Farmer gunned down DESIREÉ RORKE

A farmer was brutally gunned down in his home on a smallholding in Joostenbergvakte on Friday morning – the second murder in 18 months in the area.

According to Capt Gerhard Niemand of the Kraaifontein Police, the incident occurred at about 03:30 after the alarm of the house sounded. Phillip Weber (63), got up and went to the lounge to investigate the cause of the alarm. He walked towards the win-

dow with a torch to look outside when two shots were fired at him from outside the window.

“One bullet penetrated his face and lodged in his neck. His son, after hearing the shots pulled his father away from the window to safety, but he died from his injuries on the scene,” said Niemand.

According to Niemand the mounted unit of the police and trackers were called to the scene from where they followed tracks which led from the house in the direction of Fisantekraal. The track was lost at

the tar road at Fisantekraal.

Two men from Bloekombos, who were found near the house, were taken to the Kraaifontein Police Station for questioning, but could not be linked to the crime.

“Their details, whereabouts and photos are in possession of the police, should they at a later stage be linked to the crime,” Niemand said.

Ballistics found two rounds at the scene of the crime and marks on the window sill as well as fingerprints which were lifted for further investigation.

No arrests have been made.

Weber lived in Joostenbergvlakte for 28 years, where he was a vegetable and goat farmer and known member of the community.

“He loved fishing and dabbled in wine making. He was a family man who loved spending time with his granddaughters,” said his wife Linda. He leaves behind his wife Linda and two children.

His funeral will take place at the New Apostolic Church in Windsor Park Kraaifontein, at 11:00 on Saturday.

Buses make up for train wheel shortage

In addition to overhauling existing wheels, the procurement of new wheels is already well advanced. International companies have been approached to supply new wheels to speed up the return of the full complement of trains in the region.

The special express bus service operates in morning peak between Kraaifontein/Kuils River/Brackenfell/Bellville/Eikenfontein and Cape Town. The buses operate via the R300/N2 to take advantage of the BMT fast lane and do not stop en route.

The shortage of capacity is mainly due to the failure of suppliers to meet the agreed maintenance plan for train wheels. The major supplier of wheels is Transnet Rail Engineering (TRE).

Metrorail’s announcement comes in the wake of a shortage of trains to adequately cope with demand on the northern route. Trains on the Northern Line clock the

highest kilometres of travel, requiring more frequent wheel maintenance and replenishment. The shortage of trains in the north also necessitated a delicate reallocation of trains from other lines to meet some of the most crucial demand for capacity.

Thirteen trains have been sent to various suppliers for light and heavy maintenance. Some are anticipated to be back in service as early as next week with the remain-

der expected to return to service by the end of the month. Metrorail has procured the services of all the companies in South Africa able to perform this kind of work; the largest with most capacity being TRE. TRE has been unable to meet the demand as agreed in the last 12 months. The sheer volume of wheels requiring overhaul has already prompted TRE Western Cape to double shift working to deliver sufficient stock to meet Metrorail’s

maintenance demand.

The issue of sufficient numbers and speedier production has been on the two company’s agenda since last year. Regional manager Lindelo Matya conceded that the slow pace of delivery remains top of his agenda in their frequent production and supply meetings: “TRE management acknowledges that their current rate of supply is short of the initially agreed quantity to meet our needs. We urgently need

New Curro school for Pinehurst ESMÉ ERASMUS

A new Curro Private School is to be opened in January 2013 on a 10ha site in the new Pinehurst development in Durbanville.

The school and a shopping centre is the next phase in providing the infrastructure needed by a community that will eventually top 3 000 homes, said Renier Smith, operations manager of Garden Cities.

A retirement village is also soon to follow.

“Because no public school is scheduled for the area, Garden Cities has signed with Curro Holdings to develop a school,” said Smith.

The school will open, catering in the first stage for pre-reception through to at least Grade 5 with the senior grades to come a little later.

“It is an absolute pleasure and privilege to be associated with a school of this calibre and we know that it will add a huge amount of additional value to our development and give our residents the highest level of education at an affordable cost,” Smith said.

According to Malcolm Law, project co-ordinator of Curro Holdings, the school will be able to offer fees close to those Western Cape education department schools of similar calibre.

“Because of the economics of scale, the school would provide a level of education in line with other Curro schools around the country,” he said.

This school will be one of three new Curro schools of this model that will be opened nationally in 2013. The other two will be in Pretoria and Burgersfort (Limpopo).

It will have a large pre-primary school, which will be distinct from the main school buildings.

“It is planned that the school will start out with about 400 pupils. It will accommodate 1 200 primary school children and 800 high school

Construction of this R40 million project is expected to start in April or May. In the first phase about 20 classrooms and specialist rooms, as well as administration offices, will be built. It is hoped to cater for Grade R to Grade 5 at least, he said.

Action sports courts are planned for action soccer, cricket and more.

“These will also be available to the community,” Law said.

The new school is designed to serve a larger community.

“It will lighten the pressure on the waiting list on the other Curro Private School.

“There is a great need for quality schooling in that area. The price of schooling will make quality educa-

tion accessible,” he said.

A Grade 1 pupil will pay about R1 300 school fees. Classes will be slightly larger – about 30 children per class – than in the other Curro Private School in Durbanville situated a couple of kilometres away, where only 24 children are allowed per class.

“The school will compare with the best schools in Durbanville,” Law said.

It will still be a private school, registered with the department of education, he said.

Phase two of the project will consist of rolling out to Grade 9 and then, in the third phase, to Grade 12.

“If the demand is there, we can bring the last two phases forward,” he said.

The matriculants will write the National Senior Certificate examination.

“There are further synergies as the school will be adjacent to suitably zoned sites for pre-primary facilities, creating an education hub that will cover the entire spectrum of Pinehurst’s school-level education needs,” said Smith.

The retirement village, which will be called Rochefort, will consist of 149 single residential erven ranging in size from 271 m² to 497 m².

Most erven, however, will be about 350 to 380 m² in size.

The erven will only be available for sale from 2013.

The access-controlled village will be developed with private roads and its own private park and club-

house.

Another innovative development on the perimeter of the suburb is a storage facility that is expected to be used extensively by residents of Pinehurst to store their excess goods, caravans and boats.

The facility is being developed by Stor-Age on a 1,2ha site of which 8 600m² will be available for rental.

The Pinehurst development has been acknowledged in a national survey to have one of the highest capital growth percentages in its category in South Africa.

Pinehurst showed an average sales price rise on resales of over 20 percent over the past three years. It is one of two major suburbs in the Cape Metropole currently being developed by Garden Cities.

System failed victims DESIREÉ RORKE

Failed by the system and placed back into the clutches of a “monster” only to be abused over and over again.

Two young girls were powerless while their father sexually exploited them for as long as they can remember, only to be saved after a friend broke the silence almost a year ago.

The sentencing hearing of the man who stands accused of sexually assaulting and raping his two daughters and three of their friends, took place in the Blue Downs Regional Court on Wednesday last week.

Called to the stand, investigating officer W/O Shireen Rodgers from the sexual offences unit described this case as the worst she has ever came across in 16 years.

“I will never forget the day we arrested him. The girls were dressed like prostitutes, in very high heels and inappropriate for their ages of 10 and 12. They each sat on one of his legs and he said to them, ‘Don’t worry papa is coming back’,” she testified at the hearing.

According to her the sexual abuse was first reported to the authorities back in January 2010, more than a year prior to his arrest in May 2011.

TygerBurger learned that the primary school the girls attended, reported the abuse after one of the girls told her teacher.

According to Rodgers, the police and social workers were then involved and she cannot understand how the children were placed back into the care of their father at that time.

According to her the children’s mother and the family of the accused were well aware of what he had done to them.

A confidential social report states the accused at this time underwent pastoral counselling, but admitted to a social worker that

it wasn’t helping him. The children were nevertheless placed back in his care, after he “promised not to do it again”.

Back home, the exploitation continued unabated for nearly another year during which three of the girls’ friends – all from broken homes – were also drawn into his net, to be raped and assaulted.

According to Rodgers the authorities decided not to charge the mother of the children in May last year, as she herself was a minor when she got involved with the accused, and was suffering from alcohol dependency.

“We could not traumatise the children more by taking their mother away from them as well,” she said.

At the time of the arrest the mother had already separated from the accused.

Rodgers continued to describe the case, saying it was even more appalling than cases of child trafficking.

“These girls were given cigarettes and alcohol in order to lure their friends over, who were also abused. He used his own daughters in this regard. These children never had a childhood and the only warmth they ever experienced was exploitation. They had a hard life,” she said.

TygerBurger learned from a reliable source that he had also given them dagga to smoke, before committing the crimes, and making them watch pornographic films.

According to Rodgers he was exceptionally crafty when grooming the children for

abuse. She stated that the children thought these acts of sexual abuse to be natural as they never knew anything else, and that the accused showed no realisation of what he had done, as he afterward stated that the victims had asked for it.

The children are currently in the care of the accused’s family while custody is being decided.

A mother of one of the other victims told the court “to put him away for life”.

“We don’t want him on the streets of Brackenfell,” she said visibly shaking and close to tears after she read out a letter her daughter had written to the court.

The content of this letter indicates the extent of the emotional and psychological damage done to this young girl.

It also became apparent from this letter that the accused’s daughters had to endure this abuse their entire lives, and were aware of the fact that their father would go to jail should they “tell anyone”.

The mother told the court that her daughter “will never be over it”.

The Sexual Offences Act clearly states that anybody who has knowledge that a sexual offence has been committed against a child must report it to the police, and failing to do so constitutes a crime.

At the time of going to print, TygerBurger was still awaiting a response from the South African Police Service.

The case continues in the Blue Downs Regional Court on 13 March.

Would­be thief learns crime does not pay The swift response of three ADT Security officers foiled an attempt by an alleged burglar to break into the computer room of Northpine Primary School in Brackenfell earlier this month.

Responding to an alarm activation in the early hours of 4 February, ADT Security officers Russell Capes, Johannes Philander and David Xesha arrived at the school.

There, they scaled the fence and caught up with the unknown male managing to corner and apprehend him before handing him over to members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) Kraaifontein.

Upon further investigation of the schoolgrounds the officers discovered that while the computer room door had been badly damaged, the suspect had not been able to get inside or take anything.

Northpine Primary School principal John Hendriks says he was very impressed with the officers’ perseverance: “I must commend Officers Capes, Philander and Xesha who acted swiftly and efficiently to apprehend the suspect.

Gun licences waiting to be collected More than 2 000 firearm licences are piling up at the Durbanville Police Station – all “dressed up with nowhere to go”.

According to Lt Marchell Rhode of the Durbanville police, all the firearm owners were notified by SMS to collect their licences. However, personal details such as address and cellphone numbers may have changed since they handed in their applications.

He asks that owners contact the Durbanville police to update their personal details if they have changed.

People can contact the police on 021 970 3816/28/03 with their identification number to enquire if their

licence(s) are waiting ready for collection.

“We also want to remind licensed firearm owners that during 2012 many licences issued in terms of the Firearm Controls Act will expire, and need to be renewed.

“This process is not automatic and a licensee will have to submit an application 90 days prior to the expiry date at his or her local police station in terms of the legislation,” he said.

“The ownership of a firearm is not only governed by national legislation, but is also a huge social responsibility and we therefore appeal to firearm owners to take the necessary care fo their firearms,” Rhode said.

Om altyd drome te hê, verantwoordelikheid te neem, hard te werk en balans te handhaaf, is Adriaan Bergh, 2011 se Mnr. Suid-Afrika, se leuse in die lewe.

Hiermee het hy die leerders by Hoërskole Brackenfell en Settlers verlede Woensdag toegespreek as deel van ’n landwye skooltoer om jongmense vir die nuwe jaar te motiveer.

Die toer het op 17 Januarie afgeskop in samewerking met Huisgenoot, You en Drum, en sluit meer as 50 skole in al nege provinsies in om ’n beoogde 30 000 leerlinge te bereik.

“My ouers het die belangrikheid van balans by my ingeprent en as

gevolg daarvan verstaan ek hoe belangrik dit is om sport, akademie en leierskap te balanseer,” sê hy.

Op 24 is dié jong Mnr. Suid-Afrika, indrukwekkend.

Op skool, in Bela-Bela, het hy provinsiale kleure vir ses sportsoorte verwerf: krieket, rugby, gholf, tennis, landloop en tweekamp.

Tot onlangs toe was hy lid van die Bulle-rugbyspan in die Vodacombeker-reeks en ’n lid van Limpopo se o.23-gholfspan.

Daarby het hy verlede jaar sy graad in bourekeningkunde aan die Universiteit van Pretoria voltooi en op die oomblik is hy besig met sy honneursgraad.

Hy het sy ondervinding op die sportveld, in die akademie, van sy reise en ’n sterk familie-agtergrond saamgevoeg in ’n beweging ge-

naamd Balanced 24/7, wat die grondslag van sy motiveringspraatjies vorm.

Die projek was Adriaan se eie inisiatief, geïnspireer deur die wens om jongmense te help om hul volle potensiaal in die lewe te bereik.

“Tiger Woods was net sewe toe hy vir sy pa gesê het hy gaan eendag die beste golfspeler in die wêreld word.

“Hy het ’n droom gehad om voor te werk,” het Adriaan Dinsdag aan leerders gesê.

“Om jou drome te bereik, moet jy dit kan sien. Dan kan jy met harde werk enigiets regkry.”

Kraaifontein’s first minstrel group, Posh Vibrant Youth Development, has managed to bank a bag full of trophies at this year’s Klopse competition.

Their hard work and dedication has certainly paid off as they are 18 trophies richer after the lengthy competition. The competition took place in Forida Park, Ravensmead between 2 January and 4 February.

The group received trophies for best dressed, best band, and best board, which was a scale-sized float of CapeGate Shopping Centre and a trophy in each of the several singing items.

The minstrels practised from May last year and plan to start doing the same this year.

Zane Hawyn and his wife, Mariam, who are two of the founders of the group, worked tirelessly with some of the members to make their uniforms.

Even though the group are from Kraaifontein and represent Kraaifontein, not all members are from Kraaifontein. Some of them come from as far as Elsies River, Mitchells Plain and Delft.

The aim of the minstrels was not only to have fun but also an initiative to get youth involved in this cultural experience.

As the founding members are from the Cape Flats where they were exposed to this culture, they wanted to share their roots with the community of Kraaifontein.

They also believe that this is an excellent way to get youth off the streets and steer them away from harmful elements such as alcoholism, drug abuse and gansterism.

Better MDR­TB treatment hope for kids Researchers working at Tygerberg Children’s Hospital could make a breakthrough in the way they treat these children with a five-year study that has just been started.

Researchers from Stellenbosch University’s Desmond Tutu TB Centre, situated at Tygerburg Hospital, are hoping that new studies will ultimately improve treatment for the increasing number of children in the Western Cape that have contracted MDR-TB. “We’re looking at the side-effects of the cocktail of drugs children need to take, what dose we should be giving them and the interaction between antiretrovirals and TB,” says Professor Simon Schaaf, who is leading the study.

About nine percent of children who display TB symptoms, have MDR-TB, a virulent form of tuberculosis that is difficult and expensive to treat.

Schaaf says as long as there’s dedicated treatment, the prognosis for a cure for MDR-TB is better for children than for adults.

But the drugs are not childfriendly and can have side-effects ranging from severe nausea to loss of hearing. Over 20 percent of children on MDR-TB treatment become deaf or are left with some loss of hearing.

“We need to tailor the treatment to children. We know the right dose for adults to get to the right blood levels to be cured of MDR-TB. But what dose do you give a two-yearold?

“We’re looking at different children on a different combination of drugs. What are the genetic considerations? Are there some kids who are more prone to hearing loss?

How can we make these drugs safer for children?

These are the things we’re looking at,” says Schaaf.

Director of Paediatric Research at the Desmond Tutu TB Centre, Anneke Hesseling, says the current drugs are not designed for children, as they are far too big, difficult to swallow and taste terrible. It’s also hard to break them up to get the exact dosage.

“These drugs have been around for ages. For MDR-TB, we’ve been using the same drugs for decades,” says Hesseling.

Mothers like Nobuntu Mahlatshana from Crossroads would be grateful for shorter and better treatment. Her four-year-old daughter, Siyamthanda, has been on treatment for MDR-TB for 15 months.

“She had to take five or six different kinds of pills, which I crushed every day and mixed with joghurt.

She used to vomit a lot when she took them. Now that she’s well, she’s stopped the pills, but she refuses to have that kind of joghurt!”

“It’s an exciting time for childhood TB. After 50 years of silence, there may be new TB drugs and at last, a better outcome for children,” says Schaaf.

Social benefits recount overdue The South African Social Agency (Sassa) has started a process of re-registering 15.3 million people countrywide who receive social grant benefits.

Of this number of existing beneficiaries, 10,3 million are children.

The re-registration is done to fight fraud and corruption and to ensure social grants are paid to the right people.

The Western Cape has been identified as one of the hotspots in the country, where people receive grants fraudulently.

This process is one in which beneficiaries’ identification will be verified and follows concerns raised by the auditor general over the years.

Sassa is developing a new payment model to be supported by effective administration and management systems and will enable it to directly pay the correct social grant to the right person.

Roughly this means an estimate of 65 000 people will have to be re-registered per day countrywide to complete this process by the end of the year.

Re-registration will be handled at beneficiaries’ local pay points.

Hopefully this will stop many unauthorised people receiving grants.

This is a very necessary and commendable process, yet we are not convinced that this is feasible by the end of this year.

However, if this could be reached by the cut-off date (or even if it has to be extended with a couple of months) it is a big step forward in the fight against corruption.

Die kruising tussen Ou Paarlweg en Brackenfell-boulevard is amper sonder uitsondering elke oggend ’n gemors. Hoekom? Want die motoriste wat uit Kraaifontein se kant van Ou Paarlweg af kom, dink as die lig oranje is, beteken dit gee vet en staan die kruising toe.

Hulle gee nie ’n flenter om vir dié wat kan ry of karre wat in Brackenfell-boulevard tot by die Bottelarypad staan nie. Of veral die trokke wat dink hulle is Mini’s – ry oor en staan die hele kruising toe.

Hulle sit en staar voor hulle soos soutpilare en maak of hul salig onbewus is van die chaos wat hul veroorsaak.

So een keer in ’n paar maande word ons vereer met die teenwoordigheid van verkeerspolisie (seker van ’n ander dorp af), net om nooit weer daarna gesien te word nie. Die goeie nuus is natuurlik seker dat ek my nie hoef te bekommer oor verkeersreëls nie.

Ek wonder wat is die wit (geel) olifante wat weerskante van die kruising by die robots staan? Miskien was die idee dat die verkeerskameras die leemte vul in die afwesigheid van die verkeerspolisie? Net jammer dat jy nog steeds ’n paar hande nodig het om film in te sit – wat duidelik nie in Brackenfell rondlê nie.

Dis mos absoluut verregaande dat dit mens ’n volle uur moet vat om tot by die R300 te kom uit Proteahoogte via Brackenfell-boulevard!

Word daar een of ander “divine intervention” beplan vir die afsienbare toekoms? Of nee wag – as belastingbetalende inwoner dring ek aan op “divine intervention”! Ek het intussen ’n “lone ranger” opgespoor in die vorm van die verkeersman wat elke oggend getrou, vriendelik en professioneel help om Laerskool Bastion se skoliere oor die voetoorgang te kry. Baie dankie – ek wens daar was vele meer soos jy!

Van die robot op die hoek van Stanley en Frans Conradie wil ek nie eers praat nie. Ek staan nog by die robot, dan sien jy daar ry die motors al oor die brug van die N1 na Vredekloof.

BEKOMMERD Brackenfell

Ek voel genoop om my en ander motoriste se noodkrete kliphard uit te gil aan die Stad Kaapstad se verkeersdepartement.

Nee magtig, om elke liewe oggend vir ure vasgepen te sit in opeenhopings van al die hoofuitgange na Bellvile, Kaapstad en ander roetes, is om van gek te raak.

Die verkeersligte se sinkronisasie by Digteby/Pionier in Kuilsrivier se hoofweg, die R300, La Belleweg, Nooiensfontein/Silversands en vele ander, is so opgefoeter.

Waar is die verkeersbeamptes om net ’n bietjie te wys dat hul darem bereid is om die verkeer te reguleer (ek dink die terme is “trek”) en motoriste wat almal betyds by hul werk moet wees se frustrasie ligter te maak?

Snaaks genoeg, sommige oggende as ek my dogter aflaai by Hoërskool De Kuilen, is daar sowaar drie verkeersmotors wat aan leerders met motorfietse boetes uitdeel. Kan hul nie meer beteken op kritieke plekke nie? Word asseblief net pro-aktief, verkeershoofde, en ry soggens na die bogenoemde areas en kry self ’n voorsmakie van wat ons elke oggend moet verduur.

City water ‘entirely safe’ Despite an earthy taste and odour in the drinking water, the water is absolutely safe to drink, the City of Cape Town assured residents last week.

The taste and odour are caused by Geosmin and MIB (2-Methyl-iso-Borneol), which originates from two of the major dams supplying the City with water, the Theewaterskloof and Volvlei dams.

It is found in surface waters such as rivers and dams, as organic molecules produced by blue-green algae.

This phenomenon usually only occurs once a year for a few weeks during the summer months.

Bright sun, warm temperatures and nutrients result in ideal growing conditions for the algae.

The compounds are produced inside the algae cells and are only released when the algae die.

“The water, however, is perfectly safe and fit for human consumption,” said Peter

Flower, manager of the city’s bulk water supply branch.

“Continuous water quality monitoring by our accredited laboratory has revealed elevated Geosmin concentrations, greater than 10 nanograms per litre (ng/l).

“In general, the human perception threshold is about 15 and 20ng/l for Geosmin odour and taste respectively.

“People with a heightened sense of smell and taste would be the first to notice the presence of Geosmin in their water supply.

“These are extremely low concentrations.

It should be noted that a nanogram is a billionth of a gram,” Flower said.

According to him the water is treated with activated carbon.

“The very tiny organic molecules are adsorbed by the carbon particles and the carbon is then removed from the water.

“It is not possible to remove all molecules, but the aim is to maintain the concentration below the normal human taste and smell threshold.”

City to manage passenger rail Transport Minister S’bu Ndebele has announced the intended transfer of control over Metrorail’s passenger rail services from Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA) to the city.

“Given that we regard Metrorail (passenger rail) as the backbone of our public transport service and given its fundamental role in achieving our economic and social inclusion imperatives, it is extremely important for the city and for our residents that there is a substantial improvement in the quality, frequency, reliability and safety of this service” said the city’s mayoral committee member for transport, roads and stormwater, Councillor Brett Herron.

“It is also vital that we are able to plan and implement our transport plan in an integrated way. The transfer of the rail subsidy to the city must however come with full management au-

thority,” said Councillor Herron.

The city approached the National Minister of Transport last year with a view to conducting a due diligence study of Metrorail operations in Cape Town in order to be able to make an informed decision about requesting transfer of the rail subsidy, and to be able to present a viable business plan for future city management of passenger rail.

“We are now in the process of finalizing the tender. We expect to advertise for the appointment of a team of experts who will conduct a thorough investigation,” said Councilor Herron.

The due diligence study is supported by an Inter-governmental Project Steering Committee with representatives from the National Department of Transport, Western Cape provincial government and the city.

The estimated time of completion of the study is November 2012.

Dié organisasie fokus daarop om kinderslagoffers van geweld wat sake by die polisie aanmeld te ondersteun en hulle projekte help elke jaar meer as 13 000 kinders. In die Wes-Kaap het die organisasie al drie kindervriendelike aanmeldingsfasiliteite by die polisie se eenhede vir gesinsgeweld, kinderbeskerming en seksuele misdrywe oopgemaak. Binnekort heropen een by die Parowhof vir seksuele misdrywe. Meer as 500 polisiebeamptes en 40 mediese dokters is al opgelei om slagoffers op die regte wyse te hanteer.

Die pretdag bied vir maatskappye en ondernemings die ideale geleentheid om hulle personeel bewus te maak van regte en is ook ’n lekker spanbou-aksie. Daar gaan ’n spesiale “Die Regte Plek”-korporatiewe uitdaging wees. In die uur van pret kan ondernemings ’n span inskryf van vier lede elk.

‘Almal wil trou­, begrafnisliedjie skryf’ LOUISA STEYL

Elke kunstenaar wil ’n liedjie skryf wat by troues en begrafnise gespeel word.

So sê die plaaslike kunstenaar, Dillon Lerm.

“Ek kan nie verstaan hoekom liewe Jesus dié een eerste vir my gegee het nie,” sê Dillon van sy liedjie, “Emma”.

Die liedjie trek al baie aandag reg oor die land, maar vir Dillon het die liedjie ’n baie persoonlike betekenis.

Die happy-go-lucky sanger raak skielik baie stil en ernstig as hy

oor die liedjie praat. Hy het dit geskryf vir ’n vriendin wat oorlede is.

“Almal het ’n Emma,” sê Dillon terwyl hy verduidelik hoe mense met die liedjie assosieer.

Hy vertel van sy boodskap vir die wat agtergelaat is: “Bring blomme vir my terwyl ek leef, moenie by ’n graf kom staan en huil nie.” Hy sê dis belangrik dat ons mense laat weet hoe ons voel voor dit te laat is.

Dillon het onlangs die musiekvideo vir “Emma” vrygestel en dit het alreeds meer as 2 900 “hits” op YouTube.

Having considered comments on the draft legislation, made by municipalities during previous workshops held in 2011, the Department has prepared a draft Bill for public comment and discussion at public workshops. The draft Land Use Planning Bill will be available on the departmental web page: www.westerncape.gov.za/eadp on 17 February 2012.

The ‘other’ SUPs get a chance to shine The absence of some heavyweights gave the junior stand up paddlers (SUP) a chance to shine during last week’s Primi Naish Downwind Dash.

The 31 SUPs and 27 surfskiers were greeted by a weak south-easterly wind and a moderate swell at the start of the ninth race in the current series.

Getting through the surf proved to be a big challenge with pretty much the entire first SUP starting batch getting wiped out by a marauding set of waves. Boards, paddles and bodies were scattered across the surfzone but eventually everyone got under way.

The 13-year-old Kimon Dos Santos got line honours after starting in the first bunch and finishing ninth overall.

In the second start it was 16year-old Dylan Frick who again seemed the man to beat. Halfway down the course the wind died completely and no more wave runs were offered. Pietro Muscas had passed Frick to take the lead only to see it taken right back once the wind died.

Francois Frick (Dylan’s dad) also made a come back in the no–wind conditions, as did Sebastien Cattelan who both passed Muscas.

Brad Adams had taken a very deep outside line and came in with great speed capitalising on smoother water and a wind switch to south-westerly to enter Small Bay just behind Frick. Frick beat him to the line for his second win in a row in 55min53s with Adams coming in 56min19s. Cattelan (57min27s) managed to catch and overtake Frick senior to take his first podium position of the series.

Dylan Frick is the overall leader in the Primi Downwind Dash series following his second win in a row last week.

Brigette van Aswegen completed her preparations for the SUP World Championship in Peru by once again beating more than half the field and coming in 13th in 1h05min50s with Tammy Robarts in a solid second position in 1h12min07s. Monika Wohlgemuth finished out the top three with a

time of 1h16min00s.

Dos Santos’s great time of 1h03min59s meant he beat Matthew van der Linden (1h04min38s) into third spot. There is a great competition among the juniors with Ethan Koopmans and Josh Robertson also putting in fine performances.

Series leader Ivan van Vuuren and Chris Bertish both missed Wednesday night’s race due to their Peru commitments. It will be difficult to regain their overall standings as they will also miss tonight’s race.

The series overall standings has become quite affected by the fact that some of the top-dogs, Chris and Greg Bertish together with Muscas have been forced to train for Peru Worlds on 12’6 boards and are now also missing a few races (Van Vuuren included).

HS B’ville bo in derby­stryd SAREL BURGER

Die HS Bellville se eerste krieketspan was Saterdag bobaas in sy jaarlikse derby-kragmeting teen D.F. Malan. Maar die groot verrassing van die naweek se o.19A-wedstryde was die oortuigende sege wat Monumentpark oor Fairbairn-kollege behaal het.

Reimerd Spreeth (4/11) het ’n vername aandeel gehad in Bellville se oorwinning met 45 lopies oor D.F. Malan wie se Kershoff Gouws (52*) nie die nodige ondersteuning van sy spanmaats gekry het nie.

In Monumentpark se skitterende agtpaaltjie-oorwinning oor Fairbairn het Marc Drury (56*) en Stephan van Eeden (4/22) die beste vertoon.

Die beste individuele vertoning van die dag was dié van Sammy Fransman (92) wat saam met Deno van Rensburg (69 en 5/32) die aanvoorwerk gedoen het vir die HS Tygerberg se sege met 108 lopies oor Fairmont.

Die wedstryde in die halfeindronde van die Sammy Bloch/DurbellApteke-uitklopkompetisie word Woensdag afgehandel, met Stellenberg wat besoek ontvang van D.F. Malan terwyl HS Tygerberg en HS Bellville mekaar die stryd aansê.

Om twee keer binne drie dae ’n driekuns te behaal, sit nie sommer in enige krieketspeler se broek nie.

Tog het Jason Philander, ’n snelbouler in HS Tygerberg se o.16Aspan, dit verlede week vermag. In ’n uitgestelde wedstryd Woensdag teen De Kuilen het Philander 4/15 ingeoes en het dit toe Saterdag opgevolg met ’n driekuns in die eerste boulbeurt van Brackenfell se kolfbeurt wat hom met 5/17 laat eindig het!

In die o.13A-liga het Boeta Chamberlain van die Skiereiland-krieketakademie in Bellville ’n droombeurt teen United-klub gespeel toe hy ’n onoorwonne 200 lopies vir sy span aangeteken het.

DRIEKAMP­WILSKRAG

Die Matie­atleet Nardus Matthysen van Welgemoed, het Sondag aan die Eleven Super Sprint­driekampbyeekoms in Bloubergstrand deelgeneem.

Matthysen was verlede jaar ’n lid van die SA duathlonspan wat in Spanje deelgeneem het, waar hy 11de gekom het in die afdeling 20­24 jaar. Hy is ook in die SA driekampspan opgeneem.
