‘Boks’ deliver food parcels

Kraaifontein residents were surprised when Springbok players handed out food parcels to them as part of Be The Difference Foundation’s nutritional programme. Damian Willemse, Branco du Preez, Cheslin Kolbe and Justin Geduld were just some of the players who joined the foundation since the initiative started running daily seven weeks ago. The nutritional programme is one of the foundation’s programmes that run weekly, but now runs daily to bring relief to residents during the nationwide lockdown. The foundation hands out about 236 food parcels weekly in Bloekombos and Wallacedene among other locations. Here, Stormers player Scarra Ntubeni hands out food to a Kraaifontein resident.

ONLINE LEARNING: LEARNERS HAVE MIXED EMOTIONS

Efforts ‘not sufficient’ THABANG KUAHO @thab_journo

T

o ensure that learners continue getting education while schools remain closed during the lockdown, the basic education department has made the call for learning to be done through online platforms. Chulumanco Mbulawa, a Grade 9 learner, says it was thoughtful of the department to make sure that learners continue learning during the lockdown, but they are met with challenges. “It is very expensive to learn online and the efforts that some schools have made for learners to continue learning is not sufficient,” she says. “Some schools have provided data to their

learners but it is not enough. Half a gigabyte will only last a day while studying online.” Mbulawa also says she finds it difficult to learn online without the supervision of a teacher. “You cannot ask a question when learning online, I prefer being in the classroom in front of a teacher.” She hopes citizens can continue adhering to lockdown regulations so that learners can go back to school sooner. “It is important that everyone does their part so that everything can go back to normal.” Another learner Reuben Vinger says he enjoys learning online as there is no difficulty. “I like the fact that I can do my schoolwork in the comfort of my own home at my

own time,” he says. “I actually get a lot done at home, more than at school where there are a lot of distractions like learners that are not serious about their schoolwork.” Vinger hopes that online learning becomes permanent in the country. To make it easier for learners to continue learning without having to worry about data costs, Northpine Primary School posts worksheets on their Facebook page so that learners can easily access them. “This makes it easier for parents to access the material, print them out and give to their children to complete without having to use too much data,” principal Jeffrey King says. He says the completed worksheets can be delivered to the school at a date which will

be decided upon based on lockdown levels. King understands that many parents cannot afford to print the worksheets. “I really wish we could make the school available to have the worksheets printed but this is beyond our control, the school is off limits and we cannot open it up.” He says the feedback they have received on this has been positive. King urges parents to let the school know when they change their contact details. “When we contacted parents to let them know about this, we found that a number of them have changed their contact details without letting the school know.” He also urged parents to let each other know when worksheets are posted on the page weekly.
