VAGRANTS IN EIKENDAL: RESIDENTS COMPLAIN ABOUT MESS
Avenue of annoyance SALETTE CLOETE
V
agrants are becoming a real nuisance in Eikendal, Kraaifontein, say locals. The complaint made to TygerBurger is that vagrants take garbage out of bins, sort through it and take what they want, then dump the rest on the ground. Cliff Naidoo and his neighbours in 6th Avenue say they’ve had enough. “There was a group of vagrants or homeless people sleeping in front of the clinic
here, but there is one specific man who is also a danger to others.” Naidoo, an elderly man, says he keeps his yard clean but that the homeless people are creating problems for people like him who like neatness and tidiness. Naidoo adds he is unable to go out and confront any person on his own. For this reason he took his complaint to two different ward councillors and the City. “It was much worse. This one man actually sleeps in the filth that he collects from
bins and drains.” Naidoo says what makes the problem interesting is that security guards at the clinic keep the vagrants’ blankets and possessions for them. “This means they can roam about all day and come back at night with no worry that their things may have been stolen or taken away.” Brenda Hansen, ward councillor for Scottsville, confirms that Naidoo contacted her and that she instructed City employees
to clean up the area and to keep an eye out for people who litter. Hansen also says that Naidoo asked her to speak to the ‘dangerous’ man he had complained about. “This man is a patient of Stikland hospital,” she says. Hansen says the man in question keeps running away from the hospital, so she contacted his family, who live in Scottsdene. “I also contacted [the Department of] Social Development, so now they are aware of this case and will follow up with his family.”
