City stert tussen die bene huis toe gestuur is deur Free State Stars nadat die tuisspan hom met 1-0 geklop het.
