MISSING CHILDREN: POLICE, PINK LADIES JOIN FORCES TO PROFILE CHILDREN IN THE EVENT OF THEM GOING MISSING

Preventative profiling ASTRID FEBRUARIE @astridfebruarie

A

fter the disappearance and murder of three-year-old Courtney Peters from Elsies River, the police in the community set out to ensure that the children in the area are all profiled and to use the opportunity to educate the community on the process to follow when reporting a missing person. Peters was first reported missing in early May and police embarked on a widespread search to find the toddler, which yielded no results. However, on Saturday 13 May a search party found the body of a female child near Bofors Circle in Epping and many feared the body was that of Courtney. TygerBurger later learned that Courtney’s family positively identified the body the next day. Elsies River police spokesperson, Daphne O’Reilly, says there is no waiting period when a child goes missing, and parents and family are urged to report it to the police immediately to ensure the necessary steps are taken to find the missing child. “It is very important for parents and/or guardians not to wait and to provide police with as much information as possible about the person they are reporting to be missing so that a profile can be created and a search can start immediately,” she says. The police established this campaign, Missing Persons Day, in partnership with the Pink Ladies Organisation, with the primary purpose of reuniting missing and endangered children and loved ones with their families and/or caregivers and also profiling as many children as possible in the community. O’Reilly says that over 300 children along with their parents attended the event on Saturday 19 August at Avonwood Square. “We were extremely pleased with the turnout, as it showed us that residents

are serious about the wellbeing of their children by ensuring they are well documented,” she says. Many times police find that when the family reports a loved one missing, they do not have a recent photo of the child or person, which makes it difficult to profile the missing person correctly. However, with this campaign, parents and guardians are encouraged to keep updated photographs of their children in the event of them going missing. “The aim of the project is to raise awareness on the process to follow when a child goes missing. Pink Ladies were there to assist parents in profiling their children and to get vital information to complete the form,” she says. O’Reilly says each child was measured and weighed and their fingerprints were taken by police officers and members of the Pink Ladies Organisation. A form indicting where fingerprints, weight and height were to be indicated was handed to each parent. On the form, parents were also asked to indicate any scars or birthmarks on their children, as this could help police in their search if a child is reported missing and needs to be identified. “This form was handed over to parents for their safe keeping. In the event of their child going missing they are to bring this profile to the police station so that the police can use that in filling in a missing person’s report” she says. O’Reilly urges parents and guardians to regularly update this form and to keep it in a safe place in their homes. “We are planning to host more of these events to ensure that we are able to have all children in the community profiled. Once we have finalised the dates and venues will we inform the community,” she adds. The man accused of the murder of Courtney Peters will appear in the Goodwood Magistrate’s Court on Thursday 24 August.
