A

resident from Jagtershof can currently be seen in the musical South Pacific at the Artscape Opera House.

Although Kaylene Hendricks (26) has a full-time job, on stage is where she wants to be.

Kaylene who works as a sport and event organiser at the Western Province Cricket Club is also a soprano singer who loves musicals.

She says her love for theatre started when she was cast as Maria in De Kuilen High School’s production of West Side Story. “The journey I went on back then made me want to pursue musical theatre as a career.”

Her mother convinced her to rather study something that will offer more job security.

“She was right because pursuing a career in the performing arts is extremely difficult for many people,” says Kaylene.

However, she still dreams of getting to a point where performing can be her main focus and career. “I just need the right platform to let go of my comfort zone and follow my dreams.’’

After she matriculated from De Kuilen in 2011 she went on to study sport management at the University of Western Cape (UWC).

She says she did not enjoy it at first as it wasn’t her passion.

She did an internship with the Stormers which she enjoyed, and once she started dealing more with people it grew on her, she says.

She has been doing singing gigs and parttime theatre productions all along.

Asked about any weird moments on stage, she says she once did a full scene with her dress zipped open at the back, “with bra exposed and everything, without realising it’’.

She admits it can be quite tiring to work fulltime and perform on stage, but luckily her boss is understanding.

Last year she played a bridesmaid called Ruth in the Gilbert and Sullivan comic opera, Ruddigore. Her dream role is that of Christine from Phantom of the Opera.

Her character in South Pacific, Liat, however, does not sing at all and speaks very little. ‘‘It forces me to use physical gestures to express my emotions – which I quite enjoy doing for a change.”

Need access to police info? Links is the ‘link’ CARINA ROUX

f you need access to information from Kuils River Police, your request will come through the office of senior administration clerk, Liza Links. Whether you need a statement or an accident report out of a docket, station deputy information officer, Links will see to it – if you are indeed allowed to have the information.

Although the Promotion to Access of Information Act (Paia) allows access to information held by the State, there are justifiable limitations such as ‘‘the reasonable protection of privacy, commercial confidentiality and effective, efficient and good governance” among others.

Links deals with enquiries from the public but also from attorneys. An amount of 60c per page is payable for any information.

Accident reports are often in demand.

“I check each and every one – is there an occurrence book number, is the correct information of the client filled in, is there a sketch or plan, is there a description …”

Attorneys will often try to ‘‘bamboozle her” and that’s why she needs to be familiar with the law. “You are not allowed to ask me any information on behalf of another (third) party. To do that you need a letter, power of attorney and a copy of that person’s ID,” she says.

She receives between 80 to 100 telephonic enquiries per month. Last week she had a client whose child was seriously injured in a hit-and-run incident. She says the child sustained brain injuries and no criminal case was initially opened. Links took the woman to the charge office and

Many who come to her door are not well informed, but Links says she does not let them go unless they are happy. “I feel a person will never come to a police station without a reason – that’s my passion – the community is my passion.”

She has even received thank you letters from overseas in instances where South Africans abroad needed assistance. “Send me a family member with the necessary documentation and I will liaise with them.”

Die konsep is losweg gegrond op die BBC TV-reeks Family Life Swap. Twee lede van een gesin moet plekke met twee van ’n ander gesin ruil vir vier dae.

Die vervaardigers wil sien hoe die gesinslede aanpas by die ander gesin se leefstyl en gewoontes, en wat hulle van mekaar kan leer.

Gesinne hoef nie ’n tradisionele eenheid te wees nie en paartjies hoef nie noodwendig getroud te wees nie. Enkelouers met kinders of enige groep mense wat hulself aanvaar as ’n gesinseenheid, kan inskryf.

Die eerste episode word verfilm oor vier dae vanaf Saterdag 17 tot Dinsdag 20 Augustus.

“If someone does not reply on the 512F within 28 days, I must send it to the police’s legal department. They will then make a decision.” Links says people can threaten her all they like, she works according to the law and regulations because a slip up could potentially cost the State a lot of money.

Attorneys are not allowed to speak to the detectives directly and need to come through her office.

“The detective must give me permission to take anything out of his docket,” says Links. “On form 512A he will give me instructions as to what I can and can’t take out. If the docket is still under investigation and the detective feels it can compromise the case, he can refuse information. If he refuses, I must leave it and answer the applicant accordingly to say they may request this information at a later date.”

In culpable homicide cases, insurance companies will request the post mortem report. They will not pay out any money if they do not have the report. They also need to pay to get this information (60c per page). The only time a person doesn’t pay is if it is your own statement in a docket.

Links says accident reports are collected every Tuesday from the Traffic Management Centre. “If the document is still in my possession when you apply for an accident report, you pay 60c per page, but as soon as it is signed off and goes to the Traffic Bureau, you pay R190,” says Links.

Clerk walks away with gold Endurance Walking Association of South Africa (EWASA) national championship at Fikile Mkhanyiswa, an administration Thohoyandou Correctional Services in clerk at Kuils River Police Station, brought Limpopo. The two-day enduro walk (Vasa gold medal home after competing in the byt) of 75km took place on Friday 12 and Saturday 13 July in the mountainous Vhembe district.

Mkhanyiswa was a member of the senior mixed team (three men and three women) from Western Province who completed the 75km total distance in a time of 9 hours and 23 minutes to secure first place and R5000 prize money.

On the first day, they walked 40km through difficult terrain.

Mkhanyiswa says it was quite challenging as there were many hills and the weather was hot and humid. The second day was easier and the team finished the 35km walk in 4 hours and 5 minutes.

Western Province came out tops winning five gold, two silver and 1 bronze medal overall.

The next Vasbyt events (club level) are Kannaland (Ladismith) on 28 and 29 August and Pollsmoor in November.

South Pacific runs from Tuesdays to Sundays and Kaylene plays Liat in every second performance. In alternative shows, she puts her singing voice to use as part of the choir. A highlight is performing while the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra is playing, she says.

The Rodgers and Hammerstein musical romance is set on a South Pacific island during WWII, where American sailors and nurses are stationed. According to Artscape’s website, “Nellie, a spunky nurse from Little Rock, Arkansas, falls in love with Emile de Becque, a French expatriate and plantation owner, and Lieutenant Joseph Cable finds himself in a passionate affair with Liat, the young daughter of Bloody Mary, the local grassskirt peddler. As the war against Japan escalates, reality sets in for both Nellie and Joseph, who struggle to reconcile their unconventional love affairs with their long-held prejudices and insecurities.”

Kaylene says Liat encourages a man to change his previous prejudices against mixed-race relationships and follow his heart instead. Kaylene has been in a mixed-race relationship once herself and says she can absolutely relate to the experience of prejudice. People should come to watch because South Pacific is a charming musical about how love and friendship should not discriminate against race or status, says Kaylene.

HewLin Compassion held successful camp for kids LISA LOTTERING @demi_lisa

T

he annual Compassion Convention where children could be children was a huge success.

About 65 children, 25 leaders and 50 volunteers or day visitors attended camp from Monday 15 to Thursday 19 July in Melkbosstrand. It was organised by HewLin Compassion, a non-governmental organisation (NGO).

Kraaifontein resident and founder of HewLin Compassion, Hewitt de Jager, says this year they were able to accommodate

more children from different areas including Bellville, Parow, Leonsdale, Elsies River, Kuils River, Athlone and Steenberg.

“Some of these children previously lived on the street while others dropped out of school and are living in extremely poor conditions,” says De Jager.

A combined effort from provincial government, NPOs, faith-based institutions, corporate industries, families, friends and individuals came together to make the camp possible for the children. They are also working towards alleviating the impoverished circumstances some are facing.

De Jager says the children enjoyed vari-

ous activities, which included arts and crafts. He says representatives from the department of health were also present at the camp and spoke to the children about health-related issues and personal hygiene.

“The children also learned about the issues in their communities and challenges they face, including gangsterism and drugs.”

According to De Jager, because the children might not have the best concentration span, the activities were structured in such a way that it had both theoretical and practical aspects. “The children were very

hands-on and received the activities well.”

De Jager says this year’s theme “Let children be children” was an extension of last year’s theme. However, this year, the leaders were more focused on the values of the organisation.

“Everything was structured around these values and the leaders also attended workshops.”

Vrouestemme belangrik in samelewing Internasionale Vrouedag word sedert die vroeë 1900’s wêreldwyd gevier – nie net om op die prestasies van vroue te fokus nie, maar ook om te veg vir die gelyke regte van vroue.

Alhoewel ons sedertdien groot vordering gemaak het, bly geslagsongelykheid wêreldwyd steeds ’n groot probleem. Dit is ’n globale neiging dat vroue, wat meer as die helfte van die bevolking uitmaak, steeds onderverteenwoordig is.

In Suid-Afrika word die maand Augustus as Nasionale Vrouemaand en 9 Augustus spesifiek as Vrouedag gevier.

Dan bring ons plaaslik hulde aan die ongeveer 20 000 vroue, wat in die 1956-optog na die Uniegebou in Pretoria opgeruk het om protes aan te teken teen die land se paswette.

Hierdie maand vier ons alle aspekte van vrouwees en wil ons hulde bring aan vroue, ongeag hul klas of ras – wat ongesiens dag na dag hul taak onvermoeid vervul.

Hierdie vroue is ons helde omdat hulle ’n verskil maak waar hulle hul ook mag bevind. Die enkelmammas wat baie keer meer as een werk het om die pot aan die kook te hou, onderwyseresse wat die ekstra myl vir ander se kinders stap, verpleegsters, polisievroue, gemeenskapsaktiviste wat sóveel vir hul gemeenskappe doen ... die lys is nimmereindigend.

Daar is duisende vroue wat gebuk gaan onder moeilike omstandighede, maar wat dag na dag hul taak met grasie vervul en suksesvol in eie reg is. Ons as vroue moet die balans handhaaf tussen persoonlike ontwikkeling, kinders grootmaak, die huwelik en dan nog boonop kompeteer met mans om die korporatiewe leer te klim.

Ons weet dat vroue ander uitdagings as mans het en dat daar juis daarom teen vroue gediskrimineer en hulle opsetlik uit die raadsaal gehou word. Desnieteenstaande het baie vroue op verskillende terreine hoogtes bereik. Vroue speel ’n belangrike rol ter ondersteuning van huishoudings, om inkomste te genereer en om te sien na die algemene welsyn van die gesin, en om haar regmatige plek in die samelewing in te neem.

Die samelewing vereis van ons om op ’n sekere manier op te tree, ’n sekere voorkoms te hê, korrekte en suiwer taal te besig en aan ’n sekere sosiale klas te behoort. Indien jy nie aan hierdie vereistes voldoen nie, is jy nie sosiaal aanvaarbaar vir sekere groepe nie. Dus, die armlastiges, die mindere onder ons, is die uitgeworpenes en word misken. Dis egter verblywend dat die stereotipering – dat vroue se plek in die kombuis is, en dat seuns slimmer as meisies is – stelselmatig afgebreek word.

Ons sien dat meer en meer vroue dinge doen wat hulle nooit voorheen toegelaat was nie en dat vroue daagliks bewys dat hulle tot enigiets in staat is. Ons is dit eens met Michelle Obama wat sê: “Women and girls can be whatever they want.

There is no limit to what we as women can accomplish.”

Ons as vroue is almal gelyk, ongeag ons velkleur of status; ons staar almal dieselfde uitdagings in die gesig. Dit is nie asof die wêreld ’n vreugdevolle, wonderlike plek vir ons is nie – ons moet nog steeds veg vir gelyke regte en teen geweld op verskillende vlakke. Dus, in plaas van jou te bekommer oor hoe jy oorkom, wees trots op jouself en wat jy tot dusver bereik het.

Safety should be contractors’ first priority I live in Pinehurst in Durbanville. On Thursday (25 July) I was driving past the corner of Wellington and Langeberg Road and was shocked when I saw a contractor and his workers cutting the branches of a eucalyptus tree.

They had no safety equipment and the vehicle they were using was most definitely not roadworthy.

It is a huge concern that the municipality gets these contractors – presumably untrained in safety – to do such dangerous work without the correct safety equipment.

Does the municipality check on these contractors?

Do these contractors have insurance in case of an accident.

What about the threat to people’s lives and property?

We know it is BEE appointments, but that is not the problem.

We want people to have work and do their work, but surely safety comes first and foremost.

Nou doen die komediant Mel Jones dit vir ’n lewe.

“Toe ek baie jonk was, het ek ’n fliek gaan kyk en toe ek uitstap, het ek só gelukkig gevoel. My siel was gelukkig. Ek kan nie eers meer die naam van die fliek onthou nie. Al wat ek onthou, is dat ek daardie dag geweet het dat ek dit wil doen as ek groot is – om mense gelukkig te maak,” sê sy.

Terwyl sy in die kleinhandelbedryf gewerk het, het haar ma haar vertel van komedie-slypskole wat in Woodstock aangebied word.

Mel was altyd van nature snaaks, maar het nooit gedink dat sy ’n loopbaan van dit sou kon maak nie.

“Ek het die slypskole bygewoon en die fasiliteerder het vir my gesê ek kan nie ‘net daar sit nie’. Die volgende klas het ek van my eie werk saamgevat en dit is baie goed ontvang. Die volgende week het hulle my naam op die lys gesit by ’n oopmikrofoonsessie. Ek was nog nooit vantevore ’n aanhanger van stand upkomedie nie, maar toe die gogga eers gebyt het, kon ek dit nie laat gaan nie,” sê sy.

Mel het in haar loopbaan van 10 jaar verskeie hoëprofiel-optredes gehad, insluitend by die Baxter-teater. Sy’t ook ’n paar toekennings ontvang vir haar werk. Danksy haar sukses as komediant het sy ook ’n suksesvolle radioloopbaan vir haarself uitgekerf.

“Toe ek die radiowese verlaat, het ek teruggegaan na my eerste liefde – komedie,” sê Mel.

Toe sy destyds begin optree het, was sy een van die min vroulike komediante in die land.

Volgens Mel het die feit dat sy meeste van die tyd die enigste vrou tussen ’n klomp mans was haar egter nie afgeskrik van ’n loopbaan in komedie nie.

Sy is trots is om ’n ambassadeur te wees vir vroulike komediante, omdat sy een van die eerstes was wat die bedryf betree het.

“Vroue dink nie aan komedie as ’n loopbaan nie en omdat daar nie baie vroue is wat dit doen nie, wil vroue dit nie probeer nie. Hoe meer vroue egter by komedie betrokke raak, hoe meer sal die weg gebaan word vir ander vroue,” sê sy.

“Mense dink komedie is maklik, maar dit is ’n wanopvatting. Die snaaksste ou rondom die braaivleisvuur beteken nie noodwendig hy gaan suksesvol wees op die verhoog nie.

“Jy moet klomp dinge op die verhoog probeer. Jy sal nooit weet of dit werk nie, tensy jy dit probeer. Dit is hárde werk en net met oefening sal jy beter raak. Dit vat lank om naam te maak.”

Mel is die gasvrou by TygerBurger se Fearlessly Female-vroue-oggend op Vrydag 9 Augustus. Sy beskou haarself as die “glittergom wat alles bymekaar hou” by so ’n geleentheid.

Years of gardening celebrated in Durbanville ESMÉ ERASMUS @erasmusesme

D

ecades of gardening was celebrated by Durbanville Garden Club and the Western Cape Rose Society on Saturday 27 July. In 1983, 50 years ago, the club was officially opened Tanya Visser, the celebrated TV gardener, came all the way from Durban to surprise the invited guests at the special tea party held at the Rochefort Village clubhouse. Visser is the editor of The Gardener and also television presenter of the Home channel’s popular show, The Gardener.

Visser entertained guests with a humorous discussion of the sevens sins of gardening.

Barbara Smith, chairperson of Durbanville Garden Club said: “After 50 years of gardening in Durbanville, the garden club and the Western Cape Rose Society are still enjoying 21st century support and both are closely connected to the Durbanville Rose Garden.”

“For many of these years, joint garden shows were held in the town hall. In recent years the garden club has held open garden weekends and container competitions,” she

said.

“The Durbanville rose garden has been visited by many thousands of rose lovers from around the world since its foundation in 1969 as a rose trial ground.

“It was officially opened in 1983 and the number of rose bushes rapidly grew to over 6 000,” Smith said.

Durbanville Garden Club continues to hold regular monthly meetings in the Durbanville Library with invited speakers.

Visits to a wide variety of garden-related venues are also arranged during the year.

“Gardens and gardening have changed dramatically over the years since 1969. However, each organisation continues to keep members up to date with the industry – encouraging the exchange of ideas and plants and helps new gardeners, young and old.

“Who knows what or how the next 50 years will affect our surroundings, but for now, congratulations to both clubs and long may they continue,” she said. . The next meeting of the club will be held on Wednesday 14 August from 19:30 at the Durbanville Library. A representative from Reliance Compost will talk about soil preparation.

“D

aar is genoeg geleenthede én ellende in die gemeenskappe waar ons bly, waarby ons betrokke kan raak,” het Dan Kriek, president van Agri SA Donderdag 25 Julie by die vergadering van die Durbanville-sakekamer aan sakelui gesê.

Kriek het ’n realistiese prentjie geskets oor grondonteiening enkele dae voordat die verslag oor grondhervorming sonder vergoeding van die presidensiële advieskomitee, waarvan Kriek ook lid is, uitgereik is.

Die verslag is Sondag 28 Julie deur Thoko Didiza, minister van landbou, uitgereik.

“Die tema van hierdie praatjie moes nie onteiening gewees het nie, maar volhoubare grondhervorming en hoekom ons eintlik okei gaan wees,” het hy gesê.

“Daar het baie dinge die afgelope 18 maande gebeur en Agri SA is negatief uitgebeeld op sosiale media, maar mense moet seker maak waar hierdie inligting vandaan kom.

Agri SA verteenwoordig nie net die Afrikaanssprekendes nie, maar die belange van baie mense in landbou – ook swart boere.

Daar is tans 100 000 opkomende boere wat deur Agri SA affiliasies bedien word,” het hy gesê.

“Landbou dra net tot 3% van die BBP by, maar tot 15% van ons land se ekonomie deur die landbouwaardeketting. Ons moet verantwoordelik hieroor ’n gesprek voer,” het hy gesê.

“Reeds met die ANC se beleidskonferensie in 2017 het ons verwag dat die gronddebat al hoe meer verpolitiseer gaan word. Daarom het Agri SA ’n grondoudit gaan doen om invloed te kan uitoefen by die debat.

“Daaruit het dit geblyk dat 27% van die land se grond reeds oorgedra is aan swart Suid-Afrikaners. Dit het ook geblyk dat die private sektor meer grond oordra as wat die regering doen. Daar gebeur dus wel transformasie en grondhervorming. Ons moet onderskei tussen die werklikheid en politieke aspirasies,” het hy gesê.

“Die meeste suksesse word behaal in die private sektor, terwyl nagenoeg 90% van die regering se pogings misluk het,” het hy gesê.

“Wat met die landbou gebeur, het ook ’n impak op ander sektore van die ekonomie.

Almal besef nie dis nie net die boere se probleem nie, maar almal se probleem. Ons sal saam ’n oplossing moet kry, “Ons weet almal van die parlementêre prosesse om die Grondwet te wysig wat aan die gang is. Ek dink president Ramaphosa is besig met ’n lang kantlynskop, maar dis nie goed vir die ekonomie nie; dit vat te lank.

“Ons boere is praktiese mense en toegewyd; ons verstaan wat gedoen moet word. ’n Mens kry onder die boere early adopters, maar dan ook die grootste gros wat graag iets wil doen, maar nie weet wat om te doen nie.

“Onsekerheid word op sosiale media geskep wat betref veiligheid (spesifiek teen plaasmoorde) en die droogte veroorsaak ook ekonomiese druk.

“Ramaphosa weet hy kan nie die ekonomie beskadig en voedselsekerheid bedreig nie,” het hy gesê.

Kriek en nog ’n lid van die advieskomitee, Nick Serfontein, het ook Sondag ’n aanvullende, minderheidsverslag uitgereik, waarin hulle nie die voorstelle steun om die Grondwet te wysig nie.

“Daar is geen regstegniese rede hoekom die Grondwet verander moet word nie. Daar is geen land in die wêreld waar onteiening sonder vergoeding plaasvind nie, behalwe in lande wat sektore van hul ekonomie genasionaliseer het. Die punt is, ons kan al die veranderinge wat nodig is, binne die huidige Grondwet doen.

“Ons gaan vinnige vordering sien met die onteieningswet. Dit was maklik om voor die

verkiesing te sê ons gaan die Grondwet verander, maar om dit te doen, is malligheid.

“Belegging sal nie die land inkom nie, want geen sakeman wil belê in ’n land waar onteiening sonder vergoeding geld nie.

Daar is ongelooflike internasionale druk om dit nie te doen nie.

“Daar gaan niks met produktiewe grond gebeur in die volgende 10 jaar nie. Daar is ook nie ’n tekort aan bereidwilligheid by boere nie. Boere besef hulle het ’n maatskaplike verantwoordelikheid teenoor hul werkers.

“Ek is positief oor die toekoms. Ons skraap die bodem, maar dit lyk beter. Ons regstelsel en vrye media is nie gekaap nie – ook nie ons burgerlike samelewing nie.

“Onteiening is ’n stofwolk – dis nie die antwoord op ons probleme nie. Dis beter om om ’n tafel te sit en planne te beraam om ons probleme op te los,” het hy gesê.

“Die grootste uitdaging is nie die vraag na plaasgrond nie, maar na grond in stedelike gebiede vir behuising. Daar is ’n stadige oorgang na ’n fokus op stedelike behuising en ontwikkeling. Ons móét vir mense eiendomsreg gee,” het hy gesê.

“Daar gaan niks met produktiewe grond gebeur in die volgende 10 jaar nie.”

New chef on the Hills Beautifully plated dishes and creative combinations is expected on the menu at Durbanville Hills after the recent appointment of Tamzyn Ehlers as its new head chef.

Tamzyn (29) will now take lead in continuing the restaurant’s impressive list of accolades over the past six years.

This include a certificate of excellence from TripAdvisor earlier this year; twice best restaurant in the winelands (Restaurant Week 2015 and 2016); best restaurant in South Africa (Restaurant Week 2017); top restaurant on TripAdvisor in 2018 and more recently nominated for top restaurant for the Haute Grandeur Global Restaurant Awards 2019.

Tamzyn studied pastry at Capsicum Culinary Studio in Cape Town and graduated in 2015.

She joined Jason’s Bakery for a six-month internship and worked her way up to junior pastry chef before learning the craft of novelty cakes as pastry chef at Aegean Café. Towards the end of 2016 she joined Durbanville Hills as a pastry chef and was promoted to sous chef, then assistant head chef before her latest promotion.

“I have always been a creative person whether be it my hair or tattoos.

“From a young age, I had an interest in cooking, baking and experimenting with new flavour combinations. I’ve never needed an excuse to cook or bake!

“Family gatherings usually involved me planning a three-course menu with baked snacks to set the scene, informal braais with friends would see tapas-style starters and a heavenly dessert. The bigger the guest list, the bigger the feast!

What she enjoys most about being a chef, is to see people gather around a meal which she has created. “It makes them happy and ultimately me too,” she said.

“Plating and food photography inspire me tremendously. A beautifully plated dish with different colours, textures and shapes, inspire me when creating a new menu.

“People definitely eat with their eyes first and I enjoy the creativity of combining colour, style and flavour.”

She says she wants to bring new experiences to the restaurant with unique food evenings, live music with tapas, a new menu designed around our new Collectors Reserve wine, and sundowners on the balcony with its spectacular views.

“I’d also like to create a storytelling menu with food photography that’s beautifully styled and truly capture the dishes we prepare with such intent in our kitchen,” she said.

Diving for a new record tributed to various NGOs for education about sustainable fishing, oceanic health and to combat poaching. These institutions include the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI), SASSI, Sea Shepherd and Ocean Warriors.

Campher is a systems administrator and received his open water diver certificate in 2009, advanced open water diver certificate in 2012 and rescue certificate in 2018. He is a big champion of diving in Cape Town and South Africa which, despite the cold water, has some of the most beautiful and unique dive spots available.

The 37-year-old will be attempting to blow the current record of 30 hours and 20 minutes out of the water with a 48hour uninterrupted dive. The attempt will take place at Long Beach, Simon’s Town. The date was selected because it’s when the water temperature is expected to be the most optimal. One of the main criteria for the record is that the water temperature must not exceed 15°C. Such a long duration underwater presents several challenges that include dehydration, oxygen consumption and flushing excess nitrogen. Prolonged exposure to cold water is another big concern. When this happens, one’s body’s energy is drained and your ability to think clearly is affected, which can lead to hypothermia. Human needs such as eating, drinking and sleeping underwater also need to be factored in.

It goes without saying that a lot of mental, emotional and logistical preparation is required when undertaking a task such as this.

Also known as One Mr Fish Breath, he has every intention of winning. He has close to 10 years diving experience, upwards of 100 dives under his belt, and has for three consecutive dive festivals won the contest for being the diver who spends the longest amount of time underwater.

“I was the first speaker and my first question was why the City of Cape Town has not consulted the tenants that have leases with the City 15 years ago, before the tender was sent out,” Abdul Davids, chairperson of Cycling Western Province, said.

Four representatives of the City attended to answer the questions and the facilitator was Freddie Prince, director of urban management.

“We have an existing lease with the City and so do the athletes and schools. We don’t understand why the process of consulting us first was not followed before the tender was given to Devmet. The agreement between the City and Devmet is not valid because the R15 million that Devmet had to pay into a trust before any development could be done, was not done,” Davids said.

The public still has the opportunity to log in on the public forum created for complaints, he said. “The City held a public participation process 10 years after it awarded the tender. Why is this? Why was this public participation process not held prior to granting the tender?” Davids asked.

Maureen Gallon, chairman of the Edgemead Facility Management Committee, said she was astounded.

“Why was no public meeting held first before the City decided to give the tender to Devmet. Now the City tells us the facility is under-utilised, but they allowed the facility to

go downhill,” she said vehemently.

Currently you can only book the facility from month-to-month basis and this is not feasible.

“In the past, we held international and national events at the Velodrome and a monthto-month basis is not going to work. Athletes, cyclists and other users of the facility have to prepare in advance for events especially if we have overseas athletes participating.

This is a public asset for all sporting codes.

The City needs to take it back from the developer as they (Devmark) are in breach of their contract for not transferring the money to an attorney to be put in a trust. As the public participation process was not done 10 years ago, due process has not been followed and this negates the agreement. The codes wish to take back this public facility and return it to the sporting fraternity,” Gallon said.

She also mentioned that when the City and Devmet signed the agreement in 2009 the developer had 60 days to pay the R15 million, and if it was not done, it was a breach of contract. “No extension will be given as per the terms. Pockets of the parking area cannot be tendered away as this too raises the question of the parking bays currently part of the Velodrome.

“All in all the City cannot hold a public participation process after they have already negotiated with a developer without consulting the general public. Too much like putting the cart before the horse and expecting us to be dazzled by screenshots of proposed refurbishments by a developer. The proposals conflict with the existing malls at Tygervalley and Willowbridge,” Gallon said.

GrandWest chefs feed the hungry T

he GrandWest Chefs that Care goes out into the community every month to provide hungry children and adults with a delicious, healthy meal.

GrandWest’s food and beverage team started Chefs that Care in an attempt to use their skills and passion to positively impact the lives of those less fortunate in surrounding communities.

Genevieve Smith, sustainability manager at GrandWest, says, “Unemployment is rife in many Cape communities. Many families are really suffering, especially with the cost of food skyrocketing. The reality is that lots of people do not even have one balanced meal a day. Sadly the most affected are usually children and the elderly whose quality of life and health are severely compromised when their nutritional needs are not met.

“The GrandWest chefs can make a difference to people in need thanks to their knowledge of food preparation and nutrition.

With the support of GrandWest and concerned sponsors, we have been in a position to prepare and share over 3 500 meals every year,” says Smith.

GrandWest’s executive chef Wynand Schoeman, says, “The look of gratitude on the faces of the children and adults is all the inspiration we need. Alleviating hunger is something that will always be close to our hearts and we feel privileged to be able to continue with this programme to feed the hungry in our communities every month.

“We’d like to say a big thank you to all of our volunteers who make it happen and a special word of appreciation to our sponsors.

On 13 June, Chefs that Care went to Robin Hood Daycare Centre in Elsies River, serving Chicken à la King pasta, and jelly and custard dessert to 100 children and 50 adults.

The team went to Valhalla Park Football Club on 15 June, where 600 children and 50 adults received mince pasta bolognese and mousse for dessert.

“We are very proud of our Chefs that Care team,” says Smith. “These dedicated chefs and staff go out monthly to provide tasty meals to the community. It is wonderful to serve the community at such a grassroots level,” she says.

During this year’s #16DaysforYouth, an initiative created by Heart FM to help youth from the Western Cape and GrandWest supported local projects that aid local children. The projects GrandWest supported included donating sport kits to the Ysterplaat Primary School in Brooklyn, dance shoes to the Angelos After School Dance programme in Ysterplaat, donating boxes of non-perishable foods, educational toys and Grade R tables and chairs to the Ethembeni Educare in Khayelitsha and donating non-perishable foods, educational toys and a much-needed industrial gas stove and a double door fridge to Robin Hood Educare in Riverton, Elsies River. “We are so proud to be able to get involved in Heart FM’s #16DaysforYouth initiative,” says Genevieve Smith, sustainability manager at GrandWest. “We all know that our youth are our future and are delighted to help organisations like these that nurture and care for the children in our communities.”

Axe has been a vocalist, guitarist and songwriter since February 2016 and has his own rock band called Axenmore.

They have been influenced by bands such as Led Zeppelin, Bon Jovi, The Darkness, ACDC, Black Sabbath and Guns and Roses, but also play ‘‘softer songs’’.

Axenmore plays at various functions and events such as parties, festivals, pub gigs, biker rally’s and weddings. Current members include Tauna Collier (vocals), Rob Stemmet (bass guitar) and Sebastian Guile (drums).

More homes needed for ‘singles’

T

he new General Household Survey (GHS) report, just released by StatsSA, has huge implications for the residential property sector, according to Rudi Botha, chief executive officer of BetterBond.

“The survey found that about half of all South Africans over the age of 18 are single, either because they have never been married or because they are now divorced or widowed. That percentage rockets among 18 to 34-year-olds, with 95% of men in this age group and 86% of women have never been married and not currently living with a partner either.”

As a result the rate of new household formation in SA – which usually happens as people move out of their childhood homes and set up on their own – is growing at 2,4% per year.

“This means we are probably not only going to need a lot more homes to be built, but a lot more homes suited to young singles, single parents and single seniors.

“The number of households in SA has grown from 12,8m to 16,7m over the past 10 years – and less than 40% of these now consist of families with four or more members.

Almost 26% (or more than 4m) contain just one person, while a total of 62% are composed of three people or less.”

Although the number of households living

in formal homes has risen by 5,5 million since 2002 to a total of 13,5 million currently, there has also been an increase in the number of those living in informal homes, from 1,5 million to almost 2,2 million (13,1%) – with the remainder living in traditional or other homes.

“In other words, the provision of new formal homes has also not kept pace with the growth in the number of households – and there are vast opportunities and possibilities inherent in this fact for developers, builders, banks, investors, estate agents, originators like ourselves and many others involved in or associated with the residential property sector.”

He says the potential for job creation and empowering people over time to become homeowners is also massive. “It has also shown the benefits of homeownership in terms of social cohesion and private wealth creation, but right now even the creation of more formal rental accommodation that is affordable would be a significant advance for almost one million households that currently rent informal homes.

“We hope to see the vigorous implementation of government’s plans to rapidly identify and allocate underutilised public land close to the metros for new affordable housing projects,” he concluded.

ome children love a jungle gym, but seven-year-old Kyron van der Bergh loves the MMA octagon.

The Durbanville Preparatory School learner’s trophy cabinet boasts 16 medals and two trophies all won in less than a year.

The SAGA (South Africa Grappling Association) Cape Classic recently held at the Sunningdale Sports Complex saw Kyron taking silver in kumite (fighting) and gold in kata (demonstration of fighting).

“He currently does karate with Shotokan in Brackenfell, Jiu-Jitsu with CJA Jiu Jitsu and Kickboxing with Monkon Muay Thai in Durbanville. He dreams of being an internationally recognised fighter. His natural talent does not make him lazy, if you are looking for Kyron he is either out running, in the garage hitting the pads or in the study practising his moves and in downtime, he watches Bruce Lee and the Karate Kid,” said Kyron’s father, Kevin van der Bergh.

The love for MMA runs through the veins of the family as Kevin himself is a former Western Province all styles champions and represented South Africa on the international stage.

The love and passion Kyron have for the sport is tangible. “When he performs or trains you just hear parents speak among themselves, ‘look at that boy, wow who is that, it is amazing’. It is great and rewarding to hear as a parent but we never stop reminding him to thank God for his talent, to respect his trainers and always work hard. Talent is one thing, but determination is what gets you all the way.

Kyron is known around the tournaments as that kid who is wearing a hoodie that says ‘I don’t need a weapon, I am one’, and his flat cap saying ‘the champ is here’! I had this made for him as I firmly believe in sharing Kyron’s dream with him. It’s not arrogance, its motivation, pride, and hey, it was boxing legend Mohammed Ali saying this and it worked for him,” said Kevin.

Kyron is as the saying goes not a one-trick pony and is also part of the school choir or on the athletics track.

JP and Ameilia Muller from Brackenfell Shotokan, Matthew Marais and Carlo Schippers Monkon Muay Thai in Durbanville and Alex and Mike Herbig (Durbanville) is the one responsible for molding Kyron into a champion.

Kyron van der Bergh is a “little” champion on the local MMA scene.

Avron Kloppers from Eerste River, the third best pool player in the world.

Pool is not one of the recognised sports in the country, but Avron Kloppers (20) from Eerste River is South Africa’s champion in the u.23 age group He also came third at the 8-ball Pool Championships in the United Kingdom (UK) where he competed against 11 countries. He is part of the Dream Team that consists of the top three players in the world. Avron became the SA champ when he competed in the national competition in 2018 at Kleinplasie in Worcester.

He started playing pool when he was nine and received his first national colours in 2011 from the Ikapa Pool Federation.

To compete in the UK he had to fork out nearly R25 000 and with the help of his parents, family and neighbours, they were able to send him overseas.

He also received R8 500 from the SA Pool Association to help cover his costs for the UK.

Unie-Milnerton en Brackenfell sukkel SAREL BURGER Die nederlae van die rugbyspanne van die klubs Unie-Milnerton en Brackenfell in die jongste reeks Superligawedstryde maak hul posisie wankelrig om later hierdie seisoen vir die Presidentbeker-kompetisie te kwalifiseer.

Van die ses voorste spanne op die punteleer wat vir die Presidentbeker-kompetisie kwalifiseer, is die Maties, Ikeys, Valsbaai en Durbanville-Bellville feitlik verseker van hul deelname. Dit beteken dat Unie-Milnerton, Brackenfell en die Universiteit van Wes-Kaapland (UWK) dit sal moet uitspook om die vyfde en sesde plekke.

Ná die jongste reeks wedstryde lyk die puntestand in die topafdeling nou só: Valsbaai eerste (50 punte, 11 wedstryde), gevolg deur Durbell (46 in 11 wedstryde), die Ikeys (45 in 10 wedstryde), Unimil (39 in 12 wedstryde), Brackenfell (34 in 10 wedstryde) en

UWK (33 in 8 wedstryde).

Die onoorwonne Maties, wat sover nog net ses wedstryde gespeel het, sal hom waarskynlik binne die volgende paar weke ook in die voorste gestoeltes begeef. Tygerberg-klub kan ook nog nie afgeskryf word nie. UWK maak al meer stem dik en die afgelope naweek is Primrose met 85-22 kafgeloop terwyl Tygerberg met 25-19 met Schotsche Kloof/Walmer klaargespeel het. Unimil (16-29 t Valsbaai) en Brackenfell (25-27 t die Ikeys) kon egter nie die pyp rook nie.

Kuilsrivier (53-36 t Vineyards) en Bellville (26-20 t Helderberg) word al meer ’n bedreiging vir Franschhoek aan die bopunt van die punteleer in afdeling B. Franschhoek (49 punte, 12 wedstryde) is nou net ’n kortkop voor Bellville (47 in 11 wedstryde) en Kuilsrivier (46 in 10 wedstryde).

In ander wedstryde die afgelope naweek het Belhar 47-35 teen All Saints gewen, maar Goodwood het 32-48 teen Hamlets vasgeval.

Speel in óns gholfdag STEHAN SCHOEMAN TygerBurger hou op Vrydag 27 September ’n gholfdag ten bate van Huis Jabes, ’n veilige hawe vir vrouens en kinders van gesinsgeweld.

Spelers sal by die Kuilsrivier-gholfklub sake uitspook en groot pryse is op die spel. Die formaat is ’n vierbal-samespel met twee tellings wat tel.

Pro Fans sal sorg vir gesogte sportmemorabilia, wat tydens die prysuitdelingsdinee opgeveil sal word. Die opbrengs sal aan Huis Jabes geskenk word. ’n Paar sportsterre sal

ook deel wees van die dag se verrigtinge en besonderhede hieroor sal later bekend gemaak word. Die sportvasvrakompetisie behoort ook groot aftrek te vind.

Daar is reeds ’n aantal vierballe verkoop en spasie is beperk. Die koste is R2 500 per vierbal, wat middag- en aandete insluit.

Maatskappye word aangemoedig om deel te word van die dag en kan putjies koop om hul produkte te vertoon.

Die eerste vierbal slaan om 11:30 af.
