peaking at a public meeting of the Bothasig Neighbourhood Watch last week Helen Carstens, council 3 chairperson and councillor for Bothasig, Goodwood Prison and Edgemead, touched on traffic enforcement happening in the area. She said she got the impression that many people think such enforcement does not happen, but 131 fines to a total value of R68 200 were issued in July.

Cartsens said she had held a few meetings with traffic officials and that they are going to move away from fines at the moment and will be testing out the legal justice system. “So if you don’t stop at a stop street they’re going to arrest you; if you are caught speeding they are going

to arrest you.” This, she said, will hopefully drive the message home. “I’ve always said it would be better if, when we get issued with a fine, we get issued with community service, because what is more humiliating than putting on an orange overall and going to pick up litter in De Grendel Avenue or Bosmansdam Road? It’s sure going to make me stop at every stop street. It has actually become too easy for people to pay a fine and then just carry on doing what they are doing,” said Carstens.

Handover of hope: The Thutuzela Care Centre at Karl Bremer Hospital received their share of the donation of Bags of Hope on Monday 11

The donation constituted 30 bags full of necessities, which will be used by the women and children in trauma who pass through their doors daily, often with little more than the clothes on their backs. The motion requests the City of Cape Town’s Transport Authority (TCT) to consider the implementation of poles to be installed at the intersection to the Engen garage on Edgemead Drive in order to assist in curbing unlawful U-turning during peak hour traffic.

According to the motion this should allow traffic to flow a bit better without a string of vehicles attempting to enter the lane.

The traffic flowing over from Vryburger Avenue will not be able to U-turn and motorists will experience less road rage.

Carstens said various suggestions have been brought to the table and she believes they might find a solution soon.

The month to focus on muscular dystrophy September is Muscular Dystrophy Awareness Month. Muscular dystrophy refers to a group of more than 70 different neuromuscular disorders causing progressive wasting and weakness of the muscles.

Each type presents differently and with its own levels of complexity. It is characterised primarily by progressive muscle weakness, leading to secondary effects such as fatigue, increasingly limited physical activity, impaired balance and often collapsing.

The prognosis varies according to the type of dystrophy and the speed of progression.

Frightening truth about drinking in pregnancy

S

aturday 9 September marked International Foetal Alcohol Syndrome Awareness Day to raise awareness of the fact that pregnant women should abstain from drinking alcohol. Willem Stassen, critical care paramedic at ER24, explains foetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) as the leading preventable cause of mental retardation.

“It is a clinical syndrome that occurs when the unborn baby is exposed to alcohol through maternal alcohol consumption. This syndrome is characterised by distinct facial abnormalities and other defects in the heart, muscles, kidneys and eyes. One study reports that the incidence of FAS in some South African populations may be as high as 12.2%.

“Unfortunately, the damage done in FAS is permanent and cannot be undone,” he says.

The South African National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (SANCA) says that FAS is 100% preventable. The mother and baby are connected by the placenta and the umbilical cord. This means that the baby takes in almost everything that the mother consumes. Substances can build up in the baby’s system and can cause permanent damage.

Stassen says that there is no safe level or period of alcohol intake during pregnancy, as this is affected by the alcohol clearance rates, foetal sensitivity to alcohol, drinking patterns of the mother-to-be, as well as genetics. “For this reason, all international guidelines recommend that pregnant women completely abstain from all alcoholic beverages during the entire duration of pregnancy. Pregnant women should always attend prenatal checkups at a registered healthcare provider,” he says.

SANCA states that there are at least 500 000 South Africans suffering from FAS. South Africa, with an incidence of 8-12%, has the highest rate of FAS globally.

Being the eyes and ears of Bothasig CARINA ROUX

t a public meeting of the Bothasig Neighbourhood Watch (NHW) held last Wednesday evening, Warrant Officer Luan Stears from the local police reminded all NHW members to get themselves vetted.

Stears said that only 59 of the 189 members have been vetted thus far. With the cutoff date being 13 September he expressed his concern that the authorities could say, “if you’re not vetted you are not part of the NHW anymore”. He requested all to bring the application form and their ID document to the police station where fingerprints will be taken. These will be sent to the criminal record service in Bellville or Cape Town to be vetted. “This is the process that will have to be followed from now on,’’ said Stears. He stressed the importance of the way in which the NHW helps the police with visibility and the role this plays in crime prevention.

Although the date for submissions might be extended, Stears urged people to rather not rely on this. Peter Smallman, NHW chairperson, encouraged all to get vetted and said it only took him about three minutes to get his fingerprints taken and to submit the documentation.

At the start of the meeting Smallman mentioned that the NHW had covered 25 535 km during the 1281 patrols they had done in the past three months. This, he said, shows the dedication to the neighbourhood as it is done “out of (members’) own pockets”. He urged all to consider joining the NHW and mentioned there’s a job for everyone, as there are different aspects involved.

“Everyone can be the eyes and ears.”

don’t realise their value. “Once a street decides it wants to join us as a street watch, we set you up with a WhatsApp group for that specific street.”

If anything untoward happens or if there’s anything suspicious, everyone can be made aware. This, he says, definitely pays off and if anything does happen it can be relayed to the active patrol group to be on the lookout.

Guest speaker Gideon van der Mescht, a compliance officer at a cash services company, spoke about “banking risks”. His advice regarding ATM safety was “what everyone should know but tends to forget – pay attention; always be aware of your surroundings and where you park; choose ‘your’ ATM you want to go to; cover your PIN.” He said some of the main risks they deal with in the financial sector are cash-intransit (CIT) heists, ATM grindings or bombings, and vandalising or bombing of business safes. These crimes normally occur between 08:00 and 11:00 and between 18:00 and 20:00.

These types of cash-related crimes have increased by 112% in the Western Cape since the end of last year, said Van der Mescht. In 36 of these incidents CIT vehicles were involved. Other crimes against businesses, like cellphone store robberies, mainly occur in the morning, he said.

There has also been an increase of incidents at Sassa paypoints. Smallman encouraged the NHW members to make themselves visible at the Shoprite centre and other Sassa points on the first of every month.

Helen Carstens, ward councillor, said the City realises the value of NHWs. “We (the City) are going to do lots to capacitate you in the months to come,” she said.

Met die hulp van die buurtwaglid is die voertuig gevolg tot naby die N7, waar dit toe deur die polisie voorgekeer is. Elektroniese en huishoudelike items is in die voertuig gevind.

Mostert sê hulle het die adres opgevolg waar die voertuig aanvanklik opgemerk is en het agtergekom die huis is beroof.

Die 28-jarige beskuldigde van Philippi het skuldig gepleit op ’n aanklag van huisbraak. Hy is tot tronkstraf van 12 maande gevonnis sonder die keuse van ’n boete.

In nog ’n geval is ’n 20-jarige man van Bothasig skuldig bevind nadat hy ’n beskermingsbevel weens huishoudelike geweld verontagsaam het. Die man was saam met die aansoeker van die beskermingsbevel in ’n voertuig toe hy op haar begin vloek en skree het – aksies wat deur die beskermingsbevel verbied is.

Die vrou het ’n verklaring afgelê waarna die man in hegtenis geneem is. Hy is gevonnis tot ’n boete van R2 000 of 50 dae tronkstraf, opgeskort vir drie jaar.

Nog ’n Bothasig-inwoner (28) het ook die hand van die gereg gevoel nadat hy skuldig bevind is aan aanranding. Hy het na bewering ’n vrou met ’n gholfstok teen die kop geslaan. Die man het onskuldig gepleit in die hof, maar is uiteindelik skuldig bevind en gevonnis tot ’n R3 000-boete of 3 maande tronkstraf.

Life is always worth living An event to mark World Suicide Prevention Day on Saturday 10 September was held in Bellville to raise awareness and start a conversation around mental illness and suicide.

Funds were raised to provide better training and resources to volunteers at suicide prevention hotlines and crisis centres.

Victoria Norman, one of the organisers, says the aim was to offer activities that would be beneficial to those with mental illness, to act as a reminder that life is worth living, and to offer healthy pastimes. HangTime Indoor Climbing in Pioneer Street offered free entry and rock climbing.

Other activities on offer ranged from clay play and dance to yoga sessions and a karate class. A fundraiser was hosted next door at Ellington’s Saloon with several bands performing.

The day ended with a remembrance ceremony to remember those who had lost their battle.

earners at Wingfield Primary School in Kensington are being inspired to read with new books and colourful reading corners, to aid in their journey of discovery.

The reading corners, installed in the 11 foundation phase classrooms, as well as brand new books donated by GrandWest Corporate Social Investment, were handed over to the school on Friday 8 September to mark International Literacy Day. Learners dressed as their favourite book characters for the occasion and each received a book of their own to take home.

Reading exercises the brain, improves concentration, teaches children about the world around them, improves language and vocabulary skills and builds imagination.

Children who read have also been shown to perform better at school.

Mervyn Naidoo, general manager at GrandWest, says GrandWest strives to support projects and interventions that have the potential to improve the lives of people living in the communities in which it operates. “As Wingfield Primary is right on our doorstep, we are delighted to contribute towards giving its young learners the tools to get reading. With access to reading corners and new books, we hope to inspire them to read more so as to broaden their world,” says Naidoo.

André skuur skouers met Hollywood­grotes AVRIL FILLIES

ie almal kan spog dat hulle in flieks saam met internasionale akteurs soos Sidney Poitier, Clint Eastwood, Michael Caine of Samuel L. Jackson opgetree het nie.

Die plaaslike akteur André Jacobs van Parow spog met dié prestasie – en hy is nie bietjie trots daarop nie!

“Ek het in 1977 ’n akteur geword nadat ek vier jaar in Londen gestudeer het. In Julie 1977 het ek huis toe gekom en by die destydse Kaapse Raad vir Uitvoerende Kunste (Kruik) as die spook in Hamlet opgetree.

“My tweede werk was in Johannesburg toe ek Owl in Winnie the Pooh gespeel het.

“Daarna het ek drie jaar vir die Transvaalse Raad van Uitvoerende Kunste (Truk) in die Engelse geselskap (ons was net drie) gewerk. Die jaar 1980 was ook die laaste jaar wat ek ’n salaris verdien het. Van toe af tot nou werk ek as vryskut – queller horreur! Beslis nie vir sissies nie,” lag hy.

Sy eerste televisierol was as Malcolm in SABC se Macbeth en sy groot deurbraak het in 1981 gekom toe hy in 10 episodes van die TV-reeks Brood vir my broer te sien was.

“In daai dae was daar net een kanaal en almal het dit gekyk – dit was onmiddellik ’n groot hit en my lewe het verander! Vir die eerste paar jaar was dit aangenaam met baie erkenning en werk ... tog te lekker. Jy het handtekeninge uitgedeel en vir foto’s geposeer,” vertel hy.

“Die lekker ding van akteur wees, is dat jy (meestal) kan kies hoe om jou tyd te benut – rondom jou werk, of gebrek aan werk.

“Om te praat van die mense met wie ek al saamgewerk het, gaan ’n l-a-a-ang lys wees, so ek gaan maar skim. In my vroeë dae was dit die kraggroep wat vir Truk gewerk het – akteurs soos Louis van Niekerk, Carel Trichardt, Francois Swart en Wilna Snyman.

Ek onthou ek en Eric Nobbs en Chris van Niekerk het saam gespeel vir Truk. Daar was vele ander,” sê hy.

“Die werk wat ek meeste geniet is voor ’n kamera – dit kan of ’n televisie- of filmrol

wees. Ek het (volgens my) ontpop as ’n goeie filmakteur. Verhoogwerk was altyd my groot liefde, maar dis amper verby – amper.

“Verhoogwerk neem te veel van jou tyd in beslag en kan ’n baie duur luuksheid wees.

“My laaste twee verhoogstukke was Wie’s bang vir Virginia Woolf saam met Sandra Prinsloo tydens Aardklop in 2013, en toe Mamet se Race in Edinburgh in 2014.

“Wat in ons dramawêreld verander het, is die feit dat ons omtrent 20 jaar gelede die professionele tydperk betree het wat film en TV betref. Ons mense, crew en spelers, en al die ander fasette van die televisie- of rolprentbe-

d dryf is nou almal beroepsmense – selfs die ekstras – en daar is so 31 000 mense in die e Kaap alleen wat ’n bestaan hieruit maak.

“Ek het ook saam met ander internasionale akteurs soos Juliet Binoche, Michael Caine, Clint Eastwood, Claire Foy, Andrew Garfield, Andy Serkis, Janet Suzman, Toby Stevens, en vele ander opgetree. Ek wil nie eens praat oor al die wonderlike en talentvolle plaaslike spelers met wie ek ook skouers geskuur het nie! Ons het wêreldklas-spelers sommer hier op ons drumpel in die Kaap.

“Dis hoekom almal deesdae hul flieks in Kaapstad en omgewing kom skiet, want die regisseurs bespaar duisende rande met die dollar-rand-wisselskoers.”

K, Ray and The Bird

Ten years of folk rock fabness K, Ray and The Bird, a Cape Town-based folk rock band that has been performing since 2007, will be celebrating its 10th anniversary on Tuesday 19 September with a show at Die Boer. The band will be showcasing its past, present and future original music as a group.

This local group, originally from Goodwood, consists mainly of teachers residing in the Table View area (with one musical therapist). Raè Swart, Karyn Stuart, Gareth Asch, Emil Terhoven and Mark Cloete have promised an evening full of fun, musicality, soulful harmonies and original music (with a cover or two thrown in.)

The band has released three albums – the first in April 2009, the second in May 2011 and the third in November 2014.

K, Ray and The Bird’s sound has many influences and layers of harmony. On top of the foundation of drums, guitar and bass, the band adds keyboard, violin and saxophone (with even a clarinet making an appearance at times), all of which add to the melodic tapestry of sound.

There are three lead singers, each with their own sound and style, but who come together in intricate harmony. Due to the variety of styles, it is difficult to compare the band to others. Comparisons range from The Beatles, Crosby Stills Nash and Young, 10CC and Crowded House to Jars of Clay and The Dave Matthews Band. In addition to the distinct folk rock sound on the latest album, the band also explores elements of alternative rock and jazz.

Benefit concert for Liam Burden:

The Hugo Lambrechts Music Centre in Parow is organising a benefit concert in their auditorium on Sunday 17 September at 16:30. All proceeds from the concert will aid in paying the expenses incurred following the accident of the centre’s Liam Burden (head of department: woodwinds) in February this year.

Orchestras performing at the concert include the DF Malan High School Wind Band, the Cape Town Philharmonic Music Academy, the Cape Town Philharmonic Youth Wind Ensemble, the West Coast Youth Orchestra, the Hugo Lambrechts Senior and Junior Wind Bands and the Hugo Lambrechts Symphony Orchestra.

Open mic jazz competition heating up

he highly contested 2017 GrandWest Open Mic Jazz Singing Competition is heating up, with the announcement of the 24 jazz performers who are going through to the quarter finals. The performers are competing in two quarter-final rounds at Jackson Hall – the first was on Wednesday 6 September and the second will be tonight (13 September).

The 24 quarter finalists are Anathi Mobo, Caitlin Farmer, Clyde Hanekom, Courtneigh Davids, Gugu Duma, Ian Daniels, James Henry, Kirsten Williams, Kyle Petersen, Lauren Hendricks, Libo Ndwayana, Liso Gewabe, Marvin Boer, Naledi Masilo, Natalie Russell, Ncedeka Bophe, Odwa Bongo, Penelope Radsma, Peter John Titus, Sisanda, Myataza, Ursula Jacobus, Vess, Vicky Rose and Zolani Bongo.

A full house is expected for the quarter-final event as the top 24 entrants compete for a place in the final stages. The community is urged to be at Jackson Hall to cheer them on.

They will perform on stage before a live audience, accompanied by a band. The judges will be focusing on vocal technique, song interpretation, stage presence and audience response. The show will commence at 20:00 and there is no entry fee.

Only 12 will be selected to go through to the semi-finals, which will take place at SunExhibits, GrandWest, on Monday 18 September. The final six will battle it out for the title of OMJ Winner 2017 at SunExhibits, GrandWest, on 20 September.

WAT DIE HART VAN VOL IS

Die gesig van ’n alkoholis wat bly spook

Ek het vandeesweek in die gesig van alkoholisme gekyk. ’n Gesonde, hardwerkende, sogenaamd “ordentlike” man, maar vasgevang in die greep van drank.

Hier is dié geloof onder ouskoolmense dat jy nié ’n alkoholis is as jy nog ’n werk of vrou of huis het nie.

Min besef en verstaan dat jy kan funksioneer en steeds ’n positiewe rol in die samelewing vertolk terwyl jy hopeloos etanol-afhanklik is.

Só ook hierdie gerespekteerde man voor my, wat nie besef dat hy eintlik al klassifiseerbaar is nie.

Hoewel ek geen dokter is nie, is iemand wat élke dag van die week drink – hetsy ’n “slaapdop”, om “af te koel”, ’n sogenaamde “sundowner”, en, en, en ... – myns insiens al klaar so diep in die bottel dat omdraaikans maar gering is.

Die oomblik as jy ook nie meer nee dankie kan sê vir ’n glasie ietsie nie, het jy al klaar probleme, meen Lekedokter Ekke ook.

Daar is min “Ek wens ek kon soos jy wees en net lagplooitjies, nee dankie sê vir vertel hy en die hare is drank,” my.

Sy pa is dood toe hy vier jaar oud is.

Sy oudste broer is doodgesteek toe hy 15 was – dié broer was ook die broodwinner.

Sy ma het agt kinders alleen grootgemaak op pap, en pap, en ... pap (sonder suiker, daarom drink hy vandag nog ses lepels suiker in sy koffie, want hy kán).

Hoe ánders sou sy lewe uitgedraai het as die dobbelsteentjie anders geval het? wonder ek. En wat is nou eintlik die verskil tussen sý swaarkry en enigiemand anders s’n?

“Ek wens ek kon ophou drink,” sug hy.

Dan skink hy vir hom nog ’n whisky.

Richwood rife with problems Referring to the article ‘Richwood no good’ (TygerBurger, 26/07): I would like to commend Glen Marais, his team of neighbourhood watch members, the Richwood ratepayers and the good people of Richwood who tirelessly work to make a difference in our forgotten suburb. I would so much like to join these people in what they do; however; watching how they struggle for support from the ward councillor and the City really does not make it worth the aggravation.

I have lived in this area for many years. Councillors come, make promises before elections and then they go, never to be seen again. Many ratepayers’ association members come, get frustrated and go. I commend past members for their efforts.

The biggest priority in our suburb is community safety, yet the council sees the need to spend money on building and refurbishing (not completing the work on) parks in the area. These parks cannot be used when robberies, assaults and stabbings occur.

Service delivery is at an all-time low in our area.

Street sweeping and litter collection are non-existent.

Roads are in a really bad state. Street signs are broken. Illegal dumping is rife. Storm water systems are blocked. I personally have lodged C3 service requests, which are either ignored or marked as complete with the job not done. It would be interesting to know if one ever gets a response from the councillor or the City of Cape Town.

This ongoing saga needs to reach a concussion.

ICE number on cellphone essential On the afternoon of Friday 11 September I received a call from my mother’s cellphone.

The call was from Natalie Christian of Pick n Pay Plattekloof, who informed me that my mother had collapsed in the shop and that they were attending to her. Fortunately I was in the area and rushed to the store where Esti Basson from Pick n Pay pharmacy had made her comfortable and had taken her blood pressure. My mother was unaware of what was happening and was unable to communicate.

I rushed her to Panorama Mediclinic where she spent six days, culminating in a cardiac procedure. During this time Esti called the hospital and also visited my mother on a couple of occasions.

We are very grateful to Natalie and Esti for their assistance and compassion.

This event highlights the importance of saving the contact details of a family member or friend under ICE (In Case of Emergency) on your cellphone. Natalie found ICE on my mother’s phone and was able to immediately inform me of the situation.

Hierdie aspek is onlangs by die Kommetjie-belastingbetalersvereniging bespreek deur die wêreldbekende hidroloog, dr. Ricky Murray.

Hy het onder meer gemeld dat dit noodsaaklik is om reënwater terug te ploeg in die grond om ons grondwatervlakke optimaal te bestuur, te monitor en dat grootskaalse grondwaterekstraksie-en-terugplasing ’n vyfde kos van dit wat ontsoutingsaanlegte kos.

Hy stel ook voor dat mense wat nie hul reënwater in tenks opvang nie, dit na hul tuine herlei om die grondwater ekologies optimaal te beheer, eerder as wat dit in die see wegvloei weens te veel harde en geplaveide oppervlaktes. As ons ’n petisie na die burgemeester kan stuur om hulle aan te spoor om hierdie toepassings onmiddelik ’n bywet te maak vir alle huisbewoners, sal dit geweldig bydra om ons stad in die toekoms deur hierdie droogteverknorsing te help.

Ek het self reeds ’n brief aan die burgemeester en stadswaterbeamptes gestuur.

Met verwysing na die berig (“Richwood no good”, 26/7) stem ons saam met Glenn Marais. Die raadslid Cheryl Visser se mond was baie groot met haar verkiesingsbeloftes. Toe sy ingekom het, was haar eerste woorde in die koerant: “Die eerste ding wat ek gaan doen, is om slaggate op ’n daaglikse basis ordentlik te herstel.”

Dis nou hospitaal om aan te beveel Ná my knievervanging het ek besluit om na die Cape View-hospitaal te gaan vir ’n herstelperiode van 10 dae.

Ek was baie beïndruk met die skoon plek. Al die personeel – van die sekerheidswag tot by die skoonmakers – was simpatiek en altyd behulpsaam. Die kombuispersoneel was uitstekend met hul smaaklike kos. Die verpleegpersoneel was professioneel en behulpsaam. Die fisioterapeut, Shamaaze, en die arbeidsterapeut, Melanie, was behulpsaam en simpatiek. Ek sal dié hospitaal aanbeveel.

apetonians turned out in their finest garb again for this year’s grand Iris House Children’s Hospice ball, aptly tthemed the Grand Crystal Gala Ball, held at tthe five-star Table Bay Hotel.

Among the esteemed guests were Gavin Smith representing the main sponsor of the S ball, deVere Acuma, Mr and Miss South Afb rrica, Habib Noorbhai and Demi-Leigh Nel Peters, as well as provincial agriculture, P economic development and tourism minise tter, Alan Winde. The evening included fun ttombola specials, a sponsored auction and a llively band that got guests tapping their feet.

The home, which offers respite to the families of children with special needs across the province completely free of charge, will have their next function, a Mad Hatter’s High Tea,

on Saturday 30 September.

The home will supply a full selection of high-tea goodies to choose from on the day.

There will also be live music from pianist Barbara Kleinpenning and a lively art auction with modern and classic pieces for all tastes. Visitors can bring their creative flair to decorate their own table and there will be a prize awaiting the winner. Also expect a tombola auction, and at just R150 per head or R1000 for a table of eight, the proceeds will benefit the numerous worthy projects of the home. There are also tables of six available.

Conference to go the distance T

he Association of International Marathons and Distance Races (AIMS) will hold its first South African conference tomorrow and Friday, during the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon week.

Key stakeholders from around the world will participate in the conference, which will give African and South African roadrace organisers, local governments, municipalities and federations the opportunity to listen to and learn from experts in the field of road races and trail events. Creating economic appeal, sports tourism, events marketing and adherence to international standards will all be addressed by leaders in the field.

AIMS is a member-based organisation of more than 400 of the world’s leading distance races in over 100 countries and territories.

It endeavours to cultivate and promote distance running throughout the world, and works with the International Association of Athletic Federation (IAAF) on all topics relating to international road races, while also sharing knowledge and expertise within the association. Local conference delegates will be able to engage and network with organisations from around the world while sharing in the latest findings from the organisers of the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon, Africa’s first IAAF Gold Label marathon.

Janet Welham, race director of the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon, says: “There are many criteria to having a successful race, and this conference will cover key aspects of putting together a spectacular event, and showcase Africa as the top destination in which to compete.”

AIMS president Paco Borao will open the conference and will be joined by Aleck Skhosana, Athletics South Africa (ASA) president, Alessio Punzi, IAAF road-running manager, Anroux Marais, Western Cape Government minister of cultural affairs and sport, Dr Laurine Platzky, Western Cape Government deputy director, and many other highly esteemed presenters.

The conference will provide delegates with the opportunity to witness first-hand how the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon has become an iconic city marathon by enabling them to be a part of all planned activities over the course of the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon week and weekend.

ith little wind and few hills, the 2017 West Coast Express was bound to come down to a bunch sprint, and that’s exactly what happened, with Evan Carstens (Team Giant) outsprinting the field to claim the victory in a time of 1:51:31 on Sunday. Teammate Bradley Gouveris finished second, with Shameeg Salie (Alfa Bodyworks) coming in third.

The race, held in idyllic conditions, was the first road race of the PPA Vida Spring League (a series of eight events including five road races, two criteriums, a hill climb and a time trial). So it was a bunch of hungry riders who lined up on the starting line, eager to get some points on the scoreboard.

There were a number of attacks along the

route, with a few riders getting dropped on the only real climb of the day towards Mamre, but the bunch predictably stayed together, culminating in an exciting bunch sprint, with Carstens emerging victorious. The win makes it a two-for-two victory for Team Giant as Bradley Gouveris had won the Bestmed Makro Cycle Tour the day before.

Dubbed the fastest, flattest race on the calendar, this year’s race certainly lived up to its name, with the front bunch averaging just short of 42km/h. “It was a great race.

We were meant to be riding for Bernard Esterhuizen, but things didn’t work out that way coming into the final straight, so he ended up leading me out for the win. We’ve had a great start to our season and look forward

to tackling the big Classics coming up,” says Carstens.

The second bunch on the road, which included the leading ladies, was unfortunately sent on the incorrect route, which meant they had to do their sprint for the win earlier than anticipated. Courteney Webb (UCT Cycling) crossed the line first, with Susan Melmed and Liezel Jordaan finishing in second and third places respectively.

From the elites to the first-timers, the 2017 West Coast Express, organised by the Outriders Cycle Club, presented cyclists with a great challenge on a perfect Cape Town day.
