BONTEHEUWEL: CANAL, DUMPING CAUSING PLAGUE

esidents of Netreg in Bonteheuwel say they are fed up with the plague of mosquitoes in the area. They have described how they use a bottle of Doom multi-insect spray daily to get rid of the insects. The canal, which runs next to the Netreg train station in Ranunculus Street, has water in it which doesn’t flow. This, among other things such as illegal

dumping, is believed to be contributing to the problem. A concerned resident, Helen Hendricks, says this is a health hazard because she uses a bottle of Doom every day. “I honestly use a tin of Doom a day and it’s not cheap. They just don’t stop buzzing and that is so frustrating. This is now the third consecutive year that we’ve had this problem. “Whenever I spray the Doom, they of course die. The disgusting part is that when I enter the room in which I sprayed, it looks
like a heap of dirt, but meanwhile it’s mosquitoes. At night we can’t even sleep with our windows open and it so hot in the house. “The problem with the Doom as well is that we inhale that smell all the time. It’s just not healthy.” Another resident, Aminah Donson, who stays right opposite the canal, shares her experience of the problem. “This canal needs to be closed. One does not even look forward to sleeping anymore because at night all we do is fight with mosquitoes. People who do
not live here won’t understand what we are going through.” Ward 31 councillor, Jonathan Cupido, says unfortunately illegal dumping is one of the main contributors towards rodents and the current mosquito plaque in the area. “Council has plans to have the canal cleaned out and treated for the rodents and mosquitoes and to have an educational programme running through the area focusing on illegal dumping.
