MATROOSFONTEIN: THREE FAMILIES LEFT HOMELESS
Fire displaces families TARRYN-LEIGH SOLOMONS @tarryns07
T
hree families have been displaced after a fire broke out at their homes in Kent Crescent, Matroosfontein, on Friday 9 February. According to the City of Cape Town’s Theo Layne, firefighters responded to the scene at 22:45. “Four wood and iron structures, plus one
dwelling, were destroyed in the fire. Ten people have been displaced. Fortunately there were no fatalities, but three adults and one minor suffered smoke inhalation. “One person sustained a laceration to the body,” says Layne. The cause remains undetermined. A helpful resident of the area, Craig Oliver, is appealing to the public for assistance in donations for the families. “This is a very difficult time for the fami-
lies because they lost everything. I’ve taken the responsibility to help them as much as I can because I care for my neighbours. “These families need clothes, food, anything that could bring a little relief to them,” says Oliver. He tells TygerBurger that he found it within himself to take in one of the families. “I have one family staying me so I’m trying to assist as much as I can. My house is actually in the same road as where the fire
broke out. I wasn’t at home at the time of the incident though. “When I returned home the following day [Saturday 10 February], I saw the damage and thought I needed to step in. This family consists of the mother, father and three children. “The other fire victims were by their relatives and friends,” explains Oliver.
