CRIME STATISTICS RELEASED: MURDERS ARE RANDOM

rime statistics for Goodwood police station has shown that murder has seen a significant increase of 200% since the previous financial year. Police Minister Bheki Cele released the annual crime statistics on Friday 31 July for the period between April last year and March this year. Attempted murder has gone up by 80% from five in the previous year, to nine in 2019/2020, while assault with the intent to inflict grievous bodily harm increased by 21% from 62 to 75. Common robbery saw an increase of 33,3% from 171 in 2018/2019 to 228 in the current

year. Rape cases went up by six cases, from 16 in the previous year to 22 this year. The good news is that the number of sexual assault cases dropped by 26,7% from 15 to 11 cases this year. After reviewing the latest crime statistics, Goodwood Community Policing Forum (CPF) chair John Ross said crime tendencies in Goodwood has largely remained the same. “Our hot spots are being identified on an ongoing basis and patrols are adapted as hot spots change. “Regarding the increase in the rape statistics, it needs to be mentioned that the majority was domestic related and arrests were made in most of the cases. The increased reporting of rape cases shows increased confidence in the police. Regarding the increased

murder rate, one must take into account that three of the murders appears to have taken place elsewhere and the bodies ‘dumped’ in Goodwood. We also had two underworld ‘hits’. Most of the other murders are random making it difficult to police,” said Ross. He added: “Having said that, we, the CPF, are not minimizing murders or rapes. Every rape, sexual assault or murder is unacceptable. With the lifting of the ban on NHW patrols, police have extra eyes out there and the results as shown by arrests initiated by the patrollers is evident.” Station commander Col Sibusiso Mntambo said a hot spot area for robberies has been identified. “The Voortrekker Road corridor is targeted by robbers.

“We urge the community to be more vigilant and aware of their surroundings.” Goodwood has seen no arson cases since the 2016/ 2017 financial year. Burglaries have seen a steady drop. The current figures are as follows: . Burglary at non-residential premises dropped by 27,5% from 138 last year to 100 cases this financial year. . Burglary at residential premises saw a decline of 27% from 337 cases to 246. . There was a 17,6% drop in theft of motor vehicles and motor cycles from 159 to 131 cases. . Theft out of or from motor vehicle saw a decline of 7% from 618 cases in the previous financial year to 575 cases in the current year.
