Diving for a new record C

ape Town dive enthusiast JP Campher from Brackenfell is all set to break the Guinness World Record’s Longest Open Water Scuba Dive record in cold water for South Africa.

He aims is to create awareness about the plight of our oceans and raise R480 000 in crowdfunding for conservation efforts ahead of his dive attempt on the weekend of 9 to 11 August.

“Yes, as an enthusiastic scuba diver, a part of me is strangely excited by this challenge of remaining underwater for 48 hours, but what I’m really hoping to achieve with this attempt, is create more awareness about why and how we can take better care of our oceans and environment so that my kids and the generations to come can enjoy it,” says the dad of two.

“The challenge is vast but great things can be done by combining a series of small actions. If the masses, rather than the minority, were taking a step towards sustainable living – like reducing our plastic consumption by refusing plastic bags and plastic straws, creating eco-bricks from our non-recyclable waste or eating only SASSI green-listed fish species – collectively we could make great improvements” adds Campher.

Elanza Joubert (20) from Brackenfell has spastic quadriplegia, a type of cerebral palsy which means she has difficulty in controlling movements in her arms and legs.

She has been involved with boccia since August 2014. Boccia is a ball game for those with cerebral palsy or related neurological conditions involving a wheelchair. It is played on a hard surface, and the goal is to throw the balls to land as close as possible

to a target ball, called the “jack.”

Elanza represented Western Province at the South Africa Sport Association for the Physically Disabled (SASAPD) National Championships since 2015 in individual and team events where she won medals every year.

Reinet Barnard, WPSAPD boccia convener and coach, said in her nomination, Elanza has overcome a lot of physical barriers in her life, including extensive spinal surgery in 2015. “She is always positive and hard working. After her surgery, she still participated at the 2016 national championships where she won a gold medal.” Elanza helps with boccia coaching at her alma mater, Paarl School. Crime in Kraaifontein has remained relatively stable with only a small increase in property related incidents in certain areas.

However, police have advised residents to remain cautious and to report any suspicious-looking individuals and vehicles.

According to Captain Hein Hendricks, spokesperson of the Kraaifontein police, there has been an increase in house break-ins and theft out of motor vehicle.

Hendricks says these crimes have been recorded in the Bonnie Brae, Bonny Brook and Langeberg Ridge areas.

Residents are advised to be on the lookout for any suspicious people and vehicles loitering in the area.

“Increases in crime have also been noted in areas where building projects and developments are taking place,” says Hendricks. He adds there are no seasonal differences in crime trends.

According to Hendricks, the removal (not breaking) of windows in the Langeberg Ridge area is becoming more common.

He gave the following general safety tips to stay safe and to avoid becoming a victim of crime: . report any suspicious behaviour and vehicles loitering in the area; . steps should be taken to deter criminals from targeting premises (burglar bars, alarm system, fencing); . remove valuables from vehicles even if the vehicles are left unattended for a short time.

Man arrested for drug possession Following a tip-off from the public, a 21-year-old man was arrested for the possession of drugs.

Kraaifontein police spokesperson Captain Hein Hendricks says officers of the police’s major offences reaction team were working alongside officers of the army as part of Operation Lockdown in Wallacedene on Thursday 25 July when they received information from the public that drugs were being sold at a house in Mduli Street.

“The officers followed up on the information and found 97 mandrax tablets and 35 sachets of tik hidden with a street value of almost R5 000.”

The man will appear in the Kuils River Magistrate’s Court once charged. Brigadier Gerda van Niekerk, the station commissioner, congratulated the officers and the army on the arrest and the community’s willingness to assist in the fight against crime.

“Active community participation is pivotal in our fight against crime,” said Van Niekerk.

The police is asking the community for assistance after two siblings were robbed in Kraaifontein on Wednesday 24 July on their way to school.

At about 07:10 a learner (10) and his 13-year-old sister were on their way to Aristea Primary School when they were approached by an armed man on the corner of Darwin and Selbourne Streets.

Captain Hein Hendricks, Kraaifontein police spokesperson, says the man robbed the 10-year-old at gunpoint of his 24-inch black and purple 21 speed Raleigh Mountain bike.

The man fled the scene on the boy’s bike.

Peacock says this has spread by word of mouth and the response from the residents has been great.

He says if 700 people can donate one item, they can feed many families.

Peacock says he came up with the name #NorthpineProject1Luv️ because he was thinking about Bob Marley’s song: “One love, let’s get together and feel alright.” He says one item is one love that can spread through the community.

Peacock encourages all residents to join in this initiative. “We can do so much more if we all help. Let’s make Northpine even better and its people even more blessed.”

There are currently two drop off points for the initiative, situated at Best Choice Meat Hyper and Saverite and hopefully there will be more in the future.

Schools receive voucher from Cashbuild Brackenfell and Kraaifontein schools will receive a Cashbuild building material voucher valued at R15 000 as part of the Cashbuild Art-at-Heart competition.

The building material vouchers totalling R120 000 will be handed out to Lawrencia Primary School, Ekuthuleni Primary School, Northpine Primary School, Wallacedene Primary School, Scottsville Primary School, Bastion Primary School, Brooklands Primary School and Imvumelwano Primary School.

The prize money received at the opening ceremony of the refurbished Cashbuild Brackenfell store on 25 July, will be used to improve their school facilities.

Lawrencia Primary School will use their voucher to upgrade facilities in the girls’ bathrooms and to improve the outside area.

“We are grateful to Cashbuild for this voucher because now we can carry out some much-needed maintenance. We need to upgrade the hand basins, toilets and tiling,” said Enid Peters, principal of Lawrencia

Primary School.

Peters said they would also like to install outside benches under the trees that learners can sit on during their lunch breaks.

Mary Mkhale, principal of Ekuthuleni Primary School, said they have a big painting project to do because all the outside walls and the inside of the school hall needs to be painted.

“If we can, we would also like to fit new toilets and paint and tile all the toilet facilities,” said Mkhale.

Northpine Primary School’s deputy principal, Beatrice Fredericks said they will be doing quite a few badly needed maintenance and repair jobs.

“Firstly, we need to tackle the boys’ and girls’ toilets where we will install new washbasins and paint and tile both areas.

“We also need to upgrade the kitchen,” she said.

Fredericks said the sports field is also in need of maintenance and he will be using part of the voucher towards that as well.

The Cashbuild Art-at-Heart competition requires learners to submit their best artwork to Cashbuild.

The artwork will be on display in the Cashbuild store for the next six years. It will be judged and three winners from each school will be chosen and will receive a certificate for first, second and third place respectively.

The Manager’s Choice Award will also be presented to the overall winner of the artwork competition and will be announced on the day. The winner will receive a stationery pack and a trophy and is also given the honour of officially opening the refurbished store.

Since the Art-at-Heart campaign was launched 18 years ago, Cashbuild has assisted more than 3 200 schools in Southern Africa with over R40-million worth of building materials.

Cashbuild not only makes donations to local schools but also creates jobs for community members.

l wat sy wou doen toe sy klein was, was om ander mense te laat lag.

Nou doen die komediant Mel Jones dit vir ’n lewe.

“Toe ek baie jonk was, het ek ’n fliek gaan kyk en toe ek uitstap, het ek só gelukkig gevoel. My siel was gelukkig. Ek kan nie eers meer die naam van die fliek onthou nie. Al wat ek onthou, is dat ek daardie dag geweet het dat ek dit wil doen as ek groot is – om mense gelukkig te maak,” sê sy.

Terwyl sy in die kleinhandelbedryf gewerk het, het haar ma haar vertel van komedie-slypskole wat in Woodstock aangebied word.

Mel was altyd van nature snaaks, maar het nooit gedink dat sy ’n loopbaan van dit sou kon maak nie.

“Ek het die slypskole bygewoon en die fasiliteerder het vir my gesê ek kan nie ‘net daar sit nie’. Die volgende klas het ek van my eie werk saamgevat en dit is baie goed ontvang. Die volgende week het hulle my naam op die lys gesit by ’n oopmikrofoonsessie. Ek was nog nooit vantevore ’n aanhanger van stand upkomedie nie, maar toe die gogga eers gebyt het, kon ek dit nie laat gaan nie,” sê sy.

Mel het in haar loopbaan van 10 jaar verskeie hoëprofiel-optredes gehad, insluitend by die Baxter-teater. Sy’t ook ’n paar toekennings ontvang vir haar werk. Danksy haar sukses as komediant het sy ook ’n suksesvolle radioloopbaan vir haarself uitgekerf.

“Toe ek die radiowese verlaat, het ek teruggegaan na my eerste liefde – komedie,” sê Mel.

Toe sy destyds begin optree het, was sy een van die min vroulike komediante in die land.

Volgens Mel het die feit dat sy meeste van die tyd die enigste vrou tussen ’n klomp mans was haar egter nie afgeskrik van ’n loopbaan in komedie nie.

Sy is trots is om ’n ambassadeur te wees vir vroulike komediante, omdat sy een van die eerstes was wat die bedryf betree het.

“Vroue dink nie aan komedie as ’n loopbaan nie en omdat daar nie baie vroue is wat dit doen nie, wil vroue dit nie probeer nie. Hoe meer vroue egter by komedie betrokke raak, hoe meer sal die weg gebaan word vir ander vroue,” sê sy.

“Mense dink komedie is maklik, maar dit is ’n wanopvatting. Die snaaksste ou rondom die braaivleisvuur beteken nie noodwendig hy gaan suksesvol wees op die verhoog nie.

“Jy moet klomp dinge op die verhoog probeer. Jy sal nooit weet of dit werk nie, tensy jy dit probeer. Dit is hárde werk en net met oefening sal jy beter raak. Dit vat lank om naam te maak.”

Mel is die gasvrou by TygerBurger se Fearlessly Female-vroue-oggend op Vrydag 9 Augustus. Sy beskou haarself as die “glittergom wat alles bymekaar hou” by so ’n geleentheid.

“Ek is passievol oor vroue en om met vroue te werk. Vroue gee soveel en plaas hulself dikwels laaste. Hulle probeer eers om al die ander mense gelukkig te maak voordat hulle aan hulself dink,” sê sy. Sy belowe energie, lag, plesier en vermaak by die vroue-oggend.

The annual Compassion Convention where children can be children was a huge success.

About 65 children, 25 leaders and 50 volunteers or day visitors attended camp from Monday 15 to Thursday 19 July in Melkbosstrand. It was organised by HewLin Compassion, a non-governmental organisation (NGO).

Kraaifontein resident and founder of HewLin Compassion, Hewitt de Jager, says this year they were able to accommodate more children from different areas including Bellville, Parow, Leonsdale, Elsies River, Kuils River, Athlone and Steenberg.

Some of these children previously lived on the street while others dropped out of school and are living in extremely poor conditions. A combined effort from provincial government, NPOs, faith-based institutions, corporate industries, families, friends and individuals came together to make the camp possible for the children. They are also working towards alleviating the impoverished circumstances some are facing.

De Jager says the children enjoyed various activities, which included arts and crafts. He says representatives from the department of health were also present at the camp and spoke to the children about health-related issues and personal hygiene. “The children also learned about the issues in their communities and challenges they face, including gangsterism and drugs.”

According to De Jager, because the children might not have the best concentration span, the activities were structured in such a way that it had both theoretical and practical aspects. “The children were very hands-on and received the activities well.”

De Jager says this year’s theme “Let children be children” was an extension of last year’s theme. However, this year, the leaders were more focused on the values of the organisation. “Everything was structured around these values and the leaders also attended workshops.”

He says it is still early days to see what impact the camp had on the children but the main aim is to get children back home and in school again. De Jager says they will have follow-up sessions next month to see how the children are doing.

Drama play for community The drama showcasing the impact of problems faced in the community will be performed by Carolyn Daniels Performing Arts Angels.

The show, A long way home, is open to anyone and takes place at Bernadino Heights Se-

condary School in Scottsdene. The gala evening will be held on Thursday 15 August (R70).

The second show will take place on Friday 16 August (R40).

Die dansskool is al ses jaar oud en bestaan uit 80 geestelike dansers tussen vyf en 50 jaar oud van verskeie gemeentes.

Mopping up operations continue in city T

he disaster operations centre logged at least 43 flooding-related incidents; 122 power outages across; nine incidents of trees that had blown over or fallen branches and two incidents where roofs were blown across the metropole.

The Disaster Risk Management Centre is coordinating the City of Cape Town’s response to incidents reported.

The numbers of reported incidents during the previous cold front are as follows: . 3640 structures affected in Masiphumelele, Imizamo Yethu, Khayelitsha, Burundi, Nomzamo and Wallacedene. . fallen trees were reported in Parow, Edgemead, Crawford, Panorama, Durbanville and Brackenfell. . roads flooded across the city – most no-

tably in Wallacedene, as well as Pelican Park, Ottery and Diep River. . power outages in Strand, Bonteheuwel, Observatory, Noordhoek, Joe Slovo Park, Athlone, Wynberg, Gugulethu, Nyanga, Sunnydale, Rondebosch, Philippi, Mitchell’s Plain, Hout Bay and Plumstead.

“This situation will change as repair teams make their way through the list of reported incidents.

“We ask that residents please bear with us, as assessments have to be completed for purposes of record before assistance like flood kits can be provided. They did make emergency shelters available to the affected communities; however, these offers have not been accepted,” says Mayco member for safety and security, JP Smith.

Following the Winter Task Team’s meeting on Wednesday 24 July, blockages in the stormwater system emerged as one of the biggest concerns. These blockages are the result of illegal dumping, but also people storing items in the drains.

“Another concern raised is the quality of the information provided when members of the public log service requests or alert us to emergencies. This has the potential to slow down response times or results in the incorrect agency responding.

“A simple example is, if the emergency is at City rental stock, we ask that callers indicate such because that too will help determine the correct department to lead the response.

“Therefore, my appeal to the public when

reporting any incidents during heavy weather episodes, but also just in general, is to give as much information as possible, that our response matches their need,” says Smith.

The City reminds residents of the following tips when making a call for help: . once you have dialled the number and are through to the operator, give them your contact number first so they can call you back if you lose connection; . always give your full name; . describe your location as accurately as you can as the operator might not know your neighbourhood as you do. . give the details of your emergency and let the operator guide the conversation; . stay on the line for as long as you can.

“We request that all members to be aware of the need for compliance with national legislation and to not make use of either locally produced timber or imports that do not comply with SA standards and requirements,” Obbes concludes.

The institute was established 45 years ago to self-regulate the engineered timber roof structure industry and to provide design, manufacturing, erection, inspection and certification for compliance with inter alia SANS 10400 and SANS 10082, where engineering rational designs are applicable.

Three initiatives launched in Bloekombos for Mandela Day

he NPO, Save Our Schools (SOS) celebrated Mandela Day held earlier this month by launching three initiatives in Bloekombos.

Shelley Humphreys, executive director of the organisation, says the three initatives were collaborated efforts with SOS partners, Grundfos, Munich Re and Mountain Falls.

According to Humphreys, Grundfos employees from Cape Town donated their morning to initiating another sustainable water solution for the Bloekombos community as part of their Community Water Upliftment Project.

“This was done through installing gutters and water tanks for rainwater harvesting at the community centre, performing a central

role within the area,” says Humphreys.

Munich Re donated money to upgrade the ablutions at Masibambane Secondary School, which is an essential need at this time.

Learners at the school were also introduced to the ZeroPet Recycling Initiative by Mountain Falls.

Humphreys says presentations and activations around the importance of recycling were made to the learners in collaboration with Recycle 1st and Petco. “For each skip of PET Plastic collected by the learners, a donation will be made for one Grade 12 bursary to keep as many learners in education.”

Humphreys says this is a sustainable and essential project which educates and rewards learners who get involved.

Vrouestemme belangrik in samelewing Internasionale Vrouedag word sedert die vroeë 1900’s wêreldwyd gevier – nie net om op die prestasies van vroue te fokus nie, maar ook om te veg vir die gelyke regte van vroue.

Alhoewel ons sedertdien groot vordering gemaak het, bly geslagsongelykheid wêreldwyd steeds ’n groot probleem. Dit is ’n globale neiging dat vroue, wat meer as die helfte van die bevolking uitmaak, steeds onderverteenwoordig is.

In Suid-Afrika word die maand Augustus as Nasionale Vrouemaand en 9 Augustus spesifiek as Vrouedag gevier.

Dan bring ons plaaslik hulde aan die ongeveer 20 000 vroue, wat in die 1956-optog na die Uniegebou in Pretoria opgeruk het om protes aan te teken teen die land se paswette.

Hierdie maand vier ons alle aspekte van vrouwees en wil ons hulde bring aan vroue, ongeag hul klas of ras – wat ongesiens dag na dag hul taak onvermoeid vervul.

Hierdie vroue is ons helde omdat hulle ’n verskil maak waar hulle hul ook mag bevind. Die enkelmammas wat baie keer meer as een werk het om die pot aan die kook te hou, onderwyseresse wat die ekstra myl vir ander se kinders stap, verpleegsters, polisievroue, gemeenskapsaktiviste wat sóveel vir hul gemeenskappe doen ... die lys is nimmereindigend.

Daar is duisende vroue wat gebuk gaan onder moeilike omstandighede, maar wat dag na dag hul taak met grasie vervul en suksesvol in eie reg is. Ons as vroue moet die balans handhaaf tussen persoonlike ontwikkeling, kinders grootmaak, die huwelik en dan nog boonop kompeteer met mans om die korporatiewe leer te klim.

Ons weet dat vroue ander uitdagings as mans het en dat daar juis daarom teen vroue gediskrimineer en hulle opsetlik uit die raadsaal gehou word. Desnieteenstaande het baie vroue op verskillende terreine hoogtes bereik. Vroue speel ’n belangrike rol ter ondersteuning van huishoudings, om inkomste te genereer en om te sien na die algemene welsyn van die gesin, en om haar regmatige plek in die samelewing in te neem.

Die samelewing vereis van ons om op ’n sekere manier op te tree, ’n sekere voorkoms te hê, korrekte en suiwer taal te besig en aan ’n sekere sosiale klas te behoort. Indien jy nie aan hierdie vereistes voldoen nie, is jy nie sosiaal aanvaarbaar vir sekere groepe nie. Dus, die armlastiges, die mindere onder ons, is die uitgeworpenes en word misken. Dis egter verblywend dat die stereotipering – dat vroue se plek in die kombuis is, en dat seuns slimmer as meisies is – stelselmatig afgebreek word.

Ons sien dat meer en meer vroue dinge doen wat hulle nooit voorheen toegelaat was nie en dat vroue daagliks bewys dat hulle tot enigiets in staat is. Ons is dit eens met Michelle Obama wat sê: “Women and girls can be whatever they want.

There is no limit to what we as women can accomplish.”

Ons as vroue is almal gelyk, ongeag ons velkleur of status; ons staar almal dieselfde uitdagings in die gesig. Dit is nie asof die wêreld ’n vreugdevolle, wonderlike plek vir ons is nie – ons moet nog steeds veg vir gelyke regte en teen geweld op verskillende vlakke. Dus, in plaas van jou te bekommer oor hoe jy oorkom, wees trots op jouself en wat jy tot dusver bereik het.

Safety should be contractors’ first priority I live in Pinehurst in Durbanville. On Thursday (25 July) I was driving past the corner of Wellington and Langeberg Road and was shocked when I saw a contractor and his workers cutting the branches of a eucalyptus tree.

They had no safety equipment and the vehicle they were using was most definitely not roadworthy.

It is a huge concern that the municipality gets these contractors – presumably untrained in safety – to do such dangerous work without the correct safety equipment.

Does the municipality check on these contractors?

Do these contractors have insurance in case of an accident.

What about the threat to people’s lives and property?

We know it is BEE appointments, but that is not the problem.

We want people to have work and do their work, but surely safety comes first and foremost.

Rock at the Hillcrest Quarry Local band Axenmore, will pay tribute to bands such as ACDC, Bon Jovi, Deep Purple, Guns And Roses, Led Zeppelin, Nirvana, Queen and Toto in the show Legends in Rock at the Hillcrest Quarry (indoor event) on Sunday 4 August at 14:00.

Louis Lourens, a resident from Melkbosstrand, who goes by the stage name Axe, has been a professional musician since the age of 17. He won the Fretboard

Frenzy Fastest Guitarist in the Western Cape Competition three years in a row from 2009 to 2011.

Axe has been a vocalist, guitarist and songwriter since February 2016 and has his own rock band called Axenmore.

They have been influenced by bands such as Led Zeppelin, Bon Jovi, The Darkness, ACDC, Black Sabbath and Guns and Roses, but also play ‘‘softer songs’’.

Axenmore plays at various functions and events such as parties, festivals, pub gigs, biker rally’s and weddings. Current members include Tauna Collier (vocals), Rob Stemmet (bass guitar) and Sebastian Guile (drums).

Axe was asked to play in The Queen Tribute Show with Joseph Clark last year. He travelled around South Africa with them and to Europe to perform in the Netherlands. Phone Axe on 083 367 2665.

rank Opperman is terug met ’n splinternuwe eenmanvertoning, wat beloof om gehore aan te gryp en te laat lag.

In Donkie ontmoet ons vir Barry Swart, 58jarige hoof van die Hoërskool Hans Oosthuizen, ’n voormalige model C-skool. Donkie is die bynaam wat almal vir die skoolhoof gebruik.

Meneer Swart is ’n man onder druk. Daar was ’n berig in ’n Sondagkoerant oor hoe die eens trotse Hoërskool Hans Oosthuizen besig is om agteruit te gaan.

Die akademiese prestasie van die leerders is nie na wense nie en die eerste rugbyspan het vyf wedstryde agtereenvolgens verloor.

SOKKERTOERNOOI IN NORTHPINE: ENIGSTE MEISIE IN SEUNSPAN

ie skare het die afgelope Saterdag op Central Park in Northpine toegesak om die meisie-weergawe van Mo Salah van Liverpool in Engeland in aksie te sien.

Altesame 32 sokkerspanne het aan die mini-wêreldbekertoernooi vir o.8- en o.10-spanne deelgeneem.

Skyler Alexander (9) was almal se held, want sy is die enigste meisie wat saam met die seuns speel. Sy speel in Northpine United se o.8-span.

“Sy is die een met die lang vlegsels en hoor net hoe word sy aangemoedig om die doelwagter te klop!” het ’n trotse pa, André Diedericks (42), gesê.

Die graad 3-sokkerster presteer nie net op die sokkerveld nie, maar ook akademies by die Laerskool Boston in Bellville.

Volgens haar pa maak sy nie net haar sokkerklub trots nie, maar sy is die queen met sokkerspeletjies op die Xbox.

Hoewel haar span nie tot die volgende ronde deurgedring het nie, was almal bly toe sy

met haar vinnige voete ’n doel kon skiet, wat die toeskouers opgewonde gemaak het.

Diedericks sê hy en Skyler se ma, TraceyLee Alexander, staan bankvas agter hul sokkerspelende dogter.

“Haar groot droom is eendag om vir Liverpool of Banyana Banyana uit te draf. Sy hoop ook om eendag daar te wees om haar groot helde van Liverpool te sien speel.”

Sergio Pasquallie, afrigter van Northpine United se o.8A-span, sê Skyler maak almal baie trots. Hy sê haar vaardighede op die veld is ook baie goed en hulle het nie nodig om hard aan haar vaardighede te werk wanneer hulle oefen nie.

Hy sê hulle “Mo Salah” gaan nog vir haar ouers rekords breek.

Chad Fish, ’n sokkeraanhanger, sê dit was lekker om die kinders sokker te sien speel en hy het ’n gelukkige gevoel gehad toe hy Skyler sien speel.

“Dit was die hoogtepunt vir my en my vriende,” sê hy. Mcebisi Bokolo en Sto Nongogo van Khayelitsha sê hulle het dit geniet om kinders op so ’n jong ouderdom te sien wat ’n naam vir hulself maak.

Nongogo sê sport hou die kinders weg van dwelms en misdaad en hy het die toernooi geniet.

Swartland laat leemte in sokkergemeenskap AVRIL FILLIES Die heengaan van Maxwell Swartland (61) van Bishop Lavis, alombekend as Max, is ’n groot slag vir die sokkergemeenskap in die Wes-Kaap en nie net vir die Bishop Lavis-gemeenskap nie.

Sy sokkerspore strek so ver as die Overberg, waar hy eiehandig gehelp het om sokkervelde te skep. Hy het self met ’n skoffel en graaf ingeklim om ’n stuk veld skoon te maak sodat ander sokkerliefhebbers daar ook sy liefde vir die spel kan deel.

In sy huldeblyk by die begrafnisdiens in Goodwood, het Paul Arendse, sekretaris van die sokkervereniging, gesê dat Swartland se lewe in vier dae onvoorwaardelik omgekeer is.

“Max het op Vrydag 5 Julie afgetree uit die staatsdiens, sy 61ste verjaardag op Sondag 7 Julie gevier, op dieselfde dag die jaarvergadering in Macassar bygewoon, die Cokebekerwedstryde bygewoon en Dinsdag 9 Julie, is hy nie meer met ons nie,” het Arendse gesê.

Swartland het sy hoërskoolloopbaan in 1972 by die Hoërskool John Ramsay in Bishop Lavis begin en was in sy matriekjaar in 1976 die hoofseun.

Sy groot glimlag was eie aan hom en hy het altyd ander se belange bo sy eie gestel.

Hy het sy sokkerloopbaan by die destydse Goodwood Rangers begin en later vir Celtic gespeel voordat hy as sekretaris by die Bishop Lavis-sokkerklub begin het.

In 1990 was hy een van die afgevaardigdes van die Noordelikes-unie se onderhandelingspan, wat instrumenteel was in die samesmelting met die Central-Sokkerunie,

wat in Matroosfontein gesetel was.

Arendse en Swartland het saam op die uitvoerende bestuur van Noordelikes gedien, terwyl Swartland ook lid was van die Bishop Lavis-sokkerklub. Deur dié samesmelting is die nou bekende Noordelike Voorstede Plaaslike Sokkervereniging (NSLFA) in 1991 gestig.

In die huldeblyk van die Suid-Skiereilandse Plaaslike Sokkervereniging word hy as ’n sokkerreus beskryf.

“Hy was bekend as iemand wat altyd sokker Maxwell Swartland eerste gestel het deur die spel op enige moontlike manier bekend te stel, aan te beveel of om ’n paar balle saam met die juniors rond te skop. Hoewel hy later ’n administrateur was, het hy nooit sy passie vir sokker verloor nie,” het ’n verteenwoordiger van die vereniging gesê.

Max het in die Overberg-streek self die doelpale rondgedra, in vergaderings gesit om die spel te bevorder of om sokkerkompetisies te reël.

“Wanneer wedstryde in Bishop Lavis gespeel moes word, het ons geweet hy sal op die veld wees om te help om moontlike probleme op te los,” het die huldeblyk verder gelui.

David Slater, een van sy sokkervriende, het gesê dat Swartland ’n sagmoedige reus

was.

Ernest Zondi, sekretaris van Safa Kaapstad, het hom as Mnr. Sokker beskryf.

“Ons was al die jare vriende – op en van die veld af. As enigeen van ons hulp nodig gehad het, het ons nie geskroom om te bel en daarvoor te vra nie.

“Ek gaan hom baie mis, veral sy geselsies ná wedstryde en die groot glimlag op sy gesig,” het Zondi gesê.

Vernon Seymour het in sy huldeblyk genoem dat Swartland in die sewentiger- en tagtigerjare gesorg het dat jong seuns by sokker betrokke raak en nie deel word van bendes nie.

Perry Uys, een van sy spanmaats by Goodwood Rangers, het gesê dat Swartland baie gewild was onder die spelers en altyd betrokke was by die juniors die Saterdagoggend voordat hy die middag sy klubverpligtinge as senior moes nakom.

Volgens Johannes Lewis, voorsitter van Bishop Lavis-sokkerklub, was Swartland die streeksekretaris van Safa Kaapstad van 2006 tot 2016 en koördineerder van die SA Brouerye se ligakompetisie. Van 2014 tot 2019 was hy die sekretaris en registrasiebeampte by die klub.

“Toe Max in 2014 by die klub aangesluit het, het hy ’n groot rol in die verandering

van die klub se grondwet gespeel.

“Hy het nie net sy eie rolle waarin hy aangestel is nie, vervul nie, maar ook op ander vlakke van bestuur in die klub, handjie bygesit.

“Hy was een van die jongste lede wat op die NLFA gedien het en het ook die meeste poste vervul op die Bishop Lavis-Sportforum (BLASARA),” het Lewis gesê.

Swartland was ook ’n mense-mens en geen werk was te klein of te groot vir hom om te doen nie.

In 2007 is hy deur Safa as die streeksekretaris van die Overbergstreek aangestel en was hy vir al die administratiewe pligte verantwoordelik.

“Weens sy betrokkenheid by die klub het ons talle bekers ingepalm. Sy familie was ook vir hom belangrik, en namens die klub wil ek hom vir sy bydrae tot spelers en sokker salueer,” het Lewis gesê.

Swartland is voorverlede Saterdag vanuit die Anglikaanse kerk St. Albans in Goodwood begrawe en laat ’n seun en dogter agter.
