Return of ‘The R5 meals’ The Shoprite group has re-introduced its R5 deli meals having subsidised more than 150 million meals since inception in 2017. The group has further subsidised its 600g in-house baked bread which remains at R4.99 since 2016. Stores sold 63 million R4.99 bread loaves in the past financial year. The group says with the effects of the pandemic on unemployment, increased hunger and food insecurity plagues vulnerable communities. The meal is the group’s effort to make sure that someone with just R5 in their pocket can afford to eat a hot meal.
FESTIVE SEASON CRIME: WATCH GROUPS NEED ACTIVE MEMBERS
Shortage of patrollers W
ith the festive season approaching, neighbourhood watches in Goodwood have called on willing residents to join the watch group to assist in fighting crime. According to Glenwood NHW chair, James Ellis, they don’t have enough patrollers to monitor the area on a constant basis. “We do have the occasional opportunistic incidents of crime, along with theft out of motor vehicles. Basically, all crimes and related issues are a challenge not only to the neighbourhood watches, but every resident. We are encouraging our residents to please join our neighbourhood watch, alternatively start a blockwatch, which we will certainly support and assist all the way.” Ellis says there has been no increase or decline in crime in the area.
“The situation in Glenwood is reasonably under control, directly as a result of constant patrolling in the area by our patrollers. I strongly believe that visibility plays a big role in fighting crime. This is now during day and night. “Our patrollers need to be thanked and congratulated for all the effort and time that is put in. We cannot exclude our residents as they themselves play a vital role in having a safe area. These people are also our eyes and ears, and without them the task of fighting crime could have been more difficult. The same feeling is towards our armed response companies who are in support of combating crime too.” Ellis also noted that there continues to be an increase in vagrants moving into Goodwood in its entirety. “This has become a great problem and as in the case of the bigger Goodwood, we do have an increase of vagrants and specially
under the bridge of Jakes Gerwel Drive and on the side of Fort Ikapa, next to the railway line, where two camps have been set up right along the railway line up to Monte Vista Station. These areas are basically the borderline of Glenwood.” He notes that not all vagrants are involved in criminal activity, but for those who are Ellis says they lure other unwanted elements into the area whereby they also wheel and deal in certain stolen goods, including drugs. “The abuse of alcohol is extreme and leads to a substantial amount of fighting, verbal abuse and noise pollution. We have been fortunate and have managed to keep these vagrants from sleeping or setting up shelters in between the residential areas. From the side of the Glenwood Neighbourhood Watch, we have requested the intervention by the Cities Displaced Unit, law enforcement and other entities, but due to the land belonging

to the national government, this seems to be a problem for these entities to intervene and have these vagrants removed. “Also, we do have some residents still giving food parcels, clothing and extras to these vagrants feeling that they are helping these people. My request is, and I believe more people feel the same, to give responsibly and we do have organisations earmarked by the City of Cape Town who can be supported.” Ellis advises that with the holiday season approaching residents should be more vigilant. “We are furthermore encouraging and reminding our residents that the festive season is upon us, so please be aware of your surroundings, vehicles parked outside and don’t leave valuables visible in vehicles. Make sure your alarms are tested by your armed response companies. We are here for each other, so please let’s be the eyes and ears for all in our area.” V To page 2
