M

anaging an animal welfare organisation has many challenges and it often comes down to being limited by funds and the ability to help every single animal they come across.

This according to the general manager of the Animal Anti-Cruelty League Cape Town (AACL-CT), Dr Mpho Hlalele, who says that with only a handful of qualified staff they are always under pressure to meet the public’s

demand for help with injured stray animals, collecting pets for treatment and serving hundreds of clients through their daily clinics.

“Our staff work seven days a week to meet all these demands and they are often emotionally and physically drained from the work they do. It also becomes difficult to find the funds to meet all our expenses that are incurred by our work to help the disadvantaged communities around us,” Hlalele says.

She says the animal cruelty they encounter as an organisation is often times horrific

However, the most rewarding part of the job is having a hospital that supports hundreds of animals, healing them and caring for them before returning them to their owners in a healthy condition.

people that make the job worthwhile. It is so rewarding to get to know the animals in our surrounding communities and to see clients becoming responsible pet owners through our education and support,” Hlalele says.

Their rescue and rehabilitation stories also make it all worthwhile. “To watch a scared and neglected animal enter our facility and then be adopted out to a loving family and leave our facility bouncy, happy and healthy is always extremely rewarding,” Hlalele says.

City says ‘pay your debt, help with drought’

ayment on more than 110 350 overdue municipal accounts – translating to about R594 million – would go a long way towards helping the City with the current drought crisis.

In a statement released last week, the City said it had already sent 105 179 SMS notices for the 110 350 overdue accounts amounting to R594 million as at 18 October.

Total payments received though the SMS initiative have brought in an amount of R194 million, according to the statement.

The City called on all debtors, other than those receiving indigent assistance, to pay up or to face debt management actions.

These actions have been intensified, especially against those who can pay but choose not to, and also against frequent defaulters,

according to the statement.

The City maintains that for the period ended 30 September, their collection rate was 95.24% due to an effort to drive sustainability and the culture of payment, working hard to maintain a 12-month moving average payment ratio for rates and services over the last year.

According to the statement, the City’s collection rate has also been an area of focus that has yielded results, and the City’s current billings are over R2.6 billion per month. “Debt management actions are being intensified, especially against those who are able to pay but choose not to do so, and also against the frequent defaulters.

Hoping that the debt will go away or ignoring the problem is not the answer, especial-

ly as there is help on offer,” said the City’s Mayco member for finance, Johan van der Merwe. The City introduced the new SMS and email campaign to remind account holders to pay their monthly invoices by the pending due date if they have not yet done so. It also encourages those in arrears to pay up if they can or to approach the City to discuss payment options and settle their arrear debt over an agreed period of time.

The City’s Credit Control and Debt Collection Policy makes allowance for seniors or indigent residents to approach the City and access the range of benefits based on their total household income.

Residents are encouraged to visit their nearest municipal office for advice and guidance in respect of accounts in arrears.

their animal is always wearing some identification, either an ID tag with telephone number or even better a microchip, so that if they get lost they can be found,” Hlalele urges.

Clean­up project for The Range A

clean-up project for The Range in Elsies River that kicked off last week saw the City of Cape Town tackling the most visible decay and deterioration in the area.

The City’s Mayco member for Area Central, Siyabulela Mamkeli, initiated the project, which kicked off on Monday 16 October and concluded on Friday 20 October.

Mamkeli says the project included a number of City departments like Solid Waste Management, the Transport and Urban Development Authority, and Law Enforcement.

“The teams assigned to the clean-up pitched in to fix potholes, clean graffiti,

prune trees and mow grass, replace missing refuse bins, and address bylaw transgressions in the area, including those emanating from an illegal scrapyard,” he says.

Mamkeli says the project was the first of its kind in Area Central on his watch and he will look to replicate it elsewhere going forward.

“Apart from sprucing up the area, there is also an element of the “broken windows” theory. Physical degradation creates an environment conducive to criminal activity.

With this clean-up, we are not only creating a safer community, but we are also improving services to our most vulnerable residents,” he says.

Mamkeli says the project aims to establish a multidisciplinary service team to deliver an integrated basket of basic municipal services, as well as to create safe conditions conducive to rendering the services during the targeted period.

The joint area cleaning operation focused on parks and public open spaces, general courtyards, roads and communal spaces, areas surrounding the refuse huts, areas surrounding the electricity substation, and storm water facilities.

It included the repair of potholes within the courtyards and side streets, the replacement of missing refuse bins and the provision of additional bins.

The clean-up also focused on the provision of visible safety before and during the targeted intervention regarding the illegal scrapyard.

Patterson says that for 82 years they have been pioneering, creating and readjusting a holistic service to provide these children with a temporary home that will aid their healing and rehabilitation process.

“Extensive renovations to the home, which started in 2014, have also been completed and five wards are now in operation. This creates child-friendly spaces and small gardens where patients can enjoy being close to nature,” she says.

‘Minimum sentences simply don’t work’ HARRIET BOX

T

here is no evidence that mandatory minimum sentences work, and growing evidence that they are not effec-

tive.

So said Justice Edwin Cameron of the South African Constitutional Court when he delivered the third annual Dean’s Distinguished Lecture at the UWC’s Faculty of Law on Thursday 19 October 2017.

Cameron went on to say that despite this evidence, South Africa stubbornly persists with mandatory minimum sentences – largely because the State wants to persuade a “terrified” public that it is tough on crime.

According to the dean of law at UWC, Professor Bernard Martin, these annual lectures provide a platform for South Africa’s leading legal minds to explore some of the most pressing issues of our time.

Cameron’s lecture, “Imprisoning the Nation: Minimum Sentences in South Africa”, made a strong case for the scrapping of such minimum sentences for most low-level nonviolent crimes – a view not always popular with the South African population, he warned, though he stressed that long sentences for violent crimes are most necessary.

Minimum sentences have not only proven ineffective, but have also had pernicious effects on the correctional system, on offenders, and on society in general, he said.

“Minimum sentences offer us a false promise,” Cameron said.

“They offer us a belief that we are actually doing something about crime.”

The toll has been disastrous, Cameron noted.

For one, overcrowding in South African prisons has led to a range of human rights violations, perpetrated in the name of its citizens.

It also disproportionately affects black and coloured offenders.

And, he argued, mandatory minimum sentences fail to meet all four rationales used in the justification thereof: deterrence

(offenders are deterred by the certainty of punishment rather than the severity of the sentence), incapacitation (locking up less dangerous criminals for long periods does not reduce crime), rehabilitation (this is simply not done, in Cameron’s experience of visiting South African prisons) and retribution (despite its strong emotional and historic appeal, vengeance has many shortcomings).

Harsh minimum sentencing, Cameron explained, was introduced into South African law in 1997 by the Criminal Law Amendment Act, a “tragic mistake” that has “plagued” the country for the past 20 years.

The law was put on the books largely to placate a terrified public as violent crime rose sharply over the country’s transition to democracy, according to him.

“Struggling to cement its legitimacy amid an outcry over crime, the State and politicians felt not only compelled to act, but more importantly to be seen to act,” said Cameron.

There are ways to reduce incarcerations in South Africa, but there are “no shortcuts” and “no magic bullets”, said Cameron.

Firstly, mandatory minimum sentences for low-level non-violent crime – mostly drug-related – should immediately be scrapped, he urged.

He proposed the establishment of a sentencing council, which had previously been mooted in an effort to come up with a more efficient system.

The mentally ill should be treated rather than imprisoned; finally, pretrial detention practices should be overhauled – and locking up those who cannot afford bail is simply unfair.

We are all terrified of crime, noted Cameron in closing – and often justifiably so.

But it must be recognised that minimum sentencing – “pernicious, misguided and futile” – has not reduced the levels of crime in our society.

“Instead, let us hold our leaders accountable,” he urged.

Two murders in one day Elsies River police are investigating the murders of two men that occurred on Sunday 22 October.

According to Elsies River police spokesperson, Captain Daphne O’Reilly, the murders occurred at different times in the same area.

In the first incident a 33-year-old man, Ashley Paulus, sustained several stab wounds to his upper body.

“Police were called to the Elsies River Day Hospital at about 16:30 where staff pointed out the victim. The officers were informed that the victim had been declared dead on his arrival at the hospital,” she says.

O’Reilly says it is alleged that the victim was stabbed in Monkwood Avenue in Epping Forest.

The motive and circumstances surrounding the incident are still under in-

vestigation.

A case of murder has been opened for investigation During the second murder, which occurred later on the same day at about 20:10, police were alerted to a shooting incident in Monkwood Avenue in Epping Forest.

“Upon their arrival police officers found 21-year-old Keaten Claassen of Epping Forest lying in the street with a gunshot wound to the left side of his head,” O’Reilly says.

The victim was declared dead on the scene by paramedics.

O’Reilly says no information was given as to what had led to the incident.

A case of murder has been opened for investigation.

earners of Leonsdale and Elswood primary schools enjoyed a fun-filled afternoon as they were entertained by the K9 Police Dog Unit, which demonstrated to them how police dogs sniff out drugs and catch suspects.

The learners were also given advice on how to protect themselves and even participated in some of the activities as Sensei Romeo Jury (third dan black belt) showed them

how to defend themselves.

The highlight of the day was when Kung Fu master, Muhammad Junaid Chafeker (better known as MJ Li), visited the school and showed the children just what he is made of.

MJ Li showed off his high kicks and demonstrated how he is able to do push-ups while in a split.

He then gave several of the learners the opportunity to try and do the same.

The learners and staff were awestruck as MJ Li showed off his winning moves.

ie Vriende van die Mag-organisasie (VVM) in Eersterivier is in 2012 gestig om oud-weermaglede te help om selfonderhoudend te word en om hulle ook by te staan in tye van nood.

“Dit is ’n nie-winsgewende organisasie en baie van die weermaglede wat lid was van die destydse Suid-Afrikaanse Weermag (SAW) of Suid-Afrikaanse Nasionale Weermag (SANW), het nie goed voorsiening vir hul oudag gemaak nie.

“Ons missie is om gehaltedienste te lewer aan diegene wat daarvoor kwalifiseer of hul begunstigdes, indien die weermaglid oorlede is, sodat hulle gemaklik kan lewe,” het Abe Bengell, tesourier van die organisasie, gesê.

Teen entrepreneurs battle it out A

fter running another successful 12month programme of teaching entrepreneurship skills to high school learners across Cape Town through its entrepreneur societies, the culmination of the SA Teen Entrepreneur programme saw young would-be entrepreneurs battling it out by presenting their business ideas at the grand finale that took place about two weeks ago.

Under the theme of “pitching in the ring”, groups of learners from several schools presented a wide variety of business ideas to a panel of judges.

The winners of the competition were from Cravenby Comprehensive School in Cravenby, Elsies River.

They received R1200 in vouchers from Shoprite, which will be used to further invest in their food garden business.

Business ideas ranged from the conceptualisation and production of shower mechanisms to take water-saving into account, to the development of an app to teach learners how to prepare for their exams, to the formation of outlets selling a variety of commodities ranging from food to farm produce, to name a few.

The learners of Cravenby High School not only presented a business idea, but they had already gone ahead and started their business, which is already in operation.

With support and financial help from the teachers at the school, they started a food garden.

The garden is now yielding produce, which they are selling to generate income to plough into the maintenance and upkeep of the garden.

The winning teams, which are really serious about pursuing their ideas and bringing them to life in the form of a viable business, will undergo mentorship training where they will be given guidance and tutoring around the setting up and running

of a successful business.

Lydia Zingoni, SA Teen Entrepreneur’s founder and director, says the programme, which is hailed by many as being hugely successful in teaching entrepreneurial skills to high school learners and assisting in unlocking an entrepreneurial mindset, is in its second successful year.

“We are looking forward to 2018 with much excitement and anticipation,” she says.

They already have in excess of 40 schools signed up and ready to kick off the programme when schools reopen in January next year, and a great many more across the country awaiting funding to get started.

Zingoni says the SA Teen Entrepreneur model has piqued the interest of academics from the University of Cape Town’s Economics Department, as well as that of the Paris School of Economics.

“Findings of research conducted into how the model works, and its successes achieved, will be applied to the development of youth entrepreneur models to impact the economic environment in both South Africa and abroad,” she says.

Zingoni says with so many educational institutions locally expressing interest in signing up, and thereby exposing their young learners to an entrepreneurial way of thinking, the SA Teen Entrepreneur Foundation is also being confronted with huge interest from local researchers into mindsets that can ignite an entrepreneurship revolution, which extends right into Africa.

“Naturally SA Teen Entrepreneur is excited by the interest in the programme, and hopes to translate this interest into financial and other support, which will enable it to place more entrepreneur societies into schools throughout South Africa.”

Groot opkoms vir pretloop AVRIL FILLIES

ltesaam 170 deelnemers van Elsiesrivier het op Saterdag 14 Oktober aan die 5 km-pretloop vanaf die plaaslike gemeenskapsaal deur die strate deelgeneem.

Volgens Beulah Hill, organiseerder van die pretloop, is die lede af in Haltweg na Balvenielaan, links in 35ste straat op tot by Fransie van Zyl-rylaan en links af in Haltweg, en toe terug na die beginpunt by die gemeenskapsaal.

“Die doel was om Chips se 20ste bestaansjaar te vier en om ook inwoners in Elsiesrivier bewus te maak van hoe belangrik dit is om gesond te leef. Die fiksheidsklasse word onder die vaandel van die departement sportwetenskap van die Universiteit Stellenbosch aangebied,” het Hill gesê.

Die veiligheid van die deelnemers is verseker deur die teenwoordigheid van die Stad

Kaapstad se verkeerspolisie, reserviste, en polisiebeamptes van die Elsiesrivier-polisiekantoor, wat die stasiebevelvoerder en senior beamptes ingesluit het.

“Vroegdag was daar al ’n ‘gees’ onder die deelnemers. Hulle kon gratis bloeddruktoetse en glukose-lesings kry en hul suikervlakke laat toets. Verskeie klubs het aan die pretloop deelgeneem en elke klub se lede het hulle getooi in prettige uitrustings,” het Hill gesê. Die hoogtepunt was die kitspryse wat uitgedeel is.

Volgens Hill is die bestuur van die OptiFit-klas en gemeenskapsleiers dankbaar oor die groot opkoms. “Ons nooi ander inwoners uit om by die klub aan te sluit. Ons oefentye is Maandae en Woensdae van 17:30 tot 18:30 en dit kos R30 per maand. Ons toets lede se bloeddruk, gewig en ander gesondheidskwessies gratis by die klub,” het Hill gesê.

Vissers gevra: ‘Wat heet jóú wurm?’

ie Universiteit Stellenbosch (US) en vennote is besig met ’n studie oor die wurms wat deur plaaslike visvanggeesdriftiges gebruik word ten einde ’n taksonomiese sleutel en veldgids saam te stel.

Bloedwurms, wonderwurms, gruiswurms, maanskynwurms of poedingwurms – watter een van hierdie klomp gebruik vissermanne die meeste vir visaas en hoe kry hulle dit in die hande?

Dít is een van die vrae op ’n kortlys wat aan vissers versprei word deur die US en sy vennote, wat navorsers van Sanparke se Tuinroete Nasionale Park en die Knysnakom-projek insluit.

Dr. Carol Simon, ’n marienebioloog aan die US, sê die doel van hierdie vraelys is om ’n beter idee te kry van hoe groot die aanvraag na borselwurms is wat as aas gebruik word langs die Suid-Afrikaanse kuslyn.

Terselfdertyd hoop hulle ook om konsensus te bereik oor die algemene name wat in Suid-Afrika gebruik word om hierdie aasspesies te benoem.

“Ons navorsing toon dat algemene name waarmee na aasspesies verwys word, dikwels nie konsekwent gebruik word in veldgidse en inligtingsbrosjures en -pamflette nie en soms selfs nie eens in die wetenskaplike vaklektuur nie,” verduidelik sy.

Sy noem dat een so ’n algemene naam byvoorbeeld verwys na ’n groep soortgelyke wurms, óf na verskillende spesies; óf ’n wurm kan meer as een algemene naam hê.

Simon meen dié benaming kortwiek die doeltreffende bestuur van ’n belangrike hulpbron.

Voorafgaande data dui daarop dat sommige spesies wat in Suid-Afrika gebruik word, ook wêreldwyd wyd verspreid voorkom.

City’s gang & drug unit arrests 453

T

he City of Cape Town’s Gang and Drug Task Team (GDTT) has made 453 arrests in a cluster of crime hotspots over the quarter July to September.

The successes came from more than 300 autonomous and joint operations with the police and other City enforcement agencies, as well as general patrols in several communities including Bishop Lavis, Delft, Elsies River, Kraaifontein, Manenberg and Ravensmead, among others.

One-third of the arrests were of motorists caught driving under the influence of alcohol.

Officers also recorded nearly 3000 traffic offences and 747 bylaw offences.

They confiscated 1567 units of drugs, seven firearms, and 252 rounds of ammunition.

In the last three weeks, officers have upped the ante by recovering 12 firearms.

These arrests and confiscations exclude the successes attributed to police.

The City’s Mayoral Committee member for safety and security and social services, JP Smith, says however that given that police handle the dissemination of their crime statistics differently, it’s not possible to give an accurate global view.

“What the statistics do show is that officers are in fact on the ground and making a difference, in spite of perceptions to the contrary,” he says.

Smith says there is a need for more resources for all enforcement agencies, but also greater parity between the arrest statistics and con-

viction statistics.

“Many of the successes we are able to report on come via the public and it’s disheartening for them to see perpetrators out on the street the very next day or week.

“So if we are going to bolster community confidence and make a meaningful impact in the fight against crime, then there needs to be greater emphasis on effective prosecutions,” he says.

Smith explains that the GDTT focuses much of its efforts on the worst crime-affected areas in the City, with resources redeployed in line with risk assessments of the various flashpoints.

“The decision on where to deploy and when is largely based on intelligence received from the police, as well as our own observations and intelligence derived from the ShotSpotter gunshot detection system,” he says. However, Smith says it is not always ideal, because apart from the areas where ShotSpotter is deployed, they do not have accurate information about the threat levels.”

This is why the City proposed the implementation of neighbourhood safety teams that will provide a dedicated enforcement presence in troublesome areas, Smith adds.

This whole-of-society approach to fighting crime is in line with the City’s Organisational Development and Transformation Plan.

“The first 120 neighbourhood safety team officers are set for deployment by the end of November in Delft and we are excited to see what impact this approach will have on crime and policing.”

The team also confiscated firearms during its operations.

Approximately 453 people were arrested in a cluster of crime hotspots by the City of Cape Town’s Gang and Drug Task Team (GDTT).

Faunal survey in Cape Flats Nature Reserve T

he sixth annual faunal survey was conducted from 19 to 21 October at the Cape Flats Nature Reserve on the grounds of the University of the Western Cape.

The Thursday until the Saturday saw Biodiversity and Conservation Biology (BCB) staff and students, as well as hobbyists, volunteers and school learners, all joining together in the fun while collecting valuable scientific information.

More than 60 participants spent day and night “bundu-bashing” through the reserve in search of anything that moved.

On the Thursday various traps were set out. On the Friday morning the tortoise survey took place under the guidance of Dr Martin Hendricks.

Only a section of the reserve can be covered and this year a very overgrown part that is in dire need of a fire was surveyed.

Twelve angulate (Chersina angulata) tortoises were found – seven males, four females and one sub-adult (sex cannot be determined yet).

The survey also covered a count of reptiles (25 chameleons were spotted along with eggeaters and cross-marked whip snakes, as well as various species of geckos and lizards); mammals (five rodent species including mice, gerbils, rats and shrews); birds (35 species recorded, with one addition); amphibians (eight sand frogs were recorded in

Saterdag het hy ook gewys dat hy as afrigter op dieselfde pad is, toe hy met sy o.18span, Houtbaai United Community Club, Safa se Cape Town Coca Cola-o.18-beker teen Avendale in die Athlone-stadion met 1-0 gewen het.

“Deur die jare in my sokkerloopbaan was ek altyd betrokke in die gemeenskap, maar het dit nie aan die groot klok gehang nie.

“Twee jaar gelede het ek my beroepsokkerskoene finaal opgehang en by Houtbaai se senior span betrokke geraak,” het hy gesê.

Bradley August, voorheen van die klub Vasco da Gama, het hom gevra om te kom uithelp in Houtbaai.

“Ek was betrokke by die senior span, en hy het my gevra om die o.18-span af te rig.

“Sedert Januarie het ek met die span in die Coca Cola-o.18-uitklopbekerkompetisie gespeel en het dit Saterdag gewen.

ie sestien Premierligasokkerspanne kry almal hierdie naweek ’n blaaskans van PSL-wedstryde, maar is almal gewikkel in die Telkombeker-uitklopstryd.

Ajax Cape Town en Cape Town City reis onderskeidelik na Polokwane op Saterdag 28 Oktober en Baroka op Sondag 29 Oktober. Albei wedstryde word in die Peter Mokaba-stadion in Polokwane gespeel.

Cape Town City het verlede jaar die Telkombeker verower en is een van drie van die grootste spanne wat vir die kompetise gekeur is.

Die ander twee is Bidvest Wits en Mamelodi Sundowns.

City het in sy opmars na die eindstryd afgereken met Bloemfontein Celtic, Baroka, Free State Stars en Supersport United.

Hulle pak juis nou vir Baroka in die eerste kragmeting.

City sal sy titel wil verdedig nadat hy op 14 Oktober in die MTN8-eindstryd met strafdoele teen Eric Tinkler se Supersport United verloor het.

Ajax is verlede jaar in die uitspeelwedstryd (eerste agt) deur

Supersport United met 1-0 uitgeskakel. Daarna het Supersport met Mamelodi Sundowns in die kwarteindstryd en in die halfeindstryd met Orlando Pirates met dieselfde telling afgereken.

Ajax se oorwinning Saterdag oor Bloemfontein Celtic in die Athlone-stadion was net die inspuiting wat die span nodig gehad het om vertroue op te bou.

Ajax het gewys dat hy kan wen en ook aanslae in die laaste kwartier van ’n wedstryd kan afweer, soos wat hulle teen Bloemfontein Celtic gewys het.

Tydens die voorbereiding vir die Polokwane-wedstryd vandeesweek was daar ’n nuwe gees onder die spelers op die oefenveld. Almal besef nou hulle kan nie laat slaplê en toelaat dat Polokwane in die laaste kwartier met ’n aanslag begin om die uitslag vas te knoop nie. ’n Interessante stryd word verwag, want Ajax sal nie net met Polokwane en sy ondersteuners rekening moet hou nie, maar ook met die hitte.

Op die PSL-punteleer lê Polokwane negende met nege punte, terwyl Ajax tiende lê met agt punte. Ajax het egter een wedstryd minder as Polokwane ge-

speel en indien die Urban Warriors Saterdag se wedstryd wen, sal die span genoeg vertroue hê vir sy volgende PSL-wedstryd teen Platinum Stars op Woensdag 1 November in die Royal Bafokeng-stadion in Rustenburg.

In Saterdag se wedstryd teen Bloemfontein Celtic het Ajax talle doelkanse verbrou. Teen Polokwane sal die Urban Warriors dié kanse moet benut, want hulle kry net een kans om dié Telkombekerstryd te wen, anders is dit neusie verby vir die res van die kompetisie. Ajax het laas die Telkombeker in 2008 met 2-1 teen Orlando Pirates in Durban gewen en die volgende jaar teen Kaizer Chiefs vasgeval. Tashreeq Morris het gewys dat hy kan afrond en dit was ook duidelik teen Bloemfontein Celtic dat die afrigter, Stanley Menzo, se wedstrydplanne nou stadig begin vrugte afwerp.

Die moontlikheid bestaan dat Toriq Losper dalk weer opgeroep kan word na die senior span vir die Telkombekerstryd.

Hy het die afgelope ruk vir Ajax in die Multichoice Diskikompetisie gespeel.

Tashreeq Morris van Ajax Cape Town en Aphiwe Lubisi van Bloemfontein Celtic is hier in ’n stryd om die bal gewikkel in die PSL­kragmeting Saterdag in die Athlone­stadion.

Morris was een van die tuisspan se doelskieters in hul oorwinning van 2­1 oor Bloem­ fontein Celtic. Die ander doel is deur Bantu Mzwakali vir Ajax geskiet, terwyl Isaac Nhlapo vir Celtic gedoel het.

For Murray, winning is just so much fun!

He labelled 2017 as a year of fun, and even though Richard Murray did have a lot of fun, it also turned out to be one of his best seasons ever.

The 2017 season had a greater variety of events on Murray’s calendar, and the focus wasn’t just on the World Triathlon Series as in previous years. “It was a very interesting year. Things did get a bit more serious than planned when I started to have some of my best results while ‘having fun’, but I had a lot of fun for sure,” says Murray.

He made his 70.3 debut this year. “To be honest my first 70.3 event did not meet the

expectations I had beforehand. I was keen to do a bit better and maybe podium or even win, but who would have guessed so many top professional athletes would have turned up! Finishing fifth was good, but my run time was not what I was planning. I will do better next time.”

Another brand new experience was the introduction of the Super League Triathlon.

Winning the first edition early in the season on Hamilton Island was one of the highlights of 2017 for Murray. Other big moments included a win at the Cape Town World Cup, a hat-trick at the New Plymouth World Cup

and three WTS podiums.

Murray is very excited with the prospect of the Super League in the coming seasons.

“It was a great experience. I’m leading the rankings so far and I am keen to make sure that I stay up there. The new series is very refreshing and I believe that this will grow from event to event.” Murray finished third in the second event on Jersey Island. It was also the last race of his season.

“I do have plans for another 70.3. And I will race in the Super League events as well as a few WTS events. There will probably be fewer Bundesliga races next year,” he says.

UWK (241/4) is stewig geplaas teen Langa (151/7 gesl.) danksy Ridaa Isaacs (114), Mujahid Toffar (70) en Luke Philander (4/34), terwyl Bellville (179/7 gesl.) ewe goed geplaas is teen Kaapstad (139).

Dewald Botha (7/46 en 37) en Lenert van Wyk (54) het blink vertoon.

Durbanville (154/6) het die hef in die hand teen Victoria (134) ná stewige bydraes deur Kuda Samunderu (73), Jean Strydom (39) en GF Linde (4/12). In sy debuut in die WP-kompetisie het Brackenfell (135 en 25/4) taamlik wankelrig begin teen Ottomans (179). Loren-

zo Jacobs (4/17) en Wiaan Smit (3/30 en 30) het die beste vertoon vir die Brakke. Milnerton (212) het ook ’n agterstand teen WPklub (251/3), maar Damian Crowley (66) en Jonathan Schwerin (52) het hul kant gebring.

In die eerste liga vaar Edgemead (170) met sy goed gebalanseerde boulaanval uitstekend teen Groenpunt (68 en 87/5).

Robert Marshall (43) en Dylan Verreyne (36) het die beste met die kolf gevaar. Kraaifontein (210/7 gesl.) het in sy debuut in die kompetisie ook goed afgeskop teen Gugulethu (89 en 21/2). Darryl Losper (93), Seth Fledermaus (73), Arno Pekeur (3/10) en Fabian Faro (3/17) was die Kraaie se staatmakers.

Tygerberg-klub (174/8 gesl.) trek nog gelyk met Strandfontein (172/9 gesl.) met

knap bydraes deur Neil Abrahams (61), Luwaaz September (41 en 4/42) en Franco Kasner (3/32). Maar Noordelikes-Goodwood (201) is

op die agtervoet teen Primrose (261/6 gesl.).

Quewin O’Connor (82) en Lieve Mdlonleni (50) het nietemin voortreflik gekolf.
