WALKWAYS CONSTRUCTED: PEDESTRIANS TAKEN ‘OFF THE STREETS’

T
he construction of pavements alongside Pionier Street in Soneike in Kuils River will make the walk for pedestrians to and from the Soneike Mall an easier and safer one. Pedestrians will no longer have to walk in the street, but can now safely make their way along the newly constructed walkways.
Many of the employees at the mall and in the area walk along Pionier Street to get to and from Van Riebeeck Road, from where they access public transport. “That was the reason for the project. Many people who work in the area including employees at the mall is reliant on public transport and thus forced to walk this route every day,” says Councillor Suzette Little, Mayoral Committee member for Area North. Construction on the footpaths, which
are about a metre in width, started earlier this year and it is projected that the project will be completed within the coming month. “The project is due to be finished by mid-September 2017, weather permitting, to allow for the premix to be done,” says Little. Despite the construction of the walkways having resulted in an area being cleared in front of the homes of residents living on Pionier Street, Little confirms that there have been no negative responses or complaints
from property owners. “The pedestrians are pleased with the footways because they can now safely walk off the road and we have not had any negative response from the adjacent property owners,” says Little. According to the councillor the construction of the walkways is costing the City R380 000 excluding VAT. VWhat is your opinion on this article? Let us know at briewe@tygerburger.co.za.
