iving back and giving hope is the aim of a group of DJs from Bishop Lavis who hosted their very first soup kitchen and fun day for children in their community.

Initiated earlier this year by Keegan Cox, co-founder of Purple Heart Beats Entertainment, with the aim of bringing DJs from all

walks of life and communities together, they are now using their profits to give back.

“We have always wanted to make a difference in our community, to create an atmosphere where everyone can get together and have fun,” he says.

Cox says he never thought he would receive as much support as he did when he first mentioned his wish to host a soup drive and provide entertainment to young people in his community. “The support has been

truly overwhelming and heartwarming to see that so many people want to do exactly the same, which is to give back. I am very excited about what we have managed to pull together and hope to host many more of these events,” he says. Cox says he knows that many of the children in the community do not have role models, while some look up to gangsters. “I live in this community so I know the struggles and difficult choices people make between right and wrong, drugs,

alcohol and gangs, but here is so much talent and if we can provide the platform for children to realise their potential, that is exactly what we will do,” he says.

Cox says music has always been his escape and he hopes to inspire others through his music and events. “Our aim is to create a buddy system like my friends and I have, to bring like-minded people together, to support and motivate one another.”

o you’ve just escaped with your life after being beaten up and raped and left for dead.

You’re at the Victim Support Room (VSP) of your local police station, a quivering mess trying to figure out what comes next.

You have a desperate urge to wipe your face, your hands and other important parts, to put on clean pants and smell and feel better – to feel human again. But you have only a crumpled piece of toilet paper the police officer gave you against the tide of emotions you’ve been dealing with since it happened ... Ever thought about this scenario before, dear reader? We at TygerBurger haven’t either. (Well, not recently, anyway.)

But now it’s Women’s Month. And we’re

trying to put that into perspective to highlight the needs of women in need. We believe the best way to help is to put our “handbag” where our mouth is, hence this month’s #We♥Tyger campaign: Bags of Hope.

You see, we believe the best way we can help a woman up is by giving her the tools she needs to pull herself up. Like our survivor friend in the VSP room.

She will need panties, possibly a bra, soap and a cloth, toothpaste and toothbrush, tissues or wipes or both, roll-on and deodorant, pads, some sweeties for the nerves, or just a kind word on a piece of paper, all neatly packaged in a handbag, ready for her to take with her into the future. It will be a weapon against the trauma she’s just had to deal

with. A weapon to say: I am Woman.

So, dear reader, please help us help that woman and all the others like her, who are not our mother or sister or daughter or friend, but who in any case need assistance to restore their dignity so they can feel womanly again. If you feel like us, please pack that old handbag of yours full of items of hope and drop it at our offices. Then nominate which organisation you would like your handbag to go to. A

man was shot in the head and chest in Firethorn Street, Bonteheuwel, at around 02:40 on Monday 7 August, police say.

Police spokesperson Constable Samantha Adonis says the 36-year-old man was found shot and taken to the hospital.

“The community arranged an ambulance to take the man to hospital. He died en route to the hospital.”

Adonis says the motive for the killing and the identity of the suspects are not known at this stage.

Ward councillor Angus McKenzie says the shooting of the man is believed to be gang related, although he was not part of a gang.

“Ek wil almal versoek om nie geld oor die toonbank by banke te trek nie. Plaas liewer geld op jou bankkaart en betaal jou rekeninge met die kaart. As jy wel geld moet trek, doen dit by ’n kitsbank in ’n besige winkelsentrum,” het Williams gesê.

“It is a major concern that innocent people are being targeted. I think this is because we are putting pressure on gangs. If the gangs are doing all this to prove a point, they should not do it because we are closing in on them.

“We are closing down on their operations and have increased visibility in the area.

The community is also starting to come forward with information about crime taking place.”

McKenzie says the partnership between him, the community and police results in higher police visibility and activity in the area, and they are managing the crime levels.

“It is a good thing to see that there are individuals standing up in the community,” he says.

‘Balloon’ saves preemie baby

P

rofessor Pierre Goussard, head of Paediatric Pulmonology and Paediatric Intensive Care at Tygerberg Hospital, recently performed South Africa’s first balloon dilatation procedure on a premature baby to save his life.

‘Baby Hermanus’ was born at Tygerberg Hospital on 24 March 2017 weighing approximately 2kg, and soon after his birth developed numerous medical conditions including severe narrowing of one of his airways due to lung disease, which led to air getting trapped in the tissue outside the tubes and air sacs of the lungs.

“In order to save Baby Hermanus, our medical team needed to perform a balloon dilatation – a technique that uses a catheter with an inflatable balloon to widen the lung.

The widening of the lung assists the patient to breathe better, which was crucial in order for Baby Hermanus to survive,” Goussard

says.

He explains that under anaesthesia, a guidewire was inserted into the airway and then a balloon over the guidewire. A contrast was injected to see the length of narrowing of the airway, with the balloon being inflated to twice the normal car tyre pressure.

Dr Beth Engelbrecht, head of Health, says technological advancements are critical markers of the academic proficiency of an academic environment. “The Tygerberg/ Stellenbosch University team is to be commended for the advancement of medical science with groundbreaking developments.

“It is due to the clinical expertise and skills available at Tygerberg Hospital that this delicate procedure could be performed successfully. In future, more dilation may be required, but Baby Hermanus’ lung has been saved,” says Engelbrecht.

“Dit was altyd my hartsbegeerte om in die bediening te gaan en te werk met jeug wat deur bendes, alkohol en dwelms geraak word. Om my hartsbegeerte te verwesenlik, het ek my alles op die rugbyveld gegee om bekend te word sodat die jeug na my sal luister. Ongelukkig was ek nou nie so beroemd soos Schalk Burger nie, maar ek kon danksy my Skepper en my geloof vandag na die jeug uitreik,” het Burch gesê.

Die rede waarom sy jeugbediening Born to be Reborn genoem word, is omdat baie van die jeug in konflik en ongeluk gebore is en nodig het om hergebore te word.

Sy droom is om ’n sentrum te bou waar al die negatiewe dinge in hul lewens uitgewis sal word sodat hulle hul eie potensiaal en godgegewe talent sal gebruik om iets positiefs met hul lewens te maak.

“Ek wil graag die jeug die kans gee om iets beters met hul lewens te maak as om by sosiale euwels betrokke te raak. Ek en my span het dieselfde visie en ons het vir mekaar gesê dat as ons nie probeer nie, ons nooit sal weet of ons wel in een persoon se lewe ’n verskil kan maak nie. Ons moet ophou kla oor die verkeerde dinge wat die jeug doen en iets daadwerkliks doen,” het hy gesê.

“My tweejarige tweeling is my inspirasie om ’n verandering in iemand anders se lewe te maak. Wat en waar sal hulle wees indien daar nie iets positiefs oor tien jaar in die vooruitsig vir hulle is nie?

“Ek kan baie maklik my goed oppak en die land verlaat, maar ek is ook deel van die land en wil my eie nalatenskap skep.

“Almal praat van voetspore wat gelaat word, maar ons vergeet die nalatenskap wat ons skep moet ’n goeie grondslag lê vir diegene wat dit volg.

“Ek wil een van diegene wees wat kop omhoog en trots my land kan verteenwoordig.

“Ek wil ander sportlui uitdaag om ook beter rolmodelle vir ons jeug te wees, want ek

City: There is method to the ‘tariff increase madness’ The City of Cape Town is clearing up public allegations that the City’s electricity tariffs are higher than that of a metro such as Johannesburg and that they are no longer supporting vulnerable residents.

In a statement, the City’s Mayco member for finance, Johan van der Merwe, confirms that these allegations are false and that the City’s energy tariffs remain consumption based. “We recover the cost of electricity to ensure that we provide a reliable supply to all, including those who are vulnerable. Whether you use more or less, it costs us the same to supply electricity,” says Van der Merwe. “Our tariffs are structured to ensure that the most vulnerable residents remain highly subsidised and assisted in the most sustainable manner for the City.”

Van der Merwe adds that tariff increases in the City have on average been lower than Eskom’s over the past 10 years and that the City is working hard at containing operating costs. “We do acknowledge that large increases in Eskom bulk electricity over the last number of years mean electricity is no longer cheap.

Many consumers have been buffered from this as they have been accessing the highly subsidised Lifeline Tariff from us.

The Lifeline Tariff is below cost and, due

to the high level of subsidisation from other customers, it can only be aimed at the most vulnerable households.”

The City has in the past used property value as a criterion in determining whether residents will have access to subsidised services. However, since many high-value property households are now set on consuming less, the current consumption-based tariffs are resulting in these more affluent households not contributing an equitable share to the subsidisation of vulnerable households.

“Accessing below-cost tariffs aimed at the most vulnerable is not sustainable or equitable. However, it is emphasised that limiting consumption will keep customers in a lower bracket of the Domestic Tariff,” he says. “In terms of comparisons of tariff charges between Cape Town and Johannesburg, the City says that no two metros are the same, as there is a different mix of industrial, commercial and residential customers. “As such, they will have different levels of cross-subsidisation across these categories.”

The City also starts with a disadvantage of about 3% due to its distance from Eskom’s Megawatt Park, he says.

Safety tips to keep women protected Women’s Month is the perfect opportunity to look at basic safety habits to protect women from crime. Today we commemorate the important part that women have played in the history of our nation, and they need to be protected.

“Being distracted makes you a soft target. Criminals are always on the lookout for soft targets and will take advantage if you are not paying attention. Being aware of your surroundings and potential threats is the first and most effective line of defence for anyone,” says Fidelity ADT’s district manager (Cape Town North), Verena Hulme.

She recommends cutting out distractions as far as possible and reasonable.

This includes not taking or making phone calls while driving, especially if you have your children in the vehicle.

“Put your phone away when out and about. Speaking on the phone while putting your kids or shopping into the car, for example, means you are concentrating on the call and not keeping an eye on your surroundings. It presents criminals with a great opportunity to hijack you or make off with your belongings.

“While driving, make sure your doors are locked and any valuable items are placed under the seat or in the boot, out of sight. If you are approaching your house, be on the lookout for any suspicious persons and rather drive around the block if you don’t feel safe. Also remember to stop and concentrate when approaching or leaving your house. Wait in the road for the gate to open before pulling into the driveway,” Hume says.

She adds that it’s also a good idea to change your driving routes and departure times every now and then.

“We are creatures of habit, which makes us predictable. Criminals scoping out your house will be able to know exactly when you leave and arrive and which

routes you take. Keep them guessing by leaving perhaps slightly earlier or later and taking different routes to drop the kids off at school, for example. The same applies to things such as your running routes and times, gym visits, and even your locking up and leaving routine,” she says.

She says that intuition is a powerful subconscious insight into situations and people, and she encourages women to trust their instincts; if a situation doesn’t feel safe, it probably isn’t.

Hulme says that if confronted by a criminal, escape is always the best option.

“If you are able to, run away, yell for help – do whatever you can to attract attention. If the criminal is after your purse or other items hand them over, or throw them in one direction and run in the other.”

“When possible tell someone where you are going and the time you expect to return. Save emergency numbers on your phone and try to memorise at least one contact number you can call in the event of an emergency. Remember, less is more when it comes to wearing flashy jewellery and carrying cash. If you are taking a handbag, carry it close to your body and not dangling by the straps.”

By exercising these precautions, Hulme believes women can develop good safety habits that will assist them in avoiding dangerous situations.

“I encourage women to not only use these tips, but to share them with family and friends. Most importantly, trust your instincts. If someone or something makes you feel uneasy, get away or get help,” she concludes.

“Life is challenging for everyone, women included. We hope that following these tips will help keep women safe while they tackle their daily demands,” says Hulme.

Suspects land in police hands A 14-year-old boy and another man were arrested for the illegal possession of firearms in Bishop Lavis this weekend.

The suspects were caught after they had scaled the wall of a property, which police were searching.

The operation took place on Saturday 6 August at about 20:50.

According to Bishop Lavis police spokesperson, Constable Samantha Adonis, police were searching a well-known drug outlet in Jakkalsvlei Avenue when the suspects were

caught.

“The minor and a 24-year-old man scaled a wall as police entered the property, not knowing that police were on the other side of the wall. The officers immediately stopped and searched them and found them each to be in possession of a firearm,” Adonis says.

The suspects are both members of the Bad Boys gang. Adonis says they have both been charged with illegal possession of a firearm.

BID sal Beaconvale nou veilig hou AVRIL FILLIES

resies ’n jaar nadat die aanvanklike versoek aan die Stad Kaapstad gerig is om Beaconvale in Parowvallei as die Beaconvale-verbeteringsdistrik (BID) te registreer, is dié status op Maandag 31 Julie toegeken.

Dit is Geocentric, ’n stedelike bestuur en navorsingsorganisasie, se negende verbeteringsdistrik.

Die BID volg in die voetspore van naburige gebiede soos Elsiesrivier en Parow, wat ook dieselfde status verkry het.

Beaconvale is hoofsaaklik ’n nywerheidsgebied en die tuiste van ’n mengsel van nywerheidsparke, kleinhandelaars en klein nywerhede langs Connaughtweg en Jan Smutsstraat.

“Die aanvanklike doel vir ’n BID was om die toenemende vlakke van stedelike verval aan te spreek,” het Sean Lavery, voorsitter van BID, gesê. “Bogenoemde twee strate is die afgelope paar jaar geteister deur misdaad wat sakelui genoop het om kragte saam te snoer om ’n langtermyn-oplossing te vind.

“Terwyl vandalisme, storting, diefstal, rommelstrooiery en ander ernstige misdade in die gebied toegeneem het, is niks gedoen om dit te verbeter of te verander nie. Ons het dit as normaal aanvaar,” het hy gesê.

Derhalwe is besluit dat Beaconvale by sy bure, Elsiesrivier, Parow en die Epping-nywerheidsgebied, sal gaan kers opsteek om ook in stedelike bestuur te belê en sy eie verbeteringsdistrik te begin.

“Verbeteringsdistrikte speel ’n belangrike rol in die welvaart van stedelike sentra.

Die Stad kan net soveel doen met die bronne tot hul beskikking. Indien verbeteringsdistrikte reg bestuur word en die gemeenskap self eienaarskap daarvan neem, kan hulle verseker dat die omgewing veilig en goed onderhou word,” het Lavery gesê.

Die dienste wat sedert Maandag 31 Julie deur BID ingesluit is, is die voorsiening van openbare veiligheidsbeamptes, skoonmaak van die gebied, onderhoud en verbetering van die stedelike openbare omgewing en/of infrastruktuur, en gemeenskapsdienste.

“Ons as die BID onderneem om sekere doelwitte te bereik – met die afname van misdaad as ons eerste prioriteit.

“Ons wil dit doen deur sigbare polisiëring van die BID, die samewerking van die polisie van die naburige woongebiede, die wetstoepassingseenheid van die Stad en die sekerheidsfirmas in die area. Ons wil ook ’n

Volgens Gene Lohrentz, Geocentric-eienaar en uitvoerende hoof, was daar ’n groot afname in misdaad in bogenoemde gebiede en ’n toename in belangstelling van sakelui, nadat ’n verbeteringsdistrik in elk van die woongebiede geskep is.

“Ons het Gert van der Merwe, ’n afgetrede inspekteur met meer as 22 jaar se ondervinding in die polisie, as die BID-bestuurder aangewys. Hy is goed vertroud met die woongebiede suid van Bellville en het gesê dat dit tot almal se voordeel is dat Beaconvale veiliger en skoner is, sonder vuilheid en misdaad,” het Lavery gesê.

“Die taal word veral in die noorde gepraat, maar op onderwysvlak is daar net sewe enkeltalige Afrikaanssprekende skole oor. Daar is ’n paar skole wat dubbelmedium is, maar anderkant die Hexrivierberge word Afrikaans op onderwysvlak sterk onderdruk,” het Eloff gesê.

Volgens hom is die Dagbreek-trust gestig om Afrikaans te bevorder. “Die muuronthulling moet jou liefde vir Afrikaans wys en ’n weergawe wees van die Afrikaans wat in jou woonbuurt gepraat word. Ons werk nie snags met ’n spuitkan om goed op mure te verf nie, maar bedags vir almal om dit te sien,” het hy gesê.

Afrikaans klink nie oral dieselfde nie en daar is verskillende dialekte van Afrikaans. “As jy onderrig in jou moedertaal ontvang, begin jy daarin dink, droom en praat. Navorsing het gewys dat as jy buite Suid-Afrika reis en jou moedertaal goed kan praat, jy baie maklik ’n ander taal kan

Hy het ook genoem dat die onderwysers ’n ontsaglike taak het met leerders se opvoeding.

“Baie keer as jy met suksesvolle mense praat, sal jy hoor dat iets wat hul onderwyser hulle eens op ’n tyd gesê het, hul motto in hul lewens geword het.

“Baie min onderwysers kry erkenning vir dit wat hulle doen. Ouers doen ook aan hul kinders ’n onreg om hulle in ’n ander taal as hul moedertaal te laat onderrig. Dis nou die tyd dat leerders verder in Afrikaans gaan studeer,” het hy gesê.

ugby is ’n sport wat “ontwikkel” en is geskik vir alle seuns. Grootte speel nie werklik ’n rol nie. Daar is vir elke seun ’n posisie waarin hy sal kan aanpas. In SuidAfrika is rugby in jou bloed!

Dít is hoe Pierre du Preez, ook bekend as Duppie, rugbyhoof van die Hoërskool Stellenberg in Bellville, sy passie vir die spel beskryf.

Hy is al 22 jaar en 6 maande betrokke by onderwys, waarvan 22 jaar by Stellies.

Hy was vir ses maande in ’n aflospos by sy alma mater, die Hoërskool Outeniqua op George, en is nou by Stellies gevestig.

UWK het die wind uit die seile gehaal van Belhar toe hy die tuisspan met 41-27 geklop het. Vir Durbell wou min reg verloop teen die Maties, wat maklik met 69-11 gewen het.

Unie-Milnerton het sy reeks goeie vertonings voortgesit deur die Victoriane met 3130 te klop, terwyl Tygerberg-klub met 33-22 te sterk was vir Primrose. Brackenfell het 10-43 vasgeval teen Valsbaai, die voorloper op die punteleer. In die B-afdeling van die Superliga het Kuilsrivier goed stem dik gemaak teen Bellville en met 34-18 gewen, maar Kraaifontein is met 28-25 deur Collegians geklop. In afdeling C het Elsiesrivier (3222 t Macassar) en Scottsdene (21-19 t Hamediehs) gewen. it gebeur nie aldag dat sokkerspanne met ’n tennistelling geklop word nie, maar in die Universiteit van WesKaapland se eerste sokkerwedstryd teen Wits het hulle met 6-0 gewen.

Dit was in die eerste wedstryd van die Varsity-sporttoernooi. Die afgelope naweek het CUT die UWK met 2-1 geklop en wil die span verbeter op dié vertoning.

“Dit is die vyfde jaar dat ons deelneem en slegs twee universiteite het sedert die ontstaan van die kompetisie deelgeneem – die UWK en Universiteit van Pretoria (Tuks),” het Salie Adams, afrigter van die UWK, gesê.

Die UWK het tans 24 spelers en van die spelers wat dopgehou moet word, is Clinton Herwel, Xolela Ndude, Achmat Ceres, Josh Silent, Thulani Mkhosi, Clint Fredericks,

Phiwokuhle Mphalala, Chad Smith en Ryan Steer.

Die spanne waarteen die UWK meeding, is Tuks, Noordwes-universiteit, CUT, Fort Hare, Universiteit van Johannesburg, Wits en Tshwane Universiteit van Tegnologie (TUT).

“Soos in enige kompetisie is daar maar altyd ’n span wat jou doodsteek is. In ons geval is dit Tuks wat deur die voormalige Bafana Bafana-middelskakel en internasionale sokkerspeler, Shaun Bartlett, afgerig word.

“Hulle het al twee keer die kompetisie gewen en TUT het verlede jaar koning gekraai,” het Adams gesê.

Die lesse wat hy as afrigter en sy span uit die verlede geleer het, is hoe mededingend universiteite is.

“Die kompetisie tussen universiteite verhoog die gehalte van die spel en die spelers

moet fiks en ook geestelik sterk wees.

“Dit is goed dat spelers blootstelling op televisie kry. Hulle kry nie net die kans om hul talent te wys nie, maar goeie vertonings op die veld verhoog ook die moraal van die spelers op die kampus,” het Adams gesê.

Die blootstelling van die spelers op televisie, is ook die platform waar beroepsklubs nuwe talent kan raaksien. Jy weet nooit watter Premierliga-sokkerspanne se talentsoekers die Varsity-kompetisie volg nie.

“Die kompetisie sluit op Donderdag 28 September, maar daar is nog baie water wat in die see moet loop voordat ’n wenner aangewys gaan word.

“In die eindstryd in 2015 het UWK met 2-1 teen TUT gewen. Wanneer ’n doelkans voorkom, moet jy jou kans gebruik en dit is wat teen Wits gebeur het toe ons hulle in ons eerste wedstryd geklop het,” het Adams gesê.

Volgens hom is dit ook belangrik dat spelers in koerante vir hul goeie spel uitgelig word.

“Wanneer ’n speler in die koerant verskyn, word daar oor hulle gepraat. Die spelers word dan huishoudelike name en word dan ‘familie’ van die mense,” het hy gesê.

Adams se loopbaan as afrigter dateer terug na 1995 toe hy Manning Rangers in die Nasionale Sokkerliga, die voorloper van die Premier-Sokkerliga (PSL), afgerig het.

“Van 2002 tot 2008 was ek hulpafrigter van Santos van Athlone in die PSL. Van 2009 tot 2011 was ek ook die hulpafrigter van Maritzburg United. Dit is nou my vierde jaar by UWK en ek is trots om te kan sê dat ons ook vir die Varsity-sokkerkompetisie vir volgende jaar gekwalifiseer het,” het Adams gesê.

Super League: Maximum points a must for both teams THOMAS CAROLUS Ravensmead AFC has finally started to turn things around this season, with nine wins and no defeats from their 12 games.

They will now come up against Trinitarians on Saturday 12 August in a Northern Suburbs FA Super League match at Uitsig sports grounds.

The results will have an impact on how the teams finish the season. It is impossible

to predict what will happen at the end of the season, because it is still too early.

Ravensmead seems to be hitting their peak, whereas Trinitarians are having a slight hiccup due to the number of matches they have played.

This is a very important game for both teams, with a win being a must for both.

The way Ravensmead is structured makes it easy for players to come in and perform. Ravensmead keeps it simple,

dominating possession and creating opportunities to score.

Darren Beerwinkel of Ravensmead really grafts when he is on the pitch. His confidence must be high after his performance against Invincible Cravenby. He has deceptive pace and is able to score goals from all areas of the pitch.

He keeps the ball moving with short- to medium-range passes, which keeps opponents off balance.

Beerwinkel is an attacking player and unlocks defences of teams by his creativity in the midfield.

Tinitarians would like to get back to their winning ways, as they are 14 points adrift from Ravensmead.

Ravensmead will depend on long balls to tire the opposition. When they are on attack they usually distribute the ball with short passes before converting to long balls again.
