RAISING FUNDS IN RIVERTON ESTATE: NEW RERA EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE HOLDS POTJIEKOS COMPETITION

T
he newly elected executive committee of the Riverton Estate Residents’ Association (Rera) is determined to unite the community and to improve the area. The executive committee recently hosted a potjiekos fundraising event to raise money to be invested in much-needed equipment for their neighbourhood watch. About 150 residents supported the potjiekos fundraiser, held about two weeks ago to help the association reach their financial goal. Theo Marais, chairperson of Rera, says they have already put up signage in the area stating that they have an active neighbourhood watch so as to ensure they can deter criminal activity, but also as a way to encourage people in the community to join the neighbourhood watch and become active members. “As the elected chairperson of the association, I will regularly meet with the executive committee to find ways to improve our community and to set short- and long-term goals, as we have the community’s best interests at heart with our plan,” Marais says. He says the potjiekos fundraiser was a huge success, with many residents having supported the event. “It actually exceeded my expectations. We will most definitely host one again and learn from the past experience,” he says. Marais says they will host a similar fundraiser again, as it was a family-oriented affair where children could play and enjoy themselves. “This is how you bring neighbours out to engage with one another and it is also a time to address issues pertaining to the area. Building relationships with the community is very important to Rera,” he says. Marais says the funds raised at the event will be used to purchase much-needed equipment for their neighbourhood watch to ensure they are able to carry out their duties. “We need to purchase good quality twoway radios, torches, boots and caps,” he says. They will also use the funds to purchase

Marais adds that they will host more functions and are also planning on producing a newsletter for the community in which they can provide all information on the association and various events they are hoping to host in future. “One of our main aims is to ensure that we continue to engage with the community, through our group chat, on issues in the area
and how we can go about finding solutions. We have engaged our ward councillor, Franchesca Walker, as well and believe that together we can make a difference in our community,” he adds. Walker says the potjiekos event was very well organised by Rera and the neighbourhood watch. “I had a meeting with both organisations when the planning was done. I enjoyed the

day very much. All the cooking that went on was very family oriented. The families worked very well together to get the best results,” she says. She says many residents who had not met her before had the opportunity to engage her on different issues. Walker adds that she used the opportunity to speak about various issues and how residents can do their bit to help the City of Cape Town.
