SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENT: FOLLOWING IN MADIBA’S FOOTSTEPS

Local law student off to Leiden CARINA ROUX

U

niversity of the Western Cape (UWC) master’s law student Tarryn Abrahams (23) from Rouxville will be leaving for Leiden University in the Netherlands next month after being awarded the prestigious Nelson Mandela Scholarship. Leiden University founded the scholarship fund to commemorate the honorary doctorate extended to the late president in 1999. On receiving the award, Mandela stated: “South Africans will in the coming years have to solve problems that you have faced before us. We have to build many new houses and schools, extend health care still further, and deal with crime and corruption.” Mandela said a greater exchange of students would be enriching to both nations. “On the one hand, it will contribute to the development of our country and the rebirth of our continent. And on the other, we believe contact with the young people of my country will enrich and enlarge the insight that your youth has of your history and I dare say the multi-cultural character of your society.” Abrahams says Mandela was not afraid to push boundaries and encouraged everyone to pursue their dreams. “He lived in a difficult time but he persevered. I have been through my own challenges and now I have an opportunity to persevere and take a step into the unknown. But this step is about informing myself, educating myself as he

taught us to do,” she says. Abrahams knew exactly what she wanted to do after matriculating from De Kuilen High School in 2013. She was only eight years old when the movie Legally Blonde ignited the spark. ‘‘It might have been the way Elle Woods (Reese Witherspoon) used logic to win her first case, or the way she exceeded everyone’s expectations in law school, or perhaps the way she was never quite what everyone around her expected her to be – all I knew was, I was going to study law when I grew up.” Even though the movie glamorises things it struck a chord because the message was simple, and one she says she lives by: “You go for what you want, and you work hard for it.” After she graduated with her LLB in 2017 she took a gap year and worked as an au pair in the Netherlands. “I was often asked to perform tasks which were not part of the au pair agreement and to which I had to oblige. After months of unhappiness and constant disagreements with my host family, I was asked to immediately leave their home.’’ Her interest in human rights was piqued during her au pair stint in 2018. She decided to pursue a master’s degree after her return home. “Not all au pairs have a wonderful experience abroad and because they live in the same environment in which they are expected to undertake certain duties their role is a precarious one,” she says.
