A

n application for the demolition of the houses at 68 and 70 Milton Road, Goodwood has been submitted to the City of Cape Town. Residents had previously complained about the vacant properties, which had been extensively vandalised

(“Vandals target houses”, 11/2019).

The owner of the properties, who requested anonymity, confirmed to TygerBurger that he has applied for demolition of the two houses. A fire broke out at 68 Milton Road on Thursday 30 January. The fire also damaged the house at 66 Milton Road.

“It’s better to demolish the properties as it poses as a safety risk for neighbours as va-

grants are occupying the properties,” the owner says.

The City of Cape Town’s Mayco member for spatial planning and environment, Marian Niewouldt confirmed the demolition application was received. “An application for demolition was submitted to the local development management district office on Thursday 30 January.”

Vivienne Murison says she was woken up in the early hours of Thursday 30 January when her house alarm was triggered. “It was about 03:30. The house alarm went off. I went to deactivate it and got back into bed. But, moments later the alarm went off again. I looked outside and just saw flames and smoke,” she says.

óg ’n slagoffer van Durbanville is haar geld kwyt nadat sy drie selfone aanlyn op Gumtree verkoop het.

TygerBurger het kort tevore berig oor ’n ander voorval waarin ’n 18-jarige man van Durbanville Hills R5 000 verloor het toe hy sy Playstation 4 Console op Gumtree te koop geadverteer het (“Man R5 000 kwyt”, 22 Januarie).

In albei voorvalle blyk dit die verkopers is bedrieg deurdat die SMS of e-pos met bewys van betaling vals was.

In die jongste voorval het ’n vrou (41) van Eversdal op 21 Januarie tussen 12:20 en 14:00 drie selfone geadverteer – R3 000 vir ’n Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge en R1 500 elk vir ’n Samsung J5 en ’n iPhone 5S. Skaars ’n halfuur later het ’n man, ene Oliver, haar op WhatsApp gekontak en laat blyk hy stel belang om die drie selfone te koop.

“Hy het met ’n vreemde Afrika-aksent gepraat. Hy het gesê hy sal iemand stuur om die selfone te kom haal,” sê sy.

“Ek het ’n e-pos van Nedbank met bewys

van betaling ontvang. Dit het vir my geldig gelyk,” sê sy.

Sy het ook ’n SMS van haar eie bank, Absa, ontvang dat die bedrag geld in haar bankrekening inbetaal is – vermoedelik ook vals.

“Die koper het my aanmekaar gebel en gesê ek moet die advertensies van Gumtree afhaal. Om die waarheid te sê, hy het my seker tien keer gebel in die tydjie wat ek besig was om een van die selfone skoon te maak,” sê sy.

Die man wat die fone kom haal het, het reeds buite in ’n motor gesit en wag. “Hy was binne tien minute nadat ek die bewys van betaling gekry het voor my deur.”

Toe sy die volgende oggend haar rekening nagaan om seker te maak die geld is inbetaal, was geen geld inbetaal nie.

Sy het nóg ’n dag gewag en die koper gebel. Hy het gesê daar moet seker iewers ’n probleem wees en dat hy haar sou terugbel.

“Hy het nooit teruggebel nie en toe ek hom weer gebel het, het hy nie sy foon geantwoord nie.

“Ek het vir hom ’n WhatsApp gestuur dat die geld nooit inbetaal is nie; ek kon sien hy het dit gelees, maar hy het nie geantwoord

nie.

“Toe ek hom ’n boodskap op WhatsApp gestuur het oor hoekom hy nie sy foon antwoord nie, het hy net ’n ‘smiley’ teruggestuur. Ek het hom daarvan beskuldig dat hy my fone gesteel het en hy het geantwoord: ‘I am not a thief,’” sê sy.

Sy het die fone laat swartlys en ’n klag by die polisie aanhangig gemaak.

TygerBurger het navraag by ’n paar banke gedoen oor hoe om vas te stel of ’n bewys van betaling geldig is.

Volgens ’n konsultant by Absa se kliëntedienssentrum is dit slegs moontlik vir die bank om ’n bewys van betaling na te gaan vir egtheid as dit per e-pos gestuur is. Volgens die konsultant is dit beter om te vra vir ’n bewys van betaling per e-pos. Kliënte kan self hul rekening nagaan vir die egtheid van ’n bewys van betaling per SMS. Ook by Nedbank is dit slegs moontlik om ’n bewys van betaling na te gaan as dit per e-pos is. Volgens die konsultant sal ’n kliënt slegs ’n bewys van betaling van Nedbank ontvang as die geld in sy rekening inbetaal is en die bedrag reeds in sy rekening reflekteer. Kliënte moet dit self nagaan vir die egtheid daarvan.

According to the City’s fire and rescue spokesperson, Jermaine Carelse, the cause of the fire is not known.

aron Oktober (12) from Thornton is heading to Belgium in July to take part in the 11th World Choir Games.

The Thornton Primary School learner attends the Lizl Gaffley Choral Academy in Kensington. “Until last year this was a girlsonly choir, which recently started accepting boys, of which he was one of the first. They have about five boys now. Aaron joined this choir last year (2019) on the 1 July, however, he has been a member of his school choir since the age of 7, starting in the junior choir and progressing to the senior choir.

He still sings for the school choir,” says his father, Clayton de Mink.

He says Aaron has always wanted to sing and often tells his parents that he wants to “be on TV one day.”

De Mink says he has always encouraged singing, but described Aaron as very shy.

“I always told him, ‘If you want to be on TV, you’ll have to learn to speak a lot more, be more open and interact with people more freely’. Joining the choir definitely helped him come out of his shell. He loves being in the spotlight and it’s very evident, watching and helping him rehearse for his very animated and theatrical class orals or when he sings a duet on stage at school which he has done a few times over the years.”

Aaron is busy with choir rehearsals at the school and the academy takes place at least thrice a week. “The school choir practices on Wednesday mornings before school starts, and, at the Choral Academy, practice is every Saturday (directly after his soccer

practice/matches), and ranges between four to seven hours. He also practices some Fridays, Saturdays and Mondays with the academy when needed.”

His mother, Lezaan Oktober says joining the choir has definitely made him more confident. “He really is disciplined, both academically and personally. Aaron doesn’t have to be woken up in the morning, he is always punctual. His bed is made up even before he sets foot out of his room. He doesn’t need any help getting ready for school. He has just been elected class monitor which requires him to be at school by 07:30 every morning. He comes home from school and immediately gets his homework, study work and reading done.

“He has been a top performing learner for years and came second place in class last year. He makes us extremely proud. I can definitely say, a huge part of the qualities he has learned is due to him being in the choirs and the two choir masters, Angelo Sweeney (Thornton Primary School) and Lizl Gaffley (Lizl Gaffley Choral Academy).”

Lezaan adds that her son’s dream is to go overseas and pursue a career in singing.

“Aaron really loves to sing and the only thing I want for him is to experience this once in a lifetime opportunity with the choir.”

To raise funds for the trip, Lezanne started opened a Back-A-Buddy crowdfunding account to ensure that Aaron’s dream can be made a reality.

Du Preez says she owes her achievement to her mentors, colleagues and fellow interns. “I invested a lot of time and hard work, but if it was not for my fellow intern colleagues, manager and various mentors, I would have been lost. It is to them that I owe this great accomplishment.”

She completed her Bachelor of Arts Honours, majoring in geography at UWC in 2018 and is in the process of completing her Masters in Urban Policy through the University of Cape Town’s African Centre for Cities.

The City’s Mayco member for corporate services, Sharon Cottle, says Du Preez had the opportunity to work alongside research experts in the City’s policy and strategy department.

“There she was exposed to various research and data analytic projects and assisted with interpreting data for some key projects, and contributed towards research pieces.”

“I commend Bronwin for her contribution to her department. Her attitude and approach to her work was truly outstanding. I believe she inspired many around her. She is a great example to young people who are eager to grow in their professional careers,” says Cottle.

‘Dognapping suspects’ save the day NETTALIE VILJOEN

wo days after Bella, an 11-week-old german shepherd, went missing from her home, her family had given up hope of ever seeing her again.

Dayyaan Ismail says the puppy disappeared from their yard in Bothasig on Sunday 19 January. He immediately posted on Facebook, asking for help in finding her.

“For a solid 24 hours, until 02:00 in the morning, we received comments. A lot of people posted they had seen two men in a black GTI Volkswagen Golf in Vryburger Avenue, driving away with a german shepherd. A few said the car was grey; others said silver.”

But 48 hours later, they still didn’t have a solid lead. On the Wednesday morning, Dayyaan’s wife, Ferial, received a message, saying someone was seen walking the dog in Grassy Park.

“At that point, I realised Bella was gone.

We basically gave up,” says Dayyaan.

Two hours later, he got a call from his barber, Youssef Tazi, saying he had something for him.

“We are also good friends, and I knew he drives a silver GTI, so when he phoned me, everything made sense,” says Dayyaan.

It turns out the two “suspects” accused of dognapping in the Facebook posts were actually the good guys.

Youssef is one of the owners of Barber’s Range, a chain of barber shops in Bothasig, Plumstead, Steenberg, Claremont, Plattekloof and Century City. His home, which he shares with his business partner, Ali Elmkadad, is close to the shop in Bothasig. Youssef says he and Ali usually drive to work together, but that morning he was running late and Ali decided to walk.

“Driving down Vryburger Avenue a few minutes later, I saw Ali, talking to a vagrant on the side of the road. The vagrant was holding a puppy,” says Youssef.

He pulled over to investigate.

“Ali kept on asking him where he got the dog, but he kept avoiding the question,” says Youssef.

They eventually offered the vagrant R20 and took the dog home. Two days later, the “lost puppy” post surfaced in his Facebook feed. To his surprise, the dog’s owner was his client and friend Dayyaan.

Although Bella’s adventure ended in a warm reunion with her family, not all puppies who go missing are as lucky.

Belinda Abraham, communications, resource development and education manager at the SPCA, says there seems to be a growing trend of animals disappearing from their homes with no obvious signs of escape.

“Power breeds are at the greatest risk of being stolen for dog fighting or breeding and smaller breeds may find themselves bait for dogfight training purposes or they are sold for monetary gain,” Abraham says.

She advises pet owners to microchip their animals.

“It provides you with proof of ownership.

Neutering and spaying also reduce the risk of theft for breeding purposes,” she says.

If your pet has been stolen, Abraham advises you lay a charge of theft at your nearest police station.

“Stolen pets may be dumped if a buyer is not found, so notify your local animal welfare organisations. Raise as much awareness as possible for your missing pet.”

Abrahams says buying a puppy from a hawker perpetuates a cycle of abuse and cruelty.

She says these individuals are likely to either be stealing owned animals or breeding indiscriminately, with no concern for breeding females’ living conditions.

What you should do is to post pictures of these repeat offenders on social media.

“In doing so, a case file is built up which strengthens our motivation when appealing for a harsher sentence against the perpetrator,” says Abrahams.

Those looking for a pet are asked to first consider adopting from the SPCA. “While many of our puppies and adult dogs are wonderful mix breeds, we often ha-

Coronavirus discussed at Tygerberg campus An information session on the Coronavirus was presented by a panel of experts from the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at Stellenbosch University (SU), at their Tygerberg campus on Friday (31 January).

During the session, virology and infectious disease experts briefed the media, staff and students on the novel coronavirus.

The information session, entitled “The coronavirus from Wuhan – what to expect in South Africa” was held in the packed JN de Villiers boardroom.

Prof Wolfgang Preiser (medical virology), Dr Jantjie Taljaard (adult infectious diseases) and Dr Nokwazi Nkosi (medical virology) explained the origin and clinical presentation of the disease, and unpacked the measures that are in place to manage and treat the disease, should it present in South Africa. According to a fact sheet released by SU, cases of pneumonia, not caused by any known virus, started occuring in the city of Wuhan in China in early December 2019.

At the end of that month, Chinese authorities confirmed there was an outbreak and that they had closed down a seafood and wildlife market suspected to be linked to it. A week later, the discovery of a previously unknown virus was announced – a coronavirus, which is a family of viruses that include the common cold, Sars and Mers virus. The new virus was temporarily named 2019-nCoV and is often referred to as the novel coronavirus, SU stated.

The statement continued that, “Any new virus is a concern as health care providers have very limited knowledge of how it affects people or how best to manage it.

“Early on during the outbreak, many of the patients in Wuhan reportedly had links to the animal market, suggesting zoonotic transmission from an unknown type of animal to people. However, a growing number of patients have not had

such exposure to animals, indicating person-to-person spread is occurring.”

Healthcare-associated transmission has also been reported, according to SU. Since then, the disease has been detected in most parts of China and in several countries around the globe, usually affecting travellers from areas with documented cases of 2019-nCoV, or people who have come into contact with such travellers.

According to medical experts, new research about the novel coronavirus is still emerging, and it is thought that person-toperson infection occurs via respiratory droplets produced when an infected person coughs or sneezes – similar to how influenza and other respiratory pathogens spread.

Symptomatic patients present the highest risk for infection, but there are also unconfirmed reports of transmission taking place during the incubation period.

Patients with 2019-nCoV have mainly presented with the following symptoms: fever, cough and shortness of breath.

“The infection can present as a fairly mild respiratory illness, but in severe cases may lead to pneumonia and even death.”

Elderly people and those with underlying illness seem to have a higher risk of severe illness and death. Experts advise the public that the risk of infection with the novel coronavirus in South Africa is very low at present (31 January 2020).

“Possible suspected cases (as defined by the National Institute for Communicable Diseases, NICD) are tested and placed in precautionary isolation. If you feel ill, and have been to China in the past few weeks, or have had contact with someone who was there, please seek medical attention urgently, stating clearly your exposure and symptoms,” experts said.

Common hygiene practices like frequently washing your hands can minimise your risk of infection or spreading the disease to others.

Steenbokkies ‘gered’ ESMÉ ERASMUS ier steenbokkies wat hulle op ’n konstruksieterrein in Pinehurst bevind het, het verlede Maandag groener weivelde gevind danksy spanwerk deur Garden Cities en verskeie stadsdepartemente. ’n Soek-en-reddingsoperasie is gehou om die bokkies te vang en na die plaas Groot Phesantekraal te verskuif.

“Garden Cities was onbewus van die bokkies op die stuk grond waar ’n nuwe ontwikkeling beoog word,” sê Danielle Cronje, omgewingsbeampte vir Garden Cities.

“Toe siviele werk vroeg in Januarie begin het, het inwoners Garden Cities ingelig oor twee bokkies wat tussen die wingerde bly.

“Garden Cities het dadelik die Stad Kaapstad se biodiversiteitsbestuursdepartement gekontak oor wat om te doen.

“Die Stad het binne ’n dag ’n reddingspan op die been gebring, met die ondersteuning van CapeNature,” sê sy.

Die span het bestaan uit 41 personeellede van verskeie van die Stad se natuurreserva-

te, insluitend die Durbanville- en Tygerberg-natuurreservate, asook senior personeellede van die Stad se biodiversiteitsbestuursdepartement en Garden Cities.

Steenbokkies (Raphicerus campestris) is een van die kleiner wildsoorte in Afrika.

“Ons het eerstehands ervaar hoe só ’n operasie uitgevoer het. Nette is opgerig om die area waarin die bokkies was, te verklein en só die bokkies te vang,” sê sy.

Vier steenbokkies is ontdek – twee rammetjies, ’n ooitjie en ’n jong bokkie.

Nadat die bokkies gevang is, is hul oë bedek en het ’n veearts hulle ’n verdowingsmiddel ingespuit om hulle kalm te hou.

Die bokkies is in ’n krat gelaai en net meer as twee uur nadat die operasie begin het, is hulle veilig op Groot Phesantekraal met die toestemming van CapeNature losgelaat.

“Samewerking van hierdie aard tussen ontwikkelaars en die Stad is van kritieke belang vir volhoubare ontwikkeling in ons gebied. Garden Cities hoop om hierdie samewerking met die Stad voort te sit om te verseker dat die natuurlike habitat beskerm word,” sê Cronje.

T

he fight against cable theft continues as law enforcement officers arrested five men in Epping and Elsies River.

On Tuesday 28 January officers attached to the City of Cape Town’s rail enforcement unit received a tip off about occupants in a BMW vehicle attempting to sell railway cable at a scrap metal dealer in Epping.

Law enforcement spokesperson Wayne Dyason says the driver of the BMW had an unlucky escape.

“Unfortunately for the suspects, their vehicle ran out of fuel and they came to halt not far from the scrap dealers premises. The officers arrived and spotted the vehicle being pushed towards the BP garage in Epping.

“The officers observed the situation from a distance and as the suspect was busy refueling the officers pounced. They discovered railway cables with an estimate weight of 33kg with a scrap value of about R2 317.

“The suspect who is also a bucket shop owner in Belhar was arrested for being in possession of stolen property. The suspect was detained at Elsies River police station.”

In a separate incident in Epping on Friday 24 January, Dyason says four people were nabbed after trying to sell railway cables.

This is after the City’s law enforcement, rail enforcement and metal theft units received a tip off of four people trying to sell railway copper cables at a scrap metal dealer in Epping.

“The team saw the suspects in a parked vehicle and approached them. Inside the vehicle they discovered copper cable weighing 101kg with an estimated value of R8 080.

The suspects were arrested for being in possession of stolen property and charged in terms of the Criminal Matters Amendment Act for damage to essential infrastructure.

The suspects vehicle was also impounded.”

The Passenger Rail Agency South Africa (Prasa) says they are experiencing unprecedented levels of vandalism across all the regional Metrorail and Shosholoza Meyl services resulting in massive disruption to services.

“The railway lines are operable but subject to speed restrictions, manual authorisations and other operational working methods resulting in longer travel times.”

Provincial Metrorail spokesperson Riana Scott says external socio-economic issues wholly unrelated to the provision of mobility impact on the region’s ability to render an acceptable service.

This includes but is not limited to: . Vagrancy; . homelessness; . drug abuse and peddling; . illegal electrical connections underneath and over our infrastructure; . informal settlements burgeoning within the rail reserve due to lack of serviced land; . lack of street to street access across/underneath the rail system; . disposal of wet waste due to lack of sanitation facilities; . unemployment leading to sustained and recurring pilfering of rail assets; . on-going trading of so-called ‘bucket shops’/illegal scrap dealers that are not closed down and provide ready cash for scrap metal; and . unbridled crime in and around rail precincts spilling over into trains and stations. motors, borehole pumps and garden tools,” says Theunis.

@dezzierorke A total of 160 people died on Western Cape roads during the festive season, of which 62 were in the Cape Town metropolitan area.

This indicates a reduction of 23% from the previous year’s (2018) 207 deaths, even though there was a greater influx into the province, compared to the previous season, due to the drought conditions.

Festive season road fatalities were released by provincial minister of transport and public works, Bonginkosi Madikizela, at Gene Louw Traffic College last week Wednesday (29 January).

The verified statistics were recorded from 1 December 2019 to 15 January 2020.

“While every death is one too many, this number represents a significant improvement of the work done by our provincial services who conduct 24/7 operations on provincial roads,” Madikizela said.

Even so, Madikizela expressed his concern over the high fatality rate specifically on municipal roads within the province, with Cape Town at the top of the list.

Fatalities recorded on municipal roads during the same time tallies at 108 compared with last year’s 92.

In response to this the minister held talks with Mayor Dan Plato on 19 January to discuss road safety in the city. “(In terms of fatalities), the biggest problem in the Cape Town currently is that of pedestrians,” said Madikizela.

A total of 33 pedestrians died on Cape Town roads over the festive season. So did two cyclists, two motorcyclists, 14 drivers and 11 passengers.

Contributing factors, according to the minister, are speeding, drunk driving, not using seatbelts and driver behaviour.

“It is shocking to see the number of people who drive under the influence of alcohol,” he said. He stressed the fact that most road violations occur during the evenings.

For this reason law enforcement visibility on the city roads would have to increase during this time. Most worrisome to Madikizela is that traffic violations are not being taken seriously by the public or justice system.

Drunk drivers are released without bail and fines simply don’t deter speedsters, he said. “This culture will only change when the punishment fits the crime.”

Madikizela said he would be engaging in talks with national government and other stakeholders to address this issue.

A miracle for Mila Koekemoer DESIRÉE RORKE @dezzierorke

W

hat was to be a carefree holiday for a Brackenfell mom and her young daughter turned into a nightmare, when Mila Koekemoer (9) was diagnosed with stage 3 cancer on 2 January.

Mom and daughter were away on a camping trip to the West Coast when Mila complained about tummy cramps on 29 December.

Mom Michelle took her for x-rays in Vredenburg and she was given medication to treat what appeared to be a blockage in her intestines.

“A doctor in Cape Town then saw a little mark right at the top of the x-ray and requested for her to have another x-ray done, higher up including the tummy and chest area,” says Alicia Sevenoaks, Mila’s aunt.

What seemed like an “air bubble” around her lung area, turned out to be a mass.

She was immediately referred to Tygerberg Hospital’s oncology department where blood tests were done along with a biopsy from both her hips to extract bone marrow.

“Still they couldn’t identify the exact cancer and Mila had to undergo surgery on 3 January at the Vincent Palotti hospital where they did a bigger biopsy and inserted a port into her right upper area for future chemo,” says Alicia.

More tests followed on 15 Janu-

ary and it was established that Mila has neuroblastoma.

“To hear your child has cancer, is devastating. The tumour was already as big as a cricket ball and weighed 500g. It pressed against her intestines, and that caused the blockage.

“Neuroblastoma was a word most of us didn’t even know existed, but now it has become a frightening reality in our lives.”

It is a cancer commonly found in the small glands (adrenal) on top of the kidneys. It can develop in the stomach, chest, neck, pelvis and bones. Children aged five or younger are most commonly affected.

Symptoms may include fatigue, loss of appetite and fever, according to Cansa.

The following day the family spent the day at the Red Cross Children’s Hospital for scans and were relieved to find out that the cancer has not spread to her bones.

Mila went for her first chemo on 17 January but suffered severe allergic reactions to the first three chemo drips.

“It was established that she was allergic to the preservative in the medication,” says Alicia.

“As soon as the first drop entered her body she turned red, got a rush of bumps under her skin and could not breath. She was given an antidote to start breathing again.”

According to Alicia the only alternative chemo medication is not available in South Africa and has to be imported.

Several community events have already been planned for the year ahead and includes a Valentine’s picnic at Pier Place rooftop in the city, a full moon family walk on 8 April at Meerendal Wine Estate, and a charity golf day at Kuils River Golf Club on 16 April, after which Wickus van der Merwe and singer Fatman will perform and the prize-giving at Palms restaurant. The public can attend this prize-giving.

Furthermore the campaign is running a raffle with massive prizes.

“Mila is currently coping well emotionally, but there are days where she is completely unreachable. She understands she is sick but battles to deal with it emotionally.

She did however on her own accord decide to cut her hair shorter and asked for it to be donated to another cancer patient who needed it,” says Alicia. “She told me, ‘I want them to feel pretty again’,”.

Bradley Herold, ’n voormalige leerder aan die Hoërskool Bishop Lavis, sê hy sukkel al twee jaar lank om werk te kry.

Hy bly saam met sy ma, Anna Herold (52), en ouma.

Hy is die jongste van twee kinders. Sy ma kan ná ’n beroerte nie praat nie en sy ouma is blind.

Herold het aan TygerBurger verduidelik hy moes nadat hul van Robertson na Bishop Lavis getrek het, by ’n nuwe skool inskryf en daarvoor was sy geboortesertifikaat nodig.

Hy sê in 2018 is hy na die departement van binne­landse sake om aansoek vir ’n nuwe geboortesertifikaat te doen. ’n Duplikaat is vir hom gedruk, waarna hy die fout agtergekom het. Dit was dieselfde tyd dat hy in matriek was.

“Ons het R70 Bradley Herold se betaal om die fout reg te stel. Ek kon nie aansoek vir ’n identiteitsdokument doen nie omdat die geboortesertifikaat verkeerd was. Die fout is nog steeds nie herstel nie en ek is al ’n paar keer na Bellville se de-

duplikaat-geboortesertifikaat. partement van binne­landse sake om op te volg.

“Dit is regtig niks lekker nie.

Almal saam met wie ek op skool was, maak vordering met hul lewens en hier sit ek en wag vir die departement van binne­landse sake om die fout reg te stel.

“Dit raak ook baie frustrerend omdat ek graag iets in my lewe wil bereik, maar ek kan nie,” sê Herold.

Vir sy matriekeksamen is hy toegelaat om te skryf, want “die skool het die situasie verstaan”.

Hy sê hy dit is onregverdig wat met hom gebeur het.

“Mense sal nooit verstaan hoe dit voel om in hierdie situasie te wees. Daar is dae wat ek aan depressie ly omdat ek vir my ouma en ma wil sorg, maar ek kan nie.

“Ek weet ek kan groot dinge doen met my lewe, maar nou word ek teruggehou weens iets wat nie eens my fout is nie.

“Om ’n bietjie geld te maak, doen ek ’n paar jobs in die gemeenskap, maar dit is nie waar ek myself sien nie. Ek het matriek met univer­siteitstoelating geslaag, maar kyk waar sit ek,” sê Herold.

Swemlesse vir seniors ‘bevrydend’ NIELEN DE KLERK @nielendk

ie eerste keer toe Patrick Abrahams (71) in ’n swembad geklim het, het hy so van vrees gebewe dat die swemafrigter hom moes uithaal.

Dit was bietjie meer as ’n maand gelede.

Nou sê Abrahams hy wens hy het al jare tevore die water aangedurf.

Hy is een van vele seniors (en ’n paar jonger mense) wat onder leiding van Arnold Terhart by die swembad in Bellville-Suid leer swem.

Die gratis klasse word tegnies gesproke sedert 2015 met ondersteuning van die Stad Kaapstad aangebied, maar die droogte en ander faktore het egter gemaak dat dit nie veel aftrek kry nie, vertel Arnold.

Toe lede van die Proteaville Fitness Club (vir seniors bo 50) besluit om aan te sluit, het Terhart se ledetal vinnig opgeskiet.

“Baie het ’n vrees vir water gehad,” vertel sy. “Toe kontak ons vir Arnold.”

Die groep is sedert einde Desember drie keer per week by Arnold vir lesse. Soms is daar selfs tot 30 voornemende swemmers per klas.

Hy neem almal, afhangend van hul ver­moëns, stadig deur die proses om te leer swem. Vir baie is dit ’n oorwinning om net in die swembad te staan. Daarna is een van die eerste lesse om borrels in die water te blaas en om hul gesigte te was (’n ander ervaring as jy nie met jou voete op die grond voor ’n spieël staan nie).

Baie swemmers, soos Theresa Bagley (62), is veral bang om hul kop onder die water te sit.

Leonore Wahl sê sy wou leer om die water “soos ’n vriend” te hanteer. “Ek het geen selfvertroue gehad nie. Ek wil gemaklik leer swem.”

Baie van die seniors beskryf dit as ’n bevrydende ervaring.

Die swem is goeie oefening en hulle vorder vinnig.

“Ek kan nou al selfs die doggy paddle doen,” vertel sy trots.

Terhart moedig enigiemand met ’n vrees vir die water aan om daardie eerste stap te neem.

“Kom net tot by die swembad (vir lesse).

WAT DIE HART VAN VOL IS

Daar’s geen omkyk vir ouer word nie Gisteroggend op pad werk toe kry ek ’n WhatsApp-boodskap van ’n vriendin.

Sy wens my geluk met my verjaarsdag en ek skrik, want hoe de hel het ek dan nou my eie verjaarsdag vergeet? Of erger nog, het my gesin vergeet om my geluk te wens voor hulle die huis verlaat het?

Net voor ek ’n “baie dankie”-boodskap tik sien ek die datum. Haar boodskap was een dag te vroeg. Sy verduidelik dat sy deurmekaar geraak het met my verjaarsdag en dié van iemand anders.

Fair enough.

Ek wonder toe hoekom het ek self nog nie eens werklik aan die verjaarsdag gedink nie? Deesdae sien ek mense kondig reeds lank voor die tyd aan dat nie net hul verjaarsdag op hande is nie, maar dat hulle die hele maand gaan feesvier. Hier word ek deur iemand uit my verlede daaraan herinner dat ek binnekort ’n jaar ouer word.

Dalk het dit daarmee te doen dat ek eerder fokus op volgende jaar. Dan is dit nou wat die slim mense ’n mylpaal-verjaarsdag noem. Daardie een wat jy nou werklik voel jy het die grootmenswêreld betree. Wanneer daar niks meer wegkomkans is van huisverbande, moeilike tieners en kwale nie. ’n Ouderdom waarop meeste mense, veral mans, terugkyk op hul lewe en bestekopname doen oor wat hulle bereik het, waarin hulle misluk het en wat hulle beoog om vir die volgende gedeelte van hul lewens te doen.

Dit is glo in hierdie stadium wat ouens begin voel hulle word vasgedruk deur hul huidige situasie en dan probeer om daaruit vry te breek. Sommige kêrels vang simpel goed aan soos om nuwe, duur speelgoed (lees motors of motorfietse) te koop en sommer net heeltemal buite karakter op te tree.

Hoewel ek my soms, vir vlietende oomblikke, toelaat om te wonder wat kon wees as ek in sekere tye in my lewe anders opgetree het of ander besluite geneem het, hou ek nie daarvan om te veel in die verlede rond te dwaal nie.

Die lesse wat ek moes leer uit foute in die verlede het ek hopelik geleer en sal dit hopelik nie weer maak nie. Daar is dus vir my geen nut in die verlede nie.

Behalwe dat ek lees van ’n geraamte wat wetenskaplikes onlangs gevind het in Pompeii, die antieke Romeinse stad wat deur ’n vulkaniese uitbarsting verwoes is.

Toe die Berg Vesuvius in die jaar 79 (ná Christus) skielik ontplof en warm as en gesmelte rotse op dié eens vooruitstrewende stad spoeg, kon inwoners nie vinnig genoeg wegkom nie en is die meeste gedood.

Volgens die wetenskaplikes het toetse wat op die geraamte gedoen is bewys dat dit ’n man in sy dertigs was. By die borsgedeelte van die geraamte, in sy arms vasgeklou, was ’n beursie. In die beursie was 20 silwer munte en twee van brons. Dit is toe vasgestel dat dit die munte in daardie stadium genoeg sou wees om ’n gesin van drie vir twee weke aan die lewe te hou. ’n Mens kan op twee maniere na hierdie geval kyk. Eerstens, het dié arme man dalk tot aan die einde vasgeklou aan sy salaris omdat hy geweet het dat sy gesin nie daarsonder sou oorleef nie? ’n Pa wat sy gesien se belange bo dié van sy eie plaas?

Of is dit ’n bewys dat hy so verknog was aan sy aardse besittings dat hy nie daarvan kon ontslae raak terwyl hy omkyk-omkyk vir die gevaar weggehardloop het nie?

Mylpaal-verjaarsdag of te nie, sekerlik is êrens in my toekoms nog baie munte.

Stop helping beggars ‘kill themselves’ We all know that times have changed and life moves on ...

In Bellville we have beggars at every traffic light.

I want to point out a few things that you need to know.

Most of these people are drug users. A tell-tale sign is their swollen hands. They pump their bodies full of chemicals that their organs cannot handle. As the kidneys start shutting down, hands and feet start to swell.

Some of the drugs break down the “glue” that holds the flesh together. These users have sores and bandages. Look out for these signs. Your money that you give to these people, helps them to kill themselves.

These people are not looking for help, they want a hand-out. If they wanted help, the board would read; “Help me get off the street.

I need a job, clothes and somewhere to sleep.”

Unfortunately, most of them cannot get a job. They need money every day to support their drug habits, and some of them are spending R1 000 a day on some very harsh drugs. Your hand-out is helping them to stay there. Don’t give. You are killing them, not helping them. Ask the police how many of these drug user beggars are found dead in fields, parks, parking lots and ditches, in Bellville!

You will also find that a lot of them will graciously take the food you give them, then, when you pass there again, the food you gave has been discarded. When they are on these harsh drugs, they can’t keep food down anyway.

They vomit a lot as their bodies try to get the chemicals out. Giving food is

better, but that’s not what they want. They want your money to buy drugs.

Stop helping these people to kill themselves! Stop giving them money at the traffic lights.

Keep your money in your pocket or give to rehab programmes and night shelters. You will be doing a lot more good.

Please take this to heart.

Die diens by die Bellvillekliniek het nét so agteruitgegaan.

Ons kry baie van ons pille nie en jy moet maar tevrede wees met wat jy wel kry. Die apteek blameer die verskaffers, maar dis nie waar (dat dit hul skuld is) nie.

Ons het nou ’n pragtige kliniek, want hulle het die kliniek gemoderniseer. As die diens ook net kan verbeter.

Dan het ons ook ’n “briljante” dokter. Kom pasiënte met ander versoeke as net die voorskrif vir kroniese medisyne gooi hy sy hande in die lug en vra: “En wat moet ek nou doen? Sê jy vir my wat moet ek doen?”

Sterkte aan almal wat afhanklik is van klinieke reg oor ons land.

SA word verniel sonder gewete Graag wil ek na aanleiding van Skaam Suid-Afrikaner se brief (“Toeriste wil nie meer SA besoek nie”, 29 Januarie) ook my mening lug.

Ons dogter was met ’n Duitser getroud en hulle het elke jaar met die kinders vir ons kom kuier.

Destyds het hulle reeds die taxi’s se onverskillige bestuursvermoë bevraagteken.

Hulle was verstom dat babas en kinders nie in stoeltjies vasgegordel is nie.

Hulle kon nie verstaan waarom voertuie nie binne die spoedgrens bly nie en waarom mense deur geel verkeersligte ry.

Sy is ongelukkig ses jaar gelede in Duitsland oorlede, dus sien ons die kleinkinders nie meer so gereeld nie. Ons Duitse skoonseun was egter reeds twee keer hier met die kinders en ons gesels al die tyd.

Toe hy twee jaar gelede hier was, moes ons vir hom ’n voertuig reël met twee stoeltjies en die kinders was toe al onderskeidelik ses en nege jaar oud!

Hulle wil nou weer kom kuier maar hy is bekommerd oor die kinders se veiligheid.

Is dit regverdig dat ons die land moet verdedig terwyl ons vir ons eie veiligheid veg. Ek hoop en bid hy bring die kinders.

Ja, hoop en bid en vertrou is al wat ons kan doen.

Ons hoop bly in God en vertrou dat Hy mense keuses sal laat maak wat hierdie land vir almal veilig sal maak.

Ons land is pragtig maar word daagliks verniel en vernietig deur mense sonder gewete, gevoelens en integriteit.

Word wakker Suid-Afrikaners, en sien wat julle doen.

rtscape will launch its annual education and training programme that seeks to provide better access to the arts on Tuesday 11 February at 11:00. The programme launch will be followed by the first quarterly free Lunch Hour Concert of 2020, featuring Cape Town Opera and the Unmute Dance Company.

The diverse year-long arts education programme, in collaboration with the City of Cape Town and the provincial government, amongst others, attempts to address some of the socio-economic challenges facing today’s youth, such as distance, transport, lack of funds and disability. The aim is to develop the next generation of arts and performance practitioners.

The programme wants to put the spotlight on that which is hidden or marginalised. Projects such as the Artscape Women and Humanity Festival, Youth Jazz, the isiXhosa set work production, Buzani ku Bawo, the ArtsAbility Festival and the celebration of national holidays speaks to this transformation mandate.

Artscape CEO, Marlene le Roux, says, ‘‘By giving participants access to worldclass stages with professional lighting and production values, our programme inspires young people’s creative dreams, helps them to grow as performers and artists, and

drives employment”.

Le Roux says Artscape’s Schools Arts Festival will see learners from about 15 schools deliver a programme of choral music, theatre and contemporary dance, while the High School Drama Festival engenders latent creative talent.

Their mandate speaks to the promotion and involvement of township and rural communities in the centre’s arts activities and recruiting rural communities to become actively involved in theatre productions.

“This includes the annual rural outreach programme that “takes the theatre to the people”.

The Artscape Resource Centre and Technical Training Academy transforms education within the arts and is changing the perceptions and aspirations towards mainstreaming professionals into marketable brands and building sustainability with the arts and culture sector, says Le Roux.

These productions are the result of partnerships and collaborations with artists, producers and various stakeholders who assist with producing, while Artscape provides the venue and in-house technical infrastructure.

Talent gesoek vir liriek-mentorskap Die Jakes Gerwel-stigting en die Suidoosterfees bied vanjaar vir die eerste keer ’n mentorskap-program aan vir opkomende liriekskrywers en sangers wat oorspronklike liedjies in Afrikaans, Engels of Xhosa skep.

Dié program is ’n uitbreiding van die Suidoosterfees se bestaande Talentsoekkompetisie waarin na nuwe, ongeslypte talent in die Wes-Kaap – hetsy in drama, sang of dans – gesoek word.

Vir die mentorskap-program word gesoek na jong kunstenaars wat vars en opwindende lirieke skryf. Die vyf belowendste liriekskrywers sal deur ’n paneel van onafhanklike kenners in die eindronde aangewys word. Daarna sal intensiewe mentorskap oor ’n tydperk van drie weke in die stigting se Paulet-skrywershuis op Somerset-Oos aan die vyf kandidate gegee word.

Die halfeindronde sal op Saterdag 28 Maart in die Waterfront plaasvind, waarna die finaliste aangewys word en mekaar die stryd sal aansê by die Suidoosterfees op Saterdag 2 Mei in die Kunstekaap.

Frazer Barry, bekend as musikant, skrywer en voorsanger van Tribal Echo, sal as die mentor optree. Barry het die klankbaan geskep vir die gevierde teaterstuk Krotoa: Eva van die Kaap.

Opkomende kunstenaars sal nie net leiding ontvang in die skep en herskryf van hul lirieke nie; hulle kry ook die geleentheid om saam met Barry aan ’n produksie te werk, wat in 2021 by die Suidoosterfees sal debuteer.

Uiteenlopende aspekte van die vermaaklikheidsbedryf – onder meer hoe om ’n loopbaan te begin, ’n album op te neem, netwerke te verbreed en ’n nis in die mark te vind – sal tydens die verblyf toegelig word.

If you are renting, your lease will often allow an amount for tenant installation. This is an amount that the landlord is willing

to pay for alterations and is often calculated at an amount per square metre. Make sure that this will cover your alterations or that you have budgeted accordingly and can afford to make the alterations that are necessary.

Amenities Do not forget to look at more than just the walls when choosing an office space. Mott said natural and artificial lighting, air-conditioning and connectivity are all important too.

Cost No matter how many boxes an office space ticks, cost will always be an essential component, but Mott said businesses should never discount the potential to negotiate on rental.

Michaela is best overall karateka M

ichaela de Kock has been awarded the best overall karateka in the Overberg region for Francois du Plessis Goju-Kai Karate.

According to Du Plessis, Michaela embodies the concept of best overall karateka.

“Not only does she set an example in the dojo, she sets an example in life. Michaela started with Francois du Plessis Goju-Kai Karate at the age of 9 and has never looked back.

She has always strived to do her best and meets all challenges head on,” he states.

In 2019, Michaela graded to her Nidan (second black belt) and was commended on her exceptional grading. She also competed at the Goju-Kai National Championships, coming home with medals in all five divisions that she entered, three of those gold.

All this was accomplished while helping coach the Overberg Provincial team.

She is a Biokineticist in Paarl and dedicates herself to her clients.

“Michaela will always go the extra mile both in karate and in her work, she is always there to help her fellow karateka, both in how to improve their karate as well as mental and emotional support.

Francois du Plessis Goju-Kai would like to congratulate her on winning this award, and thank her for everything she has given back to the dojo.”

Big-engined V8s lead the charge at Killarney The entry list for the international Passion for Speed by G-Energy at Killarney International Raceway on Saturday 8 February features a number of big-engined V8 monsters from the golden era of sports-car racing in South Africa, as well as some of the fastest Sports and GT cars currently dominating the South African Endurance Series.

Topping the contenders for the headline race of the day, the 45 minute SA TT for Pre ‘66/68 Le Mans Sports and GT cars, are father and daughter Peter and Paige Lindenberg, sharing a Shelby Daytona Coupé, and brothers Mark and Jonathan du Toit from Pretoria, in a Lola T70 Spider and a Daytona respectively.

The thundering seven-litre Ford-powered Daytona was developed from the AC Cobra by Pete Brock specifically to win the World GT Championship, which it did in 1964 much to Enzo Ferrari’s annoyance, while the Spyder is the opentopped earlier version of what later became the iconic Lola T70 coupé, usually powered by a five-litre Chev V8.

Du Toit’s T70 is a replica of Doug Serrurier’s 1965 example, which he famously campaigned under the Wall’s Ice Cream banner. Keeping them honest will be Colin Ellison in a Chevron B19, Peter van der Spuy (1972 Porsche Carrera 911

Peter Lindenberg has entered a Ford Mustang, and his daughter Paige will be at the helm of a Ford Galaxie, as will Colin Ellison.

In the same event, the Little Giants category features the Lynx Porsche 944 of Geoff Bihl and a brace of iconic two-litre Alfas, the GTAM of Jared Thomson and the Giulia of Trevor Tuck. The cars themselves are the stars of the UK-based Historic Grand Prix Cars Association.

The Turfhall Softball Stadium was abuzz over the weekend with quite a bit of knockout action as well as a touring American college, which conducted coaching clinics, as well as play against a Cape Town Softball Association (CTSA) invitational team.

Table View Tornados ensured that they will contest their women’s Major League final against Westridge Yankees after they beat northern suburbs rivals Belhar Dolphins 6-3 on Sunday 2 February.

In the day’s featured game on the A-diamond, Yankees’ men’s team beat Khayelitsha Eagles 11-7 in an exciting semi-final.

Eagles took seven hits off veteran pitcher Wendall Solomons who struck out seven batters and gave up six free bases.

Yankees out-hit their much-fancied opponents taking 11 hits off Moses Molaba.

Solomons also led the offensive for Yankees with a superb 3-4 batting performance, including a double and a triple.

Yankees will meet their old foes, Hamiltons, who defeated a young Tantasport 14-8, in the finals in March.

US college tour The week-long visit by the Gustavus Adolphus College from Minnesota in the United States of America was a hit with officials and players.

The morning clinic, conducted by the visitors, was well attended by young players from local clubs and schools.

Later in the afternoon, the college team showed their on-the-field prowess in their first of three matches against a CTSA representative team.

The CTSA team came out tops 3-2.

he Twizza Super School Series produced a riveting display of school’s track and field competition at the Bestmed Tuks Athletics Stadium on Saturday 1 February.

But while Afrikaanse Hoër Seunskool, Menlo Park High School girls and mixed team claiming the coveted title of SA’s best athletics school (in their respective categories), teams from local schools such as Bellville, D.F. Malan, Milnerton and Parow finished well

The South African Golf Association (Saga) selected GolfRSA National Squad members Casey Jarvis, Sam Simpson, Jordan Duminy and Christiaan Maas to represent South Africa in the All-Africa Junior Golf Teams Championship in March.

Affectionately dubbed the “North vs South” battle, the Twiz-

za Super School Series Grand Finale saw 46 of SA’s leading athletics schools (1 125 athletes) participate on the day. Qualifying schools were required to enter 15 member teams (boys, girls and/or mixed) across two age groups u.17 and u.19. Events that could be entered included: 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 1 500m, short hurdles, long hurdles, long jump, triple jump, high jump, shot-put, discus and javelin for age groups u.17 and u.19.

“We are excited that we started

the season with a bang,” said ASA President, Aleck Skhosana.

“Even more thrilling is that we are affording future stars a chance to experience top level competition while they are still at school. With the SABC now on board as the official host broadcaster, the future is brighter. The success of these series encourages us to now look at populating it to other areas beyond the Gauteng and Cape Town legs to give it more access to other students as well across the country.

Simpson gets national nod The event serves as the African Qualifier for the Toyota Junior Golf World Cup in Japan.

Simpson, who plays out of Bellville Golf Club was also part of the the victorious GolfRSA Junior Team that won the African Qualifier and went on to win the Toyota Junior Golf World Cup last year.

ster and Christo Lamprecht, ended an 18-year winning drought for South Africa and became the first boys team in the 27-year history of the event to break the 40under-par barrier when they captured the title with a tournament record 41-under-par total.

“Casey and Sam represented South Africa with great honour

on the international stage last year and we are delighted to have them spearhead our title defence in Egypt. We are also very excited to give Jordan and Christiaan another opportunity to represent the country and gain experience on the international stage,” said Saga president Naadir Agherdien.

Tygerberg te sterk vir HTS SAREL BURGER

Die hoërskole Bellville, D.F. Malan, Tygerberg en Monumentpark se eerste krieketspanne was aan die wenkant in die jongste reeks o.19A-wedstryde in die Peter Buttnersportliga vir skole in die Tygerbergstreek.

Helgard Rautenbach (80) het die leeueaandeel gehad in D.F. Malan (204/6) se sege oor Brackenfell (127), terwyl Ruban Meijering (56*) mooi op stryk was in HS Bellville (85/3) se maklike oorwinning oor De Kuilen (81).

HS Tygerberg (146) was te sterk vir HTS Bellville (98), terwyl Monumentpark (48/1) sommer vroegdag al afgereken het met HS Parow (47). Darren van Zyl (8/18) het die Parow-kolwers lelik laat bontstaan.

In die Francor Bakkery-liga vir o.19Bspanne was die glanspunt gewis die kolfwerk van Juan Coetzee (194), wat D.F. Malan (330) in staat gestel het om Brackenfell (88) behoorlik die kous oor die kop te trek.

In die AllSports Travel-liga vir o.15Aspanne was aan die wenkant Brackenfell (t D.F. Malan), Curro Durbanville (t Fairbairn) en HS Bellville (t De Kuilen).

Die beste individuele vertoning was dié van Sean Dednam (Curro Durbanville), wat 5/6 teen Fairbairn ingeoes het.

Ewe indrukwekkend was die boulwerk van Vaughan Visagie (5/4), wat Curro Durbanville in staat gestel het om in die L & L Buttner-liga vir o.14A-spanne maklik met HS Bellville klaar te speel. D.F. Malan het op sy beurt vir Brackenfell geklop. . D.F. Malan en Curro Durbanville se o.19A-spanne het hul aangesluit by Stellenberg, Brackenfell en HS Tygerberg in die kwarteindronde van die Sammy Bloch/Medicare Apteke-uitklopkompetisie. D.F. Malan was gans te sterk vir Parow en Curro het min teenstand van HTS Bellville ontvang.

Die oorblywende wedstryde in ronde een is: HS Bellville t Belhar, De Kuilen t Edgemead, Fairbairn t Durbanville.
