7DE LAAN FIRE: FOUNDATION ASSISTS VICTIMS AFTER 649 PEOPLE LEFT DESTITUTE

Fire in 7de Laan TARRYNLEIGH SOLOMONS @tarryns07

T

he Mustadafin Foundation brought some relief to victims of the fire that ravaged the 7de Laan informal settlement in Valhalla Park by handing over food parcels last week Thursday. The fire, which destroyed 120 structures, ripped through the informal dwellings on 26 December 2017 and left 649 people destitute. The fire was apparently caused by a stove that had been left unattended. The City of Cape Town’s Disaster Risk Management spokesperson, Charlotte Powell, says the City’s Informal Settlement Department issued enhanced fire kits for the

residents to rebuild. “Flush toilets and water taps have been replaced. The Electricity Department made an assessment to have electricity restored,” says Powell. According to the foundation’s disaster coordinator, Ebrahiem Smith, since the fire occurred most structures have been rebuilt. Residents visited the Valhalla Park Civic Hall to collect food parcels packaged by the Mustadafin Foundation. Foundation spokesperson, Nazley Rulumente, says a representative of each of the 120 affected families collected parcels. “The families were also issued with crockery, such as cups and plates, and a 10kg bag of maize meal.

“They were all overwhelmed and thankful of the food hampers,” says Rulumente. She says that even though food parcels were distributed, they still need assistance with donations of school supplies. “Mustadafin has been working in Valhalla Park for years where we provide a feeding scheme once a week just a few houses away from the hall and we assist the community with other means, if possible. “As for the fire victims, our next step is to help the school children with uniforms and stationery to start the school year. However, we can’t make promises as we are reliant on the donations we receive.” V To assist with donations, contact Nazley on 021 633 0010.
