T

he playroom at St Joseph’s Home for Chronically Ill Children in Montana was officially opened on Monday 11 September as one of the final stages concluding the three-year renovation programme at the hospital.

TygerBurger previously reported (“Safe space for kids at ‘new’ St Jo’s”, 01/03) that the R46 million upgrade project for the home had been completed, giving the home a complete “facelift” and transforming the more traditional hospital into an eco-friendly space of light, warmth and healing.

Alrika Hefers, resource development manager of the home, says the renovations included the modernisation of five wards, a state-of-the-art rehabilitation hub, the upgrade of the nurses’ home and staff dining room, upgrade of the parents’ accommodation (from five to 20 visitors), various offices and interlinking open spaces.

Landscaping of the ward gardens and certain outside areas was also done.

“This project, ring-fenced for the hospital and the benefit to its patients, was made possible through a generous overseas donation,” Hefers said at the time.

The renovation of the home took two years of intense planning, working with a wide range of experts defining the scope of the project, refining the design of the upgrade and still keeping within budget.

Hefers says the five wards are now linked with open and functional spaces that can accommodate between 120 and 140 patients.

“St Joseph’s is a progressive, ‘one of a kind’ care facility in South Africa and provides a holistic care programme for children up to 18 years of age,” she says.

This includes 24-hour specialised and general nursing care and rehabilitation – physiotherapy, occupational and speech therapy, counselling, social work support, pastoral care and schooling.

Hefers says the playroom renovation,

which is part of the hospital and designed for patients to have some creative time outside their wards, came at a cost of R150 000.

“In the afternoons and weekends our patients can watch movies, interact with programmes on the computers, or read in the reading room.

“The idea is creative and therapeutic play,” Hefers says.

The home received several donations, with one being R100 000 from the Rotary Club, while R10 000 was donated by a former volunteer from Germany who stayed at the home for six months.

“The volunteer organised a street concert back home and they donated more than R25 000 to the home, and the Dieter and Bettina Wulkow Foundation donated R35 000 towards the computers,” she says.

The playroom, one of the smaller projects within the R46m renovation building project, has now been completed.

The Bishop Lavis Development Forum will host its annual meeting on Thursday 21 September at 19:00 in the school hall of Bishop Lavis High School.

The vision of the BDF, as it is also known, is for Bishop Lavis and surrounds to become a community engaged in sustainable transformation, possibility, prosperity and harmony.

Chairperson of the forum, Quentin Newman, says the organisation was formed in 2011 when a cross section of the community of Bishop Lavis and environs met at the University of the Western Cape to discuss the way forward with the development of the broader Bishop Lavis.

“It was decided that the BDF would

bring the different stakeholders together on a quarterly basis where organisations could report on their programmes and projects, which again would be shared with the broader community,” he says.

Newman says the forum would also act as the voice of these organisations, if so desired, as well as the conscience of the community, especially when the wishes and values of the community are undermined.

“We regard the unity during the spate of killings during the past two months as the culmination of the growing unity in the town, and want to urge the broader community to work towards common goals, despite our diverse roles,” he says.

All organisations, be it in the health, social services, education, youth, religious, small business, formal business, sports or culture fields, as well as interested individuals, are requested to attend this very important annual meeting so that a group of effective, well balanced, resourced and committed people can be elected to the executive.

Supermarket chain aware of crime near Cravenby store ASTRID FEBRUARIE @astridfebruarie

M

anagement of the Shoprite supermarket chain say they are aware of the crime in the vicinity of its Cravenby store and have reported several incidents to police.

This statement follows an incident in which a 73-year-old man from Connaught Estate was arrested and charged with murder after being involved in an alleged robbery.

TygerBurger reported (“Would-be victim turns deadly,” 06/09) that the incident occurred on Friday 1 September at around 11:40.

According to a bystander who made contact with Tygerburger and spoke on condition of anonymity, it is alleged that the suspect had just collected his pension and was of the belief that the deceased (46) was trying to rob him of his money.

However, police spokesperson Captain Odwa Makupula says they cannot confirm this information, but that they are aware of the deceased having tried to rob the suspect

of his bicycle, according to another witness.

Makupula says the incident happened next to Shoprite.

“This is the information we got from the suspect and witnesses. The suspect and the (deceased) man suspected of robbing him started fighting and the deceased pulled out a knife.

“During the scuffle the suspect managed to grab the knife and stab the victim once in his neck and six times in his chest,” Makupula says. The deceased was also from Connaught Estate.

The Shoprite media office states that the supermarket chain employs contract security personnel who are posted at strategic points to monitor store premises, and relies on the police for law enforcement in the area to keep citizens safe.

They further state: “It is unfortunate that an elderly man was recently attacked for his bicycle after he left the store. This matter has also been reported to the SAPS, and the supermarket chain will provide any assistance it can if so requested by the police.”

Mandrax in Montana A 33-year-old suspect was arrested for possession of drugs in Bishop Lavis.

This arrest follows as members of the police’s Project Stabilisation, participating in efforts to address the causes of crime, responded to information about alleged illegal drug activity and proceeded to Montana in Bishop Lavis.

Provincial police spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk says that at about 14:15 on Tuesday 29 August police entered and searched a residence in Downing Street where they seized a sports bag containing various plastic bags of mandrax. A total of 1375 whole mandrax tablets and several broken tablets were seized, with an estimated street value of R70 000.

“The abuse of illegal substances is one of the root causes of violent crime, and the members of Project Stabilisation are lauded for their efforts to take drugs off our streets,” Van Wyk says.

“Ek het in 1977 ’n akteur geword nadat ek vier jaar in Londen gestudeer het. In Julie 1977 het ek huis toe gekom en by die destydse Kaapse Raad vir Uitvoerende Kunste (Kruik) as die spook in Hamlet opgetree.

“My tweede werk was in Johannesburg toe ek Owl in Winnie the Pooh gespeel het.

“Daarna het ek drie jaar vir die Transvaalse Raad van Uitvoerende Kunste (Truk) in die Engelse geselskap (ons was net drie) gewerk. Die jaar 1980 was ook die laaste jaar wat ek ’n salaris verdien het. Van toe af tot nou werk ek as vryskut – queller horreur! Beslis nie vir sissies nie,” lag hy.

o encourage a culture of health, wellness and an active lifestyle through regular physical activity and health education in the province’s previously disadvantaged communities – this is the main aim of the Community Health Intervention Programmes (Chips).

Chips was established by the Sports Science Institute of South Africa (SSISA) in 1997 to address the growing prevalence of obesity and non-communicable diseases, including hypertension and diabetes.

Lynette Speelman, a member of Chips, says they strive to achieve their goal through their various intervention programmes.

“In August this year we reached the 20year mark of sustainable programme delivery in communities across the Cape Flats. To celebrate this 20-year milestone with the participating communities, we have decided to roll out a series of 5km fun runs to show off this successful partnership,” Speelman says.

“We are expecting our members, residents of Matroosfontein, members of our sister branches and various other sports clubs to join us. The registration process will commence at 07:00,” she says.

Speelman is also urging the community to join them either on a Monday evening at the Matroosfontein Civic Centre or on a Thursday evening at the Elsbury Park sports field (clubhouse) from 17:30 to 18:30 where participants can enjoy a fitness class (aerobics, step and circuit training).

This is Denver Swanepoel, helpdesk clerk at Karl Bremer Hospital’s (KBH) Emergency Centre, who recently brought joy to his facility and the Northern Tygerberg Substructure by winning a bronze award in the 2017 Western Cape Government Staff Service Excellence Awards.

The New Apostolic Church in Elsies River opened its doors to host Legal Aid South Africa, which provided free legal advice to the community last week.

Community activist and resident Valentino Stander says local bishop, Elvin Witten, and evangelists Reubin Bester and Brian Samaai – constituting the leadership of the church in the area – gave the go-ahead after seeing the need for this initiative in the community.

“One bullet hit her in the head, damaging her skull and leaving her completely incapacitated,” he says.

Stander says all Lucritia can remember is her favourite music and her relatives (nothing else). Her mother, Lizelle Floors, attended the event to seek legal advice and also engaged with public figures regarding her struggle to care for her daughter and the trauma they are going through.

“Dugmore reached out to help the family and also encouraged others to help them,” Stander says. He adds that she is in need of adult nappies (Molly Care) and other essentials.

Frightening truth about drinking in pregnancy

S

aturday 9 September marked International Foetal Alcohol Syndrome Awareness Day to raise awareness of the fact that pregnant women should abstain from drinking alcohol. Willem Stassen, critical care paramedic at ER24, explains foetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) as the leading preventable cause of mental retardation.

“It is a clinical syndrome that occurs when the unborn baby is exposed to alcohol through maternal alcohol consumption. This syndrome is characterised by distinct facial abnormalities and other defects in the heart, muscles, kidneys and eyes. One study reports that the incidence of FAS in some South African populations may be as high as 12.2%.

“Unfortunately, the damage done in FAS is permanent and cannot be undone,” he says.

The South African National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (SANCA) says that FAS is 100% preventable.

The mother and baby are connected by the placenta and the umbilical cord. This means that the baby takes in almost everything that the mother consumes. Substances can build up in the baby’s system and can cause permanent damage.

Stassen says that there is no safe level or period of alcohol intake during pregnancy, as this is affected by the alcohol clearance rates, foetal sensitivity to alcohol, drinking patterns of the mother-to-be, as well as genetics.

“For this reason, all international guidelines recommend that pregnant women completely abstain from all alcoholic beverages during the entire duration of pregnancy.

Pregnant women should always attend prenatal checkups at a registered healthcare provider,” he says.

SANCA states that there are at least 500 000 South Africans suffering from FAS. South Africa, with an incidence of 8-12%, has the highest rate of FAS globally.

CAT learners: Put a spring in your step All Grade 12 Computer Application Technology (CAT) learners are invited to enrol for the Spring School programme hosted by the I-CAN Centre in Elsies River, which will run from Monday 2 October to Thursday 5 October.

This programme will help learners to improve their ability to score higher marks when writing their final exams in October and November.

In addition, learners will receive Microsoft International Certification upon completion of the programme.

Scholtz says the project was also geared towards Grade 11 and 12 CAT learners.

“The certification will assist learners in terms of university en-

trance, motivation to apply for a bursary, employment opportunities and redirecting a career in IT,” he says.

The Spring School programme will impact more than 150 high school learners on the Cape Flats with international certification.

“To help youth in South Africa to reach their full potential, we aim to raise funds for the I-CAN Digital Spring School. We invite companies to fund these students, because they are our future employees,” Scholtz urges. He believes that exposure to technology can enhance learners’ results and future ventures.

Giving dignity to Elsies’ girls

Approximately 10 000 sanitary towels were handed over to Holy Trinity Primary School and Marian Secondary School in Elsies River on Tuesday 5 September as part of the Dignity Period Project.

This project was run by the Girl Guides of Cape West and officially came to an end on 5 September.

Girl Guide representatives Jean Dunn (regional commissioner), Geraldine February (deputy regional commissioner), Tanya Prinsloo (district commissioner of De Grendel District), Evangeline du Toit (adult leader) and Zoe Prinsloo (15-year old Ranger from Bothasig) were met by enthusiastic and well-behaved young ladies at both schools.

All the learners were extremely appreciative of and thankful for the donation.

Kraaifontein is op verrassende wyse met 34-35 deur Daljosafat se Young Peoples getroef, terwyl Kraaifontein se buurklub, Hands & Heart, moedig gespook het teen die gunsteling, Rangers, maar hy moes met 31-45 die stryd gewonne gee. In afdeling C is Scottsdene darem nog in die wedloop nadat hy All Saints met 51-12 laat les opsê het.

Daniel Roberts van Tygerberg duik oor vir ’n puik drie in sy span se wedstryd die afgelope Sondag op Floridapark in die nasionale Goue Beker-rugbykompetisie teen Progress van Uitenhage. Tygerberg het die kompetisie goed begin met ’n oorwinning van 54-27.
