Ice age animals come alive Two local children admire a life-sized Sabre-toothed Tiger at the opening of Ice Slides at CapeGate Shopping Centre last week. This magical ice age-themed world features three different toboggan-style ice slides, seven different life-sized animals that lived during the ice age, set in a background to simulate their natural environment of the time. You can learn all about the woolly mammoth, sabertoothed tiger, Irish elk, terror bird and glyptodon. The exhibition closes on 7 July.
VASCO ESTATE: ‘IT’S LIKE A RACE COURSE’
Cars disturb the peace TARRYN-LEIGH SOLOMONS @tarryns07
I
nstead of a peaceful Sunday morning, residents of Vasco Estate situated in Goodwood say sometimes they are woken up by revving cars speeding down Frans Conradie Drive giving chase in what’s supposed to be a breakfast run. The most recent run was on Sunday 9 Ju-
ne. “A breakfast run is supposed to be something peaceful where car clubs meet up and have breakfast, not disturbing the peace as early as 07:00,” says a 74-year-old resident who requested anonymity. She says she has been staying in the area for 47 years and only recently started experiencing the issue of racing. “From my balcony, I am able to see everything that the guys do. The gathering starts at Burger King and from there they
(turn onto Joe Simon Street) and race down Frans Conradie onto Vasco Boulevard.” The discontented woman says from Vasco Boulevard she assumes they turn right onto Solly Smiedt Street then back to Burger King’s parking area. “It’s like a race course.” “My biggest concern is what if something happens, like a big accident, or a pedestrian gets injured by these speeding cars. I understand that this is what young guys do and
it’s an adrenalin rush for them, but surely this shouldn’t be happening in a residential area. Here are so many older people who live in the area and we just want the youngsters to be considerate of us.” Mariana van Huyssteen (59) says this specific morning she underwent chemo therapy for her breast cancer, but could not rest due to the noise.
