Drama on the streets Warrant Officer Wayne Theunis, sets the scene when he states: “At about 11:15, two men were robbed at gunpoint of R350 000, after they withdrew the money originally in Montague Gardens.” They were robbed of the money by three suspects – at least one armed with a 9mm pistol – in Riley Street, Parow. Lieutenant Kevin J Williams, spokesperson for Parow police, continues: “The complainant and his father pulled over at their business premises. He was still busy on his cellphone when he heard a knock on his window. He saw a man pointing a firearm towards him, while another pointed a firearm towards his father. The camplainant was instructed by the suspects to hand over the money to them.” The suspects then jumped into a grey Polo, which the complainant

A remarkable sequence of events led to the arrest of two suspects for armed robbery and hijacking on Thursday. Three suspects allegedly stole more than R350 000 in cash from a father and his son in Montague Gardens. Then they fled in a Volkswagen Polo, hijacked a truck, collided against three other vehicles and finally jumped into a taxi before the two were arrested by Elsies River police. The third suspect managed to escape and the money has not yet been recovered. Parow, Elsies River and Goodwood police all joined in the outrageous chase, which started in Parow. Goodwood Police spokesperson,
pursued. Williams states that the suspects fired towards the complainant’s vehicle, but no one was hit. Parow Police immediately started chasing the Polo, which resulted in the suspects abandoning the vehicle and fleeing on foot through properties next to the road. Theunis continues: “In Elsies River three of the suspects hijacked a He & She truck in Halt Road at 11:40. By that time members of Elsies River and Goodwood joined the chase.” He & She is a driving school company, and at the time of the hijacking, the instructor Jack Qangiso (43), was teaching a young man how to operate the truck. Qangiso spoke to TygerBurger about their ordeal: “A man came to the client’s window and said he must jump. I said ‘No, man. Why
must he jump? We are not going to take nonsense from you.’ Then he pulled out a pistol, cocked it in front of us and I told the client to get out. Two other men jumped from a house next to the road into the truck. “The man behind the wheel struggled to get away and I could see he is not going to get far. It all happened so fast, just a blink of the eye. I always see these things in movies. I never thought it will happen to me!” The fleeing suspects apparently hit three other vehicles, which included a Golden Arrow bus, as the driver was having trouble controlling the four-ton truck. According to Lieutenant Colonel Andrè Traut, spokesperson for the provincial police, it was fortunate that no-one was injured when the truck hit all and sundry.

Traut says: “In Oxford Street the suspects decided to abandon the vehicle in an attempt to escape being arrested, and jumped into a minibus taxi, but their luck ran out when the officers arrested two of the three suspects. The third one managed to escape, and he must still be arrested. A 9mm firearm with the serial number removed, was confiscated.” One of the directors of He & She Driving School, Joyce Goosen, admits that when she arrived on the scene she openly exclaimed, “Thank God Jack and the client didn’t get injured!” Williams concludes: “The two suspects, aged 25 and 35 years are from Philippi and Langa respectively. They are both in custody at Parow police holding cells.” The suspects appeared in court on Monday morning.
