Title deed chaos

or months title deeds to houses in Wallacedene, Kraaifontein, were available at the housing office in Kuils River, but it seems none of the homeowners knew they could sign for the deeds there. So, last week Wednesday when the City visited the community, the Wallacedene Community Hall was in chaos because people did not know what was happening. Suzette Little, Mayco member for Area North, ascribed the chaos to the fact that the hall was not set up as she had instructed. “They [the organisers] were supposed to

set it up so that there were stations from registration to where they got their papers.” Little said that over the past six years, the City has handed over thousands of title deeds to residents to ensure they are confirmed as rightful owners. “In one of the City’s latest title deed projects, more than 17 000 title deeds have been found at various housing offices that are yet to be issued to the rightful owners or are still in the process of being transferred to residents,” she said. The transfer of ownership and handing over of title deeds is in line with the City’s commitment to redressing the imbalances of

the apartheid past where people where denied ownership of property, she said. Local councillors were upset because they were not included in the process. They told TygerBurger on the day that the visit could have been streamlined in advance. Grant Twigg, chairman of subcouncil 2, and Brenda Hanse, councillor for Scottsville, both said they had received invitations to be there, but had no idea what exactly was expected of them. Simpiwe Nonkeyizana, councillor for Wallacedene, said that like Twigg and Hansen, he was also attending only as an invitee. V To page 2

There are so many phenomenal women with whom we share our daily lives – our mothers, wives, children, neighbours, best friends – most of them anchors who help steer our lives with steadfast care and love. With August being Women’s Month, we at TygerBurger and our sister publications (People’s Post and City Vision) wish to honour the women in our lives by honouring those women who have experienced and beaten the worst of life’s hardships and ills, emerging as survivors, proud and dignified. Please help us to help restore a little of this dignity as we once again embark on a special monthly campaign by providing Bags of Hope – literally, handbags filled with all the essentials a rape or abuse survivor might need. Two years ago the Chill Room in our offices was filled to the brim with these Bags of Hope, which contained everything from bras and panties to sanitary pads, perfume and talc, washcloths and soap, toothpaste and chocolates. In some cases, the bags contained a handwritten note wishing the receiver well on her journey to recovery and a life outside of abuse and violence. We are hoping to recreate this female pantry and be able to donate all the items we receive to a charity of our readers’ choosing. For this, we are once more calling for help from our loyal readers – those caring people who have supported our monthly campaigns so faithfully since the beginning of the year. So, if you have a handbag or two and the means to fill it with what you would have appreciated were you a recipient yourself, please bring it to our offices. We will ensure it goes to a place where it will bring light and joy amid pain and suffering. V Donate, and nominate your charity at briewe@tyg erburger.co.za. V Delivery is on the third floor of the Bloemhof Build ing at 112 Edward Street, and at Vangate Mall.
